Contradictory statements from Komatireddy, Sridhar Babu on GHMC bifurcation trigger confusion

Recently, Roads and Buildings Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy announced plans to divide the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) into four separate corporations, citing administrative efficiency. However, Industries Minister D Sridhar Babu contradicted this statement during a Legislative Council session, clarifying that there were no such plans under consideration by the State government.

Contradictory statements from Komatireddy, Sridhar Babu on GHMC bifurcation trigger confusion

Hyderabad: Here is yet another classic case of lack of coordination and communication among Ministers in the Congress government.

It was not long ago that Roads and Buildings Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy announced that the State government was planning to divide the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) into four corporations. However, on Saturday, in sharp contrast to Venkat Reddy’s statement, Industries Minister D Sridhar Babu said in the Legislative Council that there were no such plans.

On October 4, the R&B Minister participated in the Assocham’s Urban Infrastructure Summit – 2024 held here in the city. Industrialists, realtors, academicians and officials had also attended the meeting. Addressing the gathering, Venkat Reddy had declared that GHMC would be divided into four corporations and the exercise would be done “after the elections” (possibly the polls to the GHMC).

“Population in Greater Hyderabad is almost 1.5 crore. That’s the reason the State government is planning to divide the GHMC into four corporations. There will be four Mayors after the coming elections,” Venkat Reddy had said.

However, in a conflicting version, Sridhar Babu said on Saturday that there were no plans to divide GHMC. Giving clarifications on the GHMC (Amendment) Bill 2024 in the Legislative Council, the Minister said the government had no plans to divide GHMC into three or four corporations. There was no truth in the campaign that the entire region within Outer Ring Road (ORR) limit would be brought under the GHMC jurisdiction. The corporations under ORR limits would continue to exist, the Minister had stated.

There have been reports that the Congress government was contemplating to divide GHMC into four corporations. This was basically planned on the lines of four Urban Local Bodies in New Delhi. In fact, in March, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy had directed officials to work out plans for the civic body considering its rapid development. However, with his own Ministers now coming out with conflicting statements, there is confusion on what is actually on the cards for the GHMC.

Israel bombards civilian facilities in Gaza, killing 8 people

Reports said early on Sunday that eight Palestinians were killed in an Israeli airstrike on Gaza City’s Musa bin Nusair school, which is sheltering displaced families.

Israeli forces also opened fire on the al-Awda hospital, in Jabalia refugee camp.

Another Israeli raid was reported on the Kamal Adwan hospital, in Beit Lahia, wounding several people.

Citing medical sources, the Palestinian news agency WAFA said that the hospital came under intense and indiscriminate shelling, with the occupation forces targeting the medical center using bombs, artillery shells, and sniper fire.

It added that the assault caused significant damage to the hospital’s power generators and various departments.

Meanwhile, some reports said Israeli forces have blown up two explosive robots, causing significant destruction to residential buildings near the medical facility.

On manpower front also we have a joint working group that exclusively looks at manpower-related issues of Indians in Kuwait and that working group usually looks at and addresses the major issues that are there in this sector but in the general context the leaders discussed about the contribution of the of the Indian community here,” Mr Chatterjee said.

We will see intensification of exchanges and visits in the coming days to materialize whatever has been planned by the leaders of both the countries,” he said.

Mr Chatterjee added that health is an important sector that has been identified for cooperation.

“Health and pharmaceuticals is one important area which both the sides have identified for cooperation and that could include investments by the Kuwaiti side in India or expansion of the trade basket to increase pharmaceutical exports also from India. Pharmaceutical would continue to be one of the important sectors of cooperation between our two countries,’ he said.

Retired Cricketer Ashwin’s wife pens heartfelt tribute after his sudden retirement

Dear Ashwin, from not knowing how to put a kit bag together to following you to stadiums all over the world, rooting for you, watching you and learning from you, it has been an absolute pleasure

Retired Cricketer Ashwin’s wife pens heartfelt tribute after his sudden retirement

Ravichandran Ashwin

Chennai: India’s ace spinner Ravichandran Ashwin’s wife Prithi Narayanan has penned a heartfelt tribute for her husband following his recent retirement from the game, saying “it is time to set the burden of being you down” and embrace life beyond the game.

