Iran slams Israeli scheme to build synagogue within Al-Aqsa Mosque

Iran has condemned in the strongest terms remarks by an Israeli minister regarding a plan to construct a synagogue inside the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in the occupied East al-Quds.

In a statement on Tuesday, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kana’ani slammed Israel’s Itamar Ben-Gvir, who announced the plan a day earlier.

The Al-Aqsa Mosque is Islam’s third holiest site and a symbol of Palestinian identity.

“The cabinet of the criminal Zionist regime is determined to carry out its sinister agenda regarding the Al-Aqsa Mosque to the extent that it shamelessly declares its malevolent intention to build a synagogue within the Al-Aqsa Mosque,” Kana’ani stated in a post on X.

It was the first time for the Israeli minister to openly speak about building a synagogue inside the complex, strengthening the narrative that the Muslim holy site and Palestinian national symbol is under threat from the occupying regime.

“If I could do anything I wanted, I would put an Israeli flag on the site,” Ben-Gvir said in an interview with Israel’s Army Radio. When asked by the interviewer whether he would build a synagogue within the site if it were up to him, he replied: “Yes.”

Ben-Gvir has repeatedly visited the Al-Aqsa Mosque complex, despite a longstanding ban on Jews praying at the site.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran, while strongly condemning such statements and schemes, warns against any infringement on the sacred boundaries of the Al-Aqsa Mosque and new provocations by the Zionists crossing the red lines of the Islamic Ummah,” Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman underscored.

Various countries and international organizations also reacted to the remarks by the Israeli minister.

The United Nations cautioned that his statement risks escalating the already tense situation.

Jordan vowed to pursue international legal measures to protect the holy site, while Qatar urged the international community to take immediate action

“In light of the awakening of pure human conscience and global hatred against crimes committed by Zionists, today Muslims and freedom-loving people around the world are united in their call to support Palestine and the Al-Aqsa Mosque and to prosecute the criminal Zionists,” Kana’ani stated.

Chennai: Tamil Nadu BJP state spokesperson A. N. S. Prasad has moved the Madras High Court against the Formula 4 car racing event scheduled for August 31 and September 1 in Chennai.

The petitioner wanted the case to be heard urgently on Tuesday but the case will be heard on August 28. The BJP leader in his petition stated that Formula 4 car racing would lead to a road blockade, causing inconvenience to the general public.

He also charged that illegal road works are also being carried out, inconveniencing daily commuters and patients visiting Chennai General Hospital and Chennai Multispecialty Hospital.

The petitioner said that he seeks to halt the car racing event, citing the “illegal nature” of the event and its impact on the public. Tamil Nadu Youth Welfare and Sports Development Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin had said that the Formula 4-night street race would not cause any hindrances to commuters.

Udhayanidhi, while speaking to media persons a few days before, said that arrangements had been made for 8,000 people to watch the race. The minister said that people can watch the session on Saturday morning which is for free.

The DMK government has spent around Rs 30 crore for the event. Eight teams will participate in the event and the track will have 19 turns, multiple chicanes, and tricky elevations.

Opposing the state government’s plans to host the event, the AIADMK blamed the ruling DMK government for “misgovernance”. AIADMK general secretary and the Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly Edappadi Palaniswami (EPS) said public funds should benefit people and not be used for entertainment under the guise of a sporting event. EPS in a statement said,

“There are so many problems that people are facing today, and in such a scenario this DMK government is conducting a car race.” He said, “The race would cut through the heart of the city for 3.5 km around Island Grounds near the Marina beach.”

The opposition leader charged that the circuit was near hospitals and would affect transport immensely in the city. However, the state government argued that they have an agreement with the private organisers of the event to share the revenue generated similar to the process followed in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Iraq shoots down Turkish drone over northern city of Kirkuk

Iraqi military officials say the country’s air defense units intercepted and shot down a Turkish unmanned aerial vehicle flying in the skies over the northern oil-rich city of Kirkuk.

Brigadier General Abdul Salam, deputy commander of the Iraqi air defense, told reporters Thursday that the drone came from the direction of Sulaymaniyah and crossed into Iraqi airspace.

He said it was a Turkish drone that was shot down by the Iraqi Air Force in the Chiman area of Kirkuk.

The Iraqi Air Force said in a statement that the drone was issued a warning “according to protocol” and then shot down by air defenses. It said the drone fell on a civilian house, causing “only material losses.”

“Based on the inspection of the wreckage parts of the drone, it was found to be of the Turkish type,” it said.

Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman Oncu Keceli said Turkish and Iraqi authorities were in “coordination” to shed light on the incident, and reiterated Turkey’s determination to “fight against terrorism.”

