US Open: Djokovic advances to third round after Djere retires

New York: 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic advanced to the US Open third round when his compatriot Laslo Djere retired early in the third set. The second seed led 6-4, 6-4, 2-0 before the retirement under the roof of Arthur Ashe Stadium.

By advancing, Djokovic became the first male player to record 90 wins at all four majors. He is eight victories shy of tying Jimmy Connors for most US Open match wins.

The first set alone took a full hour. Djokovic prevailed, 6-4, by winning every point on Djere’s serve in the 10th game.

The first game of the second set was another battle. It took 16 minutes and included four deuces as the stifling humidity took its toll. Djokovic slipped on the court a few times, including once on his braced right knee, the one that suffered a torn meniscus at the French Open back in May. But the Serb held serve despite his fifth double fault of the match.

In the third game, Djere broke the four-time US Open champion to take a 2-1 lead. Djere was soon up 4-2, and seemed nearly certain to take the set. Djokovic rallied, however, and won the next two games to tie at 4-4 nearly two hours into the match. The mood changed significantly when Djokovic went up 4-5 and called the physio and took a tablet. Both players were visibly gasping for air at times following lengthy rallies in the humid conditions. Djere took a medical time out to relieve pain in his lower left abdominal area.

When both men returned to the court, Djere attempted to hold serve to save the set, but he sent a forehand long on set point, putting Djokovic up 6-4, 6-4.

In the third set, Djokovic held serve for a 1-0 lead. In the next game, Djere lost every point on his own serve, crossed the net post, and retired after two hours, 16 minutes of play.

Djokovic will face Australia’s Alexei Popyrin in Round 3. The 24-time major winner has beaten Popyrin all three times they’ve faced each other, including at two Slams in 2024 (Wimbledon and the Australian Open).

FM: Unlike Israel, Iran after de-escalation of tensions in region

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says Iran is after disposal of tensions in the West Asia region, while the Israeli regime has been contributing to intensification of regional tensions.

The top diplomat made the remarks in a telephone conversation with his Dutch counterpart Caspar Veldkamp on Wednesday.

“The Islamic Republic is after de-escalation of tensions in the West Asia region,” Araghchi said, adding, “This is while the Zionist regime’s killing and violence machine has contributed to escalation of tension and violence in the region.”

The official was referring to the regime’s October-present war against the Gaza Strip, Tel Aviv’s intensified deadly attacks on Lebanon and the occupied West Bank, and its assassination of senior resistance figures across the region.

He laid emphasis on the need for immediate cessation of the war that has so far claimed the lives of 40,534 Palestinians, mostly women and children.

For his part, the Dutch official expressed concern regarding the spiraling crises throughout the region, urging all concerned parties to exercise restraint.

“The Netherlands hopes that the cycle of violence and tension is stopped across the region, and the ground is prepared for cessation of the Palestinian people’s suffering and transfer of humanitarian aid to them,” he said.

The officials, meanwhile, addressed various issues of common interest. They underlined the need for continuation of political consultations, with Araghchi saying it was possible for the countries to expand their relations on the basis on mutual respect.

In a separate telephone conversation with his Japanese counterpart Yoko Kamikawa, Araghchi likewise described the Israeli regime’s “provocative measures” as the “main reason behind intensification of regional tensions.”

He cited the regime’s assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas’ Political Bureau chief, in the Iranian capital Tehran late last month, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s “approach of [trying to] expand the war [on Gaza]” as cases in point.

“As we have stated repeatedly, we are not afraid of [potential] increase in regional tensions, but, unlike the Zionist regime, the Islamic Republic is not after expansion of tension and conflict in the region,” he said.

Kamikawa, for her part, voiced concern regarding the dangerous regional situation that has followed Haniyeh’s assassination, underscoring the need for restoration of calm.

She, meanwhile, said Tokyo was inclined to expand its mutual relations with Tehran and continue regional cooperation with the Islamic Republic.

Araghchi also stressed the need for continuation of negotiations and consultations between the countries towards further promotion of both their relations and regional cooperation.

He noted that the country’s foreign policy under its current administration featured endeavor towards development of relations with the entire world, especially the East Asian nations.

The Dutch and Japanese officials also congratulated Araghchi for his recent appointment as Iran’s top diplomat, for which he expressed his gratitude.

Tulkarm Brigade commander killed in fierce clashes with Israeli forces

The commander of a Palestinian resistance group affiliated with Saraya al-Quds, the military wing of the Gaza-based Islamic Jihad movement, has been killed in a heavy exchange of fire with the Israeli regime’s forces in the occupied West Bank.

