Heatwave intensifies in Telangana; thunderstorms likely by evening

Telangana is reeling under an intense heatwave, with temperatures crossing 44°C in several districts. While heatwave conditions are set to persist through the day, the IMD has forecast thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds across multiple regions by evening.

Hyderabad: The intense heatwave that has gripped all parts of Telangana has reached a critical level with almost all the districts consistently recording maximum day time temperatures between 41 degree Celsius and 45 degree Celsius in the past 24-hours.

While Wednesday promises thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds, the daytime maximum temperatures, however, across all parts of Telangana, will continue to hover between 41 degree Celsius and 44 degree Celsius and even above 44 degree Celsius in certain districts, according to India Meteorological Department (IMD), Hyderabad.


In the last 24-hours, between Tuesday and Wednesday, according to IMD, Hyderabad temperature data, Nizamabad emerged as the hottest district, recording a scorching 44.4 degree Celsius, followed by Adialabad at 44.3 and Medak district at 43 degree Celsius.

The State’s capital is also too far away, as maximum day time temperature in the last 24-hours at Begumpet was the highest at 42 degree Celsius, which is a departure of 2.6 degree Celsius from the normal. Some of the other regions in Hyderabad where maximum temperatures were recorded in the last 24-hours include Hakimpet (41.7), Hayathnagar (41), Rajendranagar (40.5) and Patancheru (40.4 degree Celsius).

The Hyderabad weather department has indicated that by Wednesday evening, there are chances of thundershowers, lightning and gusty winds across multiple districts including Nizamabad, Jagtial, Rajanna Sircilla, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, Rangareddy, Hyderabad, Medchal-Malkajgiri, Vikarabad, Sangareddy, Medak, Kamareddy, Mahabubnagar, Nagarkurnool, Wanaparthy, Narayanpet and Jogulamba Gadwal.

Heatwaves, however, will continue throughout the day on Wednesday and thunderstorms are likely to develop in the latter half of the day or by night, IMD, Hyderabad added.