Ashwin made a surprise announcement of his retirement after the drawn third Test at Brisbane. The veteran cricketer picked up just one wicket during the tour, including the 10-wicket loss at Adelaide.

The 38-year-old retired with a stellar record of 537 Test wickets at an average of 24, in addition to scoring 3,503 runs, including six centuries. He also claimed 156 wickets in ODIs and 72 in T20Is.

Describing her tribute as a “Love letter from a fan girl”, Prithi wrote on instagram: “Dear Ashwin, from not knowing how to put a kit bag together to following you to stadiums all over the world, rooting for you, watching you and learning from you, it has been an absolute pleasure. The world you introduced me to gave me the privilege to watch and enjoy a sport that I love from close quarters.

“It also showed me how much passion, hardwork and discipline is needed to keep your head above water. And sometimes even that is not enough. I remember us talking about why you, R Ashwin, had to do all of this and a lot more to even stay relevant in the scheme of things.”

Ashwin, who debuted in 2011 against the West Indies, earned a reputation for his relentless pursuit of excellence. His near-equal tally of 269 wickets against right-handers and 268 against left-handers highlights his versatility.

“How awards, the best of stats, the POMs, the accolades, the records didn’t matter if you didn’t sharpen your skill sets constantly and did not put in the work. Sometimes, nothing is enough,” Prithi continued.

“As you end your wonderful international run, I only want to tell you that it’s all good. It is all going to be good. It is time to set the burden of being you down. Live life on your terms, make space for those extra calories, make time for your family, make time to do absolutely nothing, share memes all day, create a new bowling variation, bug our kids out of their minds. Just do it all.”

Prithi, who has been a constant companion on Ashwin’s cricketing journey, reflected on his meticulous approach to his craft.

“When I saw Ashwins PC, I thought of small and big moments. Many many memories over the last 13-14 years. The big wins , the MOS awards, the quiet silence in our room after an intense game, the sound of the shower running for much longer than usual on some evenings post play, the scratch of pencil over paper as he scribbled thoughts down, the constant streaming of footage videos when he is making a game plan, the calm of meditative breathing before leaving for each game, certain songs playing on repeat while he unwinds..

“The times we weeped in joy – after the CT final, after the MCG win, after the Sydney draw, The Gabba win, after making a comeback in T20s…the times we sat in silence and the times when we had our hearts broken,” she wrote.

Sydney: Health authorities in Australia’s second-most populous state have issued a warning over the spread of a flesh-eating ulcer.

The Department of Health in Victoria on Friday said that cases of Buruli ulcer are spreading across the state, including in inner Melbourne, Xinhua news agency reported.

Buruli ulcer is a bacterial infection that researchers believe is spread from possums to humans by mosquitoes. Cases initially present as a painless lump or wound that can slowly develop into a destructive ulcer.

If left untreated, the flesh-eating ulcer can lead to permanent disfigurement and long-term disability.

The Department of Health’s warning said that the highest risk of infection occurs during warmer months but that it can take four to five months for an ulcer to develop.

As of December 17, there had been 344 confirmed Buruli ulcer infections in Victoria in 2024, the department said, compared to 362 at the same time in 2023, 338 in 2022, 286 in 2021 and 217 in 2020.

“Everyone is susceptible to infection. The disease can occur at any age, but Buruli ulcer notifications are highest in people aged 60 years and above in Victoria,” the health alert said.

Infection is not transmissible from person to person, but household members of a confirmed case in Victoria have been advised to monitor for symptoms as they may have been exposed to the same environmental source.

When recognised early, diagnostic testing is straightforward and treatment can significantly reduce skin loss and tissue damage, the Department of Health said.

