'Kill Him, Will Give My Land...': Manipur BJP Spokesperson's FIR Over Death Threats, Attack On House

Imphal/Guwahati/New Delhi:

Manipur BJP spokesperson and Thadou tribe leader T Michael Lamjathang Haokip has filed a police case after two dozen people, some of them armed, burned a portion of his house and fired shots in the air in Churachandpur on Sunday night.

In the first information report (FIR), Mr Haokip named 15 people as “directly or indirectly” responsible for the attack on his property and family. He also named two people who allegedly asked members of a WhatsApp group to kill him. One of the two promised to give “village land” to anyone who kills the state BJP spokesperson.

“… Suspect the involvement of the fake Thadou Tribe Council (TTC-GHQ) leaders and operatives, who have made violent rhetoric and provocative statements,” Mr Michael said in the FIR.

He attached printouts of the WhatsApp group’s screenshots which showed the discussions to kill him. The police and the cyber cell will check the phone numbers with their service providers, and if needed will take help from central anti-terror cybersecurity experts, Mr Haokip told NDTV. He declined to give further details.

In the purported screenshot of the WhatsApp group chat attached to the FIR, one of the members had written, “SA (separate administration) will not be acceptable without killing LJT (Lamjathang) first, even if the central government is willing to grant us.” Another member wrote, “I promise to give my village land if anyone kills Lamjathang.”

NDTV has seen a copy of the FIR, which shows some phone numbers in the WhatsApp group.

Mr Haokip said the attacks and threats came as a result of him raising awareness about his tribe, Thadou, being inaccurately referred to as a Kuki tribe amid the ethnic tension in Manipur. He said it was the second time his house in Churachandpur was attacked, allegedly by those who do not accept the Thadou tribe’s distinct identity.

The police case was filed a day after a new video threatening to kill the BJP spokesperson and Thadou leader was shared widely on social media. The video shows a man in black tactical wear surrounded by three in camouflage battle dress carrying AK series assault rifles. All of them wore masks.

“Lamjathang, if you speak against the community one more time or disgrace the community, we will kill you whether you are in  Guwahati or Delhi… Meiteis didn’t differentiate between Thadou, Kuki or Zomi,” the man in the middle said.

The four men cannot be village defence volunteers who usually carry licenced single-barrelled and small-calibre handguns, a retired police officer in Churachandpur said, requesting anonymity.

“They can only be insurgents, and this threat can’t be taken lightly, as they are openly claiming they can kill a civilian anywhere in the country. This would not be the first time someone from Manipur is facing a threat to life even while living outside the state,” the retired officer said.

NDTV couldn’t independently verify the video, though some members of the Thadou tribe said the video and the dialect heard in it are genuine, based on what their own sources told them in Churachandpur.

The TTC-GHQ which Mr Haokip alleged is a “fake” organisation has six advisers, and 10 executive members, according to the last published information of the group’s structure. The TTC did not take the consent of four of them before making them members of the “council”. The four have given in writing that they were not aware of their membership of the TTC. They requested anonymity for fear of attacks.

“My father’s consent was not there. Clarification already given,” the son of one of the four people said.

Calls to the TTC’s publicly available numbers went unanswered.

The TTC has been condemning Mr Haokip’s comments on the Thadou tribe not being part of Kuki. The TTC has said in a statement that it is the mainstream Thadou body and affiliated to the Kuki Inpi Manipur. “… Appropriate action shall be initiated if they continued to misuse Thadou again in future,” the TTC had said in a statement on July 21.

In its recent statement on August 20, the TTC criticised a new Thadou body called Thadou Community International (TCI) as not genuine and formed by some people “to collaborate with Chief Minister N Biren Singh”.

Mr Haokip is one of the key members of the TCI, a group that claims to be a global Thadou tribe platform to look into critical issues facing the community, particularly in Manipur.

No one was injured in the attack at Mr Haokip’s house on Sunday night. Four families displaced by the violence in Manipur also live in four small structures at his family plot, Mr Haokip had said.

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh and other leaders had strongly condemned the attack. “…I consider this personal harm being put on one of our recognised tribes as a direct challenge to the unity and integrity of the state. Attacks on any particular community of the recognised tribes of Manipur, as well as the attack on the family of the BJP spokesperson, are condemned in the strongest terms. We will initiate appropriate legal action against the culprits,” Mr Singh had said in a post on X.

The clashes between the valley-dominant Meitei community and the nearly two dozen tribes under the Kukis nomenclature – a term given by the British in colonial times – who are dominant in some hill areas of Manipur, has killed over 220 people and internally displaced nearly 50,000.

The general category Meiteis want to be included under the Scheduled Tribes category, while the Kukis who share ethnic ties with people in neighbouring Myanmar’s Chin State and Mizoram want a separate administration carved out of Manipur, citing discrimination and unequal share of resources and power with the Meiteis.

