Ravi Shastri feels India justified in celebrating on avoiding follow-on in Brisbane

Ravi Shastri: Former India head coach Ravi Shastri believes the Rohit Sharma-led side was justified in celebrating on avoiding the follow-on during the rain-hit third Test against Australia in Brisbane, which led to the five-match series being locked at 1-1.

On Day Four of the match at the Gabba, Akash Deep sliced a Pat Cummins delivery over the gully for a boundary, which helped India avoid the follow-on, leading to jubilant celebrations in the dressing room by captain Rohit Sharma, head coach Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli.

While many in the Australian camp were surprised by it, Shastri felt there was nothing bad about it. “You should celebrate. It required a lot of character from the last pair with 35-36 runs needed. That celebration showed they knew the importance of that effort within the dressing room in the context of the series.” “It’s one thing following-on, it’s one thing then again being 2-3 down as opposed to, you going ahead and rattling the Australian top-order. It is fully justified,” said Shastri on the ICC Review show.

Talking about the scenes in Brisbane, Shastri recalled the 89-run partnership between Bumrah and Mohammed Shami at the Lord’s during the 2021 series against England, a match which India eventually won. He also highlighted the importance of lower-order bailing India out of tough situations.

“It reminded me of the celebration, in COVID times when Jasprit and Mohammed Shami were involved in a partnership at the Lord’s, which turned the game on its head. England were odds-on favourites on the final day to win the Test. And that partnership, I think of about 80 or 90, suddenly turned the game on its head, and by the end of the day, India had won the Test match.”

“When the tail-enders are stubborn, they fight it out there. It makes a massive difference. It did it on the last tour. When Ashwin and Hanuma Vihari batted the whole of the last session to save the game, going into the Gabba and then winning the series.”

With the five-match series tied at 1-1 ahead of the Boxing Day Test at the MCG, Shastri feels the fight shown by India in avoiding the follow-on at Brisbane will serve as a big boost to the visitors ahead of the crunch games.
“It’ll lift the Indian team. And for me, the series is on a level peg now and India might just be calling the shots. Massive. They would give anything for a 1-1 result. The first Test was in Perth, the second Testa day-nighter in Adelaide, and then the third Test was in Brisbane. Any overseas team will, you know, settle for a 1-1 score because come Melbourne, come Sydney, I think India will be powerful.”

“They’ve been kept in this series single-handedly by Jasprit Bumrah. If the big boys wake up, and step up to the plate, which I just get the gut feeling they will, then Australia have a problem on their hands. Yeah, they got out of jail but they are not on bail. They are free birds in Melbourne. They can do what they want and come and attack Australia on Boxing Day,” he concluded.

Russia has confidence in its weapons, senior diplomat says

Commenting on President Vladimir Putin’s remark about a potential duel between Russia’s Oreshnik missile system and US-made missile defenses, Ryabkov said: “The president made it all clear. We are confident in the power of our weapons and we know for sure that we can always rely on them to ensure national security.”

Ryabkov stressed that the recent developments had shown that the US policy of establishing a system of increasingly layered missile defenses was wrong. “It doesn’t enhance US security. In terms of cost effectiveness, this is not the best option, and even based on the most cautious estimates, this is not the best way to spend money. Perhaps, the US defense industry benefits from it but definitely not the American people,” the senior Russian diplomat noted.

During his annual combined press conference and Q&A session, Putin challenged all the Western experts who questioned the capability of Russia’s newest Oreshnik intermediate-range ballistic missile system. Putin suggested that the West choose a target in the Ukrainian capital of Kiev or any other location, amass missile defenses there, and check if it’s possible to intercept a hypersonic missile like that.

Elon Musk’s xAI raises $6 billion to expand AI capabilities

Elon Musk

New Delhi: Elon Musk‘s AI company called xAI has raised $6 billion, as it plans to expand its supercomputer to house at least one million graphics processing units (GPUs).

According to a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), investors gave a minimum of $77,593 per the filing. A Wall Street Journal report mentioned that Valor Equity Partners, Sequoia Capital, and Andreessen Horowitz were likely to contribute to the round, along with Qatar Investment Authority, Qatar’s sovereign wealth fund.

The new cash brings xAI’s total raised to $12 billion, adding to the $6 billion tranche xAI raised earlier this year.

In May this year, the AI company behind Grok raised $6 billion to accelerate the research and development of future technologies. The company said the funds from the Series B funding round will be used to take xAI’s first products to market and build advanced infrastructure.

“xAI is primarily focused on the development of advanced AI systems that are truthful, competent, and maximally beneficial for all of humanity. The company’s mission is to understand the true nature of the universe,” the company said in a blog post.

Earlier this year, xAI raised $500 million in commitments from investors toward a $1 billion goal. Founded in 2023, xAI unveiled its first AI product in November last year and recently announced the Grok-1.5 model with long context capability, as well as Grok-1.5V with image understanding.

Meanwhile, the tech billionaire has filed for a preliminary injunction against Sam Altman-run OpenAI for alleged anti-competitive behaviour. The motion for an injunction accuses OpenAI, its CEO Sam Altman, President Greg Brockman, Microsoft, LinkedIn co-founder and former OpenAI board member Reid Hoffman, and former OpenAI board member and Microsoft VP Dee Templeton of  ‘various illicit activities and seeks to halt them,’ according to reports.

