Israeli Troops Rush Into Gaza Neighbourhood, Order Palestinians To Go South

“It sounded as if the war is restarting”, says Mohammad Jamal (File)

Cairo:

Israel rushed into a neighbourhood in Gaza City on Thursday, ordering Palestinians to move south as the tanks rolled in and bombing the southern city of Rafah in what it says are the final stages of an operation against Hamas operatives there.

Residents of the Shejaia neighbourhood in Gaza City said they were taken by surprise by the sound of tanks approaching and firing in the early afternoon, with drones also attacking after overnight bombing of the city, which Israel had combed early in the war.

“It sounded as if the war is restarting, a series of bombings that destroyed several houses in our area and shook the buildings,” Mohammad Jamal, 25, a resident of Gaza City, told Reuters via a chat app.

Later on Thursday, the Palestinian Civil Emergency Service said the Israeli military strikes had killed at least seven people in Shejaia so far. More casualties are feared to be under the rubble where rescue teams cannot reach, it said.

Footage obtained by Reuters showed women, men and children carrying bags and food as they ran in the streets after the raid began. Some men carried injured children, some bleeding, in their arms as they fled.

“This is the (Israeli) occupation targeting us, as you can see. You can see the children, the targeting of children here,” said a man carrying a bleeding boy in his arms.

An Israeli military spokesperson said they had no comment on reports of casualties in Shejaia.

The armed wing of Hamas ally Islamic Jihad said it had detonated a pre-planted explosive device against an Israeli tank east of the district.

Israel accuses the operatives of hiding among civilians and says it warns displaced people to get out of the way of its operations against the fighters.

“For your safety, you must evacuate immediately south on Salah al-Din Street to the humanitarian zone,” army spokesperson Avichay Adraee posted on X in a call to residents and displaced people in Shejaia.

Residents and Hamas media said the tanks had moved in before the post and that people from the eastern suburb were running westward under fire as Israel had blocked the road south.

More than eight months into Israel’s war on Gaza triggered by the Hamas-led cross border attack on Oct. 7, aid officials say the enclave remains at high risk of famine, with almost half a million people facing “catastrophic” food insecurity.

“We are being starved in Gaza City, and are being hunted by tanks and planes with no hope that this war is ever ending,” Jamal said.

ANOTHER CHILD DIES OF MALNUTRITION

The death of another girl in Kamal Adwan Hospital late on Wednesday raised the number of children who have died of malnutrition and dehydration to at least 31, a Gaza health official said, adding that the war made recording such cases difficult.

Israel denies accusations it has created the famine conditions, blaming aid agencies for distribution problems and accusing Hamas of diverting aid, allegations the operatives deny.

In southern Gaza, drone footage on social media, which Reuters could not immediately authenticate, showed dozens of houses destroyed in parts of Rafah, with the Swedeya village on the western side of the city completely wiped out.

There was no immediate Israeli military comment on the military action.

International mediation backed by the U.S. has failed to yield a ceasefire agreement although talks are continuing amid intense Western pressure for Gaza to receive more aid.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said on Wednesday that he had discussed his proposals for governance of post-war Gaza that would include local Palestinians, regional partners and the U.S. but that it would be “a long and complex process”.

Senior U.S. officials told Gallant, who was visiting Washington, that the U.S. would maintain a pause on a shipment of heavy munitions for Israel while the issue is under review. The shipment was paused in early May over concerns the weapons could cause more Palestinian deaths in Gaza.

Hamas says any deal must bring an end to the war and full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, while Israel says it will accept only temporary pauses in fighting until Hamas, which has ruled Gaza since 2007, is eradicated.

When Hamas-led operatives rushed into southern Israel on Oct. 7, they killed around 1,200 people and seized more than 250 hostages, according to Israeli tallies.

The Israeli offensive in retaliation has so far killed 37,765 people, the Gaza health ministry said on Thursday, and has left the tiny, heavily built-up Gaza Strip in ruins.

The Gaza health ministry does not distinguish between combatants and non-combatants, but officials say most of those killed have been civilians. Israel has lost 314 soldiers in Gaza and says at least a third of the Palestinian dead are fighters.

25% Of iPhone Maker Foxconn's New Hires In India Are Married Women: Report

25% Of iPhone Maker Foxconn's New Hires In India Are Married Women: Report

The Foxconn factory currently has about 70 per cent women: Report (Representational)

New Delhi:

Apple iPhone maker Foxconn has informed the government that 25 percent of its new hires are married women and its safety protocol, which requires all employees to avoid wearing metal irrespective of gender or religion, is not discriminatory, sources said.

