Minister: UK sending hundreds of air-defense missiles to Ukraine

The United Kingdom is shipping around 200 air-defense missiles to Ukraine, a British minister says, as Russia launched a wave of missile strikes against targets in the ex-Soviet republic.

In a post on X on Friday, UK Defense Minister Grant Shapps said that Britain was sending hundreds of missiles to Ukraine in an attempt to boost its air defense against waves of Russian strikes.

“The UK is moving rapidly to bolster Ukraine’s air defense, in the wake of [Russian President Vladimir] Putin’s murderous air strikes. Hundreds of British-made air-defense missiles are being sent to ensure Ukraine has what it needs to defend itself from Putin’s barbaric bombardment,” he said.

“Today’s air defense package sends an undeniable message, in the face of Russian barbarity that the UK remains absolutely committed to supporting Ukraine,” Shapps added.

His comments came in the wake of Russia’s largest missile and drone bombardment of the 22-month war.

The UK’s ministry of defense in a statement stressed that these missiles would restock British-gifted air defense systems capable of shooting down Russian drones and missiles “with incredible accuracy.”

Advanced Short Range Air-to-Air Missile (ASRAAM) manufactured by Britain is designed to be launched from aircraft, including the UK’s Typhoon and F-35 fighter jets.

According to the statement by the UK’s ministry of defense, such missiles had been demonstrated to be “very effective yet low-cost solutions to the frontline to meet urgent requirements,” with a reported hit rate of as high as 90 percent against some Russian air targets.

“Ukrainian operators have become adept at their usage and have asked for more missiles to protect their country,” it went on to say, adding that the shipment is part of £2.3 billion of military support to Ukraine from Britain in the 2023-2024 financial year.

Since the onset of the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine in February 2022, the UK has supplied Kiev with various weapons, including the NLAW anti-tank missile launcher and Brimstone 2 missiles.

Britain also became the first Western country to provide Ukrainian forces with a long-range cruise missile named the Storm Shadow. The Storm Shadow is a turbojet-powered missile that cruises at Mach 0.8 to a max range of 560 kilometers.

Furthermore, over 20,000 recruits from the Ukrainian armed forces received training in the UK since the beginning of 2022 under the British-led Operation Interflex.

Separately on Friday, US President Joe Biden said that the latest missile barrage on Ukraine is a “stark reminder” that Putin remained committed to destroying the ex-Soviet republic, stressing, “He must be stopped.”

“It is a stark reminder to the world that, after nearly two years of this devastating war, Putin’s objective remains unchanged. He seeks to obliterate Ukraine and subjugate its people,” Biden added.

Since the start of the war, the US has led a Western coalition sending tens of billions of dollars in weaponry and munitions to Kiev.

Moscow has repeatedly warned Western leaders against the continued supply of weapons and munitions to Ukraine, pointing out that such measures will not stop Russian troops from defending its objectives and that arming Kiev would only prolong the war.

Iran-Azerbaijan exchange of goods up 46% in 2022: Deputy PM

Shahin Mustafayev, who is also the Azeri head of the Iran-Azerbaijan Joint Economic Cooperation Commission, stated that the relations between the two countries are on an upward trajectory under the wise management of the presidents of the two countries.

He pointed to the significance of the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) and also the importance of the economic relations between the two countries and added that the launch of the new bridge can play a leading role in enhancing the transport and transit of goods between the two countries.

Upon the inauguration of the new bridge, the two countries would witness considerable growth in the transit sector in the coming years, the Azeri deputy prime minister added.

Iran: Israel allies losing hope in crisis-ridden Tel Aviv, planning for post-regime period

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian says the Israeli regime is in a situation that even its closest allies are planning for a post-Israel period.

Speaking at a Sunday meeting with members of the Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, Amir-Abdollahian described Operation Al-Aqsa Storm, launched by Palestinian resistance groups against Israel on October 7, as a “turning point” in regional developments.

“Today, the Zionist regime (Israel) is in such a state that even the regime’s friends have no hope for it and are thinking about a post-Israel era,” Zohreh Elahian, a member of the committee, quoted the foreign minister as saying.

He also emphasized that the United States, as the main supporter of Israel, is desperate due to mounting public hatred both at home and abroad.

The lawmaker noted that Amir-Abdollahian also outlined Iran’s diplomatic efforts in support of the Palestinian people, including negotiations with authorities from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Egypt, and Jordan.

Israel’s brutal military offensive in Gaza has killed a total of 21,822 Palestinians, most of them women and children, and wounded 56,451 others. The war has triggered a global outrage, with protesters across the world rallying to call for a ceasefire.

Many have also expressed their disappointment towards politicians and countries who vetoed or abstained from voting for a ceasefire at the United Nations.

Rights organizations, including Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International and Doctors Without Borders, also condemned countries opposing a ceasefire in Gaza, warning that this would result in a humanitarian disaster.

