1 Dead As Brazil Bridge Collapses, Truck Carrying Acid Falls Into River

A bridge connecting two states in Brazil’s northern and northeastern regions collapsed on Sunday as vehicles were crossing, killing at least one person and spilling sulfuric acid into the Tocantins River.

The National Department of Transport Infrastructure said the central span of the 533-meter (0.3-mile) bridge, linking the cities of Estreito in Maranhao state and Aguiarnopolis in Tocantins state, gave way in the afternoon. A tanker truck carrying the acid plunged into the water, officials said.

According to the fire department, one person has been confirmed dead and another was rescued alive.

Aguiarnopolis city councilman Elias Junior was recording a video asking authorities to fix problems with the bridge, which he said could no longer handle the heavy trucks passing over it. As he pointed to a large crack on the shoulder of the bridge, the structure collapsed in front of him, causing him to run back. Reuters could not immediately independently verify the video. Junior did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Preliminary estimates indicate at least 11 people were involved in the accident with two trucks, a car, and a motorcycle falling into the river, which is more than 50 meters (164 feet) deep.

By early evening, rescue divers halted their efforts after identifying that one submerged tanker was leaking sulfuric acid, said the fire department from Tocantins.

The Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira Bridge, inaugurated in 1960, was built with reinforced concrete and is part of the BR-226 highway, connecting the federal capital Brasilia to Belem, a northern city set to host the United Nations Climate Change Conference next year.

Thousands in Havana protest US hostility toward Cuba

Around 700,000 people marched outside the US Embassy in Havana on Friday, demanding an end to Washington’s decades-long blockade of Cuba and calling for the removal of the island from the US State Department’s list of state sponsors of terrorism.

Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel led the march, joined by former president Raul Castro. Diaz-Canel condemned the United States for maintaining the terrorist label on Cuba, calling it both “false and immoral.” He also accused the United States of training paramilitary groups to target Cuba’s infrastructure and slashed the Biden administration for continuing harsh economic measures from the Trump era.

Diaz-Canel also denounced the United States for intensifying the blockade, calling it “ruthless.”

Cubans hold no hostility toward the American people, he said, vowing to stand firm against any attempts to undermine its sovereignty or socialist system.

“If the United States persists in its efforts to break our resolve, they will only find rebellion and unwavering determination,” he said.

The crowd, waving Cuban flags and chanting “Down with the blockade,” was a diverse mix of supporters. Among them was Yanquiel Cardoso, wearing a shirt reading “Cuba sponsors peace, love, and unity,” marching with his son, who wore a shirt wishing to “grow up without a blockade.” Cardoso decried the “cruel and inhumane” blockade, which he said hinders Cuba’s development.

Many healthcare workers joined the protest, including Colombian medical student Silvia Juliana Casadiego, who praised Cuba’s global solidarity and condemned U.S. sanctions.

“Despite its limitations, Cuba always extends a helping hand — not just to Colombia, but all of Latin America,” she said.

Cuban medical student Kevin Perez highlighted the toll US have taken on Cuba’s healthcare system. “Healthcare has been one of the most affected sectors, but we will always stand to defend our homeland.”

This march was the first major protest in years outside the US diplomatic mission to denounce the blockade.

Ratan Tata envisioned a “New India” led by young entrepreneurs, praised T-Hub nine years ago-Telangana Today

Speaking at T-Hub, India’s largest incubation center, Tata reflected on his upbringing in an environment where ideas were often dismissed. He noted that bosses and managers would typically respond politely, insisting that individuals needed to gain experience on the shop floor before sharing their ideas.

Ratan Tata envisioned a “New India” led by young entrepreneurs, praised T-Hub nine years ago

Hyderabad: Despite coming from a traditional business family, Ratan Tata had always been forward-thinking, a quality evident from his speech at the inauguration of T-Hub nine years ago in which he emphasised the importance of encouraging young minds with brilliant ideas, stating that they represent the new face of India.

