Further investigation is underway, say cops (Representational)

Erode:

A 50-year-old headload worker was shot dead by a landowner at Gobichettipalayam on Friday midnight, police said.

Vijay (26), an engineering graduate, was travelling with his father Kannan, 50, a headload worker, and his brother Murthy on a moped, according to police.

They were on their way to a hospital for Kannan’s treatment when the moped ran out of fuel near Nagarpalayam, about a kilometer from Gobichettipalayam. Vijay left his father and brother to refuel the moped at a nearby outlet, police said.

Upon returning, he found both had vanished and immediately called Murthy, who returned to the location, police added.

At around 12.15 am, Murthy arrived, and the brothers began searching for their father. They found Kannan standing on private land owned by Janakiraman, where Mohanlal, the owner’s son, was also present. As they approached there, Mohanlal shot Kannan twice with a gun, police said quoting Vijay.

Kannan collapsed and died due to gunshot wounds in his chest and stomach, police added.

Gobichettipalayam police arrived, found Kannan’s body with an aruval (sickle) in his hand, and detained Mohanlal, who was holding the weapon.

On Saturday morning, Kannan’s relatives staged a roadblock near Modachur weekly market, demanding Mohanlal’s arrest. Police are interrogating Mohanlal at the Gobichettipalayam station and probing the motive behind the murder.

Iran, Russia FMs discuss Syrian developments by phone

In a telephone conversation, Abbas Araqchi and Sergey Lavrov vowed their countries’ firm support for the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria, including the country’s government and army in confronting terrorist groups amid the recent developments.

They considered it necessary to pursue the issue within the framework of the Astana Process (Astana Format) and the need for coordination between Iran, Russia, and Turkey as the three guarantors of the process.

Recalling the duty of the international community in confronting the terrorism, the Iranian foreign minister considered the recent movements of terrorist groups in Syria as part of the Zionist regime’s and the US’s plot to destabilize the West Asian region, emphasizing the need for greater vigilance and coordination between Iran, Russia, and regional countries, especially Syria’s neighbors, to neutralize the dangerous conspiracy and confront the actions of terrorists in Syria and the region.

Israeli strike on south Lebanon wounds three people, including child: Health Ministry

The Lebanese Health Ministry says an Israeli strike on a village in southern Lebanon has left at least three people injured, including a child, despite a ceasefire agreement between the occupying regime and Hezbollah.

The ministry said in a statement on Saturday that the Israeli raid targeted a vehicle in the village of Majdal  Zoun, “wounding three people, including a seven-year-old child.”

The latest development comes as the Israeli military continues to violate the truce since it went into effect on Wednesday, conducting fresh attacks on Lebanon.

According to the al-Akhbar news outlet, Israeli artillery shelling struck the al-Khiam plain in southern Lebanon on Saturday.

Israeli military vehicles were also seen patrolling the town of Deir Mimas following the ceasefire, while an Israeli warplane was spotted flying over the Iqlim al-Tuffah region.

Israeli forces also besieged a family in their home in the border village of Aitaroun after they advanced toward the eastern outskirts of the town.

Meanwhile, the Lebanese official National News Agency (NNA) reported that the Israeli military violated the truce agreement seven more times on Friday, mostly in the Marjayoun district of the southern governorate of Nabatieh and the Tyre district.

The Israeli military also shelled the outskirts of the southern towns of Markaba, Talloussa, Odaisseh, Taybeh and Houla, NNA said, adding that an Israeli tank also fired shells at a home in Tal Nahas on the outskirts of the town of Kfar Kila, narrowly missing the homeowner who had just entered the house.

Also in the strategic town of Khiam, the regime forces reportedly opened fire on people in a funeral procession, after the military sent four tanks into the western part of the town.

Israel was forced to accept a ceasefire with Hezbollah after suffering heavy losses following more than 14 months of fighting and failing to achieve its goals in its aggression on Lebanon.

The truce agreement, brokered by the United States and France, came into effect before dawn on Wednesday. It will last for 60 days in the hope of reaching a permanent cessation of hostilities.

At least 3,961 people were killed and 16,520 others injured in Israeli attacks on Lebanon.

Mohammed Shami joins Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs 10 Cr in IPL 2025 auction deal

Jeddah: India senior pacer Mohammed Shami has been bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs 10 crore in the IPL 2025 Auction here at the Abadi Al Johar Arena in Jeddah on Sunday.