The allegations also include converting OpenAI’s governance structure to a for-profit and ‘transferring any material assets, including intellectual property owned, held, or controlled by OpenAI, Inc., its subsidiaries, or affiliates.’

OpenAI said in a statement that “Elon’s fourth attempt, which again recycles the same baseless complaints, continues to be utterly without merit.” It had earlier called the lawsuit “blusterou and baseless. ”

Israeli air defenses fail to deter Yemeni attacks: Report

The YAF has launched over 200 ballistic missiles and 170 drones targeting occupied Palestine, presenting a severe challenge to the occupation entity’s defense systems, the Lebanese news outlet Al Mayadeen reported, citing the Israeli media.

The report indicated that the Israeli regime’s air defense systems, including the infamous Iron Dome, have struggled to effectively counter the large-scale threat posed by the YAF.

It also noted that the Arrow missile defense system— the Israeli regime’s primary line of defense against ballistic missiles—failed four consecutive times to intercept incoming missiles, three launched from Yemen and one from Lebanon.

It further emphasized that the Israeli military is grappling with significant challenges in both countering the Yemeni attacks and responding effectively.

The report indicated that since the beginning of the war on Gaza, the YAF’s attacks have caused considerable damage to the Israeli economy.

4,000-Year-Old Massacre In England: 37 Victims Were Slaughtered And Eaten

A 4,000-year-old massacre in southwestern England was linked to possible acts of cannibalism, new research has revealed. The remains of at least 37 individuals — men, women and children — were found in a 50-foot-deep shaft at Charterhouse Warren Farm, showing snapped femurs, bashed skulls, and slicing cuts. Researchers suggest the victims were slaughtered and possibly eaten in a ceremonial feast, with some bones bearing marks of human teeth.

The findings, published in the journal Antiquity, suggest the victims were slaughtered in a single, large-scale event between 2210 and 2010 BC. Discovered in 1970 at Charterhouse Warren Farm, near Bristol, the site had initially been dismissed as a typical Bronze Age burial. However, the new study reveals the remains belonged to victims who were likely captives or caught in a surprise attack. No evidence of weapons or defensive injuries was found.

Nearly half of the recovered skulls bear fatal injuries consistent with blows from wooden clubs. Tool marks on leg bones suggest flesh was stripped, and fractures on long bones point to marrow extraction — practices associated with cannibalism. The perpetrators also dumped butchered animal remains into the shaft alongside human bones, possibly as part of a ritual.

“It’s taken us all aback. It was completely unexpected, totally atypical for the period and for almost all of British prehistory,” said lead author Rick Schulting, archaeology professor at Oxford University.

The scale of the violence and its motivations remain unclear. Researchers believe that a cycle of escalating revenge killings between nearby communities may have triggered the massacre. Rick Schulting suggests that the killings may have been a warning or a form of dehumanisation of the victims. “There has been no [previous] indication of violence on this scale in Britain at that time, both regarding the number of victims and the way in which they were treated after death,” he said.

Unlike the relatively peaceful archaeological record of the British Chalcolithic and Early Bronze Age, where violent conflict was rare, Charterhouse Warren presents a unique case of mass violence and systematic postmortem processing. The disarticulated remains stand out against the typical burial practices of the period, where articulated skeletons or cremations dominated. Charterhouse Warren joins a handful of European prehistoric sites that document extreme violence and body processing.

RBI keeps interest rate unchanged for 11th time in a row, lowers GDP forecast to 6.6%-Telangana Today

Raises inflation target to 4.8 per cent from previous projection of 4.5 per cent for current fiscal

Mumbai: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Friday decided to keep the policy rate unchanged for the 11th time in a row, but sharply lowered the GDP growth forecast to 6.6 per cent for the current fiscal, as against earlier projection of 7.2 per cent.

The RBI maintained the status quo on interest rate despite the July-September quarter GDP growth falling to a seven-quarter low of 5.4 per cent, as against its own projection of 7 per cent.

The rate increase cycle was paused in April last year after six consecutive rate hikes, aggregating to 250 basis points since May 2022.

Announcing the fifth bi-monthly monetary policy for the current financial year, RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das said the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) has decided to keep the repo rate unchanged at 6.5 per cent while keeping policy stance unchanged at neutral.

He said the MPC will remain watchful of incoming macroeconomic data for future action.

The RBI sharply cut the GDP growth projection to 6.6 per cent from the earlier level of 7.2 per cent, while raising inflation target to 4.8 per cent from the previous projection of 4.5 per cent for the current fiscal.

In a bid to make available more money with banks for lending so as to boost economic activity, the RBI slashed Cash Reserve Ratio to 4 per cent from the existing 4.5 per cent. This would lead to the release of Rs 1.16 lakh crore to banks and improve their lending capacity.

The CRR is the percentage of a bank’s total deposits that it is required to maintain in liquid cash with the RBI.

The CRR percentage is determined by the RBI from time to time. Banks do not get any interest on this amount.

The government in October reconstituted the Reserve Bank’s rate-setting panel — Monetary Policy Committee (MPC). This was the second MPC meeting of the reconstituted panel with three newly appointed external members — Ram Singh, Saugata Bhattacharya and Nagesh Kumar.
