"His View, Not Congress's": Sam Pitroda On Jairam Ramesh's "Assurance" Post

'His View, Not Congress's': Sam Pitroda On Jairam Ramesh's 'Assurance' Post

Sam Pitroda today said he could perhaps have put his views in different words.

Sam Pitroda, the Congress’s overseas unit chief, is back in his post — with an apparent caveat. The party’s communication in-charge Jairam Ramesh said Mr  Pitroda had “given an assurance” that he would, in future, leave no room for controversy. Asked about the matter, Mr Pitroda replied, a trifle sharply, that it was not the Congress view, but the view of Mr Ramesh.

“The Congress is not saying that. Jairam is saying that,” he told NDTV in an exclusive interview today. “What Jairam says is Jairam’s view, it is not necessarily the party’s view. It is okay for Jairam to say that and I respect it. I have to do what I have to do. In the process, I am entitled to make mistakes,” he said.

Mr Pitroda, who had stepped down from his post on May 8 after a couple of comments that became hugely controversial, was reinstated yesterday.

The reappointment was announced by the party in a statement. Later in the evening, Mr Ramesh said the decision was taken after Mr Pitroda clarified the context of the statements and gave an assurance that he would not “leave room for such controversies to arise” in the future.

In a post on X, Mr Ramesh said, “During the recent election campaign Sam Pitroda had made some statements and comments that were totally unacceptable to the Indian National Congress. By mutual consent he stepped down as Chairman of Overseas Indian Congress.”

“Subsequently he clarified the context in which statements were made and how they were later distorted by the Modi campaign. The Congress President has reappointed him on the assurance that he will not in future leave room for such controversies to arise,” he had added.

Mr Pitroda had stepped down from the party’s overseas post after his comment that India is a “diverse country… where people in the East look like the Chinese, people on West look like Arabs, people in the North look like maybe White and people in South look like Africans.”

It had triggered allegations of racism and colonial mindset. With the controversy of Mr Pitroda’s earlier comments yet to die down, the Congress had found itself firefighting on multiple fronts, its campaign focusing on unemployment, inflation, farmers issues and the Constitution completely overshadowed.

In April, Mr Pitroda had made a remark on inheritance tax in the US that had drawn a fierce attack from the BJP. He had cited inheritance tax as an example of “new policies that can “help prevent concentration of wealth” which should be discussed and debated. The Congress, he had added, always helps people at the bottom of the economic pyramid.

Mr Pitroda today admitted that he could perhaps have put it better, while making the point that the focus today is not about the meaning in a conversation but its form.

What cannot be questioned, he underscored, was his commitment to the Congress.

“I am grown up. I know my responsibility for my party. I am committed to Congress. I have been a congressman from Day One and I will remain a Congressman till I die… It has nothing to do with what I say… but my commitment to values. I believe in the Congress ideology,’ he added.

IND vs ENG Live: Not an easy pitch to bat on

Eight runs came off Jofra Archer’s second over. This pitch is tough to bat on. The hard length is well suited to the bowlers, like we saw in case of Virat Kohli’s dismissal. An all-out attack would not be a good idea on this surface and Rohit Sharma is trying to adapt with it.

Rohit Sharma is lucky there. Jofra Archer bowled it short outside off stump and Rohit cut it. He failed to keep the ball down but Phil Salt at backward point failed to take the catch. The ball ran away for a four.

    IND 11/0 (2)

  • 21:19 (IST)

IND vs ENG Live: First over done

That is the end of an eventful over from Reece Topley. He put pressure on both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli with some really good swing and line. Not only Rohit found an outside edge, but Virat Kohli too nearly lost his wicket as an inswinging delivery missed his stumps by a narrow margin.

Houthi: US prestige badly damaged in wake of Yemeni operations

The leader of Ansarullah resistance movement says the US prestige has been badly damaged as a result of Yemeni maritime operations in support of Gaza.

