Hyderabad: A tragic incident unfolded at Osmania University where a 19-year-old engineering student died after attempting suicide by self-immolation, reportedly due to emotional distress linked to a failed relationship.
The student, identified as Vinesh, a mining engineering student, poured petrol on himself and set himself ablaze near the Renuka Yellamma temple on the campus on Monday, triggering panic among students and staff.
Locals who noticed the incident immediately alerted the OU police. He was rushed to Gandhi Hospital, where doctors confirmed that he had sustained over 70 per cent burn injuries, including severe burns to his face.
Despite intensive treatment in the emergency ward, Vinesh succumbed to his injuries around midnight.
Police recovered a purported suicide note from the student, which has sparked concern on campus.
Preliminary findings suggest that he was deeply distressed over a failed love affair. In the note, he allegedly mentioned that the girl he loved had betrayed him and was in a relationship with someone else. He also reportedly apologised to his parents and others before taking the extreme step.
Vinesh hailed from Govindapur in Mahabubabad district.
The OU police have registered a case and launched an investigation to ascertain further details surrounding the incident.