Addressing the gathering at the T-Hub, India’s largest incubation centre, Tata had said he grew up in an environment where if one had an idea, the boss or the manager would not be willing to listen to that and politely would say that one has to gain experience on a floor shop before coming up with ideas.

“I grew up in an environment where if you had an idea, your boss or your manager politely told you, sometimes not so politely, that you need to gain some experience before you open your mouth.

You need to roll up your sleeves and spend five years on the shop floor. Then you can talk. That’s not what enterprises are today. Enterprises today are an ability of someone who may be in his 20s who has a good idea and he needs to find a way to implement it,” he had said.

According to him, the country had an environment of venture capitalists who would listen to the person and facilities like T-Hub which would enable that person to try out his ideas to turn it into reality.

He further said his enthusiasm in the “new India of tomorrow” continues to be there and continues to feel the need to support enterprising, young Indian engineers, and scientists and wanted wanted everyone to recoginse the need to support it for He described the T-hub as the nucleus of what could be a new big thing in the country.

BRS leader and former minister KT Rama Rao recalling Tata’s presence during the inauguration of T-Hub said the departed business tycoon lives in everyone’s heart and that he will be a source of inspiration for everyone who wishes to make this world a better place.

“Every time we look at THub, we will remember you sir,” Rama Rao said in a post on X.

BGT: Gavaskar compares Ashwin’s mid-series retirement to Dhoni’s 2014-15 call

“He could have said, listen after the end of the series, I won’t be available for selection for India. What it does is that, similarly when MS Dhoni retired at the end of the 3rd Test in 2014-15 series, it leaves you one short,” Gavaskar told broadcasters

BGT: Gavaskar compares Ashwin’s mid-series retirement to Dhoni’s 2014-15 call

Sunil Gavaskar

Brisbane: Former Indian captain and legendary opener Sunil Gavaskar reacted to Ravichandran Ashwin’s retirement decision’s impact on the team and said the all-rounder did the same as MS Dhoni did during the 2014-15 Asutralia series.

Ashwin announced his retirement from international cricket immediately following the drawn Gabba Test in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Gavaskar drew parallels to MS Dhoni’s mid-series retirement during the 2014-15 Test series in Australia, arguing that such decisions disrupt team planning.

“He could have said, listen after the end of the series, I won’t be available for selection for India. What it does is that, similarly when MS Dhoni retired at the end of the 3rd Test in 2014-15 series, it leaves you one short,” Gavaskar told broadcasters.

“The selection committee has picked so many players for a tour with a purpose. If there are any injuries they can select from the reserve players to have in the team. So, Sydney is somewhere where there is a lot of support on offer for spinners. So India could have played with two spinners. You never know. He could have been there for sure. I don’t know how the pitch in Melbourne will be like. Normally, you tend to look at the end of the series. That’s it. In the middle, it is not usual,” he added.

When asked if Washington Sundar was being groomed to replace Ashwin, Gavaskar admitted it seemed likely. “Maybe Washington Sundar is ahead of him. Rohit mentioned that Sundar is flying out tomorrow. So, this marks the end of Ashwin as an international cricketer. He has been one heck of a cricketer,” Gavaskar said.

Menwahile, Sundar posted a heartfelt post for state-mate Ashwin on Instagram, following the allrounder’s retirement. “More than just a teammate – Ash anna, you have been an inspiration, a mentor and a true champion of the game. It’s been an honour to share the field and the dressing room with you.”

“Coming from the same state of TN, I have grown up watching you from the close corners of Chepauk to playing against you and alongside you. Every moment has been a privilege. The learnings, both on and off the field are something I will carry with me forever. Wishing you success and happiness in whatever comes next,” the post read.

Ashwin’s retirement comes at a crucial juncture in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, with the series delicately poised 1-1 with the drawn Gabba Test. His absence leaves a gap in India’s bowling arsenal, especially as they prepare for the upcoming Test in Melbourne and Sydney, traditionally a spinner-friendly venue.