It’s Glowtime: Apple all set to launch iPhone 16 series on September 9

New Delhi: Tech giant Apple announced a special event on September 9 at which it will launch the new iPhone line-up along with other gadgets and software services. The company’s launch tagline this year is ‘It’s Glowtime’, and the event will broadcast from Apple Park in Cupertino, California, in the US.

According to reports, the iPhone 16 lineup will be Apple’s flagship rival to the new Pixel 9 series and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold devices. Apple Intelligence (AI) will be a huge leap for the Apple device ecosystem at the event hosted by its CEO Tim Cook.

Among the big changes coming to the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus is expected to be a switch to a vertically aligned camera system on the back. Meanwhile, iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max devices may get bigger screens along with a new bronze colour. This time, all four models are likely to have the ‘action button’, which was exclusive to the Pro line with the iPhone 15. The new iPhones may also have a new button dedicated to capturing photos and videos.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Apple Intelligence features are likely to be a big part of Apple’s event. The users can also witness the new AirPods 4 and Watch Series 10 at the event. According to sources, the India-assembled Apple devices will be available within 1-2 months of the global launch in partnership with leading manufacturer Foxconn’s facility in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu.

Meanwhile, iPhone 16 is set to be made available on the first day of global sales in India, just like last year when iPhone 15 arrived in the domestic market on the very first day of the global sale. It will be shortly followed by iPhone 16 Plus models, sources added.

Iraqi Resistance launches drone strike on Israeli power station in Haifa

Fighters from Iraqi anti-terror resistance groups have launched a drone attack on a strategic site in the Israeli-occupied port city of Haifa in support of Palestinians plagued by the regime’s months-long onslaught on the besieged Gaza Strip.

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella group of anti-terror fighters, in a statement published on its Telegram channel, said the drone strike targeted “Alon Tavor Industrial Power Station” in Haifa in the early hours of Thursday.

The statement underlined that the operation was aimed at “resisting the occupation, in support of Gaza, and in response to the massacres committed by the usurping entity against Palestinian civilians, including children, women and the elderly.”

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq announced on Tuesday that it had struck a “vital target” in Haifa in the occupied Palestinian territories, using drones.

The coalition has been conducting numerous such operations against sensitive targets lying across the occupied territories since October 7 last year, when the Israeli regime began bringing the Gaza Strip under a genocidal war. More than 40,530 Palestinians, most of them women and children, have been killed in the brutal Israeli military onslaught so far.

Back in July, the anti-terror resistance groups launched drones at the Orot Rabin Power Plant in the occupied city of Hadera in support of Palestinians in Gaza and in response to the continued Israeli massacres against Palestinian civilians.

Over the past weeks, the resistance has also ramped up its retaliatory attacks against the US occupation bases across Iraq and neighboring Syria due to Washington’s unbridled political, military, and intelligence support for Israel’s atrocities in Gaza.

"Can't Take Bangladesh Lightly": Ex-India Star's Warning For Rohit And Co

Former Indian cricketer Suresh Raina said that Bangladesh cannot be taken lightly as the Asian side has a fine bowling attack as India prepares, adding that this series will be a practice match ahead of the Border Gavaskar Trophy. Raina was speaking at a Legends League Cricket (LLC) event in Delhi on Thursday. Speaking to ANI, Raina said, “Now, a team for Tests will be formed. Top players playing Duleep Trophy is a nice initiative by the BCCI. You get to know a lot of things when you play red-ball cricket.”

“You cannot take Bangladesh lightly as they have a fine spin bowling attack and some good players who have done well for a long time. This series will be a fine match practice for the tour to Australia,” he added.

The Duleep Trophy, which marks the beginning of red-ball cricket in the domestic season, will feature top Indian stars from the international circuit and emerging talents competing at the highest level. The tournament is set to begin on September 5, 2024, in Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh and M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru.

Star India batters Rishabh Pant, Kishan, Shubman Gill and many more players are set to feature in the Duleep Trophy 2024-25 season.

Also, India will be playing a two-match series against Bangladesh at home from September 19 to October 1, in which Bangladesh spinners like Shakib Al Hasan, Taijul Islam, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Mahedi Hasan etc could feature. The squad for the Indian tour has not been announced yet.

This will be followed by a three-match test series against New Zealand from October 16 to November 5. These two series’ will pave India’s preparation for the Border Gavaskar Trophy later this year.

Speaking on Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant’s ICC T20 World Cup campaign, Raina lauded Pant for his “passion, hard work, mentality and great determination”.

“The way he practises, he is doing very good wicket-keeping, he has batted very well and when you win the World Cup you know how much fun it is,” added Raina.