In a televised speech broadcast live from the Yemeni capital Sana’a on Thursday evening, Abdul-Malik al-Houthi condemned the unconditional support of the US and the UK for the Israeli invasion of the Gaza Strip.

He said while Israel is extremely getting creative in perpetrating all kinds of crimes against the Gazans, the continuing US and British support for the regime is “reprehensible”.

“The heinous crimes of the Zionist regime across the Gaza Strip have exposed the extent of the enemy’s brutality, aggression, crime, cruelty and hatred,” Houthi said.

He cited the scene of an Israeli military dog attacking an elderly Palestinian woman inside her home in Gaza’s Jabalia refugee camp a few weeks ago.

The Ansarullah leader described Israel as an implacable enemy in every sense of the word, with which no party can coexist.

Yemen’s naval units, he said, will continue their strikes until the Israeli onslaught against Gaza ends, and its blockade on the coastal territory is lifted.

“The struggle against the Zionist enemy is the right and wise choice, for which there is no other viable option,” he added.

The Ansarullah leader lambasted Arab countries for turning a blind eye to the suffering of the Palestinian nation, and maintaining trade ties with Israel.

The Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, he said, are “starving to death as the enemy is preventing food from getting into the territory”.

“All Arab and Muslim countries should seriously and sincerely try to support the Palestinians, and provide them with anything they need,” he said.

Houthi also rebuked the Arab media for failing to bring to light the misery of the Palestinians and the hunger they are enduring, and to expose the “true nature of the Zionist enemy and its sponsors”.

“Arab countries were expected to launch media, diplomatic and political campaigns in support of the Palestinians,” he said.

Houthi, instead, heaped praise on Arab resistance groups for their shows of solidarity with the Palestinians through launching military operations against Israeli targets and students in the West for holding protests on university campuses.

He cited ambushes being carried out by Gaza-based resistance fighters, saying the Israeli military is “losing big” after more than eight months of a ferocious invasion of the enclave.

“The Israeli enemy has failed to achieve any of its declared objectives in Gaza despite having massacred so many Palestinians there,” he added.

Houthi also praised Lebanon’s Hezbollah, saying its operations have hit Israeli settlers hard in the north and wrecked the regime’s economy.

Israel, he said, is seriously afraid of being drawn into a military confrontation with Hezbollah.

Houthi then lauded Yemeni armed forces for their recent multiple joint operations with Iraqi resistance groups against Israeli-linked ships in the Red Sea and Israeli targets in the occupied territories.

He reserved a special mention for Yemen’s domestically-developed Toophan-1 (Storm-1) drone, used in a recent operation against the Liberia-flagged bulk carrier MV Tutor in the southern Red Sea on June 12, calling it highly effective in damaging Israeli-affiliated vessels.

Toophan-1 reportedly comes in three variants, can carry various payloads and its varied propulsion systems enables it to cover a wide range of power levels.

The basic variant of the USV can carry a payload of up to 150 kilograms, cruises at the maximum speed of 35 nautical miles per hour.

Toophan-1 drone boat is controlled by and steered by an operator toward its target. It could also be programmed to move towards the designated target and detonate in its close proximity if needed.

The unmanned surface vehicle is capable of destroying fixed and mobile targets as well as naval infrastructure, and its explosive payload can deal substantial damage to a broad range of vessels.

The Ansarullah leader finally called upon all walks of the Yemeni society to pour onto the streets across the country on Friday and reiterate their solidarity with oppressed Palestinians.

Drop in sale of residential units: Hyderabad real estate losing charm?

Hyderabad: The charm for a slice of property in Hyderabad seems to have been impacted with the residential supplies and absorption slipping drastically in the second quarter of the year 2024.

In its latest research data, Anarock reveals that Hyderabad added just about 13,750 residential units in Q2 2024 as against around 22,960 units added in the first quarter. This drop in the number of residential units added translates to roughly about 40 per cent!

