Mogadishu: Two boats capsized off the Madagascar coast in the Indian Ocean, leaving 24 people dead, Somalia’s government said on Sunday.

Somalia‘s Foreign Minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi said 46 people were rescued.

“We are working tirelessly to ensure the survivors are brought back home safely and provided with the necessary care,” he said.

Most of the passengers were young Somalis and their intended destination remains unclear. Many young Somalis embark every year on dangerous journeys in search of better opportunities abroad.

A delegation, led by the Somali Ambassador to Ethiopia, is scheduled to travel to Madagascar on Monday to investigate the incident and coordinate efforts to help survivors.

Fiqi also said on Sunday that Somalia’s Ambassador to Morocco will look into a separate report of Somali youth stranded on Morocco’s coastline. It is not clear when the Morocco incident took place and Fiqi did not provide details.

The UN migration agency has in the past raised concern over rising cases of irregular migration from the Horn of Africa countries as people flee from conflict and drought.

In April, 38 migrants died and 22 others were rescued from a shipwreck off Djibouti on a popular route to Yemen. Most of those rescued were of Somali and Ethiopian nationalities.

Musk lays off more employees from his social media platform X

San Francisco: Elon Musk, who is busy promoting Donald Trump for the keenly-watched US presidential election on November 5, has reportedly laid off more employees from his X social media platform.

According to a report in The Verge, a new wave of layoffs has hit X, primarily affecting its engineering department, citing sources inside X and posts on the workplace forum Blind.

“The exact scale of the job cuts remains unknown. These cuts come just two months after staffers were required to submit a one-page summary telling leadership their contributions to the company,” the report claimed.

Must or X were yet to comment on the report. Recently, the tech billionaire had reportedly sent an email to X staff about their much-anticipated stock grants — although with a catch. In an email to staff seen by The Verge, the social media platform planned to award stock options based on the anticipated impact of employees.

“That means staff have to submit a one-page summary telling leadership their contributions to the company in order to get their stock,” said the report. Keeping in mind how the company has continued to struggle under Musk’s ownership, employees have been bracing for more layoffs.

Musk bought X (then called Twitter) in 2022 and laid off more than 6,000 employees- roughly 80 per cent of the company’s staff. The workforce was forced to justify their roles and even judge whether their own colleagues should be retained. The job cuts affected departments like diversity and inclusion teams as well as product development and design.

Even, Twitter’s content moderation team was not spared. In January this year, X reportedly fired 1,000 employees from its ‘safety’ staff which was responsible for stopping abusive content online. Out of these 80 per cent were software engineers that were focused on ‘trust and safety issues’.

Cyclone Fengal Makes Landfall, Likely To Cross Tamil Nadu Coast In 3 Hours

Barricades blocking access to famous beaches were put up in Chennai.

Cyclone Fengal has started making landfall near the Puducherry coast and it likely take the storm to cross the coasts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry in the next three to four hours, said the weather office India Meteorological Department or IMD.

Here are the top 10 points in this big story:

  1. Heavy rain and gusty winds triggered by the storm preceded the landfall and disrupted flight and train services in Chennai. Several hospitals and houses were also flooded in the capital city.

  2. Schools and colleges in several districts in Tamil Nadu have been shut and hundreds of people moved inland to storm shelters ahead of a powerful cyclone storm set to hit the region on Saturday.

  3. In the neighbouring union territory Puducherry, people living in low-lying areas were evacuated and the administration sent SMS alerts cautioning residents to brace for the cyclone.

  4. Part of the Chennai airport was inundated and hundreds of passengers were impacted due to multiple flight cancellations. Operations at the airport will be suspended till 4 am on Sunday.

  5. As many as 20 flights were cancelled in Hyderabad as well which were services to and from Chennai and Tirupati.

  6. The heavy rain also impacted train services in Chennai with the Southern Railway announcing changes in services.

  7. Barricades blocking access to famous beaches, including the Marina and Mamallapuram, were put up in Chennai.

  8. In a rain-related incident, a migrant worker who tried to withdraw cash from an ATM in Chennai, was reportedly electrocuted.

  9. The forecast urged fishing crews to stay off the water and predicted surging waves of one metre (three feet) that posed a flood risk to low-lying coastal areas.

  10. Fengal skirted the coast of Sri Lanka earlier this week, killing at least 12 people including six children.

Jammu: Jammu and Kashmir Police said on Friday that with the arrest of two hybrid terrorists in Poonch district, the mystery behind multiple grenade attacks in the district during the last year has been solved.

Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Jammu range, Anand Jain said at a press conference that two terrorists have been arrested in the district from whose possession arms and ammunition were recovered.

“When interrogated, the two terrorists have revealed the links of a larger terror plot. You know for the last one year there have been grenade attacks at temples, hospitals, Gurdwaras, Army locations and other places and these terrorists have been responsible for all those attacks,” he said.

“In addition, they have confessed to having pasted anti-national posters at various places. The aim of this large conspiracy has been to disturb the peace and communal harmony in Poonch district…In the past, we have dealt with Pakistani terrorists, but both these two terrorists are locals. The arrest of these terrorists is a big success for the police, army and the CRPF as it targets the terrorist efforts to recruit local boys,” the ADGP said.

He said the investigation is on to find the funding links of these terrorists. He also said that the police have started an aggressive campaign against terrorists over-ground workers (OGWs) and sympathisers.