In an informal note shared with the government after reports suggested it is not hiring married women, Foxconn stated that such stipulations are not part of its policy and these claims may have been made by those individuals who were not hired, sources said.

They added that such media reports malign the fast-growing Indian manufacturing sector.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Labour and Employment on Wednesday sought a detailed report from the Tamil Nadu labour department on the issue of married women not being allowed to work at the Foxconn India Apple iPhone Plant, as reported by the media.

“Foxconn had clarified that 25 per cent of the latest hires are married women. This would mean nearly one-third of the total women are married. This ratio compares favourably to any factory in this sector currently operating in India,” one of the sources said.

The Foxconn factory currently has about 70 per cent women and 30 per cent men and the Tamil Nadu plant is the largest factory for women employment in the country with the total employment having touched 45,000 workers during peak periods, they said.

The company has also informed that the discussion around Hindu married women being discriminated against for wearing metals (ornaments and jewellery) is “entirely slanted” and wearing metal in such factories is a safety issue, a fact well recognised by both the industry and the government.

“Any person wearing metals – man or woman – regardless of their status (single or married) and their religion (Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Sikh etc.) are required to remove metals while working in the factory,” the source said quoting the company’s informal note.

For safety reasons, no one wearing metal is allowed to work on the shop floor and this is a prevalent practice in several industries.

According to sources, the company has stated that the media report is based on anecdotal comments by 5-10 people or potential job seekers.

These comments likely came from candidates who did not get the job or no longer work at Foxconn.

When contacted on the issue, Foxconn said that they hire workers of all backgrounds, genders, races and marital status, and they do not discriminate in hiring or recruitment.

“We enhanced our management process for hiring agencies in India in 2022 and identified four agencies that were posting ads that did not meet our standards. We took corrective action with those agencies and more than 20 job ads were removed,” Foxconn said in a statement.

It also refuted allegations of employment discrimination based on marital status, gender, religion or any other form.

“In our latest round of hiring almost 25 per cent of women are married. Married women are welcome to wear traditional metal ornaments while working in our facilities,” it said.

It added that the company provides qualified job seekers equal treatment and it works with relevant local agencies to ensure that all recruitment efforts follow Foxconn’s recruitment standards and guidelines, as well as local labour regulations.

Owji says new gas MoU with Russia will turn Iran to a gas hub

Speaking in a radio interview on Thursday a day after the Iranian National Gas Company (NIGC) and the Russian company Gazprom signed a memorandum of understanding for gas transfer from Russia to Iran, the Iranian oil minister said that the deal with Moscow will sharply increase Iran’s share in the international gas market.

“With this agreement, Iran’s share of trade will rise causing changes in international balances. In other words, the agreement will act as a revolution in the energy and industry scene of the region,” he said.

The bilateral agreement between the holders of 60 percent of the global gas reserves, as clean energy, has been concluded based on mutual interests in the international frameworks and will soon enter the contract and implementation stage, the Iranian said.

“Over the past three months, my colleagues were engaged in talks with Gazprom officials which bore fruit and fortunately led to the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between NIGC and Gazprom in the presence of the Iranian acting president Mohammad Mokhber and the managing director of the Russian company Alexi Miller,” he continued.

Owji said that Iran and Russia sit atop 60 percent of the world’s gas reserves, so signing this MoU is a great achievement with an impact on evolving energy equilibrium in the region. He further said that Iran with its widespread national gas pipeline network and the related infrastructures is fully prepared to take the gas.

The principal framework for gas transfer from Russia to Iran has been on the agenda since a long ago and the late president Ibrahim Raeisi insisted on being finalized, he said adding there is a readiness for changing the MoU into a contract in a short time that will be a turning point for both countries.

Telangana HC declines to quash petition filed by senior advocate accused of bribery

Telangana HC declines to quash petition filed by senior advocate accused of bribery

Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court on Wednesday declined to quash a criminal petition filed by a senior advocate of the High Court who is facing allegations of accepting Rs. 7 crore from a litigant with the alleged intent of bribing High Court judges to secure a favourable verdict.

Justice K Lakshman observed that the allegations levelled against the petitioner were grave. “The allegation that money was obtained to bribe the judges of this Court casts a serious doubt on the independence of judiciary and implies that justice is up for sale. Such serious allegations need to be investigated,” he said.

