New Delhi: The Indian economy experienced a notable upswing across various economic indicators in July 2024, signalling strong and resilient business activities with both the manufacturing and services sectors posting a robust performance, according to the Finance Ministry’s monthly review released on Thursday.

“The month saw impressive milestones being reached, substantial growth in GST collections, and a significant rise in e-way bill generation, which points to an overall increase in economic activity. The stock market indices also reached record highs in July,” the report states.

On balance, India’s economic momentum remains intact. Despite a somewhat erratic monsoon, reservoirs have been replenished. Manufacturing and services sectors are expanding, going by the Purchasing Managers’ indices.

Tax collections, especially indirect taxes, which reflect transactions, are growing healthily, and so is bank credit, according to the review.

Inflation is moderating, and exports of both goods and services are doing better than they did last year. Stock markets are holding on to their levels. Foreign direct investment is looking up as gross inflows are rising, the review states. Gross GST collections for July 2024 maintained their momentum, achieving their second-highest level since May 2023.

The total gross GST revenue rose by 10.3 per cent year-on-year (YoY), bringing the total for FY 25 (April to July) to Rs 7.4 lakh crore.

This increase in GST collections also highlights robust compliance and expansion of GST coverage across various economic activities.

The upward level shift is reflected in the average monthly GST collections rising from Rs 1.68 lakh crore in FY24 to Rs 1.85 lakh crore in FY25. The year-on-year increase in e-way bills reached a nine-month peak of 19.2 per cent with the total number of e-way bills issued in July surging to 10.5 crore, setting a new single-month record.

According to the review, the manufacturing sector has continued to demonstrate robust performance in the first four months of FY25, as evidenced by the strong performance of various high-frequency indicators.

The Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) Manufacturing, a crucial gauge of the economic vitality of the manufacturing sector, stood at 58.1 in July 2024, significantly above the series long-run average and among the highest recorded in recent years.

This expansion, driven by buoyant demand conditions and a surge in production volumes, bodes well for the overall health of the economy. Similarly, the service sector continued to perform well.

PMI services remained in an expansionary zone at 60.3 in July 2024, driven by expansion in international sales, an increase in new order uptakes, and a rise in new export orders.

Despite a rise in wages and material costs which pushed up business expenses, overall sentiment in the services sector remains upbeat, driven, among others, by an upswing in the tourism cum hotel industry induced by leisure travel, business travel, and social events, the Finance Ministry said.

Chandigarh:

Punjab Police in a joint operation with central agencies have busted a Pakistan-backed arms smuggling module with the arrest of two operatives from Tarn Taran, Director General of Police (DGP), Gaurav Yadav, said on Thursday.

“The operation led to the recovery of four sophisticated Glock-19 pistols, including one with ‘Made for NATO Army’ imprinted on it, along with four magazines and seven cartridges, besides Rs 4.8 lakh hawala money,” the DGP said, adding that police teams have also impounded a Maruti Swift car in which the accused were travelling.

The arrested duo has been identified as Harpreet Singh and Lovepreet Singh. Both have criminal history with cases pertaining to the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS) registered against them.

DGP Yadav said Harpreet Singh had links with a Pakistan-based smuggler, who used to influx drugs and weapon consignments from across the border using drones.

Further investigations are underway to establish backward and forward linkages in this case, he added.

Sharing more details, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Tarn Taran, Gaurav Toora told the media that the police were carrying out checking of suspected vehicles near Sheron in Taran Taran when a Maruti Swift car being driven rashly was signalled to stop. The occupants tried to flee but rammed the vehicle into the barricade at the check-post.

The two persons in the car were rounded up and weapons and hawala money were recovered upon their search, the SSP said.

He also said that preliminary investigations have revealed that Harpreet had developed some contacts when he was lodged in Faridkot Jail, who got him in touch with the Pakistan-based drug smuggler.

The probe has also revealed that Harpreet had delivered multiple weapon consignments to criminal elements, the SSP said, adding that further investigation is on and more arrests are expected to be made in this case.

Los Angeles: The US has reported more than 50 illnesses and eight deaths in Listeria outbreak, according to the latest data released by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Listeria is a hardy germ that can remain on surfaces, like meat slicers, and foods, even at refrigerated temperatures, Xinhua news agency reported on Wednesday.

It can also take up to 10 weeks for some people to have symptoms of listeriosis, according to CDC.