“We have arrested many OGWs. We are attaching the properties of OGWs and terror sympathisers. Our campaign against OGWs and helpers of terrorists has been continuing for long and we are going to increase our effort in this direction in the coming days. ”

A similar campaign is continuing in both Poonch and Rajouri districts at the moment, the officer added.

Speaking about the peaceful conduct of Budha Amarnath Temple Yatra (in Poonch) and the elections in the division, Anand Jain said, “It was the result of hard work and very close synergy and coordination between police, army and the security forces that made the peaceful conduct of the Yatra and the elections possible.”

Rythu Panduga held to threaten farmers, says Niranjan Reddy

In a statement issued on Saturday, Niranjan Reddy criticized the “Rythu Panduga” event held in Mahabubnagar district, claiming it seemed more like an attempt to intimidate farmers than a celebration. “The meeting appeared to be aimed at threatening the farmers of the State for not surrendering their lands in Kodangal, under the guise of a farmers’ festival. The Chief Minister’s tone suggested he might forcibly take the farmers’ lands,” he alleged.

Rythu Panduga held to threaten farmers, says Niranjan Reddy

Hyderabad: Former Minister and senior BRS leader S Niranjan Reddy alleged that the way Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy spoke about land acquisition for pharma village during the “Rythu Panduga”, it appears as if the event was organised to threaten the farmers.

In a statement issued here on Saturday, Niranjan Reddy said the intention behind organising “Rythu Panduga” in Mahabubnagar district appears to be more like threatening the farmers than celebrations. “It seems that this meeting was held to threaten the farmers of the State for not giving lands in Kodangal in the name of farmers’ festival. CM’s tone appeared as if he would snatch the lands of the farmers forcefully,”he alleged.

He accused the Congress government of misusing hundreds of crores in the name of Rythu Pandaga. “RTC buses were diverted and people were deprived of transport facilities. Devotees going to Srisailam during Karthika month suffered a lot due to shortage of buses,”he alleged.

Accusing Revanth Reddy of ignoring Palamuru-Rangareddy Lift Irrigation Scheme (PRLIS), the former Minister said though Revanth claims that he belongs to Mahabubnagar district, he did nothing to complete the project. If he was sincere about completing the project, Revanth would have completed it and provided water to the people of Mahabubnagar district, he said, adding that in the last one year, the Congress government had not taken up a single work related to the PRLIS project.
Stating that if Revanth Reddy was sincere, he would had completed 10 percent of the pending works of Palamuru Rangareddy lift irrigation works on a war footing and provided water to people, he said adding that Revanth admitted in the assembly that if the PRLIS works were completed an additional 10 lakh acres in the district would receive irrigation water.

“Congress is responsible for the backwardness of the Mahabubnagar district. During the party rule, the people of the district suffered a lot and people migrated to other places for livelihood. It was during the BRS rule that the district developed and migration stopped,”he said.

US approves $385 mln arms sale to Taiwan

The Pentagon’s Defense Security Cooperation Agency said the sale consisted of $320 million in spare parts and support for F-16 fighters and Active Electronically Scanned Array Radars and related equipment.

The State Department also approved the potential sale to Taiwan of improved mobile subscriber equipment and support for an estimated $65 million, the Pentagon said. The principal contractor for the $65 million sale is General Dynamics.

Taiwan’s defense ministry said it expected the sales to “take effect” within a month and that the equipment will help maintain the F-16 fleet’s readiness and “build up a credible defense force”.

“Taiwan and the United States will continue to strengthen their security partnership and work together to maintain peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and the Indo-Pacific region,” it said in a statement.

Last month, the United States announced a potential $2 billion arms sale package to Taiwan, including the delivery for the first time to the island of an advanced air defense missile system battle-tested in Ukraine.

BGT 2024-25: Virat Kohli hits 30th Test hundred as India set a target of 534 for Australia

Indian Cricketer Virat Kohli

Perth: Talismanic batter Virat Kohli smashed his 30th Test hundred  ‘and the first of this year’  as India set Australia a target of 534 runs to chase after declaring their second innings at 487/6 in 134.3 overs on Day Three of the first Test at Perth Stadium here on Sunday.

Kohli’s unbeaten century came off 143 balls and was laced with eight fours and two sixes. In front of a vociferous crowd which included his actor-producer wife Anushka Sharma, Kohli feasted on a tired bowling line-up to bring up his seventh Test hundred on Australian soil and draw level with Walter Hammond.

Kohli’s brilliant hundred was the perfect icing on the cake for India after opener Yashasvi Jaiswal put the visitors in the driver’s seat with a brilliant 161.

The final session began with Kohli getting a thick inside edge off Cummins going for four and was followed by taking three runs off him to get his fifty.

Despite Washington Sundar being castled while trying to sweep off Nathan Lyon, Kohli continued to be glorious in his driving and found good support in Nitish Kumar Reddy, who whipped Mitchell Marsh for a powerful six, before smashing him for a hat-trick of fours in the next over.

Kohli launched Lyon for a straight six over the non-striker’s end, before pulling and flat-batting Marnus Labuschagne for two boundaries. With Jasprit Bumrah removing his arm guard, a declaration looked imminent.

While Nitish muscled Labuschagne over long-on for a six, Kohli reverse-swept Lyon for four, before sweeping Labuschagne for four and getting his elusive century, also his 80th ton in international cricket as he walked off with cheers from the crowd chanting his name.

Brief scores: India 150 and 487/6 in 134.3 overs (Yashasvi Jaiswal 161, Virat Kohli 100 not out; Nathan Lyon 2-96) lead Australia 104 by 533 runs.
