New Delhi: Developed countries spent $378 billion subsidising fossil fuels in 2023, surpassing the $ 300 billion they have collectively committed to provide annually to the developing world by 2035 to tackle climate change, according to the latest data.

An analysis by the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) showed that government support for fossil fuels reached at least $ 1.5 trillion in 2023, the second-highest annual total on record, after 2022 when the Russia-Ukraine war triggered a global fossil fuel price crisis.

The 10 largest subsidisers of fossil fuels in 2023 included Russia, Germany, Iran, China, Japan, India, Saudi Arabia, the Netherlands, France, and Indonesia.

The data revealed that 23 developed nations (Annex II countries) — mandated under the UN climate convention to provide climate finance to the developing world — spent $ 378 billion on fossil fuel subsidies.

At the UN climate conference in Baku, Azerbaijan, last month, these nations committed to providing $ 300 billion to developing countries by 2035 to help them tackle climate change — a far cry from the $1.3 trillion that the Global South needs annually to cope with the rapidly warming world.

India, Bolivia, Nigeria, and Malawi, speaking on behalf of a group of 45 least developed countries (LDCs), severely criticised the new climate finance package for the developing world.

India argued that $ 300 billion is insufficient to implement ambitious national climate plans known as Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and pointed out that when adjusted for inflation, it falls short of the previous $ 100 billion goal agreed in 2009.

IISD researchers said developed countries spending $ 378 billion on fossil fuel subsidies shows that public funds are available but are being “directed in the wrong direction”.

They suggested that fiscal space freed up through fossil fuel subsidy reforms could be redirected to meet climate finance commitments.

Fossil fuels — coal, oil, and gas — are the largest contributors to climate change, accounting for over 75 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions and nearly 90 per cent of all carbon dioxide emissions.

Although many governments have taken steps to reduce the carbon intensity of their economies, certain policies still encourage fossil fuel production and consumption.

Fossil fuel subsidies are a prime example of such policies.

A fossil fuel subsidy refers to a government intervention that provides benefits or preferences for fossil fuel production or consumption relative to alternatives.

Iran condemns ‘violent’ attack on Christmas market in Germany

A police vehicle is seen among closed stalls on the site of a car-ramming attack on a Christmas market in the center of Magdeburg, eastern Germany, on December 21, 2024.

The spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry has strongly condemned a “violent” car attack at a crowded Christmas market in Germany that left several dead and dozens injured.

Esmaeil Baghaei on Saturday expressed sympathy with the families of the victims and hoped for a swift recovery for all the injured.

At least five people were killed and over 200 injured after a black BMW barreled through the crowd at high speed in the German city of Magdeburg, located about 130 kilometers southwest of Berlin, on Friday when the market was filled with customers.

Police arrested a Saudi psychiatry doctor, 50, at the scene. He lived in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Saturday condemned the “terrible, insane” car-ramming attack on the crowded Christmas market.

In a statement on Friday on social media platform X, the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed “solidarity with the German people and the families of the victims.”

It “affirmed its rejection of violence.”

Putin Meets Slovak Prime Minister at Kremlin: Russian Television

Moscow:

Russian President Vladimir Putin held talks at the Kremlin on Sunday with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, one of the few European leaders he has stayed friendly with since the eruption of hostilities with Ukraine, according to Russian television.

“Putin is currently holding talks in the Kremlin with Slovak Prime Minister Fico,” Russian TV journalist Pavel Zarubin, a Kremlin insider, posted on his Telegram channel, along with a short video showing the two leaders.

The visit by Fico, whose country is both a NATO and European Union member, had not been previously announced.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov told Zarubin however that it had been arranged “a few days ago”.

Peskov did not give details of the talks but said it could be “presumed” that supplies of Russian gas would be discussed.

Ukraine announced this year that it would not renew a contract allowing the transit of Russian gas through its territory that runs out on December 31.

Slovakia and Hungary, which rely on Russian gas, have raised concerns about the prospect of losing supplies.

Fico ended military aid to Ukraine when he became prime minister again in October 2023, and like Hungarian counterpart Viktor Orban has called for peace talks.

Fico announced in November that he would go to Moscow in May for ceremonies to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.

Minister Komatireddy demands Allu Arjun to apologise to CM Revanth

Says it is absurd that the actor’s legal team did not permit him to visit Sri Tej, who is undergoing treatment in the hospital

Minister Komatireddy demands Allu Arjun to apologise to CM Revanth

Hyderabad: After slamming Allu Arjun‘s ‘Pushpa 2’ movie on Saturday, Cinematography Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy on Sunday demanded that the actor tender an apology to Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy for stating that his image was being damaged. Several other Congress leaders too came out attacking the actor.

