Chennai: Normal life came to a halt as heavy rains, accompanied by gusty winds, lashed parts of northern Tamil Nadu on Saturday. Meanwhile, the cyclonic storm, Fengal, expected to make landfall near Puducherry later in the day, continued moving towards the coast.

What began as intermittent rainfall in coastal regions on the night of November 29, gradually became steady leading to water logging in several areas and many residents of low-lying Madipakkam parked their vehicles on both sides of nearby Velachery flyover.

Residents of similar vulnerable areas too parked their vehicles in safe areas. Roads were largely deserted and civic workers, police, and fire and rescue personnel were deployed in all vulnerable places.

Departure and arrival schedule of flights were affected to some extent. Chennai Metro Rail said its services were operational without any glitches and informed public of parking areas in specific stations that were prone to inundation. State-run transport corporations operated skeleton services in Chennai and nearby areas.

As the sea was pretty rough, police put up barricades blocking access to noted beaches including the Marina and Mamallapuram. State-run Aavin milk supply was not affected and power supply continued to be normal in most areas.

The government had already declared November 30 a holiday for educational institutions and requested IT firms to make their employees work from home.

Hyderabad: Two months on BRAOU staff protest against varsity land allocation still going strong

Hyderabad: Two months on BRAOU staff protest against varsity land allocation still going strong

Hyderabad: For over two months, the Dr. BR Ambedkar Open University (BRAOU), which otherwise used to be a serene campus in Jubilee Hills here, has become a site for protest.

Since the last 72 days, the teaching and non-teaching staff have been staging protests at the university administrative building demanding the Congress government revoke its order allotting BRAOU’s 10 acres of land to JNAFAU.

The State government on September 19 allocated BRAOU’ s 10 acres of land to Jawaharlal Nehru Architecture and Fine Arts University (JNAFAU) for expansion.

This move did not go down well with the BRAOU teaching and non-teaching staff who opposed the order stating that open university has already lost a large portion of its land and requires present land for varsity expansion.

Apart from university staff and alumni, even intellectuals, university former vice chancellors, academics, journalists and public representatives wanted order revocation.

According to BRAOU JAC comprising teaching and non-teaching staff, the University was established in 53 acres of land by the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh government.

Of the total land, five acres was allotted to T-SAT, four acres of land was utilised for cable bridge construction, while more than five acres was submerged in Durgam Cheruvu.

The JAC argues that the university, which now operates in 35 acres of land, needs expansion including establishment of multimedia, online education learning and skill development centres and to create better infrastructure for growing enrolments. It expressed apprehensions that allotting university’s land to another institution would not leave any scope for further expansion of the campus.

JAC general secretary Dr. Venugopal Reddy said the BRAOU was trying to provide coaching for international languages along with English language studies, and requires construction of special training centers and language laboratories for offering these courses, he said, adding that however there was no suitable university land available for construction of these proposed buildings.

The JAC would continue to protest till the government withdrew the land allocation order, said Maloth Buddha, member JAC.

Trump to slap 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico, 10% on China

US President-elect Donald Trump

Washington: US President-elect Donald Trump said he will impose a 25 per cent tariff on all products coming from Canada and Mexico, and 10 per cent on Chinese goods to check the flow of illegal immigrants and drugs into the United States.

In a series of posts on his Truth Social platform, Trump said he would sign executive orders imposing tariffs on the three countries as one of his first actions after assuming office on January 20.

“As everyone is aware, thousands of people are pouring through Mexico and Canada, bringing Crime and Drugs at levels never seen before. Right now, a Caravan coming from Mexico, composed of thousands of people, seems to be unstoppable in its quest to come through our currently Open Border,” Trump said.

“On January 20th, as one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% Tariff on ALL products coming into the United States, and its ridiculous Open Borders.

“This Tariff will remain in effect until such time as Drugs, in particular Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country! Both Mexico and Canada have the absolute right and power to easily solve this long simmering problem,” he said.

“We hereby demand that they use this power, and until such time that they do, it is time for them to pay a very big price,” Trump said. Further, the president-elect accused China of failing to stop the flow of drugs into the US.

“I have had many talks with China about the massive amounts of drugs, in particular Fentanyl, being sent into the United States – But to no avail,” Trump said. “Representatives of China told me that they would institute their maximum penalty, that of death, for any drug dealers caught doing this but, unfortunately, they never followed through, and drugs are pouring into our Country, mostly through Mexico, at levels never seen before,” he alleged.

“Until such time as they stop, we will be charging China an additional 10% Tariff, above any additional Tariffs, on all of their many products coming into the United States of America,” he added. Trump said the executive order to this effect would be signed on the first day of his presidency on January 20, 2025.

India on verge of crushing victory over Australia, hosts struggle at 104-5

Perth: India is on the cusp of victory as Mohammed Siraj bowled a couple of incisive morning spells to remove the seasoned Usman Khawaja and out-of-form Steven Smith as Australia gasped to 104 for five at lunch on day four of the first Test against India.

Chasing a near impossible target of 534, Australia, who resumed on 12 for three, were reduced to 17 for 4 when Khawaja’s mistimed pull off Mohammed Siraj (3/34 in 10 overs) was well taken by IPL’s three million dollar man Rishabh Pant running backwards.

But then India’s new nemesis Travis Head (63 batting, 72 balls) started counter-punching in the presence of Smith (17), who was trying his best to dig in with desperation to come out of his current rut. However Siraj, who had poor series against New Zealand at home, was all over the Australian batters on a pitch that has ‘misbehaved’ considerably with variable bounce coming into play.