Epidemiologic, laboratory, and traceback data show that meats sliced at delis, including Boar’s Head brand liverwurst, are contaminated with Listeria and are making people sick, according to CDC.

Listeria spreads easily among deli equipment, surfaces, hands, and food.

A total of 57 people have been hospitalised due to Listeria infections in the country, and eight deaths have now been reported, according to CDC.

This is the largest listeriosis outbreak since the 2011 outbreak linked to cantaloupe.

The CDC requested the public not to eat recalled deli products.

People who are at higher risk of getting sick with Listeria, such as those who are pregnant, are aged 65 or older, or have a weakened immune system, are suggested to avoid eating meats sliced at deli counters, unless heated until steaming hot just before serving.

The new deaths include two in South Carolina and one each in Florida, Tennessee and New Mexico. Illinois, New Jersey and Virginia have also reported deaths in the outbreak, which genetic testing has linked to liverwurst products manufactured by Boar’s Head.

Boar’s Head has recalled more than 7 million pounds of 71 different meat and poultry products as of July 30, according to the US Department of Agriculture.

Kolkata: Kolkata is set to witness a series of rallies and demonstrations on Thursday to protest against the alleged rape and murder of a doctor with political parties and several civil society organisations planning to hit the streets during the day.

Despite attempts by police to “stop BJP’s movements”, the party would go ahead with its protest programme in Esplanade area in central Kolkata on Thursday, Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar said.

The BJP demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for “sustained efforts to divert the probe and shield the main perpetrators” in the alleged rape and murder of the postgraduate trainee doctor, Majumdar, the party’s state unit president, said.

Senior BJP leader and party’s West Bengal co-incharge Amit Malviya on Wednesday said, “Despite Calcutta High Court’s explicit order, Kolkata Police is not allowing @BJP4Bengal to erect stage for tomorrow’s dharna at Dorina Crossing, Dharmatala. The protest will happen at the designated place as per schedule, but Mamata Banerjee and Kolkata CP will have much to answer.”

Pradesh Congress Committee president and former MP Adhir Choudhury will be at the forefront of a rally by the party from College Square to Shyambazar in the northern part of the city to press the demand for justice for the deceased woman doctor.

An organisation ‘Pather Davi’ will take out a rally of rights activists, students and professionals from different fields to protest against atrocities on women. “From Manipur to Hathras, from Unnao to Kamduni and R G Kar, we will demand for justice for all the rape victims in one voice,” Aditi Roy, one of the organisers, said.

The rally will begin at College Square in the northern part of the city and culminate in Esplanade area. These rallies were planned in the wake of the ‘Nabanna Abhijan‘ on August 27 to protest against the alleged murder of the doctor and a 12-hour bandh called by the BJP the next day.

Meanwhile, the ceasework by junior doctors at state-run hospitals in West Bengal entered its 21st day on Thursday as they rejected Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s appeal to join duty. “We will carry on our protest until the main perpetrators of the heinous crime are arrested,” an agitating doctor said.

The agitating medics also demanded elections in colleges, participation of junior doctors and students in all decision-making committees of the medical facilities and security measures at workplaces.

Addressing a rally organised by Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad on Wednesday, Banerjee said, “I have remained sympathetic towards the cause of the doctors from the very beginning since they were seeking justice for their colleague. We did not take any action against them although so many days have passed since the incident. We understand your pain. But please come back to work now since patients are suffering.”

On August 9, the police recovered the body of the woman’s postgraduate trainee doctor from the seminar hall of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Irish FM, EU's Borrell call for sanctioning Israeli ministers

At a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels, Ireland’s foreign minister said that the Israeli regime deliberately targets civilians as well as Hamas forces with the military campaign it launched almost 11 months ago.

“This is a war against Palestinians not just against Hamas. The level of civilian casualties and dead is unconscionable,” Micheal Martin told reporters, according to media outlets. “It’s a war on the population. No point in trying to fudge this.”

Israel’s offensive in Gaza has killed over 40,000 people, according to local health officials, displaced 90% of the population and destroyed its main cities.

Martin said a legal opinion issued by the International Court of Justice that Israel’s occupation of Gaza and the West Bank is unlawful obliges the EU to take action. The Palestinians have hailed it as “a watershed moment for Palestine, for justice and for international law.”

“It cannot be business as usual,” Martin told reporters. “It is very clear to us that international humanitarian law has been broken.”

