Dominant Iga Swiatek Sends Poland Into United Cup Quarter-Finals

Iga Swiatek left Spain reeling on Monday as Poland booked a 2-1 win to move into the quarter-finals of the United Cup whilst holders United States were beaten by hosts Australia. The 2-1 victory for Australia propelled them into the last eight as well. World number one Swiatek showed no mercy to Sara Sorribes Tormo in a 6-2, 6-1 singles victory before teaming up with Hubert Hurkacz to clinch the tie with a 6-0, 6-0 mixed doubles thrashing in just 53 minutes. Hurkacz was ambushed in the day’s opening singles, losing 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

The top-seeded Poles finished Group A play with a perfect 2-0 record and await a last-eight opponent.

Swiatek, who has lost only seven games in two singles matches to start her countdown to the Australian Open, said playing mixed doubles was good experience.

“It’s lessons for the future and great practice,” the 22-year-old said. “I hardly ever play mixed. You use different skills, it’s about feeling the geometry of the court.”

Hurkacz credited his teammate with doing most of the hard yards.

“She carried me throughout the whole match, in every game she was making amazing shots,” the world number nine said.

Australia had to work hard to join Poland in the quarter-finals but emerged with an  excellent over the United States.

Alex de Minaur got the ball rolling for the hosts, nullifying the big serve of American Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-2.

The 12th-ranked winner needed four match points and 90 minutes to win.

“Today was a little bit of “new year, new me,” said de Minaur.

“I was in a great headspace, things worked out well.

“I played the type of tennis I wanted to play, I’m happy with that.

“He has explosive firepower and I could not let him dictate play.”

Ajla Tomljanovic was unable to get past world number five Jessica Pegula, with the American levelling the tie after a tight 7-6 (8/6), 6-3 victory.

But Australia completed the evening’s work in mixed doubles, with Storm Hunter and Matt Ebden defeating Pegula and Rajeev Ram 6-3, 6-1.

“We were playing for our lives,” Ebden said.

“We knew we had to to everything possible, every point, every game.”

Hunter said it was a very special moment.

“Playing in front of the home crowd and playing with Matty, a Perth local, it is a dream come true to win and go into the quarter-finals at home,” she said.

In Sydney, France prevailed by the same score over Germany.

Germany’s two-time ATP Finals champion Alexander Zverev needed to dig deep to get past Adrian Mannarino 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 and give Germany a 1-0 lead over France.

It seemed they would wrap up the tie when former world number one Angelique Kerber took the first set against Caroline Garcia 6-1, but she crumbled to lose the next two 6-2, 6-2 and send it to a mixed doubles decider.

Kerber, on her way back from maternity leave, returned to team up with Zverev against Garcia and Edouard Roger-Vasselin, with the French clinching the tie by winning the mixed doubles rubber 7-6 (7/4), 2-6, 12-10.

Earlier in Sydney, a sharp Casper Ruud won his second straight singles match before backing up in the mixed doubles to steer Norway past Croatia.

World number 24 Donna Vekic ground past unheralded Malene Helgo 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 to give the Croats a winning start to the Group F tie.

But three-time Grand Slam finalist Ruud swept past Borna Coric 6-4, 6-1 in just 89 minutes to level proceedings, then partnered with Ulrikke Eikeri to beat Vekic and Ivan Dodig 6-2, 3-6, 10-7.

It was a much-needed win for Norway, who lost to the Netherlands at the weekend.

“I’m motivated for the new year, I’m fresh and I’m ready,” said world number 11 Ruud. “Another great singles match. I’m very happy to start the new year that way.”

The data on rejected candidates was not provided in detail but jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party has claimed that a vast majority of rejections were against its nominated candidates.

Similarly, the ROs approved 16,262 nomination papers for the four provincial assemblies, out of the documents submitted by 18,478 candidates, including 17,670 males and 808 females.

Nomination papers of 2,216 candidates, including 2,081 men and 135 women, failed to get the approval of ROs for provincial assemblies.

A total of 25,951 papers were submitted, while nomination papers of 3,240 candidates, including 3,015 male candidates and 225 females, were rejected.

The Election Commission of Pakistan provided that data of accepted candidates after a five-day scrutiny stage which ended on December 30.

The appeals will be decided upon by the Election Commission of Pakistan’s Appellate Tribunal by January 10, followed by subsequent publication of the revised list of candidates on January 11.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief Imran Khan is among the candidates whose papers have been rejected.

However, leading papers of the leading candidates of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), including Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz, Shehbaz Sharif, Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari have been accepted.

Hyderabad: Vanishing lakes pose grave threat

Consistent drying up of water bodies across Hyderabad to affect ecological balance, as per TSPCB data

Hyderabad: A concerning trend has emerged in the landscape of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), as several lakes have consistently dried up, posing severe threat to the region’s ecological balance.

