Hyderabad: Osmania University conducted the third phase of deep cleaning in the lake bed in Landscape Garden on the university campus, removing 300 kg plastic waste.

In this phase, a focused and intensive cleanup operation was undertaken to extract plastic waste that had settled on the lakebed and its immediate surroundings. A total of 300 kg of plastic trash, comprising single-use plastic bags, PET bottles, multilayered packaging, and other synthetic debris, was manually segregated and removed from the lakebed.

The collected waste would be handed over to GHMC for proper disposal, ensuring recycling and co-processing. The cleaning drive achieved 100 percent coverage of the lakebed and approximately 80 percent of the general vicinity surrounding the wetland.

The remaining peripheral areas are expected to be addressed in subsequent phases.

“Recognizing the need for sustained intervention to maintain the cleanliness and ecological health of the wetland, we will take up another round of cleaning activity in the near future,” said Prof. C Srinivasulu, Director, Gardens, Green Belt and Sanitation.

The wetland and Landscape Garden are frequented by members of the common public, including walkers, joggers, and families using the University campus for recreation. People visiting the campus have been urged not to litter or throw garbage anywhere in the campus, specifically in the lake bed or its vicinity.

“Protecting our campus from plastic and litter is non-negotiable. The recent lake cleaning activities undertaken by our staff has enabled the university to showcase the importance of clean campus,” said Prof. Kumar Molugaram, VC OU.