Finding fault with the actor for countering the Chief Minister’s remarks made in the Assembly, the Minister said when the issue was being discussed in the House, the actor was claiming that his image was being damaged. “It is absurd that the actor’s legal team did not permit him to visit Sri Tej, who is undergoing treatment in the hospital,” Venkat Reddy said.

Echoing a similar opinion, Government Whip Aadi Srinivas also raised objections over Allu Arjun’s comments and alleged that the actor had no remorse. The Chief Minister had responded to an MLA’s query in the Assembly over the Sandhya theatre incident. Despite police informing the actor that a woman had died in the stampede, he continued to watch the movie, the Government Whip said.

“Is your name and fame important than a woman’s life and a child’s health?” Srinivas asked. Congress MP from Bhongir C Kiran Kumar Reddy said the actor was more concerned about the movie collections than people’s lives. During the press meet, the actor read a script written by his legal team and did not speak like a real hero, he said.

Al-Jolani, Fidan call for removal of West's sanction on Syria

Al-Jolani said in a joint press conference with the Turkish Foreign Minister after the meeting, “I discussed strengthening relations with Ankara in talks with the Turkish Foreign Minister and he has expressed his readiness to help Syria.”

Stating that “we will have strategic relations with Ankara, the HTS leader called Turkey a “friend of the Syrian people”.

According to the Anadolu Agency, the commander of the armed rebels ruling Damascus also said that the United States and Western countries should lift sanctions on Syria.

The Turkish Foreign Minister also claimed that the past period under Assad government was a dark period in Syria’s history, further claiming “We are moving towards a bright future. We will support the people of Syria and will not abandon them.”

Fidan announced that during his meeting with Al-Jolani, he discussed the issue of “stability in Syria and the return of refugees.”

The top Turkish diplomat also called for an internal consensus in Syria, saying that, “Arab countries should contact the new Syrian leaders and should hurry in that regard.”

Alaaeddin: The magic lamp of NorthEast United FC, Indian Super League’s star performer

Hyderabad: Alaaeddin Ajaraie has taken the Indian Super League (ISL) by storm with his electrifying performances for NorthEast United FC. The Moroccan forward has been a revelation this season, scoring 11 goals and providing 4 assists in just 11 matches.

When he arrived in India, few knew about him, but he quickly silenced any doubts. Breaking Elano’s record of scoring in six consecutive matches, Alaaeddin has set multiple benchmarks, including becoming the fastest player to score more than 10 goals in ISL history. He’s also the first to net three consecutive braces, holding the joint record for the longest goal-scoring streak in the league. Currently at the top of the top-scorers’ chart, he is undoubtedly one of the most feared forwards in the competition.

The 31-year-old’s stellar form in the initial games propelled NorthEast United to a strong start. Scoring 11 goals in the first eight matches. Reflecting on his success, Alaaeddin humbly credited his teammates for his achievements. “I’m happy to have scored 11 goals so far, but I must thank my teammates because without them, this wouldn’t have been possible,” he said.

However, the Moroccan’s scoring streak has recently cooled off. In their last three games, NorthEast United has managed only one win (against Punjab FC) and suffered two losses (against East Bengal and Mohun Bagan SG). Alaaeddin did not score in these fixtures. Despite this dip in form, both the player and the team see Monday’s clash against a struggling Hyderabad FC at GMC Balayogi Stadium as an opportunity to regain their momentum.

Hyderabad FC, languishing at the bottom of the standings and plagued by defensive frailties, could provide the perfect platform for Alaaeddin and his teammates to bounce back. Yet, the Moroccan remains cautious. “We always prepare for every game with 100 per cent focus. The match against Hyderabad FC will be no different. We respect our opponents. As our coach Juan Pedro Benali says, we must stay humble because, in football, any team can beat anyone,” he remarked.

NorthEast United’s transformation under Benali has been remarkable. Last season, the team narrowly missed the ISL playoffs by a single point but made significant progress, including a semifinal finish in the Durand Cup. This season, they started with a bang by lifting the Durand Cup—the club’s first-ever silverware. Many now consider them serious playoff contenders, and Alaaeddin shares that optimism. “Winning the Durand Cup was a great start. In the ISL, the season is long, and we focus on one game at a time. Our main objective is to qualify for the playoffs,” he stated.

Beyond his goal-scoring prowess, Alaaeddin has won hearts with his unique celebration, inspired by the anime character Luffy from One Piece. His iconic ‘fist’ pose has gone viral on social media and fans love it. “I like Luffy’s character, and that inspired my celebration. I started it this season because I want people to remember me that way. Seeing our young Highlanders celebrate like me makes me happy,” he concluded.

Mumbai: The rupee saw some recovery from its all-time low level and appreciated 6 paise to 85.07 against the US dollar in early trade on Friday. Forex traders said the rupee is likely to remain in a weakening mode due to significant dollar demand. The Dollar Index (DXY) is expected to remain elevated, with resistance near the 110 level in the near-term amid a reduced likelihood of significant Fed rate cuts in 2025.