Activists have launched a global campaign, named Countdown2Ceasefire, asking people to turn the New Year’s countdown in their countries into a countdown for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza.

After Months Of War With Hamas, Young Israelis Hope For A Better 2024

After Months Of War With Hamas, Young Israelis Hope For A Better 2024

Militants also took around 250 people hostage, most of whom remain in Gaza.

Jerusalem:

Seconds after ringing in the new year on a lively street in Tel Aviv, some young Israelis found themselves running for cover while others kept the party going with a shrug as missile defence systems intercepted a barrage of rockets overhead.

The attack at the stroke of midnight, just as many were trying to forget about the war in the Gaza Strip, seemed to underscore the fatigue at the ongoing fighting expressed by many of the young revellers gathered to celebrate New Year’s Eve.

“We were all afraid on the corners… my heart was pounding,” Gabriel Zemelman, 26, said in front of a bar after the rocket fire.

“It’s not like the usual life you imagine, even me who was born here,” he added. “It’s terrifying. You just saw the life we live, it’s crazy.”

The Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, claimed responsibility for the attack in a video published on social media, saying they had fired M90 rockets in “response to the massacres of civilians” carried out by Israel.

The Israeli army confirmed the attack, without initially reporting any casualties or damage.

The street in Tel Aviv was crowded with partiers on Sunday night in spite of the ongoing war in Gaza, which has dragged on for nearly three months.

Gelerenter, a 17-year-old student, said she had initially been “afraid” to come out, but ultimately decided to join her friends to celebrate “a new beginning” for 2024.

Musician Boaz Bates said he was “praying for peace, for people to stop hating each other and come together”.

The 25-year-old was sharply critical of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, noting that “at the end of the day, it’s not them who are on the ground fighting”.

– ‘Get on with our lives’ –

Ido Hurvitz had come out for dinner at a restaurant before going to a private party to ring in the new year. He said he hoped “we can learn to live together, because most of us want peace”.

Despite the festive atmosphere, the 24-year-old technology student said his own feelings were lukewarm: “Our country is at war, but we have to get on with our lives, that’s our way of winning.”

Beside him, 24-year-old reservist Shir Taitou, also had mixed feelings, explaining that she had wanted to come out, but was “sad” that some of her friends were mobilised in Gaza.

The war was triggered by Hamas’s bloody October 7 attacks on Israel, which left around 1,140 people dead, most of them civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official figures. Militants also took around 250 people hostage, most of whom remain in Gaza.

In response, Israel launched a devastating offensive in the Gaza Strip, reducing vast areas of Gaza to a ruined wasteland and killing at least 21,822 people, mostly women and children, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.

In front of one Tel Aviv bar, people danced in the street to blaring techno music under a large sign that read “Bring them home now!” — a reference to the hostages.

Some didn’t have the heart to party, like server Ran Stahl, 24, who opted to work the New Year’s party.

“I dressed well tonight because I need to get my head above water,” he said, explaining that one of his friends was among those killed on October 7 at the Supernova music festival.

Since then, he hasn’t felt “allowed” to have fun, he said.

“The minute I start to dance, I feel guilty — the sadness and mourning come back.”

New Mission To Study Black Holes Successfully Launched: ISRO Chief

ISRO chief S Somanath said the launch of the mission was a “success”.

New Delhi:

ISRO today successfully launched its maiden X-Ray Polarimeter Satellite, XPoSat, as part of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle’s (PSLV) C58 mission, marking a significant step forward in the exploration of celestial objects, particularly black holes.

ISRO chief S Somanath said the launch of the mission was a “success”.

“On January 1, 2024, yet another successful mission of PSLV has been accomplished. PSLV-C58 has placed the primary satellite – XPoSat – in the intended orbit of 650 km with 6-degree inclination,” Mr Somanath said.

“The new year has begun with the launch of the PSLV, and we will have an exciting time ahead. This year has just begun, and we will have many more launches. Besides, 2024 is going to be the year of Mission Gaganyaan,” he added.

The 44.4-meter tall PSLV rocket ascended into the sky from the first launch pad in Andhra Pradesh’s Sriharikota at 9:10 am. The liftoff was met with thunderous applause from a multitude of spectators who gathered at the spaceport situated 135 km east of Chennai.

The XPoSat has been placed into a 650 Km Low Earth Orbit, poised to embark on its mission to investigate the polarisation of intense X-ray sources in space.

The primary payload of XPoSat includes the POLIX (Polarimeter Instrument in X-Rays) and XSPECT (X-ray Spectroscopy and Timing). POLIX, designed by the Raman Research Institute, is instrumental in measuring polarimetry parameters, while XSPECT, built by the UR Rao Satellite Centre in Bengaluru, focuses on X-ray spectroscopy and timing. The mission is expected to have a lifespan of around five years, providing an extended window for scientific observations and data collection.