Hyderabad, who earlier expressed interest in buying Rishabh Pant and Arshdeep Singh, finally got the first buy of the day after acquiring the services of Shami in the first pick of the second marquee set.

Shami, who was part of the Gujarat Titans squad, missed the last season due to knee surgery. He recently made his return to competitive cricket earlier this month for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy. He is expected to join the Indian team in Australia for the latter stage of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Before the auction, Hyderabad retained Pat Cummins, Abhishek Sharma, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Heinrich Klaasen and Travis Head.

Lucknow Super Giants, on the other hand, bought South African batter David Miller for Rs 7.5 crore. After the big-ticket purchase of Rishabh Pant for an unprecedented Rs 27 crore, Miller became the second buy of the day in Jeddah.

Lucknow retained Nicholas Pooran, Ravi Bishnoi, Mayank Yadav, Mohsin Khan and Ayush Badoni ahead of the auction.

Crude prices fall on possible ceasefire in Lebanon

Brent and US crude futures fell on Tuesday as fears of supply disruptions from the conflict between Israel and Iran eased after Iranian-backed Hezbollah signaled support for a ceasefire proposal put forth by Lebanon’s government.

Brent crude futures were down $3.70, or 4.57%, to $77.23 a barrel at 11:21 a.m. CDT (1621 GMT). US West Texas Intermediate futures were down $3.57, or 4.63%, at $73.57 a barrel.

The drop, which began slowly on fears of reduced Chinese demand, snowballed after Hezbollah signaled support for a ceasefire and Israel expanded its ground war in Lebanon instead of attacking Iran’s oil infrastructure.

“That Hezbollah is open to a ceasefire, that is the kind of headline that people jump on,” said Phil Flynn, senior analyst at Price Futures Group. “There should be a lot of volatility up and down on this.”

On Monday, Brent rose above $80 per barrel for the first time since August after more than a 3% day-on-day gain. That followed the largest weekly gain in over a year, roughly 8%, in the week to Friday on rising concerns of a spreading war in the Middle East.

Hezbollah left the door open on Tuesday to a negotiated ceasefire with Israel after Israeli forces raised the stakes in the conflict with its Iran-backed enemy by making new incursions in the south of Lebanon.

The oil price rally began after Iran launched a missile barrage at Israel on October 1. Israel has sworn to retaliate and said it was weighing its options, with Iran’s oil facilities considered a possible target.

Some analysts said an attack on Iranian oil infrastructure was unlikely and warned oil prices could face considerable downward pressure if Israel focuses on any other target.

“… for now the threats of Israeli assaults on Iranian oil infrastructure have not materialized,” said PVM analyst Tamas Varga.

In the United States, Hurricane Milton intensified into a Category 5 storm on its way to Florida after forcing at least one oil and gas platform in the Gulf of Mexico to shut on Monday.

Traders also will be looking out for the latest US crude oil inventory data, with analysts expecting stocks to rise by 1.9 million barrels in the week ended October 4, according to a preliminary Reuters poll.

The American Petroleum Institute is due to post its tally of US stockpiles at 2030 GMT on Tuesday, followed by official data from the Energy Information Administration on Wednesday.

BJP Announces Swearing-In Date As Maharashtra Deadlock Continues

BJP Announces Swearing-In Date As Maharashtra Deadlock Continues

The oath-taking ceremony of the new Maharashtra cabinet has been announced by the BJP, but there’s no word yet on who will occupy the Chief Minister’s post. The ceremony will take place at 5 pm on December 5 at Mumbai’s iconic Azad Maidan.

The event will be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, said BJP Maharashtra chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule while making the announcement.

Six days into the declaration of the poll results, the BJP has not yet called a meeting of its MLAs-elect nor appointed the party’s legislature party leader.

Eknath Shinde, the caretaker Chief Minister, is at his native village in Satara district. He has taken ill, said an aide amid buzz that he was not happy with the way the new government was shaping up.

With 132 seats in the 288-member house, the BJP emerged the single largest party in the state when the results were announced on November 23. Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) – the other members of the Mahayuti alliance – won 57 and 41 seats, respectively. The Mahayuti seat count stands at 230. The majority mark is 145.

