Gangs of Kalapather: Fight for supremacy turns this Hyderabad neighbourhood into cauldron of crime

Hyderabad: Its fight for supremacy and revenge narratives that have turned Kalapather in the old city into a cauldron of crime. With one murder last week and two other attempts to eliminate opponents in a single night, the rowdy gangs of Kalapather are back in news.

Sources in the police point out that two gangs – led by Asad and Ashwaq, both having rowdy sheets in Kalapather police stations – were at loggerheads and their battle for dominance was spilling into violence on the old city streets. In fact, Asad along with two other associates, was arrested by police in January 2024 for conspiring to kill Ashwaq.

“It is a fight for supremacy and dominance in that area. Revenge murders are part of the fight for supremacy as both the gangs are trying to outwit the other,” said an official who earlier worked with Hyderabad Commissioner’s Task Force.

For at least three decades, different gangs vied for supremacy over localities falling in Kalapather, Falaknuma, Mailardevpally, Shahalibanda and Kamatipura police station limits. Rowdy sheeters such as Ayub Khan, Adil, Ashwaq, Rustum, Waseem, Shahnoor Ghazi, Younus had engaged in various crimes including bodily, property and narcotics offences in these areas.

In early 2002, Ayub Khan shot to notoriety after allegedly killing an advocate. Around same time, his associate, Ashwaq formed another gang and both carried out different tasks. Rowdy elements from the south west areas of the city such as Habeebnagar and Nampally started supporting small time rowdy sheeters and attempted to establish their base here.

“For dominance in the area, many bodily offences including murders took place. The gangs indulge in settling small disputes, looting gambling den, betting organizers and hawala operators. They extort money from brothel houses, PDS rice and wheat smugglers, and collect mamools from different hotels and shops,” said a police official who previously worked in old city.

While Ayub Khan reportedly reformed himself over a period of time and his associates were either killed or absconding, the vacuum was immediately filled by Ashwaq, Shahnoor Ghazi, Younus, Asad and Anwar.

“Shahnoor Ghazi was killed by his rivals. His associates later killed a couple of persons who were involved in the killing of Ghazi. At least five persons from both gangs were murdered,” said the official.

The Kalapather belt covering a radius of around 4 km has several slums and with numerous lanes and narrow by lanes making it convenient for the rowdy elements to hoodwink the police. “Only technology will not help in checking the gangs. A robust informer network should be developed and information gathered regularly about their movement,” said an ACP who previously worked as SHO Kalapather.

New York: Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama arrived in New York after a halt in Switzerland’s Zurich on Saturday.

The members of the Tibetan community and his well-wishers welcomed the Dalai Lama HHDL on his arrival in New York City on Sunday.

Dalai Lama left for Delhi from Dharamshala on Friday to head to the US for his knee surgery.

During his stop in Switzerland, he received a traditional Tibetan welcome on his arrival at a hotel in Zurich. His well-wishers and guests watched as the Dalai Lama walked through the hotel lobby. He greeted an old friend as he walked through the hotel lobby in Zurich.

Thousands of Tibetans and well-wishers with bouquets waited on the road to welcome the Dalai Lama as he arrived at his hotel in Zurich. Tibetan artistes performed traditional songs and dances as they waited for him to arrive at the hotel.

While he was leaving from Dharamshala, the leadership of the Central Tibetan Administration, including Speaker Khenpo Sonam Tenphel, Sikyong Penpa Tsering, Deputy Speaker Dolma Tsering Teykhang, Tibetan Justice Commissioner Tenzin Lungtok, DIIR Kalon Norzin Dolma, Election and Public Service Commissioner Wangdu Tsering Pesur, Standing Committee Members of the Tibetan Parliament in Exile, and Secretaries of CTA Departments and Offices, gathered at Dalai Lama’s official residence to see him off.

Moreover, many Tibetans gathered at the Kangra Airport to wish him well. Hundreds of Tibetans and devotees also thronged the streets to pay obeisance to the spiritual leader.

Last week, a bipartisan US Congressional delegation led by Congressman Michael McCaul met with the Dalai Lama in Dharamshala.

Former US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who was part of the delegation, “strongly reaffirmed” Congressional support for the people of Tibet.

She also launched a broadside against Xi Jinping, stating that while the legacy of the Tibetan spiritual leader will live forever, the Chinese President will be gone in a few years.

Ramoji Rao's Family Donates Rs 10 Crore For Development Of Amaravati

“Ramoji Rao was not a person, he was an institution,” said Mr Naidu (File)

Vijayawada:

The family of late media baron Ch Ramoji Rao on Thursday donated Rs 10 crore to the Andhra Pradesh government for the development of Amaravati city.

They handed over the cheque to Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu at a state event organised on the outskirts of Vijayawada to commemorate Ramoji Rao’s life, legacy and contributions.

Addressing the public meeting organised in honour of the Eenadu Group founder, the Chief Minister stated that a road will be named as Ramoji Rao Marg in Amaravati.

