Hyderabad: Farmers continued to hit the streets in several areas in the State raising basic issues, including water for their crops.

On Thursday, while farmers in Metpally and Medipally in Jagtial staged protests over the State government’s failure in implementation of the crop loan waiver, farmers in Nalgonda held demonstrations demanding water supply for their crops. The protests at Metpally and Medipally saw the ryots demanding that the State government waive all crop loans without imposing any conditions. Farmers from surrounding villages also staged a rasta roko near the old bus stand in Metpally town forcing vehicular traffic on National Highway 63 to a standstill for a while.

Similarly, farmers under the aegis of Medipally mandal Reddy Sangam staged a dharna and rasta roko on NH 63 in Medipally mandal headquarters. They raised slogans against the State government and Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy. The Congress government, which promised to waive all crop loans during the elections, changed its voice after coming to power and was putting conditions if the farmers wanted the waiver, they said, adding that the government was trying to wash off its hands from its promise by waiving off crop loans of just a few farmers.

The agitating farmers demanded that government to waive all crop loans up to Rs.2 lakh without imposing any conditions, provide Rs.15,000 as Rythu Bharosa financial assistance per acre of land and to provide the promised bonus of Rs.500 to normal variety paddy too. They wanted the government to conduct a door-to-door survey over crop loan waiver scheme implementation and accordingly deposit the amount in their bank accounts. They withdrew their protests after Revenue and police officials assured to take their demands to the notice of the State government.

In Nalgonda, farmers from Kukkadam, Madugulapally, Indugula and Agamothukur, who have been staging protests for want of water since the last few days in different villages came together on Thursday to stage a protest at Kukkadam and raised slogans against the government. The farmers from the constituencies of Miryalguda, Nalgonda and Nagarjuna Sagar have been pleading with officials to ensure supply of sufficient water but their appeals were not being considered, they said.

Most of these villages are in the tail end areas and get water through the SLBC flood flow canal. Farmers in over 80,000 acres of the ayacut are dependent on the supply of water through the canal, they said, adding that since the last few days, they were complaining to officials that farmers in the upstream areas of the canal were drawing excess water illegally by operating motors. As a result, those in the tail end areas were not getting any supply.

The farmers also said unless the water supply was ensured through the canal, the recharging process of groundwater would also get affected. All these would eventually damage the standing crops, they rued.

Gruesome photos of US Marines massacre of Iraqi civilians spark global outrage

The recently disclosed images from the 2005 massacre by US Marines in the Iraqi town of Haditha have shocked the world, igniting a wave of outrage and condemnation on social media.

Under the Freedom of Information Act and after years of legal battles, The New Yorker magazine obtained and released the images of the carnage that killed 24 civilians, including a three-year-old girl.

The graphic photos, which have been kept hidden for nearly two decades, show the victims, many of them shot in the head at close range.

The carnage, whose perpetrators never spent a day behind bars, adds to the long list of atrocities committed by the US occupation forces in Iraq, including those at the notorious Abu Ghraib prison.

Social media users are denouncing the bloodshed as a stark reminder of the numerous war crimes committed by the US forces in Iraq and across the region, as well as the lack of accountabilty for those involved.

“This,” journalist Murtaza Hussain reminded the world, “is what the US military was doing in Iraq.”

Activist Greg J Stoker said in an X post, “This is big. US interventionism must end now.”

American journalist Max Blumenthal said the photos of the US massacre “are indictments of the contemporary US political establishment, including the current president who whipped the vote in support of invading Iraq.”

Another user highlighted Washington’s efforts to conceal the truth, while others drew a parallel between the Haditha massacre and the Israeli genocide in Gaza.

The United States invaded Iraq in 2003 based on false claims about Baghdad possessing weapons of mass destruction, leaving a trail of destruction, death, and chaos in the Arab country.

The US and its allies re-launched a military campaign in 2014 to supposedly fight off the Daesh terrorist group.

The US military claimed to be ending its combat mission in Iraq in 2021, but said it would retain some 2,500 troops in the country as alleged advisors, although Baghdad and its allies had decisively defeated terrorists in late 2017.

In 2020, the Iraqi parliament voted in favor of the expulsion of the foreign forces after a US drone strike assassinated Iran’s top anti-terror commander, General Qassem Soleimani, and deputy commander of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) counter-terrorism force, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, outside Baghdad International Airport.