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, with the backing of Ireland, urged the ministers to consider imposing sanctions on certain members of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing cabinet over their remarks about the war in Gaza.

“Some Israeli ministers have been launching hateful messages, unacceptable hateful messages, against the Palestinians and proposing things that go clearly against international law and is an (incitement) to commit more crimes,” Borrell said.

Borrell did not name the ministers, but earlier this month he criticized Israel’s Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich for suggesting that the starvation of Gaza’s population of more than 2 million people “might be just and moral” until hostages captured in the Oct. 7 attack are returned home.

Borrell said there should be “no taboos” to prevent the EU from ensuring that international humanitarian law is respected.

Rupee appreciates 5 paise to 83.88 against USD on Friday morning-Telangana Today

Forex traders noted that the recent drop in oil prices, now around USD 77 per barrel, is a major boost for the rupee due to India’s high oil import costs. In the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened at 83.93, strengthened to 83.88, marking a 5 paise increase from its previous close.

Rupee appreciates 5 paise to 83.88 against USD on Friday morning

Mumbai: Rupee traded in a narrow range and appreciated 5 paise to 83.88 against the US dollar in morning trade on Friday, supported by easing crude oil prices and fresh foreign fund inflows.

Forex traders said significant correction in oil prices, which is hovering around USD 77 per barrel, is a major positive for the rupee, given India’s substantial oil imports.

At the interbank foreign exchange market, the local unit opened at 83.93 and then gained ground and touched 83.88, registering a rise of 5 paise from its previous close.

On Thursday, the rupee traded in a narrow range and settled lower by 3 paise at 83.93 against the American currency.

“Despite the dollar index reaching a recent low, the Indian rupee remains steadfast, showing little signs of strengthening. This resilience can be attributed to the central bank’s deliberate interventions, aimed at stabilizing the USDINR around the 83.90-95 range,” CR Forex Advisors MD-Amit Pabari said.

Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, was down 0.15 per cent to 101.35 points.

Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, was 0.12 per cent up at USD 77.31 per barrel in futures trade, “In the near term, the rupee is expected to trade within a narrow range, with an upside limit around 83.80 and support around 84.00,” Pabari added.

The domestic equity market witnessed heavy volatility in morning trade, the 30-share BSE Sensex which opened on a positive note was later trading 13.2 points, or 0.02 per cent down, at 81,039.99 points.

The Nifty also witnessed similar movement, it opened on a higher note, but soon pared the gains to trade 8.25 points, or 0.03 per cent lower at 24,803.25 points.

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net buyers in the capital markets on Thursday as they purchased shares worth Rs 1,371.79 crore, according to exchange data.

On the domestic macroeconomic front, the minutes of the last Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) released by the RBI on Thursday noted that the calibrated increase in policy repo rate by 250 basis points since May 2022 and subsequent change of stance to the withdrawal of accommodation have facilitated gradual disinflation over 2022-23.

According to Reserve Bank Governor Shaktikanta Das, the current policy rate of 6.5 per cent is broadly balanced, and any justification for policy easing at this juncture can be misleading.

Revanth misled Rahul Gandhi also on loan waiver : Harish Rao

BRS MLA Harish Rao

Hyderabad: Stating that Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy of making misleading claims about the implementation of the crop loan waiver, BRS leader and former Minister T Harish Rao said it had caused confusion and frustration among the public and the farmers.

In an informal chat with media persons at Telangana Bhavan, he said on Thursday that Revanth Reddy had misled even Congress leader Rahul Gandhi with his claims over the fulfilment of the debt relief promise made by the Congress party.

He offered to receive Rahul Gandhi on his visit to the State and show him the ground reality as far as the waiver was concerned in the Chief Minister’s native village of Kondareddypalli.

He emphasized that the Chief Minister’s statements had not matched the actual disbursement figures, leading to trust deficit and lack of transparency.

The way the Chief Minister sought to handle the loan waiver issue created a considerable amount of confusion and the farmers viewed it as a case of betrayal.

Referring to the Chief Minister’s revelations during a chit chat with media persons recently, Harish Rao termed it as “cheat chat” stating that his conversations involved more of deceit and falsehoods than any facts.

He recalled that Revanth Reddy had announced during casual discussion with the media the decision to hand over the responsibility of collecting electricity dues in Hyderabad’s Old City to the Adani Group.

However, as it sparked a controversy and backlash from the BRS, he ruled out any such move on the floor of the State assembly.