If Khawaja was disposed with a delivery that got big on the southpaw opener, Smith got a delivery that was pitched on perfect length and deviated enough to kiss his outside edge as Pant completed the formalities diving to his right ending a 62-run stand. Smith and Marnus Labuschagne’s dip in form during this World Test Championship cycle is a major cause of concerns for the hosts.

Smith, in fact, did away with his trigger movement towards the off-stump. knowing fully well that he could be a leg before candidate whenever Indian bowlers attack the stumps on a pitch with variable bounce. Head, who got a beauty from Harshit Rana in the first innings, knew that survival wasn’t an option on a deteriorating track and he didn’t let the loose balls go unpunished as anything pitched up was driven and the short ones were cut disdainfully. His fifty came with a perfect ramp over the keeper’s head and needed only 63 balls to achieve that feat.

Supreme Court orders liquidation of Jet Airways

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday ordered liquidation of cash-strapped Jet Airways, saying that the resolution plan, approved five years ago, is no longer capable of implementation.

A Bench, headed by CJI D.Y. Chandrachud, allowed the lenders’ plea against the transfer of ownership of the grounded airline to Jalan Kalrock Consortium (JKC).

The Bench, also comprising Justices J.B. Pardiwala and Manoj, invoked its extraordinary powers under Article 142 of the Constitution “for doing complete justice” between the parties and ordered the appointment of a liquidator forthwith.

Further, it ordered the forfeiture of Rs 200 crore infused by the JKC and directed lenders to invoke Rs 150 crore Performance Bank Guarantee (PBG).

In the plea filed before the apex court, the Committee of Creditors (CoC), led by the State Bank of India, has said that the proposed revival plan was not in the best interest of lenders and questioned the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) order upholding the resolution plan.

In January this year, the Supreme Court ordered JKC, the successful resolution professional bidder for the cash-strapped airline, to deposit Rs 150 crore in an escrow account jointly held by the State Bank of India and JKC.

It had cautioned that legal consequences would follow if the JKC failed to furnish the bank guarantee.

It had also asked the NCLAT to decide by the end of March 2024 on the lenders’ plea challenging the ownership of the grounded Airways to JKC.

The consortium had undertaken an infusion of Rs 350 crore equity per the court-approved resolution plan to assume ownership of Jet Airways.

A three-member Bench of the NCLAT had agreed to an adjustment of Rs 150 crore from the PBG towards the payment of Rs 350 crore.

The appellate tribunal had also accepted an undertaking given by the consortium committing to pay Rs 100 crore by August 31 last year and another Rs 100 crore by September 30, 2023.

Due to severe financial distress, Jet Airways, once one of India’s largest and most popular airlines, entered the corporate insolvency resolution process under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) in June 2019.

FM Araghchi warns West of debate in Iran on changing nuclear doctrine

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has warned about an ongoing debate in Iran over whether to change the nuclear doctrine in the face of the West’s continued sanctions on the Islamic Republic.

Last week, the EU and the UK announced fresh sanctions against Iran after a censure motion brought by Britain, France, Germany and the US was passed at the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Board of Governors.

In response, Iran began injecting uranium gas into several thousand advanced centrifuges, making good on its promise if the West did not choose “the path of engagement and instead pursue confrontation and issue a resolution”.

Speaking in Lisbon before a meeting between Iranian and European negotiators in Geneva on Friday, Araghchi said IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi had promised to prevent the censure motion after Iran proposed limiting its uranium enrichment to 60 percent purity and allowing four nuclear inspectors to visit its nuclear sites.

Grossi “failed because the Europeans had decided on the course of confrontation,” he told reporters.

Iran subsequently “decided to introduce thousands of new, highly advanced machines into the system. And now they have started to feed them with gas. So this is the result of their pressure”, he added.

Araghchi reiterated that Iran has remained within the confines of the nuclear non-proliferation treaty, however, and still seeks cooperation.

“We have no intention to go further than 60 percent for the time being, and this is our determination right now. I would like to re-emphasize that we have chosen the line of cooperation in order to come to a dignified resolution of this problem,” he stressed.

However, Araghchi said, Iran’s engagement with the West on its nuclear program was not guaranteed.

“There is a debate right now in Iran that it was perhaps a wrong policy. Why? Because it proved we did whatever they wanted and when it was their turn to lift sanctions, in practice, they didn’t happen,” he said. “So maybe something is wrong with our policy.”

Araghchi stressed that Iran has already acquired the capability and knowledge to develop nuclear weapons, but they are not part of its security strategy.

“So I can tell you, quite frankly, that there is this debate going on in Iran, and mostly among the elites – even among the ordinary people – whether we should change this policy or not, whether we should change our nuclear doctrine, as some say, or not, because it has proved insufficient in practice,” he said.

Araghchi noted that if European countries were to reimpose sanctions on Iran through the UN Security Council, it would convince everyone in Iran that Tehran’s current doctrine had been mistaken.

He then wondered what the purpose was of Iran spending 10 to 12 years on negotiations, implementation, and fulfilling its obligations if it was only to be ultimately placed back under Chapter Seven of the UN Charter.

“If that happens, I think everybody will be convinced that we have gone in the wrong direction, so we have to change direction. So I think if the snapback happens we would have a crisis,” Araghchi added.

For now, only Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei could revoke the fatwa prohibiting the possession of nuclear weapons, Araghchi said, stressing that “nuclear weapons have no place in our security calculations.”

Iran had already warned that any resolution against its peaceful nuclear program would be met with a quick response.

In 2015, Iran proved the peaceful nature of its nuclear program to the world by signing the JCPOA with six world powers.

However, Washington’s unilateral withdrawal in 2018 and its subsequent re-imposition of sanctions against Tehran left the future of the deal in limbo.

In 2019, Iran started to roll back the limits it had accepted under the JCPOA after the other parties failed to live up to their commitments.