The Congress, the BJP’s national rival, won just 16 seats, adding Maharashtra to its anthology of electoral losses in the recent times. Uddhav Thackeray-led Sena faction won 20 seats and Sharad Pawar’s party, the other NCP faction, won 10 seats. The two parties, along with the Congress, form the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance. The Opposition combine’s seat total is at a paltry 46 seats.

Hectic discussions have been on, both in Delhi and Mumbai, but there’s still no clarity who will be the face of the new coalition government.

Earlier this week, Eknath Shinde, the outgoing Chief Minister, said he would not be an “obstacle” and go by the decision of the BJP Central leadership regarding the top post. This effectively clears the way for Devendra Fadnavis, who has been Chief Minister twice and was deputy Chief Minister in the last Eknath Shinde-led government, the front-runner in the race.

Ajit Pawar’s party has already stated that Mr Fadnavis was acceptable to it as Chief Minister.

Devendra Fadnavis will be chosen as the next Chief Minister, Union Minister and Republican Party of India-Athawale (RPI-A) chief Ramdas Athawale, a BJP ally, had claimed this week, adding to the buzz around the leader.

Hyderabad: Winning laurels and ranked as the 8th best police station in India, the Shahalibanda police station is located in the southern side of the city.

With a staff strength of nearly 60 including the Station House Officer and sub inspectors, the police station jurisdiction is spread around 3 km radius. Considered as one of the communal sensitive police stations owing to its previous record of communal skirmishes, the police station takes care of the security of roughly 1.5 lakh population.

A police station’s performance is rated based on 40 parameters, including infrastructure and approachability, performance, ACB traps and suspensions, law and order situations, registering FIRs, filing charge sheets SC&ST Act, narcotics, etc.. Also, uploading data on CCTNS, disposal of old cases, passport verification, preventive actions and others criteria.

As part of the exercise, two months ago, a team of the Ministry of Home Affairs had visited the police station and physically inspected the premises.

S Ravi Kumar, SHO Shahalibanda police station, is quite happy over the achievement. “It is great moment for me and the entire staff. We will continue to work hard and strive to reach the first position,” said the SHO.

The police station was located in an old building previously and about a year ago, it was shifted to a new spacious building at Aliabad.

Additional DCP (south) Shaik Jahangir, who was the ACP Falaknuma, when the building construction work was started, recalled that a lot of efforts went in starting the works and then ensuring it was completed. “The police station infrastructure is one of the factors taken into consideration for the award,” he said.

Beirut: Israeli airstrikes on southern and eastern Lebanon killed at least 36 people and injured 17 others injured, according to media reports.

The strikes on the eastern Lebanese governorate of Baalbek-Hermel killed 11 people, including eight in a residential apartment in the village of Nabi Chit and three others in Hermel, the official National News Agency ( NNA) reported on Monday.

Meanwhile, Israeli airstrikes on southern Lebanon killed 25 people, including nine in the village of Maarakeh, three in the village of Ain Baal, two in the town of Ghazieh, 10 in the Tyre district, and one in the village of Yohmor, the NNA reported, adding that the airstrikes also injured 17 people in Tyre.

On Monday, Hezbollah targeted Shraga Base, the administrative headquarters of the Golani Brigade Command, north of the occupied city of Acre, with a barrage of rockets, the NNA reported.

Hezbollah also hit Israeli forces in two moshavim in northern Israel, and in the Malkiyeh settlement, the report said, adding that Hezbollah targeted an Israeli force sheltering in a house in Al-Bayada during its withdrawal, destroying the structure and inflicting multiple casualties among the force, Xinhua news agency reported.

On Monday, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) on social media platform X condemned constant strikes on the Lebanese Armed Forces as “a flagrant violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701 and international humanitarian law, which limits the use of violence against those not participating in hostilities”.

UNIFIL also urged all parties involved in the conflict to address their differences through negotiations instead of violence. The Lebanese army said the Israeli military has been repeatedly targeting its soldiers recently. In the latest attack on Sunday, an Israeli airstrike targeted a Lebanese army post in the Ameriya axis on the Qlaileh-Tyre road in southwestern Lebanon, killing one soldier and injuring 18 others.

Since September 23, the Israeli army has intensified its air attack on Lebanon in an escalation of conflict with Hezbollah. Israel further initiated a ground operation across its northern border into Lebanon in early October.