Palestinian media reports said on Thursday that Muhammad Samer Jaber, the commander of the Tulkarm Brigade, and four other resistance fighters had been killed during the occupation’s aggression on the Nour Shams refugee camp in the east of the occupied West Bank city of Tulkarm.

Reports said Jaber, known by his nom de guerre Abu Shujaa, was killed around 4:00 a.m. when the Israeli occupation army surrounded a building in the Tulkarm camp, where he and several other Palestinian fighters were located.

Following fierce clashes, Abu Shujaa and four others were killed by a missile while the Israeli occupation army captured another Palestinian fighter in the building.

The Israeli military said one of its soldiers was injured during the confrontation at the Nour Shams refugee camp.

The 26-year-old leader of the Tulkarm Brigade had for years been the target of assassination by the Israeli occupation.

The Israeli military invaded the Tulkarm refugee camp in April and carried out one of its deadliest offensives in years, which resulted in the killing of 14 Palestinians and the wounding of many more.

At the time, after rumors spread that Abu Shujaa was killed, the young man appeared at the mass funeral of his colleagues, brandishing his automatic rifle and delivering an emotive speech about the continuation of the resistance.

Israel had been seeking to arrest him or kill him ever since, especially as the Tulkarm Brigade has emerged as one of the strongest of the fighting groups that are resisting the Israeli occupation of the West Bank.

Violence by settlers and raids by Israeli forces have surged across the occupied West Bank since Israel launched its barbaric military campaign in the besieged Gaza Strip in October last year.

According to medical sources, the aggression has so far resulted in the killing of 18 citizens in Jenin, Tulkarm, and Tubas, while more than 30 others were injured, bringing the death toll since October 7, 2023 to 667.

Gaza-based resistance groups commend Abu Shujaa

The Islamic Jihad movement said in a statement that Abu Shujaa was one of the founders of the Tulkarem Brigade and praised the “heroic confrontation” of the commander and his companions with the occupation soldiers.

“Our Palestinian people knew the leader Abu Shujaa for his steadfastness and courage, a fighter who decided to confront the occupation bravely with his brothers, to lift the injustice imposed on their people, realizing that confronting the enemy, whatever the price, is much easier than living under a criminal occupation that kills children, violates sanctities, humiliates dignity, executes people in the streets, confiscates property, plans day and night to steal land and displace its people, arrests children, besieges hospitals, commits massacres and wages a war of genocide,” the statement said.

Stressing that Abu Shujaa’s martyrdom “increases our people’s steadfastness, resilience, and determination,” the Islamic Jihad said, “The enemy is trying in vain to eradicate our resistance in the West Bank, and we will thwart all its attempts.”

The statement added, “The martyrdom of a leader will be succeeded by a thousand leaders… and victory belongs to our people and our resistance.”

The Palestinian resistance movement Hamas also mourned the assassination of Abu Shujaa and his comrades, saying, “We affirm that the continuation of the occupation’s aggression on the West Bank will not break our people and resistance.”

“We emphasize that the crimes of the occupation will ignite the ground with flames under the feet of its terrified army and settler gangs, and will erupt the volcano of anger simmering in the West Bank due to the ongoing practices and arrogance of the occupation,” Hamas said.

“We call upon our heroic people in the West Bank for greater unity and cohesion with the resistance, intensification of the popular momentum and field confrontation with the occupation and its settlers until the aggression is repelled, the occupation is expelled, and we attain our freedom and legitimate rights,” the group added.

Liverpool Sign Federico Chiesa From Juventus In Cut-Price Deal

Federico Chiesa joined Liverpool from Juventus on Thursday in a deal worth a reported 12.5 million pound ($16.5 million) for the Italian international, who has been dogged by injuries. The 26-year-old has joined on a four-year deal for an initial 10 pound million with a further 2.5 million pound dependent upon the team’s performance during his time at Anfield. Chiesa was one of the rising stars of European football after his role in helping Italy win Euro 2020.

But his career has been derailed by a cruciate ligament injury suffered in January 2022 and a number of fitness issues since.

“I said yes immediately because I know the history of this club, I know what it represents to the fans,” Chiesa said in a club statement.

“I’m so happy and I can’t wait to get started.”

His arrival adds even more depth to a Liverpool frontline boasting Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo.

Chiesa had entered the final year of his contract at the Italian giants and was not selected for new Juventus coach Thiago Motta‘s first two matches in charge.

He becomes just Liverpool’s second signing of the transfer window and the first to go into Arne Slot’s squad for this season.

A deal to bring Georgian goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia was agreed earlier this week but he will not arrive at Anfield until next season.