Data from the Telangana State Pollution Control Board (TSPCB) reveals a distressing reality, indicating the persistent and alarming state of numerous water bodies, with some even vanishing entirely from the city’s map.

Among the findings, Chinna Cheruvu in Mansoorabad, Saroornagar, stands out as one of the gravest concerns. The lake has remained desiccated since 2018, painting a grim picture of its ecological demise. Mangalavani Kunta in Hafeezpet, Serilingampally, shares the same fate, with the TSPCB recording its non-existence since 2018, a situation that has persisted relentlessly.

Lake 3

The revelations extend to Khanamet Lake, Serilingampally, which not only dried up in 2018 but has now completely vanished from the records, classified as “no existence of lake” since 2022. The degradation of Mondi Kunta in the same area, previously in fair condition till 2022, took a sharp turn towards desiccation from January 2023 onwards.

According to the TSPSCB data, Masjid Banda Lake in Kondapur, Serilingampally, suffered encroachment in August 2023. Additionally, lakes like Meddela Kunta in Gajularamaram of Quthbullapur, Chinnarayan Cheruvu in Alwal, Marshabai Kunta in Katedan, Teegalasagara Cheruvu in Patancheru have become inaccessible, indicating a gradual but persistent decline in their ecological health since early 2023.

Concerned over the developments, environmental activists and civic leaders are rallying for immediate coordinated action from government bodies and local authorities.

Madhulika Choudhary of NGO Dhruvansh, emphasised the pivotal role of sewage diversion in lake desiccation. She stressed the necessity of separate stormwater and sewage drains, citing common drains as a risk factor leading to encroachment and drying up.

Manoj Vidiyala, co-founder of Dha3r NGO, voiced disappointment over the ongoing struggle to revive Mansoorabad Chinna Cheruvu. He highlighted encroachment issues, with half the lake lost and the remaining portion becoming a hotspot for illicit activities, posing a constant threat to the lake’s restoration efforts.

“The former government’s initiatives to create walkways and restore the area failed to yield positive results. Encroachments and illicit activities continue to plague the lake, hindering its rejuvenation,” lamented Vidiyala.

The situation in Hyderabad’s lakes highlights the urgent need for robust conservation measures. Activists stress the significance of community involvement and responsible governance in preserving these vital ecosystems. They assert that safeguarding these lakes isn’t merely an environmental duty but a moral imperative to protect Hyderabad’s ecological heritage for future generations.

Iran hails firm stance of Yemen's Ansarullah in support of Palestine

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian hails firm stance of Yemen’s Ansarullah resistance movement in support of the oppressed Palestinian people in the face of the Israeli regime’s crimes and aggression.

Amir-Abdollahian made the remark in a Monday meeting with the spokesman for Yemen’s Ansarullah, Mohammed Abdul-Salam, who is in Tehran to hold talks with senior Iranian officials.

Israel waged the genocidal war on Gaza on October 7 after the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas carried out the cross-border Operation Al-Aqsa Storm against the usurping entity in retaliation for its intensified atrocities against the Palestinian people.

However, 87 days into the invasion, the Tel Aviv regime has failed to achieve its objectives of “destroying Hamas” and finding Israeli captives despite killing 21,978 Palestinians, mostly children and women. The war has also injured 57,697 people.

In his remarks, Amir-Abdollahian also voiced Iran’s support for the promotion of peace in Yemen and the advancing negotiations with Saudi Arabia.

The top Iranian diplomat pledged Tehran’s support for the Yemeni people’s will and demand.

The senior Ansarullah official, for his part, lauded Iran’s unwavering political support for the resistance front and briefed the Iranian foreign minister on the latest developments regarding the promotion of peace in Yemen.

Back in September, Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Ministry welcomed the “positive results” of talks with a delegation from Yemen’s Ansarullah resistance movement aimed at bringing an end to the kingdom’s eight-year war on its southern neighbor.

In a statement, the ministry supported a political solution to the Yemen conflict, after the Yemeni team, along with an Omani mediator, returned to Sana’a following five days of talks with Saudi officials in Riyadh.

Onus on US for Israel’s war in Gaza: Qalibaf

In a separate meeting with Abdul-Salam on Monday, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf described the US as the main culprit in Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza.

Qalibaf added that were it not for the presence of the US and its military support, it would not have been possible for the Israeli regime to withstand the first blow delivered to the regime as a result of Al-Aqsa Storm Operation, launched by the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas on October 7.

He reaffirmed Iran’s support for the resistance front and added called the US the root cause of problems in the Muslim world.

Abdul-Salam, for his part, voiced the Yemeni people’s strong support for the Palestinians in their battle against the Israeli regime.

He hailed Iran’s support for the Yemeni people and added that all Yemen’s capacities, including its weapons, aim to serve the interests of Muslims.