The petition came from a complaint filed by Dr Chintala Yadagiri, who alleged that he had engaged senior advocate Vedula Venkataramana as his counsel in a land dispute case. The complaint revealed that the advocate had demanded and received Rs.7 crore, assuring him that the money would be used to bribe High Court judges and ensure a favorable judgement. The promised judgment never happened, in fact the senior advocate failed to appear in his case, alleged the complainant. When the money was demanded back, the advocate allegedly failed to return the money, resorting to caste-based insults and threats when confronted. The advocate is alleged to have threatened the complainant of his life with the help of one Ahmed Bin Abdulla Balala, who was an MLA, the complaint disclosed.

V. Pattabhi, senior counsel for the petitioner contended that the allegations were false. He argued that the complaint was ambiguous, lacking particular dates for the purported payment, and that there was no proof to back up the assertions. The counsel further pointed that the case was civil in nature and concerned from an alleged incident occurred in 2005, and there was a significant delay of 19 years in filing the said complaint. Nimma Narayana the counsel for the defacto complainant submitted that alleged offences were cognizable in nature. The counsel highlighted that the genuineness of the allegations in the FIR could only be determined after the completion of the investigation, by relying on plethora of Supreme court judgements. The court expressed impression that certain allegations seems to be exaggerated and raised questions on the bonafides of the complaint as the complainant also agreed to proceed with an illegal agreement. The court considering the advocate’s reputation and the absence of any indication that his custodial interrogation was necessary, exercised the inherent power of the High Court under Section 482 of the CrPC and granted protection from arrest till the filing of the chargesheet. However, a condition was imposed on the petitioner to fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation.

Justice B Vijaysen Reddy of Telangana High court granted interim nail to Shaik Afzal Hassan, Junior Assistant at office of Asst Director Survey and Land Records Khammam. The Judge was dealing with a writ plea filed challenging the action of station house officer Khammam in filing multiple FIRs on the same cause of action. The allegations were that the petitioner was involved in the falsification and fabrication of Family Members Certificate and Death Certificate of Late Mr Syed Bajee S. A complaint was registered on the petitioner at Khammam for the said offences. Earlier Afzal was granted anticipatory bail in two FIRs registered against him with sureties. The petitioner counsel said that while Afzal was complying the conditions of Anticipatory Bail, with a pre-meditated plan police registered another FIR on same day and arrested Afzal. After considering the rival contentions of both parties, the judge observed that even though the petitioner was granted anticipatory bail he was deprived of the same. Emphasizing on fundamental rights, the petitioner was granted interim bail subject to the condition of executing a personal bond for a sum of Rs.10,000 with two sureties each. The Judge further held that, interim bail shall be subject to the result of the police custody petition pending before magistrate Court.

New Delhi: I.N.D.I.A bloc MPs gathered in the Parliament complex on Monday in a show of strength on the first day of the first session of the 18th Lok Sabha, holding copies of the Constitution and raising slogans on “saving democracy”.

Opposition leaders, including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, party leader Rahul Gandhi, Trinamool Congress’ Sudip Bandyopadhyay, DMK’s TR Baalu, among others assembled at the spot where the Gandhi statue once stood in the Parliament complex. Former Congress president Sonia Gandhi also joined the MPs.

Holding copies of the Constitution in their hands, they raised slogans such as “long live Constitution”, “we will save Constitution”, “save our democracy”.

Rahul Gandhi said they would not allow the Constitution to be “attacked” by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. “This attack is not acceptable to us and that is why we held the Constitution and took oath,” he said. “Our message is reaching the public and no power can touch the Constitution of India and we will protect it,” Gandhi added.

Congress leader KC Venugopal said the I.N.D.I.A bloc leaders entered the 18th Lok Sabha with Mahatma Gandhi’s blessings.

“The I.N.D.I.A alliance enters the 18th Lok Sabha with Bapu’s blessings and with a fresh resolve to give voice to people’s issues, challenges, hopes and aspirations in Parliament and keep the government in check every single minute,” he said in a post on X. “We are the guardians of democracy. We are committed to protecting and upholding the Constitution. We are united in our resolve to fight against injustice,” Venugopal said.

The Gandhi statue, which was a popular protest site for MPs, was recently relocated along with 14 other statues that dotted the complex to a new spot named Prerna Sthal.

Several opposition parties have claimed that the mandate of 2024 Lok Sabha elections was against the ruling BJP, even though it was able to form the government with support of other parties.

The I.N.D.I.A bloc has also claimed that the results show that the people have backed the opposition parties to “save the Constitution”.

The first session of the 18th Lok Sabha began Monday morning. The newly elected members will be sworn in as members of the Lower House on Monday and Tuesday.

The Lok Sabha Speaker will be elected on June 26 and President Droupadi Murmu’s address to joint sitting of both the Houses is scheduled for June 27.