Victoria’s 6.9 million people have been advised to take preventative measures by avoiding mosquito bites.

RBI slashes cash reserve ratio by 0.5 pc to spur growth, leaves repo rate unchanged-Telangana Today

The CRR has been reduced from 4.5 per cent to 4 per cent. This is the first time since March 2020 that the CRR has been cut

RBI slashes cash reserve ratio by 0.5 pc to spur growth, leaves repo rate unchanged

Shaktikanta Das

Mumbai: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Friday slashed the cash reserve ratio (CRR) for banks by 0.5 per cent to make more funds available for lending to spur economic growth, but kept the key policy repo rate unchanged at 6.5 per cent with an eye on inflation.

The CRR has been reduced from 4.5 per cent to 4 per cent. This is the first time since March 2020 that the CRR has been cut.

The CRR is the proportion of deposits that banks have to set aside as idle cash in the system. The CRR cut will infuse Rs 1.16 lakh crore into the banking system and bring down market interest rates.

The monetary policy decision maintains a delicate balance between controlling inflation and pushing up the growth rate in a slowing economy, RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das said that the decision had been taken by the monetary policy committee with a 4:2 majority after a detailed assessment of the macroeconomic outlook.

He said, “India’s growth story is still intact. Inflation is on the declining path, but we cannot overlook the significant risks in outlook. This risk cannot be underestimated.”

The RBI Governor was optimistic on the outlook for the economy, observing that “the balance between inflation and growth is well poised. He also pointed out that the country’s external sector is stable and foreign exchange reserves have scaled a new peak.”

Das said that the RBI would be nimble and flexible in managing the economy. The monetary policy action gives flexibility and optionality to the monetary policy committee to keep in sync with the evolving economic outlook. Price stability is important to people because it impacts their purchasing power, said RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das, adding that ensuring “durable” price stability is critical to ensuring high growth in the economy.

Policy support may be needed if the growth slowdown “lingers”, Das said. For now, the central bank sees economic growth as resilient, Das said. Notwithstanding the recent aberrations in growth and inflation, domestic conditions are on a balanced path, he added. Das also stated that there was no role for complacency, especially in the backdrop of current geopolitical conditions that trigger uncertainty in financial and commodity markets.

The sensational NH-44 dacoity case was detected within a week by the Wanaparthy police with the arrest of four gang members while two others are absconding

Wanaparthy police crack National Highway dacoity, four held, stolen properties recovered

Wanaparthy: Four days after the sensational dacoity on on National Highway 44 near Pebbair, the Wanaparthy police managed to identity the dacoits and nabbed four members of the ‘pardi gang’ and recovered the looted gold ornaments.

The dacoity was reported on December 18 on National Highway – 44 connecting Bengaluru with Hyderabad, when a group of pilgrims returning from Tirumala stopped their car on the highway near a resting point. The car occupants were asleep, when the dacoit gang struck.

Initially, they took away the luggage which was tied on top of the car and carried the suitcases to nearby fields, but they did not find any valuables in the luggage. The dacoits then returned to the car to find the occupants still asleep.

Using boulders, they smashed the windscreens and side window and assaulted the inmates, G Rajini, B Praveen, Santosh, Putta Srikanth and five others and looted their gold ornaments and other valuables. When the car driver attempted to chase them, they attacked him against and fled from the spot. This dacoity took place around 2.50 a.m on December 18 on the National Highway.

The busting of the dacoit gang was announced by IG G Satyanarayana along with the district SP R Giridhar in a press conference on Sunday.

Wanaparthy police

Interestingly, the dacoity took place on the busy NH-44 even as vehicles were whizzing past. The offenders, two of them driving two sugarcane-laden tractors parked them in the lay-by road and were waiting for their prospective victims. However, they could not strike two other cars as there were male passengers who were awake.