Pant was the third-highest run-getter for India in their T20 World Cup triumph. He amassed 171 runs at an average of 24.42 in eight matches and also contributed with his skills behind the stumps with 14 dismissals, the most by a wicketkeeper in a single T20 WC edition. His influential performances helped India end their 13-year-long ICC World Cup drought.

On the future of a polarising Impact Player rule in the Indian Premier League (IPL) next year, Raina said that the rule adds and changes a lot within the game by adding one extra batter or bowler to the side and expressed his preference for “old school cricket” with 11 players.

Legends League Cricket will be played in India and Qatar from September 11 to October 5 this year.

Israel, Hamas Agree To Zoned 3-Day Pauses For Gaza Polio Vaccinations: WHO

Gaza:

The Israeli military and Palestinian militant group Hamas have agreed to three separate, zoned three-day pauses in fighting in the Gaza Strip to allow for the vaccination of some 640,000 children against polio, a senior WHO official said on Thursday.

The vaccination campaign is due to start on Sunday, said Rik Peeperkorn, the World Health Organization’s senior official for the region.

He said the campaign would start in central Gaza with a three-day pause in fighting, then move to southern Gaza, where there would be another three-day pause, followed by northern Gaza. Peeperkorn added that there was an agreement to extend the humanitarian pause in each zone to a fourth day if needed.

The WHO confirmed on Aug. 23 that at least one baby has been paralyzed by the type 2 polio virus, the first such case in the territory in 25 years.

The Israeli military’s humanitarian unit (COGAT) said on Wednesday that the vaccination campaign would be conducted in coordination with the Israeli military “as part of the routine humanitarian pauses that will allow the population to reach the medical centers where the vaccinations will be administered.”

Delhi Cop Seen Dancing At Colleague's Farewell, Dies Moments Later

Delhi Cop Seen Dancing At Colleague's Farewell, Dies Moments Later

Ravi Kumar was posted at Roop Nagar police station in the national capital

New Delhi:

A young police officer, who was dancing at a farewell party in Delhi, died after probably suffering a heart attack. Ravi Kumar, the head constable in Delhi police, was enjoying the farewell party of a colleague when he suddenly experienced pain in his chest and collapsed. The incident happened on Wednesday.

Mr Kumar was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital but the doctors declared him dead. He was posted at Roop Nagar police station in the national capital. A video capturing the final moments of the cop has now emerged which shows him and another man shaking a leg together on a loud Haryanvi song. Moments later, a smiling Ravi is seen stepping aside. He suffered the heart attack after that.

According to a PTI report, Ravi Kumar, a resident of Baghpat in Uttar Pradesh, lived in Model Town area and is survived by his wife and two children. He joined the Delhi Police Force in 2010. Mr Kumar had had an angiography done about 45 days ago.

This is not the first case where people have suffered heart attacks while dancing or perform. ming at an event. In April this year, an 18-year-old girl, who was dancing at her sister’s wedding ceremony in UP’s Meerut, collapsed and died soon after. A video showed Rimsha trying to match dance steps with her family members to loud music. But, seconds later, she was seen touching her chest and trying to hold the hand of the boy dancing next to her, before collapsing.

A month later, a yoga event in Indore witnessed heart-rending scenes when a retired soldier collapsed on stage, clutching the Indian flag, while delivering an enthusiastic performance on a patriotic song. Assuming that the fall was part of the act, the audience continued to clap for over a minute before one of the organisers realised that something had gone horribly wrong.

In October last year, at least 10 heart attack deaths were reported at garba events across Gujarat in the past 24 hours and the youngest of the victims was just 17 years old.

KTR decries tactics adopted to avoid loan waiver

KTR decries tactics adopted to avoid loan waiver

Hyderabad: Highlighting the controversy centered around the requirement for farmers to submit a self-declaration to prove their eligibility for loan waivers, BRS working president KT Rama Rao on Thursday called it a humiliating experience.

The new requirement for farmers to provide self-declarations has sparked outrage. He said the process was demeaning. He dubbed it a “Self-Declaration Drama,” a tactic aimed at avoiding fulfillment of the loan waiver promises. Recalling the episode of an elderly woman who was asked to repay her pension in Kothagudem in similar conditions, he said the farmers might face similar treatment.

Rama Rao said Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy was doubting and harassing farmers. He said the government’s promises of loan waivers in many cases was false propaganda, with numerous hurdles placed in the way of farmers seeking relief. He added that the government’s actions were a betrayal of the farmers’ trust.

Highlighting the plight of farmers in Revanth Reddy’s own village, Kondareddypalli, he posted a video by a YouTuber that has gone viral. In the video, over a dozen farmers express their frustration, stating that they have not received any loan waivers. Many were deprived of debt relief due to issues with ration cards and discrepancies in Aadhaar card entries.