Not just new launches and absorption, Hyderabad also appears to be dropping out of realty radar with a drastic drop in sales, which Anarock data puts at 23 per cent. In the second quarter, the city recorded sales of approximate 15,085 as against 19,660 units sold in the previous quarter.

The data collated by Anarock in fact has Hyderabad being the biggest loser, with a 23 per cent drop in residential units sales, among the top seven cities of Kolkata (-18%), Chennai (-9%), Pune (-8%), Bengaluru (-8%), MMR (-3%) and NCR (6%).

The Anarock report states ‘the bull run in residential sales across the top 7 cities tamed down marginally in the second quarter of 2024, to the backdrop of increasing property prices and a high base record of the previous quarter (Q1 2024).’

The research data reveal that housing sales witnessed a quarterly drop of 8 per cent and stood at approximately 1,20,340 units in Q2 2024 across the top 7 cities, against approximately 1,30,170 units sold in Q1 2024.

The two western cities – MMR and Pune – accounted for over 52 per cent of the total sales in the top 7 cities with over 62,685 units sold altogether in these cities in Q2 2024. NCR is the only city to see a quarterly rise (of 6 %) in housing sales in the quarter against Q1 2024.

4.5 overs (0 Run)
Top delivery! Pitched up right in the channel around off at over 139 kph and gets it to zip away a bit. Jonny Bairstow looks to block but is beaten on the outside edge as the ball dies on its way to the keeper. Rishabh Pant does well to collect it on an awkward bounce.

Jonny Bairstow makes his way out to the centre now.

4.4 overs (0 Run)
OUT! TIMBER! A master-craftsman at work! Jasprit Bumrah comes in from a bit wider on the crease now and bowls this one at 125.8 kph, just a smidge full and getting it to angle back in a mile. The ball pitches on off, Phil Salt clears the front leg to slog it over mid-wicket but ends up playing all over the ball. The ball crashes into the stumps and England have now lost both openers inside the first five overs.

4.3 overs (0 Run)
The quicker one now, bowled on a hard length and angling back in a fair bit from around off, Phil Salt keeps it out to the leg side.

4.2 overs (1 Run)
Drop and run! Another slower one that is bowled full and around off, Moeen Ali with a block to the off side before setting off for the single.

4.1 overs (0 Run)
Skillfully done by Jasprit Bumrah. Slower one, pitched up on the off stump and it is the off-cutter that spins away after pitching. Moeen Ali just looks to block it off but the ball goes past the outside edge and drops in front of the keeper.

3.6 overs (2 Runs)
Nicely placed by Phil Salt and the batters pick up another easy two. Just short of a length and outside off stump, Salt stands tall and just pats it away wide of sweeper cover for a brace.

3.5 overs (1 Run)
The arm ball now, bowled on a length and around off, Moeen Ali looks to play at it but miscues the ball down to long on for a run.

3.4 overs (2 Runs)
On a length again and angled into the stumps, Moeen Ali works it away in front of square on the leg side and picks up a couple of easy runs in the deep.

3.3 overs (1 Run)
Quicker and flatter around off stump, Phil Salt uses the depth of the crease and backs away before hammering it down to long off for just one.

3.2 overs (1 Run)
Bowled flatter and on a length, angling it in from around off, Moeen Ali waits back and just knocks the ball through mid on for a single.

Moeen Ali comes in at number 3. Moeen has been sent ahead of Jonny Bairstow to counter the left-arm spin of Axar Patel.

3.1 overs (0 Run)
OUT! CAUGHT! What an introduction into the attack for Axar Patel and he’s got the big fish. Axar just strides in from around the stumps and slides one in fuller around off with that high-arm action. Jos Buttler tries to put him under pressure right away by bringing out the reverse sweep but miscues the ball right off the cue end of the bat. The ball lobs up just behind the keeper and Rishabh Pant takes a dolly of a catch.