Yemen is currently capable of taking an operational position alongside the resistance front, Abdul-Salam said, adding that his country follows a policy that stands up to the bullying of Israel and the US in the region.

Iran’s top security official lauds Yemen’s pro-Palestine brave measures

Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Ali Akbar Ahmadian on Sunday lauded brave measures by the Yemeni government and nation to support the Palestinian people in the face of Israel’s savage attacks.

In a meeting with the senior Ansarullah official, the two sides discussed issues of common interest and leading developments in the region.

Hanumanji Will Bring Them: Minister On Those Not Attending Ram Temple Event

'Hanumanji Will Bring Them': Minister On Those Not Attending Ram Temple Event

The concentration ceremony of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya will be held on January 22

New Delhi:

Ahead of the grand consecration ceremony of the Ram Temple in Uttar Pradesh’s Ayodhya, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Monday said that Hanumanji will carry those who are not attending the ceremony to the venue.

Speaking on the concentration ceremony, Mr Pradhan said, “After many years of struggle, the consecration ceremony of Ram Temple will be held on January 22. From today on, Ram devotees are going door-to-door and giving invitations. Everyone should not go there on January 22. After the inauguration, people can go there following the guidelines of the UP government and the temple committee.”

The concentration ceremony of the grand Ram Temple will be held on January 22, which will be attended by prominent personalities, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

When asked about those who are not going to attend the consecration ceremony, Mr Pradhan said, “Unko Hanumanji le aayenge (Lord Hanuman will bring them)”.

There is confusion among the opposition ranks about attending the inauguration ceremony of Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. CPI (M) leader Sitaram Yechury announced in a post on X that he will not be attending the inauguration ceremony of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya.

He alleged that the Bhartiya Janata party is using the Ram temple for ‘political gain’.

“The CPI (M) policy has been to respect religious beliefs and safeguard the right of every individual to pursue their beliefs. Religion is a personal choice, not to be converted into an instrument for political gain. This is a state-sponsored function in the presence of the PM and UP CM,” he said in a post on X.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut also said in his statement that his party workers are not going to attend the Ayodhya Ram Mandir opening ceremony.

Taking a jibe at the Union government, the UBT Sena Rajya Sabha MP said, “They have an advertising system according to which they work. They are extremely good at advertising things. The Ayodhya Ram Mandir opening ceremony is a way to distract people in the country from real issues like unemployment, inflation, Kashmir, and Manipur.”

“This is all politics; who wants to attend an event by the BJP? This is not a national event. This is the BJP’s programme; this is the BJP’s rally. ‘Usme pavitrata kahan hai?’…We will visit (Ayodhya) after the BJP’s programme is over,” the UBT Sena MP added.

However, Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge have accepted the invitation to attend the consecration ceremony of the Ram Temple.

Meanwhile, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu also asserted that he would attend the ceremony, whether the invitation came or not.

“If the invitation comes or not, we shall go there; there is no second thought about attending the ceremony,” CM Sukhu told ANI.

"Practice What You…": Navjot Sidhu Slams Arvind Kejriwal On Summons

'Practice What You...': Navjot Sidhu Slams Arvind Kejriwal On Summons

Arvind Kejriwal was first called by the central agency to appear on November 2.

New Delhi:

Ahead of Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Chief Arvind Kejriwal’s appearance before the Enforcement Directorate in connection with the alleged excise policy scam, Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu on Monday attacked him citing an old ‘X’ post of his.

Mr Kejriwal, earlier, wrote in an ‘X’ post, “As a patriot Indian, my head hangs in shame when our corrupt leaders do not appear before ED and CBI even after multiple summonses by the investigating agencies when they should have resigned from their post immediately as soon as the allegations were made.”

Earlier in December, Mr Kejriwal skipped ED summons twice, which were issued to him in connection with the alleged excise policy scam.

As per ANI sources, Mr Kejriwal is likely to appear before the Enforcement Directorate on January 3 in connection with the excise policy case.

On December 22, ED issued a third summons to Chief Minister Kejriwal in connection with the excise policy case, asking him to appear before the agency on January 3.

Mr Kejriwal was issued the second summons by the ED on December 18, asking him to depose at the federal agency’s office on December 21, which the Chief Minister skipped.

The Delhi Chief Minister was first called by the central agency to appear on November 2, but he did not depose, alleging that the notice was “vague, motivated and unsustainable in law.”

Mr Sidhu took a swipe at the Delhi CM, stating, “Practice what you preach”.

“Practice what you preach…face the ED music even if you don’t like the tune … resign from your post till you come clean like I did in Dec 2006,” he wrote in a post on ‘X’.

Earlier in 2006, Mr Sidhu (then BJP leader) had resigned from the post of Lok Sabha MP following his conviction in a case of death in a road rage involving him.