To their ill-luck, the victims’ car, an Ertiga regurning from Tirumala and Arunachalam and on its way to Jagitial, had stopped in the lay-by with the belief that the parked sugarcane-lade tractors could provide their some safety. The car passengers eased themselves outside and later slept in the car.

Initially, the two tractor drivers and their associates, who were waiting in the nearby fields stole the suitcases tied on roof of the Ertiga but could not find any valuables. They returned to find the occupants still asleep and attacked the car with granite stones found nearby.

They mercilessly assaulted the male members of the car and snatched all gold ornaments before fleeing from the place, Interestingly, the two tractor drivers, who were part of the gang, had returned to their vehicles innocuously and drove away.

When the case was reported, the Wanaparthy police were baffled as to the method in which the dacoity was conducted and focussed on the tractors that were parked in the lay-by road. With meticulous planning they tracked the offenders and arrested four of them, Badri Gajanan Pimpale of Tembhapuri, Sriram Shivaji Shinde of Parli, Sachin Santosh Shinde of Beed and Sayyad Feroj Mahetab of Beed in Maharashtra.

Two of their associates Santosh Panduran Kale and Sanjay Powar are still absconding.

Turkey's foreign minister meets Syria's de facto leader in Damascus

Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has met with Syria’s de facto leader Ahmed al-Sharaa – also known as Abu Mohammad al-Julani – to discuss support for the new administration in Damascus.

Photographs and footage shared by Turkey’s foreign ministry showed Fidan and Sharaa, who heads the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) militant group, walking ahead of a crowded delegation in Damascus before posing for photographs on Sunday.

A video released by the Turkish Anadolu state news agency showed the two men warmly greeting, shaking hands and hugging each other.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said on Friday that his top diplomat would be going to Damascus to discuss the new structure in Syria.

Erdogan himself is reportedly considering a visit to Syria. Turkey’s Chargé d’Affaires in Syria, Burhan Koroglu Koroglu mentioned that Erdogan’s visit might occur following Fidan’s trip to Damascus.

Turkey’s spy chief Ibrahim Kalin earlier visited the Syrian capital city on December 12, just a few days after Syria’s militant groups led by ousted Syria’s Bashar Assad after a lightning offensive.

Turkey has been a key backer of various militant groups opposing President Assad’s rule over the Arab country in recent years.

However, Fidan has rejected claims by US President-elect Donald Trump that the militants’ victory in Syria constituted an “unfriendly takeover” of the Arab country by Turkey.

Washington designated Sharaa a terrorist in 2013, saying al Qaeda in Iraq had tasked him with overthrowing Assad’s rule in Syria. But US officials said on Friday that Washington would remove a $10 million bounty on his head.

Sharaa’s group was part of al Qaeda and had been confined to Idlib for years until going on the offensive in late November, sweeping through the cities of western Syria and into Damascus as the army melted away.

HTS along with many other militant groups seized control of Damascus on Dec. 8, forcing Assad to leave his country.

Turkey wants HTS chief to disband Kurdish groups in Syria

On Saturday, Fidan said that Turkey would do “whatever it takes” to ensure its security if the new Syrian administration cannot address Ankara’s concerns about US-allied Kurdish groups it views as terrorist groups.

Hostilities have escalated since the fall of al-Assad less than two weeks ago, with Turkey and Syrian groups back seizing the city of Manbij from the US-allied Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) on Dec. 9.

Turkey regards the YPG, the militant group spearheading the SDF, as an extension of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) militants who have fought an insurgency against the Turkish state for 40 years and are deemed terrorists by Ankara.

Ankara, alongside allied militant groups, has mounted several cross-border offensives against the YPG-led SDF in northern Syria, while repeatedly demanding that its NATO ally Washington halt support for the fighters.

In a recent interview, Fidan said Ankara’s preferred option was for the new administration in Damascus to disband the YPG immediately.

“If it doesn’t happen, we have to protect our own national security,” he said. When asked if that included military action, Fidan said: “Whatever it takes.”

Syria has been gripped by foreign-sponsored militancy since March 2011.