“Ramoji Rao was not a person, he was an institution. He was an uncompromising fighter who worked for the betterment of the society…” said Mr Naidu.

In recognition of his services to the Telugu society and country, he said a centre named Ramoji Vignan Kendra will be set up in Amaravati, which will host top events.

Mr Naidu also promised to establish Chitra Nagari in port city Visakhapatnam, which will be a facility for film shooting.

The family members of Ramoji Rao, several ministers, Telugu film personalities and other dignitaries participated in the event to pay their tributes to the multi-faceted personality.

According to Mr Naidu, Mr Rao had started a magazine called Annadata in 1969 before launching the Eenadu Telugu newspaper in Visakhapatnam in 1974.

From a single edition newspaper, Mr Naidu said Ramoji Rao had transformed Eenadu into a 22-edition giant and went on to build several highly successful business ventures, including the Ramoji Film City (RFC) in Hyderabad.

When everyone thought there was no alternative to the Congress party in undivided Andhra Pradesh, Naidu said Ramoji Rao had played a key role in bringing the N T Rama Rao-founded TDP to power in the 1980s.

The CM added that Ramoji Rao had mooted the idea of naming Andhra Pradesh’s greenfield capital as Amaravati after a lot of research.

Congress, BJP conspiring to privatise Singareni coal mines, says KTR

Congress, BJP conspiring to privatise Singareni coal mines, says KTR

Hyderabad: BRS working president KT Rama Rao charged the Congress and the BJP of colluding with each other and auctioning Telangana’s coal mines to privatise the Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL). Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy had joined hands with the BJP-led goverment at the Centre to undermine the profitable State-run enterprise, he said.

“By not allocating coal mines, they aim to push Singareni into losses and eventually privatise the company. Every Singareni worker understands the conspiracy by the Congress and the BJP whose representatives were seen smiling at the auction of coal mines,” he said.

In a meeting with the leaders of BRS and its affiliated Telangana Boggu Gani Karmika Sangham (TGBKS) from the Singareni area at Telangana Bhavan on Thursday, Rama Rao remembered the role of employees and workers of Singareni and other public sector organisation in the Telangana Statehood movement. He recalled that during the Sakala Janula Samme, the stalling of operations in Singareni mines affected coal supplies to five States, grabbing the attention of the entire nation.

He stated that strengthening public sector undertakings has always been a policy of the BRS. “We resisted private pressures and opted for LIC for implementing Rythu Bima and other life insurance coverage schemes. Similarly, we assigning works to PSUs like BHEL for building thermal power and irrigation projects, over private entities,” he noted.

Rama Rao said during the BRS’s nine and a half years regime, they worked tirelessly for Singareni’s development and expansion. He said former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao opposed auction of coal mines in Telangana for over nine years. “Even when the Central government auctioned two mines to private companies, we could successfully stop them from mining,” he added.

The BRS working president criticised both the Congress and the BJP over their attempts to privatise the Singareni coal mines within a short span of coming to power. “They put Telangana coal mines up for auction under the illusion that Telangana’s voice is absent in Parliament. But BRS has always fought for Singareni and will continue its fight notwithstanding its presence in the Parliament,” he said. He vowed that the BRS would safeguard the interests of Singareni workers under any circumstances.

Huge competition for engineering seats at evening colleges in Hyderabad

Working professionals eye on engineering seats at evening colleges for upskilling.

Huge competition for engineering seats at evening colleges in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: Securing a seat in evening engineering colleges is not going to be a cake walk anymore. Amid increasing demand for undergraduate engineering programmes among working professionals, the engineering colleges have introduced a specialized common entrance test, which is scheduled for July 21.

This is for the first time a test is being conducted and on the basis of merit secured in it, candidates will be admitted to undergraduate programmes offered by six engineering colleges for the academic year 2024-25.

In addition to Osmania University College of Engineering (OUCE), this year, five private engineering colleges have announced lateral entry admissions into second-year engineering. The colleges will hold classes from 6 pm to 9.30 pm during weekdays and day long theory and practical classes on Sundays.

Inset

Given the huge demand for up-skilling and reskilling of the workforce, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) offered engineering programmes for working professionals last year. In response to this decision, 12 engineering colleges in the State got a nod from the AICTE to offer engineering courses for working professionals during the academic year 2023-24. However, only OUCE, an autonomous college, admitted working professionals into its programmes on the basis of merit secured in the qualifying examination.

“This time, it has been decided to hold a common entrance test for working professionals. Last time, four candidates competed for one seat in OUCE. This time, we are anticipating more competition,” said Prof. P Chandra Sekhar, Principal OUCE and Convener CET.

Working professionals with a diploma in engineering with minimum one year full time or regular work experience is a must for admission. They should also be working in a registered industry or organization located less than 100 km radius from the admitted institution. Interested candidates can submit applications on the website https://www.uceou.edu/

Blog: Why I, A Father Of Two, Am Terrified Of Dating Apps

Add image caption here

Pexel/Magda Ehlers

“Stay away from swipe-right love.”