2.6 overs (1 Run)
The slower bumper now, dug in well short and over the stumps, stays low as well, Jos Buttler gets surprised but manages to direct the pull in front of square leg for a single.

2.5 overs (4 Runs)
FOUR! Belted through the off side! A third slower ball on the trot but this is just too short and wide, Jos Buttler gets on top of the bounce and slaps the ball down in front of Ravindra Jadeja at cover for a third boundary in the over.

2.4 overs (0 Run)
Just back of a length and angling it across the right-hander, Jos Buttler presses back and forces it away towards cover.

2.3 overs (0 Run)
Much better from Arshdeep Singh. Slower one, bowled fuller and around off, Jos Buttler is well early in the drive and gets an inside edge back onto the pads.

2.2 overs (4 Runs)
FOUR! That’s too straight from Arshdeep Singh and easy pickings for Jos Buttler there. Too short and at the hips, Buttler just tickles it down to fine leg and picks up back-to-back boundaries.

2.1 overs (4 Runs)
FOUR! JUST OVER! Pitched up outside the line of off stump, Jos Buttler dances down the track and stays leg side of the ball before swatting it away over a leaping Hardik Pandya at mid off for a boundary.

1.6 overs (1 Run)
On a good length and at the pads, Jos Buttler with a flick of the wrist and the ball goes to deep square leg as the batters get one.

1.5 overs (4 Runs)
FOUR! Slightly streaky and slightly skillful as well from Jos Buttler. A tad fuller in length and around off stump, Buttler gets pegged back but does well to just open the bat face at the last minute to get it past the keeper and towards deep third for four runs.

1.4 overs (0 Run)
Good length in the channel around off, Jos Buttler goes back and across before trying to squeeze it out on the off side but can’t find the gap at cover-point.

1.3 overs (0 Run)
There’s that slow nature of the pitch on display again. Pitched up a bit, taking pace off as well, Jos Buttler looks to drive on the up but mistimes it uppishly on the bounce to mid off.

1.2 overs (2 Runs)
On a hard length and angled in at the batter, Jos Buttler clips it away neatly behind square leg and picks up a couple of handy runs.

1.1 overs (1 Run)
Starts off with a good-length delivery bowling it on a much straighter line at the stumps, Phil Salt gets inside the line and gets it away to deep square leg for a single.

Who will bowl from the other end? It will be Jasprit Bumrah.

0.6 over (1 Run)
Off the pads and just five runs come off the first over of the chase. Digs it in a bit short and at the hips, Phil Salt gets tangled up and the ball lobs up off his thigh pad towards short fine leg. They get a leg bye.

0.5 over (0 Run)
Good change-up from Arshdeep Singh! Bowls it slower at just 118 kph and full around the off stump, Phil Salt steps up to go big but is well beaten as the ball rolls to the keeper.

0.4 over (1 Run)
On a length and at the stumps, swinging back in a bit, Jos Buttler works it away through mid-wicket and picks up a single.

0.3 over (2 Runs)
Arshdeep Singh drags the length well back and bowls it at the batter. Jos Buttler is quick to see this and comes down the track before pulling the ball between deep square leg and the man at long leg for a couple of runs.

Pitched up around the off stump line and getting it to just nip back in a bit, late as well. Jos Buttler looks to play on the up but is a bit late and gets it off the inner half of the bat onto the leg side.

England are up and running right away! Just a hint of swing there from Arshdeep Singh as he bowls it full and shapes it back into the pads. Phil Salt flicks it away to deep square leg and gets off the mark with a single.

US prestige badly damaged in wake of Yemen ops against Israel

n a televised speech broadcast live from the Yemeni capital Sana’a on Thursday evening, Abdul-Malik al-Houthi condemned the unconditional support of the US and the UK for the Israeli invasion of the Gaza Strip.

“The struggle against the Zionist enemy is the right and wise choice, for which there is no other viable option,” he added, according to Press TV.