The debate on the Motion of Thanks to the President’s Address will begin on June 28. The prime minister is expected to respond to the debate on July 2 or 3.

UN warns of apocalyptic consequences if Israel drags Lebanon into war

The United Nations humanitarian chief Martin Griffiths warns of “apocalyptic” consequences if Israel’s military campaign in the Gaza Strip spills into Lebanon.

Griffiths made the warning in Geneva on Wednesday as escalating strikes between Lebanon’s resistance movement Hezbollah and Israel sparked fears of another conflict in the region.

“We are worried about the potential for further tragedy and deaths,” he said. “It’s potentially apocalyptic.”

A war involving Lebanon, Griffiths said, “will draw in Syria… it will draw in others. It’s very alarming.”

And “it will of course have an impact on Gaza; of course it will have an impact on the West Bank.”

He said Israel’s bloodiest-ever military campaign in the Gaza Strip, which is in its eighth month now, “has taught us a new level of tragedy and cruelty.”

The regime’s military forces have so far killed more than 37,700 Palestinians in Gaza.

“But we are all worried that it may only be the beginning,” said Griffiths.

On Monday, Israel’s prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the current phase of war with the Hamas resistance movement is winding down, setting the stage for the military to send more forces to its northern border.

Netanyahu made the threat as the regime’s forces remain mired in the conflict the regime started on October 7, 2023.

Region cannot afford another war: EU’s Borrel

European Union foreign policy Chief Josep Borell also raised the alarm about a possible conflict between Israel and Lebanon, calling for “immediate de-escalation” of tensions along the border.

Borell said he discussed the matter with Lebanese Foreign Minister Bou Habib on Wednesday.

He wrote on X that they “discussed how to ensure immediate de-escalation across the Blue Line & how to reinforce efforts towards a political solution acceptable to all.”

“Lebanon, Israel and the region cannot afford another war,” he said. “The EU would be affected too.”

Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka along with other ministers laid the foundation stone for the drinking water supply improvement scheme in Kothagudem.

Kothagudem: Efforts will be made to establish an Information Technology (IT) Hub in Kothagudem town, Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka said here on Thursday.

The matter would be discussed with the SCCL management seeking to arrange the required land for the construction of an IT Hub. Similarly IT Minister D Sridhar Babu would be apprised about the necessity of setting up an IT Hub here for the development of Kothagudem as a tier-II city, he said, also announcing that the State government was planning a supercritical thermal power project (SCTPP) in Ramagundam as there enough land, water and coal were available. A decision with regard to the project would soon be taken, he said.

The Deputy Chief Minister along with district in-charge minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy, ministers Tummala Nageswara Rao and Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy laid the foundation stone for a drinking water supply improvement scheme here on Thursday. Addressing the gathering later, he said the Congress government was committed to deliver its promise of the crop loan waiver before August. The government had deposited Rs.7,500 crore in the farmers’ account at once towards Rythu Bandhu and in a similar way, the crop loan would be waived off.

With regard to Rythu Bharosa, the government was collecting public opinion about beneficiary selection and how it should be distributed. After formulating the procedures, the matter would be discussed in the Assembly to make a law as the government did not want to waste the public money, Vikramarka noted.

He promised to look into the possibility of forming a municipal corporation by connecting Kothagudem and Paloncha towns by taking the matter to the notice of the State Cabinet. He also assured to complete the pending bypass road in Kothagudem. The land acquisition for the construction of the bypass road was over and Roads and Buildings Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy had sanctioned funds for the construction of a road over bridge as part of the bypass road, Vikramarka revealed.

The government had identified all the projects which could be completed within six months, in one year, in three years and in a five year period to ensure irrigation facilities to farmers. The projects would be completed in order of priority, he added.

Several Palestinians were also injured by Israeli Occupation forces’ gunfire early Thursday in the city, pro-Palestinian Roya News reported.

The Israeli Occupation deployed military reinforcements, including dozens of snipers positioned on rooftops of commercial buildings, homes, and throughout the city’s central areas. This led to violent clashes and explosions echoing across Jenin.

Prior to this, Israeli Occupation special forces infiltrated the city, arresting former prisoners Jamal Hawil, Jamal Zubeidi, and Abdul Ghani Abu Al-Hayja at the camp entrance.

Intense confrontations erupted around Jenin Cinema, Al-Dakhiliya roundabout, and the edges of Jenin camp. Soldiers fired tear gas canisters into the yard of Jenin Governmental Hospital and shot at residents and their vehicles.
