Hyderabad: BRS student wing BRSV laid siege to the DGP’s office in Hyderabad on Sunday, demanding the immediate arrest of Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay’s son Bhagirath in connection with a POCSO case involving a minor girl. Several leaders, including BRSV State president Gellu Srinivas and vice president Thunga Balu and others were arrested during the flash protest.
The demonstration turned tense as activists raised slogans demanding Sanjay’s dismissal from the Union Cabinet and raised slogans against Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy for delaying action against the accused. They held the state government equally responsible for the delay in action. Police detained several BRSV leaders.
Speaking on the occasion, Gellu Srinivas questioned the double standards in law enforcement. “Is there one standard of justice for common people and another for a Minister’s son?” he asked. He alleged that the minor victim and her parents have been fighting for justice for last three months. Instead of protecting her, he said counter-cases were filed against her and was being treated like a criminal rather than a victim.
He accused both the BJP and Congress of attempting to shield the accused. He also questioned the silence of BJP leaders on the issue despite the party’s “Beti Bachao” campaign and demanded immediate action against the accused.
Separately, women activists also staged a protest at Pet Basheerabad Police Station on the same day, coinciding with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Telangana. They demanded Bhagirath’s immediate arrest under POCSO Act and also Bandi Sanjay’s removal from the Union Cabinet to prevent him from influencing the case.