Nasrallah: Iran ‘strong fortress of resistance’ against oppressors

Hezbollah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah has described Iran as the “strong fortress of resistance” against oppressors, saying the Islamic establishment serves as a role model.

Nasrallah addressed via video link from Beirut a ceremony in Tehran Thursday to mark the 40th day since the passing of President Ebrahim Raeisi in a helicopter crash, hailing the country for taking the upheaval in its stride with fortitude and composure.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran emerged proudly and admirably from this tragic incident and presented an advanced and lofty model that is strong in facing all challenges,” he said.

Nasrallah said the incident, in which President Raeisi lost his life along with Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and six others in mountainous terrain in northwest Iran, was “very painful and historic” which left Iran faced with a threat.

“However, the rule is that we must turn threats into opportunities, as always emphasized by Eminent Leader of the Revolution” Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, he said.

“We have faced similar big and dangerous incidents in recent years. As an example, we can point to the assassination of two dear commanders, Hajj Qassem Soleimani and Hajj Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, that was a huge damage and at the same time a threat,” he added.

Lieutenant General Soleimani, head of Iran’s Quds Force, and Abu Mahdi, an Iraqi commander of the Popular Mobilization Forces, were assassinated in a US airstrike ordered by then-president Donald Trump at Baghdad airport in January 2020.

“But this threat turned into an opportunity. These bloodsheds marked the breakout of the uprising and a new life for the resistance and the establishment of the Islamic Republic of Iran and all the resistance movements in the region,” Nasrallah said.

Iran responded to the assassination by launching a barrage of missiles at US bases in Iraq, causing  brain concussion injuries among at least 110 American soldiers stationed there. Iranian officials have repeatedly vowed to take further steps and imposed sanctions on individuals taking part in the crime.

In April this year, Iran responded with its first-ever direct operation against Israel, launching over 300 missiles and attack drones from its territory at targets in the occupied territories, after an airstrike destroyed the consular section of Iran’s embassy in Damascus, killing 12 people.

The operation left Israel, still reeling from coordinated armed incursions from the Gaza Strip into the Gaza envelope of southern territories under Israeli occupation, further shell-shocked.

“All this was thanks to wise leadership [of Ayatollah Khamenei] and management and responsibility [of Iranian officials] in Iran and the region,” Nasrallah said.

The tragic loss of President Raeisi and his companions is “also an example, the outcome of which depends on our behavior”, the Hezbollah chief said.

“Thank God, the people of Iran became a model for the whole world through their direct presence and the way they dealt with the incident with general peace and stability,” he added.

Nasrallah said, “Enemies who were lying in wait and talking about riots happening here and there saw with their own eyes that despite all the difficult conditions it faced due to this incident, Iran was calm, stable, unified and united.”

He touched on millions of mourners who took to the streets in Iranian cities to pay their respects to the president and his companions and take part in their funeral processions, saying their huge presence carried a strong message for both friends and foes.

“The friends who were worried when they saw the presence of millions gained confidence and trust, and the enemies who were happy realized that they were facing a nation that was aware and present, that had great insight and loyalty. The funeral was an expression of this great and enormous loyalty.”

Canadian university sues own students over pro-Palestine encampment

In an unusual, strange and rare move, a Canadian university has filed a lawsuit against its own students seeking $1.5 million in damages for continuing its pro-Palestine encampment.

A court document published by the University of Waterloo said administrators sought “damages in the amount of $1,500,000, including damages for trespass, damage to property, intimidation, and ejectment.”

The lawsuit names “persons unknown” and seven specific people by name, and includes their email addresses.

The university alleges the student encampment has damaged the school’s reputation, driven up administrative and operational costs for the university and depreciated the university’s property values.

The suit calls on the encampment participants to stop camping and never do so again on campus.

Also, the defendants are directed to restore the school’s property to the way it was on May 12, including the removal of all fences, tents, shelters, barriers, rubbish, and more.

