BRS observes Deeksha Diwas across Telangana

Hyderabad: Commemorating the historic hunger strike led by party president and former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao in 2009, the BRS observed Deeksha Diwas across the State on Friday. The indefinite hunger strike played a pivotal role in the formation of the separate State of Telangana.

The BRS cadre organised two-wheeler rallies, distributed fruits, held blood donation camps and ‘annadanam’ for the poor, besides various other charity events across all 33 districts of Telangana. They paid floral tributes at the statues of Telangana Thalli at the BRS party offices and paid homage to Telangana martyrs.

While BRS working president KT Rama Rao participated in the Deeksha Diwas programme at Karimnagar and later at Telangana Bhavan in Hyderabad, senior leaders including T Harish Rao, G Jagadish Reddy, P Sabitha Reddy, Satyavathi Rathod, Vemula Prashanth Reddy, S Niranjan Reddy, Talasani Srinivas Yadav, T Padma Rao Goud and others took part in the events organised in their respective districts.

It was on November 29, 2009 that Chandrashekhar Rao launched an indefinite hunger strike as part of his efforts to achieve Telangana State. However, the police arrested him at Alugunoor near Karimnagar while he was moving towards Siddipet and shifted him to Khammam prison and later to the NIMS hospital in Hyderabad where he continued his hunger strike. As his condition deteriorated after 11 days, the then UPA government announced on December 9 that the process for creation of Telangana State has begun, thus marking a historic moment. To mark the occasion, the BRS has been celebrating November 9 as Deeksha Diwas.

Recalling the event, BRS working president KT Rama Rao said November 9 is the day Telangana became a certainty when a Do or Die battle erupted. He remembered that Chandrashekhar Rao sat on a fast unto death for Telangana statehood on this day, 15 years ago and his steely resolve created a formidable compulsion for the political establishment of the nation.

“Telangana was not given, it was won by the people’s movement under the able leadership of Chandrashekhar Rao after a protracted struggle against Congress. Thank you KCR sir for your leadership that inspires us everyday and will continue to do so for many generations to come,” he said.

Former Minister and senior BRS MLA T Harish Rao said Chandrashekhar Rao launched his indefinite hunger strike on this day 15 years ago, for the supreme cause of the Statehood movement. He said with the interests of Telangana and its people as paramount, the BRS supremo made Telangana State possible with his sincerity and commitment. “Telangana is the result of Chandrashekhar Rao’s commitment, sacrifices and leadership,” he added.

Meanwhile, the BRS leaders were outraged after the local bodies authorities removed the party flags and banners, ahead of the Deeksha Diwas at Mancherial, Mulugu, Mahabubnagar, Asifabad, Warangal, Khammam and several other parts of the State. They entered into heated arguments with the local officials, questioning about the presence of the Congress party flags and banners in the respective areas for the last few days. Later, the officials allowed presence of BRS flags and banners for the day.

Perth: Seam-bowling all-rounders Nitish Kumar Reddy and Harshit Rana made debut for India as stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah won the toss and elected to bat first against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy opener at the Perth Stadium on Friday.

India won the last two Test series played in Australia by identical 2-1 margins in 2018-19 and 2020-21, respectively. They have also been trophy holders since 2016-17. Ravichandran Ashwin and Virat Kohli presented Harshit and Nitish with their maiden Test caps.

Apart from Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj completing the four-man pace attack, India have also sprung in a surprise by selecting Washington as their lone spinner ahead of stalwarts like Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja. “We know what to expect, the wicket gets quicker after the first session. We’re pretty confident. For our batters and team (the WACA practice), it was a great experience. We played a Test here in 2018 so we know what to expect,” said Bumrah.

The visitors will have Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul as openers, with Devdutt Padikkal slotted at number three in the absence of the injured Shubman Gill. At the same time, regular skipper Rohit Sharma is due to link up with the team on November 24, after he stayed back home for the birth of his second child. The BCCI said Gill was not considered for selection for the first Test due to a left thumb injury sustained on Day Two of match simulation at the WACA, adding that its medical team is monitoring his progress on a daily basis.