Paris: Just weeks after hosting the Olympics, Paris inaugurated the 2024 Paralympics on Wednesday with a nearly four-hour-long opening ceremony in the heart of the city.

Against the backdrop of a setting sun, thousands of athletes paraded down the famed Champs-Elysées avenue to Place de la Concorde in central Paris where French President Emmanuel Macron officially declared the Paralympic Games open.

About 50,000 people watched the ceremony in stands built around the iconic square, which is the biggest in Paris and is visible from afar because of its ancient Egyptian Obelisk. Accessibility for athletes in wheelchairs was facilitated with strips of asphalt laid along the avenue and placed over the square.

More than 4,000 athletes with physical, visual and intellectual impairments will compete in 22 sports from Thursday until September 8. Organisers say more than 2 million of the 2.8 million tickets have been sold for the various Paralympic events.

The opening ceremony was held outside the confines of a stadium, just like when the Olympics opened in the city on July 26. Fighter planes flew overhead, leaving red-white-and blue vapors in the colors of the French national flag, before the delegations entered the square in alphabetical order.

Some delegations were huge — more than 250 athletes from Brazil — and some were tiny — less than a handful from Barbados and just three from Myanmar. Ukraine’s delegation got a loud cheer and some of the crowd stood to applaud them.

Flag bearers Steve Serio and Nicky Nieves led the U.S. team’s delegation. The French arrived last and to roars from the crowd, which then sang along to popular French songs, including “Que Je T’aime” by late rocker Johnny Hallyday.

Throughout the show, directed by Thomas Jolly who also led the Olympic opening ceremony, singers, dancers and musicians with and without disabilities performed on stage together seamlessly, projecting a theme of inclusion and overcoming physical differences. Lucky Love, a French singer who lost his left arm at birth, was joined by performers in wheelchairs. Other acts featured dancers with crutches.

International Paralympic Committee President Andrew Parsons said he hoped the Paris Paralympics would start an “inclusion revolution” beyond the field of sport.

The Paralympic flag was raised high into the night sky and its emblem adorned the top of the Arc de Triomphe about 3 kilometers (2 miles) away. Although Wednesday night’s show started at 8 pm local time, fans had gathered hours earlier under a scorching sun to get top spots along the way.

Apple’s global revenues to surpass $400 billion for first time this year

New Delhi: Driven by growth in both hardware and services segments, Apple’s global revenues are expected to cross the $400-billion mark for the first time in 2024, a report said on Wednesday.

After a decline in 2023, Apple’s hardware revenues are expected to grow 3 per cent (year-on-year) in 2024, according to Counterpoint Research.

All the key hardware segments – iPhone, iPad, Mac, Watch, AirPods – are likely to drive this growth supported by new launches. AirPods could emerge as the fastest-growing segment this year.

“In terms of growth rates, and now with the advent of Apple Intelligence, the services segment does seem very exciting. It is poised to grow at a much faster rate than hardware,” said Tarun Pathak, Director, Counterpoint Research.

However, in terms of absolute revenue growth, hardware remains critical in pushing the needle considering it contributes to three-fourths of Apple’s global revenues.

“After a decline in 2023, 2024 will see growth in several key hardware categories driven by multiple launches. Then there is also a promise of Apple Intelligence being implemented across hardware segments, which has once again created some excitement and could drive upgrades,” Pathak mentioned.

Meanwhile, services revenue will continue to grow and reach record levels in 2025, crossing the $100-billion mark for the first time.

Apple Intelligence could boost the services revenue by at least 10-15 per cent in coming years depending on how Apple chooses to monetise, the report mentioned.

In 2025, the revenue from services is likely to become bigger than the revenue from hardware excluding iPhones.

Meanwhile, riding on robust local production, Apple is all set to create 5-6 lakh jobs (direct and indirect) in the coming 1-2 years in India. The iPhone exports continue to clock around $1 billion each month thanks to the government’s production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme.

According to the government, in the ecosystem of Apple alone, more than 2 lakh people have got employment and there is good amount of growth. Apple aims to manufacture more than 50 million iPhones in India per year, as it aims to shift some of the production out from China.