Participants of the encampment have also been told to stop interfering with the University’s Senate and Board of Governors meetings, and any other school meetings.

The document includes conditions for the court to allow Waterloo Regional Police or any police service to remove the encampment and arrest the participants.

In a statement at the time, Occupy UWaterloo said they “refused to sit idly by and watch our university support genocide with our tuition dollars!”

“For seven months the university has lied to, dismissed and surveilled students calling for divestment and an end to UW’s financial and academic ties to the genocidal and apartheid entity of Israel.”

The University of Waterloo, like many universities across North America, has been accused of double standards when it comes to Israel’s savage military campaign in Gaza.

A social media post from the encampment says, “Incredibly shameful that @UWaterloo is choosing to sue their own student body protesting their university’s complicity in a genocide that’s 9 months in and has claimed the lives of over 40,000.”

The post goes on to say, “History will absolve us. But you admin, how will you be remembered?”

The university move has also drawn widespread ridicule from many scholars and academics.

Emmett Macfarlane, a professor in the Department of Political Science, said the university had alluded to incidents of harassment and intimidation in its decision to sue, but “it offers no specifics, and does not even clearly state whether the university has made a legal judgment that a law has been broken (for example criminal harassment) or if is merely responding to complainants’ perception.”

The encampment has been in place on the lawn outside Graduate House since May 13, with the participants demanding the school disclose and divest from all connections to Israel’s war against Gaza.

There are still several high-profile encampments maintaining their presence in Canada, including at the University of Toronto and McGill University in Montreal.

Both universities have indicated that they would be pushing for those to be dismantled, too.

Pro-Palestine protests by students intensified in several countries across the world, including Canada, France, Mexico, and Australia, amid a crackdown on US students and a mounting death toll from Israel’s war on Gaza.

The students are calling for an end to Israel’s war on Gaza and demanding schools divest from companies that support the Israeli regime.

Israel launched the war on Gaza on October 7.  Tel Aviv has also blocked water, food, and electricity to Gaza, plunging the coastal strip into a humanitarian crisis.

Entire T20 World Cup tournament planned to favour India, claims Vaughan

Entire T20 World Cup tournament planned to favour India, claims Vaughan

New Delhi: Former England captain Michael Vaughan criticised the scheduling of the T20 World Cup semifinals, alleging that the whole tournament is planned to favour India and is “unfair” to other teams.

In the first semifinal of the tournament in Tarouba on Thursday, South Africa outclassed Afghanistan by nine wickets to cruise to the finals, ending their historic campaign in the tournament.

Vaughan claimed that Afgahnistan’s final should have been scheduled in Guyana, where India will take on defending champions England later in the day.

“Surely this Semi should have been the Guyana one .. but because the whole event is geared towards India it’s so unfair on others..,” Vaughan wrote on X.

Vaughan earlier stated that Afghanistan did not get enough time to prepare for their first-ever semi-final due to the flight delay and travelling. “So Afghanistan qualify for the WC semi winning in St Vincent on Monday night .. 4 hr flight delay on Tues to Trinidad so no time to practice or get accustomed to a new venue .. utter lack of respect to players i am afraid.. #T20WorldCup2024” he posted on X.

Afghanistan batters faltered against Proteas’ formidable bowling attack led by pacers Marco Jansen (three wickets), Kagiso Rabada (two wickets) and Anrich Nortje (two wickets) while Tabraiz Shamsi returned with the figures of 3-6 in his 1.5 overs to bundle out Afghanistan for 56/10 in 11.5 overs.

In the chase, Reeza Hendricks (29*) and captain Aiden Markram (23*) steered their side to a convincing nine-wicket win to book a title clash with the winner of the second semi-final between India and England at Providence Stadium. Unbeaten South Africa have the chance to lift their first limited-overs World Cup title in Bridgetown on Saturday, June 29 (IST).