On the other hand, Australia have handed a debut to batter Nathan McSweeney, who got his Test cap from former player Darren Lehmann. He becomes the 467th player to play Tests for Australia.

Playing XIs: India: Yashasvi Jaiswal, K.L. Rahul, Devdutt Padikkal, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant (wk), Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Jasprit Bumrah (c), Harshit Rana and Mohammed Siraj

Australia: Nathan McSweeney, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Mitch Marsh, Alex Carey (wk), Pat Cummins (c), Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon and Josh Hazlewood.

"Completely Fine": Pak Minister On Man Pushed From Container

Islamabad:

Pakistan’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar on Saturday said that the man seen in a viral video falling from a container during a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protest in Islamabad is “completely fine.”

Speaking to the media, Tarar said that the man sustained minor injuries in the incident, as reported by Dawn.

The viral video, shot during a protest at Islamabad’s D-Chowk, shows men, dressed as security personnel with riot gear, pushing a man off a stack of three shipping containers.

The PTI supporters were demanding the release of their leader and party chief, Imran Khan.

The protests turned violent on November 26, and PTI supporters were met with intense tear gas shelling by security forces.

According to Dawn, a photographer captured a picture showing a man hanging off the edge of a container while men in uniform stood above him.

A video of the incident also went viral, sparking various claims on social media, with some posts alleging that the man had died.

Refuting these claims, Minister Tarar said, “Propaganda was spread that a person offering prayers was killed by being pushed down. He is a resident of Mandi Bahauddin and is completely fine. His video has emerged; he sustained an arm injury and has bandages.”

Tarar further claimed that the man was recording a TikTok video as part of a challenge with a friend and was not offering prayers at the time, as reported by Dawn.

Earlier, Awami National Party (ANP) President Aimal Wali Khan called for a ban on political parties that incite violence, including PTI, Dawn reported.

Speaking at a press conference alongside Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi at the ANP central secretariat in Wali Bagh on Friday, Khan said that PTI has been working in an undemocratic and nonpolitical manner since its formation and it has always encouraged people to behave in a violent manner.

He labelled PTI as “waste that should be disposed of” and said that the state had imposed PTI on Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for the past 12 years but such decisions did not give good results, as reported by Dawn report.

Kothagudem: Hamali worker’s daughter secures three Govt jobs, aims to crack Civils

Kothagudem: Hailing from a remote village in Kothagudem district, a young woman has secured three government jobs and she achieved the feat without attending any coaching classes.

The woman, Bogi Sammakka of Dammapet mandal headquarters in the district comes from a family with a humble background. Her father Bogi Satyam is a hamali worker in Telangana Girijan Cooperative Corporation Limited and her mother Bogi Ramana is an Anganwadi teacher.

She got selected as an English junior lecturer on November 21 and as a junior assistant (Group IV) November 14 on this year after clearing the tests conducted by the Telangana State Public Service Commission (TGPSC).

She was also selected as a civil police constable last October and completed her training as well. Incidentally the junior assistant job secured was in Telangana Girijan Cooperative Corporation Limited in which her father works as a hamali.

Speaking to Telangana Today Sammakka said she intends to serve as junior lecturer and her ultimate aim is to become an IAS officer to serve the country. She did her schooling in a local ZPHS and did her post graduation in English from Osmania University.

After completing her PG she came back to Dammapet and moved to her grandmother’s home where she set up a separate reading room for preparation. She said she started preparing for the tests in 2021; spending on an average 10 hours on preparation, which includes preparing notes.

Generally everyone thinks that attending coaching classes is a must to crack competitive exams. But, with proper planning; right study material and a certain level of dedication one could crack the exams with ease, Sammakka stated.

She said she used civil services study material for preparing for the TGPSC and other tests. Sammakka said she would start preparing for civil services exams soon after joining as junior lecturer, for which posting orders are yet to be issued.

After Gaetz’s withdrawal, Trump picks Pam Bondi as next US Attorney General

As Florida’s first woman Attorney General, Pam Bondi worked to stop trafficking of deadly drugs, reducing tragedy of Fentanyl overdose deaths, says President-elect

Washington: Hours after his initial pick Matt Gaetz withdrew his name for Attorney General amid controversy over alleged sexual misconduct, President-elect Donald Trump selected former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi as his nominee for the post.

