Hyderabad: The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) is preparing for a massive show of strength in Jagtial on April 20, with party chief K Chandrashekhar Rao set to address a public meeting after a considerable gap. The meeting will also mark the formal entry of senior leader T Jeevan Reddy into the party.
The meeting, which is reportedly titled Janahitha, is being planned on a grand scale at a 20-acre site near Mothe Road. Party leaders are treating it as a prestige event aimed at reviving cadre morale after a setback in the Assembly elections and reasserting the party’s presence in Telangana politics. Extensive arrangements are underway, with local units mobilising supporters from across the undivided Karimnagar district.
BRS working president KT Rama Rao is personally monitoring preparations. Targeting a crowd of around one lakh, the party cadre are busy making arrangements to draw 5,000-10,000 people from each constituency in the erstwhile districts of Karimnagar and Nizamabad.
Some senior leaders have been appointed as in-charges to crucial constituencies for coordination, while others were assigned specific responsibilities for crowd mobilisation, logistics and on-ground coordination. They are organising constituency and mandal level meetings as part of preparations for the public meeting.
Jagtial town has already turned pink, with party flags, banners and hoardings dominating key junctions. Teams are touring villages to bring in party workers, youth and farmers in large numbers. Police are also preparing for a heavy security deployment in view of the expected crowd. Party sources said they have submitted a formal application for permission.
While permissions for the meeting are underway, the party leaders accused the ruling Congress of trying to create hurdles for the meeting. They alleged that the road leading into Jagtial from Korutla has been dug up just before the public meeting, to restrict movement. They also accused the government of not confirming RTC buses sought for the meeting.
The choice of Jagtial is strategic. Jagtial and neighbouring constituencies of erstwhile Karimnagar and Nizamabad districts have been a stronghold for the BRS. They are being leveraged to build fresh momentum, as the party is looking to build fresh momentum from North Telangana. The induction of Jeevan Reddy, a seasoned leader with over four decades of political experience, is expected to add weight to the party’s revival efforts.
The meeting is also significant as it marks Chandrashekhar Rao’s return to a large public platform after a long gap. He did not address a public meeting since the silver jubilee celebrations of the party last year. His speech is expected to set the tone for the party’s future political strategy and sharpen its attack on the ruling Congress.