That is quite an obvious statement from someone who is in his early fifties and the father of two grown-up children, isn’t it? After all, one would expect that he (referring to myself in the fashionable third person), being the traditional Indian father he is, would obviously like to play matchmaker for his children and marry them off according to his own wishes.

However, as a strong advocate of love marriage and all that it stands for, I also feel morally obliged to support my children’s choices, even if that means using dating apps to find love. But do I really like the idea of dating apps? Not anymore it seems, and for several valid reasons.

A Skewed Field

The gender ratio on dating apps in India and across the world is alarmingly skewed. According to various estimates, nearly 75-90% of all users on dating apps in India are men. Yes, all men. The situation is marginally better elsewhere, but only marginally. Just imagine: so many men pursuing a few good women, attempting to impress them in the most bizarre ways imaginable and become the ‘chosen few’. How toxic such an environment would be! No doubt there are some genuine contenders, but among them, there are also frustrated individuals, the weird, the creepy, the pretentious, the aggressive, the bold, and the obscene ones -all vying to present their best (read: fake) selves to garner attention. Such a scenario should deter anyone.

So that’s a compelling argument I now use when discussing with my daughter why she should steer clear of dating apps forever.

But that is not all. A recent report by Mozilla Foundation reveals that “dating apps claim the more personal data you share, the more likely you are to find love. We have no way of knowing if that’s true. What we do know is that most dating apps fail spectacularly at protecting that information.”

How scary that is! Sample the kind of data you’re required to share: from pictures, videos, religious affiliations, political views and sexual preferences, to details of parents’ marital life and HIV test reports. Even biometric details to verify your identity. This is the volume of personal information you put out in the public domain, just to enter the dating arena. Worse still, it’s sold to advertisers who inundate you with incessant calls at the most inconvenient times. Privacy be damned. And data protection? Who cares?

So Much For Often, Nothing

Some apps even collect your video chats. Imagine your video conversation with a potential date where you try to impress them, only to slip up and say something completely off-script. You end up portraying a false image, exaggerating traits that aren’t really you. And these moments, including some intimate ones, are stored somewhere. Often, they surface in the most unexpected ways-perhaps as a viral WhatsApp forward! Is finding a date that may not even materialise worth such an ordeal?

Perhaps most people worldwide are already aware of the risks of modern swipe-right love and try to convince their children to steer clear of dating apps. A New York Times report in March this year claiming that companies behind popular dating apps like Tinder and Bumble were facing challenges was no surprise. “As online dating became as easy as swiping a finger across your phone screen, the companies who own apps like Tinder and Bumble became Wall Street darlings. But about a decade later, those platforms are now struggling to live up to expectations, and investors have grown frustrated and eager for something new,” it said.

The report further adds that “Match Group and Bumble – which make up nearly the entire industry by market share – have lost more than $40 billion in market value since 2021. Even in an age when the apps are a staple on people’s smartphones, the two companies are laying off workers and reporting lacklustre revenue growth.”

Somehow, I have managed to convince myself that I will be able to persuade my children to ditch dating apps. Brick-and-mortar love – if I may call it that – is what I prefer over the elusive promises made online. If you’re still not convinced, read some more to build a solid case for yourself.

A disclosure though: like most people in India well in their fifties, I never really ventured out to seek a date as I grew older. And thus, I have never used these apps. My understanding of their functioning comes entirely from secondary sources.

Telangana: Senior government doctors threaten to launch indefinite strike

Hyderabad: The Telangana Teaching Government Doctors Association (TTGDA), comprising senior faculty in government teaching hospitals, on Thursday issued an ultimatum to the State government to go on an indefinite strike and halt all medical services, if it continues to put unnecessary pressure on caregivers at Government General and Teaching Hospital, Nalgonda.

“If the State government does not do away with unnecessary pressure tactics, then we will be left with no options but to stop all the medical services in teaching hospitals across Telangana. And, if need be, we will also launch a massive indefinite medical strike in all teaching hospitals of Telangana,” the senior office bearers of TTGDA said.

As a mark of protest, the teaching faculty at all the general and teaching hospitals in Telangana will wear black badges while they report to their routine duties on Friday.

The senior doctors from TTGDA are alleging harassment of caregivers at Government General Hospital, Nalgonda by designated district officials, under the garb of daily surprise checks.

“Nalgonda Government hospital already faces problems due to manpower and shortage of infrastructure. Already, the caregivers at this hospital are under stress, which is being made worse by the daily harassment from district officials,” TTGDA said.

A few days ago, the Nalgonda District Collector, who had conducted a surprise inspection of the hospital, decided to conduct surprise checks of the hospital on a daily basis. To this effect, the Collector designated senior District Level Officers from various departments to conduct surprise inspections of the hospital and even released a month-long time table, till August, 2024, that lists-out the names of the district officials who will conduct the inspections.