Former Congressman Gaetz on Thursday announced his decision to withdraw from the nomination process for the post.

“I am proud to announce former Attorney General of the Great State of Florida, Pam Bondi, as our next Attorney General of the United States,” Trump said in a statement.

He noted that Bondi served as a prosecutor for nearly 20 years, during which she was “very tough on violent criminals, and made the streets safe for Florida families”.

“Then, as Florida’s first female Attorney General, she worked to stop the trafficking of deadly drugs and reduce the tragedy of Fentanyl overdose deaths, which have destroyed many families across our country,” he said.

Trump praised Bondi for doing an “incredible” job. He alleged that the Department of Justice (DOJ) had been weaponised against him and other Republicans. “Not anymore,” said the President-elect.

“Pam will refocus the DOJ on its intended purpose of fighting crime and Making America Safe Again. I have known Pam for many years — She is smart and tough, and is an AMERICA FIRST Fighter, who will do a terrific job as Attorney General!” Trump said.

Earlier in the day, Gaetz withdrew himself from the nomination after facing backlash from both the opposition and his own Republican Party Senators. He made the surprising announcement a day after he met with Senators on Capitol Hill.

“I had excellent meetings with Senators. I appreciate their thoughtful feedback — and the incredible support of so many. While the momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work of the Trump/Vance Transition,” he said.

“There is no time to waste on a needlessly protracted Washington scuffle, thus I’ll be withdrawing my name from consideration to serve as Attorney General. Trump’s DOJ must be in place and ready on Day 1,” Gaetz wrote in a post on social media.

Gaetz said he remains fully committed to seeing that Trump is the most successful President in history. “I will forever be honoured that President Trump nominated me to lead the Department of Justice and I’m certain he will Save America,” he said.

Trump accepted Gaetz’s decision to withdraw. “I greatly appreciate the recent efforts of Matt Gaetz in seeking approval to be Attorney General. He was doing very well but, at the same time, did not want to be a distraction for the Administration, for which he has much respect,” he said.

“Matt has a wonderful future, and I look forward to watching all of the great things he will do!” Trump added.

New Delhi: In a first-of-its-kind move, the IPL has announced the dates for the next three seasons. The 2025 season is set to run from March 14 to May 25, followed by the 2026 season from March 15 to May 31, and the 2027 season from March 14 to May 30.

In an email to franchises on Thursday, accessed by ESPN cricinfo, the IPL referred to these as “windows,” though they are likely to become the final dates.

The 2025 season will feature 74 matches, consistent with the previous three editions. However, this is ten fewer than the 84 matches outlined in the IPL’s 2022 media rights document for the 2023-27 cycle.

The tender for the media rights had projected varying match counts across seasons: 74 matches each in 2023 and 2024, 84 matches in 2025 and 2026, and up to 94 games in 2027, the final year of the rights cycle.

The report further added that overseas players from most Full Member nations have received approval from their respective boards to participate in the tournament over the next three years.

However, this does not apply to Pakistan, whose players have been absent from the IPL since the inaugural season in 2008 due to ongoing political tensions between the two countries.

Ahead of the IPL 2025, 574 players set to be featured in the mega auction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on November 24 and 25. Out of the 574 Players, 366 are Indian and 208 are overseas, including 3 players from associate nations.

The auction will include 318 Indian uncapped players and 12 uncapped overseas players. 204 slots will be up for grabs with 70 available slots for overseas players. Rs 2 crore is the highest reserve price with 81 players opting to be in the highest bracket.

Hyundai India’s record IPO to debut on stock market this week

New Delhi/Seoul: The Indian subsidiary of South Korean automotive giant Hyundai Motor is set to make its stock market debut this week following a record initial public offering (IPO), according to industry officials on Monday.

Shares of Hyundai Motor India are set to start trading on the Indian stock market on Tuesday, following last week’s $3.3 billion IPO subscription process.

It marks Hyundai Motor’s first listing outside South Korea and the largest IPO in the history of the Indian stock market, surpassing the previous record set by the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) in 2022, which then raised $2.5 billion.