India Must Shield Constitutional Bodies From Political Influence: Supreme Court Judge

Justice Venkataramiah served as the 19th Chief Justice of India. (Representational)

Bengaluru:

India must protect the integrity of its constitutional institutions from outside interference, including those that are politically motivated, said Justice PS Narasimha, Judge, Supreme Court of India, on Sunday.

Justice Narasimha was delivering the Justice ES Ventakaramiah Centennial Memorial Lecture, organised by the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) in Bengaluru.

Justice Venkataramiah served as the 19th Chief Justice of India. He previously served as a judge of the Karnataka High Court, as well as the Advocate General of Mysore. According to the Supreme Court Observer, he was a part of benches that pronounced 720 judgments. Of these, he authored 256 judgments during his term at the Supreme Court.

In his lecture, Justice Narasimha said integrity of the institutions can be maintained only by putting in place safeguards in the appointment, decision making and removal process of individuals who helm these institutions.

He also added that the topic of the memorial lecture, ‘Reimagining Constitutional Institutions: Integrity, Efficiency, and Accountability’ is relevant, as Justice Venkataramiah belonged to that generation of judicial statesmen who played an active role in developing and sustaining institutions.

Justice Narasimha dwelled in detail about the role of ‘Fourth Branch Institutions’ like the Election Commission, the Comptroller and Auditor General of India, Union and State Public Service Commissions, and the National Commissions for SCs, STs, and OBCs.

Giving the example of the Election Commission, for instance, the justice said, “Today, we take it for granted that there is a separate body outside the executive to hold elections for Parliament and state legislatures.

However, it is important to recognise that before its institutionalisation, it was possible for elections to be conducted through the executive branch,” said the judge.

He lauded the vision of India’s constitution-makers who chose to institutionalise the superintendence, direction and control of elections through a body outside the Executive.

“I am amazed by the foresight of our constitution makers to provision sub-article (2) to Article 324 to enable appointment of such number of Election Commissioners, over and above the Chief Election Commissioner, to constitute the Commission,” said Justice Narasimha.

He went on to add that the non-constitutional fourth branch institutions like the Central Vigilance Commission and the Central Information Commission, can also be categorised under ‘integrity institutions’, which should be insulated from political influence.

He also said our Constitution is not a mere legal document, but an instrument of social change. He said it has clearly demarcated constitutional spaces for the traditional three branches the executive, the legislature, and the judiciary.

“There is the occasional trespass, if I may use that term; there is a contestation as to the custody of Constitutional spaces, but that only underlines that there is a system of checks and balances,” he added.

According to him, these checks and balances are put in place by the ‘Fourth Branch institutions’. “We need other institutions or procedures which can make the traditional branches accountable, accessible and open to the citizenry.” We need institutions that can withstand political tribulations, hold power wielding officials accountable and ensure a smooth democratic process,” said the judge.

He also talked about how the citizenry is entitled to ask questions at the traditional branches and receive replies in an accountable manner.

“The Information Commissions constituted under the RTI Act is also body of immense constitutional significance as it further ensures accountability and transparency in government functioning by creating a mechanism for citizens to access information from public authorities,” said the justice.

Adding that their independence from the government is a hallmark of their functioning, Justice Narasimha said, for this, the RTI Act secures the appointment, tenure, conditions of service, and removal of their officers.

Despite the importance of ‘integrity institutions’, Justice Narasimha said as citizens we have glossed over the significance and underestimated the capacity and relevance of these institutions.

“There is hardly any discussion, reflection and scholarship on public institutions. Importantly, we have collectively failed to re-invigorate and recast some of our institutions which are stuck in an analogue mode in a digital world,” he added.

He also highlighted the tasks that lie ahead of us as a constitutional democracy, like fixing infrastructural and enforcement failures, as well as lack of autonomy.

“My attempt today was only to kindle a serious conversation around how our institutions work. A conversation which I hope will be sustained one ‘not just in terms of legal scholarship, but also which will contribute to the actual working of our democratic Constitution,” added Justice Narasimha.