The Federal Reserve cut rates by 25 basis points on Wednesday, but its forward guidance for 2025 has softened, with expectations reduced from four rate cuts to just two. At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened at 85.07, registering a gain of 6 paise from its previous close. It was later trading at 85.10 against the greenback, a tad above the all-time low level.

On Thursday, the rupee depreciated 19 paise and breached the crucial 85 level to close at a fresh all-time low of 85.13 against the US dollar. “The Indian rupee is facing headwinds from both global and local factors. As the Federal Reserve’s decision to adopt a cautious approach toward rate cuts in 2025 triggered a more than 1 per cent correction in Indian equities.

“While on the domestic front, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) appears constrained in its ability to intervene as effectively as earlier this year, partly due to tightening banking system liquidity,” CR Forex Advisors MD Amit Pabari said. As a result, the USDINR pair has breached the 85.00 mark. In the near-term, the pair is likely to consolidate within a range of 84.70 to 85.20, he said.

Ayatollah Sistani opposes dissolution of PMF

The Iraqi government has received numerous requests from various international and regional entities to disband the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) and surrender their weapons, according to sources who spoke anonymously in an interview with Al-Akhbar on Sunday.

A source informed the Lebanese newspaper about the two visits made by Mohamed Al Hassan, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq, to Najaf for meetings with Ayatollah Sistani.

The purpose of the second visit was to ask Ayatollah Sistani to issue a religious order (fatwa) regarding the separation and dissolution of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) or its integration with other security ministries, the source said, adding that this request was significant because Ayatollah Sistani’s previous fatwa was instrumental in forming the PMF. However, the prominent Shia cleric, Grand Ayatollah al-Sistani, declined to meet with the UN Secretary-General’s representative.

The source, who is close to the Iraqi government, said that the demand for the dissolution of the Popular Mobilization Forces is driven by Western interests, noting that these kinds of issues are not new, particularly being raised by the United States, which has consistently expressed its dissatisfaction with Iraqi resistance groups.

The other Iraqi source reported that Ayatollah al-Sistani met with Mohammed al-Hasan for the first time to discuss the regional situation and Iraq’s interests.

In the second meeting held a few days ago, Ayatollah al-Sistani declined to meet with the UN Secretary-General’s representative. Instead, he sent his son Mohammed Ridha al-Sistani, to welcome him.

According to the source, this indicates that during the first meeting, the UN envoy urged Ayatollah al-Sistani to consider dissolving the Popular Mobilization Forces, noting that Ayatollah al-Sistani chose not to meet with al-Hasan during the second visit suggesting his opposition to this proposal.

Khammam: Task force police conducted surprise inspections in various parts of Khammam city to check narcotic drug consumption.

Following the directions from Commissioner of Police Sunil Dutt, led by the task force ACP Ravi, the task force police conducted inspections on Saturday and Sunday in many areas which were said to be addas (spots) for consumption of ganja.

The ACP stated that surprise checks were conducted to control illegal activities along with ganja and other drug consumption. “Such surprise inspections would continue from now on. Strict legal action would be taken against those who sell or supply drugs like ganja,” he added.

Youths were destroying their precious future by getting addicted to ganja. Cases would also be registered against those who use ganja and sent to jail. Parents should observe their children’s behaviour and habits from time to time, he suggested.

In addition to the ganja addas in the city, inspections were carried out in area like Rotary Nagar tank, SBIT, Mamata Medical College, Shanti Nagar School, Church compound, Zaheerpura Park, Prakash Nagar, NTR Circle, new bus stand, Gattaiah Centre, Sarita Clinic, Saradhi Nagar lower railway bridge and Gollagudem, the ACP informed.

Iran: US airstrikes on Yemen war crimes, violation of international law

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei

Iran has strongly condemned the US’s “repeated and aggressive” airstrikes on Yemen as war crimes and a violation of international law and the United Nations Charter.

“The US’s aggressive and repeated attacks on Yemen are a gross violation of the principles and rules of international law and the United Nations Charter,” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said on Sunday.

These attacks are also a violation of the rules and principles of international humanitarian law and an example of a war crime, he added.

He hailed the solidarity of the Yemeni people with the oppressed people in Palestine which is rooted in the Yemenis’ faith and belief in supporting the oppressed against occupation and genocide.

The Iranian spokesperson also called on the Muslim world, regional countries and the UN to take serious measures against the attacks by the US, Britain and the Israeli regime on Yemen.

The United States and Britain have been carrying out military strikes in Yemen for nearly a year in violation of the country’s sovereignty and international law.

The illegal air raids came in response to Yemen’s maritime campaign in solidarity with the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip amid a genocidal Israeli war.

The Gaza Health Ministry said on Sunday that at least 45,259 people have been killed and 107,627 injured during more than 14 months of the Israeli regime’s genocidal war.