Floods In Nigeria Kill At Least 179, Displace Around 200,000

Lagos, Nigeria:

Floods have killed at least 179 people and displaced around 200,000 more in parts of Nigeria after a “few weeks” of intense rain, an emergency official said on Thursday.

Most of the serious flooding has been in the north of Nigeria so far. At least 107,600 hectares (265,885 acres) of farmlands have also been affected, figures published by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) showed.

Most of the deaths were in the country’s northern region, but NEMA spokesman Ezekiel Manzo said the central and southern parts of Nigeria may be hit harder as rain intensifies.

He did not say exactly when the deaths and displacements had occurred.

“The collection of water from the northern part flowing downward will also mean that the situation being witnessed the same in central and southern parts of the country will become worse,” Manzo told AFP.

Communities along the banks of major rivers Niger and Benue are at higher risk. Some parts of the country previously not known to be flood-prone have seen floods, Manzo said.

Flooding, usually caused by abundant rains and poor infrastructure, has caused large-scale destruction in Africa’s most populous country in the past.

More than 360 people died and more than 2.1 million were displaced in 2012.

In 2022, more than 500 people died and 1.4 million were displaced in the worst floods in a decade.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu said in a statement on Wednesday that authorities would provide warnings to mitigate the impact of environmental mishaps.

Manzo said emergency officials have mapped out plans to forestall a recurrence.

“We don’t have time to waste any longer so people will not be caught unaware,” he told AFP.

"Not To Seek Revenge": Top Court On Criminal Proceedings Against Wrongdoer

'Not To Seek Revenge': Top Court On Criminal Proceedings Against Wrongdoer

New Delhi:

The Supreme Court said on Thursday that the purpose of criminal proceedings is to bring a wrongdoer to justice and not to seek revenge or pursue vendetta.

A bench of Justices JK Maheshwari and Sanjay Karol made the observation while dealing with a case of criminal breach of trust in which a man named Padala Veerabhadra Rao of Telangana has accused the former in-laws of his daughter of not returning the ‘streedhan’ given at the time of marriage.

Streedhan is a term that is used to refer to gifts including money and property that a woman receives from her parents, relatives, or in-laws.

The bench reiterated the settled position of law that a female (wife or former wife) has the “singular right” on ‘streedhan’ and sole authority over it.

Regarding the criminal case instituted by Mr Rao against the former in-laws of his daughter, the bench said, “We may further observe that the object of criminal proceedings is to bring a wrongdoer to justice, and it is not a means to get revenge or seek a vendetta against persons with whom the complainant may have a grudge.” Mr Rao’s claim was that he gave gold ornaments and other articles at the time of the wedding in 1999, and thereafter the couple went to the USA.

He claimed that while in the USA, his daughter was tortured due to which his wife got severely disturbed and eventually died on June 6, 2008.

In his complaint, Mr Rao said his daughter and son-in-law got divorced in 2016, after 16 years of marriage on August 14, 2015 in the US.

In an FIR he lodged in 2021, Mr Rao alleged that the jewellery he had gifted to his daughter but entrusted to her in-laws at the time of the wedding, were not returned. His daughter remarried in 2018. The FIR was registered under Section 406 IPC (criminal breach of trust).

The bench said jurisprudence, as developed by the top court in such matters, is unequivocal about the “singular right” of the female (wife or former wife) as the case may be, being the sole owner of ‘streedhan’.

“It has been held that a husband has no right, and it has to then be necessarily concluded that a father too, has no right when the daughter is alive, well, and entirely capable of making decisions such as pursuing the cause of the recovery of ‘stridhan’,” Justice Karol, who penned the verdict on behalf of the bench, said.

The court noted that the action was initiated for securing possession of the articles more than 20 years since the date of marriage and five years after the settlement of all marital issues at the time of divorce and that too, not by the complainant’s daughter, but by Mr Rao himself.

“This coupled with the fact that there is no authorization on the part of the complainant’s daughter in his favour to initiate proceedings for recovery of ‘stridhan’ exclusively belonging to her, beckons the question on the basis of which the complainant has initiated the present proceedings,” it added.

After perusing the material on record, the bench said in view of the facts of this case, there is no iota of proof on record to show that he had entrusted the ‘stridhan’ of his daughter to her former in-laws, which allegedly was illegally kept by them.

“In view of the above, we also hold that the charge under Section 6 of the Dowry Prohibition Act is not made out and therefore, fails. Consequently, the only conclusion that can be drawn is that the proceedings initiated by the complainant against the present appellants (former in-laws) have to be quashed and set aside. “Any action commenced as a result thereof is bad in law. The questions raised in this appeal are answered accordingly,” the bench said in its order.