In a statement posted on the social media platform X, Keceli stressed cooperation between Turkey and Iraq against “terrorism,” including Iraq’s decision to list the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) militant group as a banned organization.

“Both countries are determined for this cooperation to yield concrete results on the field and for the coordination between the competent authorities to be increased,” Keceli wrote.

Turkey often launches ground and aerial strikes against what it calls PKK positions in northern Iraq. Baghdad has, on several occasions, summoned Ankara’s envoy to protest the operation.

The Kurdish militant group has long been fighting inside Turkey for autonomy.

Turkish ground and air forces frequently carry out operations against PKK hideouts inside the country as well as in northern Iraq and neighboring Syria.

More than 40,000 people have been killed during the three-decade conflict between Turkey and the militant group.

Sebi bans Anil Ambani from securities market, slaps Rs 25 cr penalty-Telangana Today

Also bars 24 other entities, including former key officials of Reliance Home Finance for five years for diversion of funds from company

Sebi bans Anil Ambani from securities market, slaps Rs 25 cr penalty

Industrialist Anil Ambani

New Delhi: Markets regulator Sebi has barred industrialist Anil Ambani, 24 other entities, including former key officials of Reliance Home Finance from the securities market for five years for diversion of funds from the company.

Sebi has imposed a penalty of Rs 25 crore on Ambani and restrained him from being associated with the securities market including as a director or Key Managerial Personnel (KMP) in any listed company, or any intermediary registered with the market regulator, for a period of 5 years.

Also, the regulator barred Reliance Home Finance from the securities market for six months and slapped a fine of Rs 6 lakh on it. In its 222-page final order, Sebi found that Anil Ambani, with the help of RHFL’s key managerial personnel, had orchestrated a fraudulent scheme to siphon-off funds from RHFL by disguising them as loans to entities linked to him.

Although the Board of Directors of RHFL issued strong directives to stop such lending practices and reviewed corporate loans regularly, the company’s management ignored these orders. This suggests a significant failure of governance, driven by certain key managerial personnel under the influence of Anil Ambani. Given these circumstances, the company RHFL itself should not be held equally responsible as the individuals involved in the fraud.

Further, the remaining entities have played the role of being either recipients of illegally obtained loans or conduits to enable illegal diversion of monies from RHFL, the regulator noted.

Sebi said its findings have established the “existence of a fraudulent scheme, orchestrated by Noticee No. 2 (Anil Ambani) and administered by the KMPs of RHFL, to siphon off funds from the public listed company (RHFL) by structuring them as ‘loans’ to credit unworthy conduit borrowers, and in turn, to onward borrowers, all of whom have been found to be ‘promoter linked entities’ i.e. entities associated/ linked with Noticee 2 (Anil Ambani)”.

Ambani used his position as ‘chairperson of the ADA group’ and his significant indirect shareholding in the holding company of RHFL to orchestrate the fraud. Sebi, in its order on Thursday, noted the cavalier approach of the company’s management and promoter in approving loans worth hundreds of crores to companies that had little to no assets, cash flow, net worth, or revenue.

This suggests a sinister objective behind the ‘loans’. The situation becomes even more suspicious when considering that many of these borrowers were closely linked to the promoters of RHFL. Eventually, most of these borrowers failed to repay their loans, causing RHFL to default on its own debt obligations.

This led to the company’s resolution under the RBI Framework, leaving its public shareholders in a difficult position. For example, in March 2018, RHFL’s share price was around Rs 59.60. By March 2020, as the extent of the fraud became clear and the company was drained of its resources, the share price had plummeted to just Rs 0.75.

Even now, over 9 lakh shareholders remain invested in RHFL, facing significant losses. The 24 restrained entities include former key officials of Reliance Home Finance Ltd (RHFL) — Amit Bapna, Ravindra Sudhalkar and Pinkesh R Shah — and Sebi has imposed fine on them for their role in the case.

Also, the regulator levied a fine of Rs 25 crore on Ambani, Rs 27 crore on Bapna, Rs 26 crore on Sudhalkar and Rs 21 crore on Shah. Additionally, the remaining entities including Reliance Unicorn Enterprises, Reliance Exchange next Lt, Reliance Commercial Finance Ltd, Reliance Cleangen Ltd, Reliance Business Broadcast News Holdings Ltd and Reliance Big Entertainment Private Ltd have been imposed a penalty of Rs 25 crore each.

These fines have been levied on them for either receiving the illegally obtained loans or acted as intermediaries to facilitate the illegal diversion of funds from RHFL. In February 2022, markets watchdog Sebi had passed an interim order and restrained Reliance Home Finance Ltd, industrialist Anil Ambani and three other individuals (Amit Bapna, Ravindra Sudhakar and Pinkesh R Shah) from the securities market till further orders for allegedly siphoning off funds from the company.