The IPO price band has been fixed at Rs 1,865-Rs 1,960 per share. The IPO is a pure offer for sale (OFS) and the entire proceeds will go to the promoter.

India serves as a key global production base for the Korean automotive giant. Last year, Hyundai produced 765,000 vehicles in India, reports Yonhap news agency.

Hyundai Motor India is the second-biggest carmaker in India, following Japan’s Maruti Suzuki. Industry observers are keen on whether the company can enhance its local competitiveness through the listing on the Indian stock market.

The South Korean automotive giant has made aggressive investments in India in recent years.

Last year, Hyundai acquired General Motors’ manufacturing plant in India’s western city of Pune. The company is currently upgrading the facility with a smart manufacturing system, aiming to achieve a production capacity of over 200,000 units annually.

Once the Pune plant becomes operational in the second half of next year, Hyundai Motor India will have a combined annual production capacity of 1 million units when leveraging both the Chennai and Pune plants.

Additionally, Hyundai Motor plans to expand the number of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in India to 485 by 2030.

Together with affiliate Kia Corp., Hyundai Motor has entered into a strategic partnership with Indian battery giant Exide Energy this year.

Hyundai plans to introduce the Creta EV, which is the electric version of the company’s first India-specific Creta SUV, in 2025. The model will be the first EV produced locally at the Chennai plant.

The company plans to introduce five EV models in the Indian market by 2030 to meet the growing demand for EVs in the country.

"Tipu Sultan Is Actually A Very Complex Figure In History": S Jaishankar

'Tipu Sultan Is Actually A Very Complex Figure In History': S Jaishankar

“History, in all societies, is complicated,” said S Jaishankar at the book launch,

New Delhi:

External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar on Saturday attended the launch of Indian historian Vikram Sampath’s book ‘Tipu Sultan: The Saga of the Mysore Interregnum’ at the Indian Habitat Centre here in Delhi. S Jaishankar described Tipu Sultan as a “very complex figure in history,” highlighting both his resistance to British colonial control and the controversial aspects of his rule.

Speaking at the event, S Jaishankar said, “Tipu Sultan is actually a very, very complex figure in history. On the one hand, he has the reputation as a key figure who resisted the British colonial control over India, and it is a fact that his defeat and death can be considered a turning point when it came to the fate of peninsular India.”

However, S Jaishankar also noted the “adverse” effects of Tipu Sultan’s rule in the Mysore region. “At the same time, he evokes strong adverse sentiments even today in many regions, some in Mysore itself,” he added.

S Jaishankar further emphasized that Indian history has focused more on Tipu Sultan’s battles with the British, and “underplaying” or “neglecting” other aspects of his rule. “Contemporary history writing, certainly at the national level, has focused largely on the former, and underplaying, if not neglecting the later. Let’s be honest, this was not an accident,” he said.

Asserting that History is complicated, S Jaishankar said that “cherry-picking of facts” in the case of Tipu Sultan has led to the advancement of a “political narrative”.

“History, in all societies, is complicated, and politics indulges in cherry-picking the facts. This has happened in the case of Tipu Sultan. By highlighting the Tipu-English binary, to the exclusion of a more complicated reality, a particular narrative has been advanced over the years,” he said.

S Jaishankar reaffirmed that under PM Modi’s government, India has seen the emergence of alternative perspectives.

“In the last 10 years, the changes in our political dispensation have led to the emergence of alternative perspectives. We are no longer prisoners of a vote bank, nor it is politically incorrect to bring out inconvenient truth,” he added.

Speaking further about the book, S Jaishankar said, “As someone from the diplomatic world, I was really struck by info and insights which are provided in this volume on Tipu Sultan. We in India have tendered to mainly study post-independence foreign policy — perhaps this too was a conscious choice. But the fact is that many of our kingdoms and states forayed into international affairs in previous centuries in pursuance of thier particular interests, and some, by the way, continued to do so even till independence. The interaction of Tipu’s missionary with their French and English counterparts is really fascinating.”

S Jaishankar concluded by saying that open-minded scholarship and genuine debate are central to India’s evolution as a pluralistic society and vibrant democracy.
