No challenge with Iran on new anti-terror op.: Pak minister

Asif made the remarks in an interview with a Pakistani news channel on Thursday as he was elaborating on Operation Azm-e-Istehkam or Resolve for Stability aimed at effectively dealing with terrorism and extremism, according to local Iranian media.

According to Press TV, he said Pakistan is determined to uproot terrorism in its southwestern border areas and called for further cooperation of the interim Afghan government in anti-terrorism campaign in border areas.

The problem of terrorism has not been resolved and has adversely affected Pakistan’s relations with Afghanistan, the defense chief added.

He noted that Islamabad does not see effective cooperation from its western neighbor as the interim Afghan government refrains from taking necessary steps to deal with terrorism along the common borders.

Asif emphasized that the new anti-terrorism operation will focus on targeting those who disrupt security and mastermind terrorist attacks and will be concentrated in the Pakistani provinces of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan that border Afghanistan to destroy the hideouts of terrorists.

The minister expounded that the operation would be slightly different from the previous ones, adding that action would be taken based on classified information.

He maintained that the operation had no political motives.

“Its sole purpose is to counter the recent surge in terrorism, and that is why it should be supported by everyone.”

The new campaign is the latest in a series of military operations that Pakistan has launched with the intent of crushing armed violence, terrorism and extremism since 2007. The new operation is expected to focus on domestic security threats and militants crossing over from Afghanistan.

Hezbollah hits Israeli positions near Lebanon's borders

In a statement on Wednesday, Hezbollah announced that its fighters targeted buildings used by enemy soldiers in the Al-Metula settlement with appropriate weapons, hitting them directly which resulted in their catching fire, and resulting in casualties among those inside, leaving them killed and injured, reported by IRNA, citing Beirut-based Al Manar TV Network.

It added that the attacks were in response to the “Israeli” enemy’s attacks on the southern villages and the safe homes, particularly targeting buildings in the towns of Khiam and Kfar Shuba.

Also, the Islamic Resistance fighters targeted the surveillance equipment in the vicinity of the Birket Risha site with appropriate weapons, hitting it directly and destroying it.

Regional resistance groups, including Hezbollah, the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, and Yemen’s Ansarullah, have declared that they will continue their attacks on the Israeli military bases in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza since the start of the Israeli regime’s genocidal war in the enclave last October.

Euro 2024: Belgium advances to knockouts with goalless draw against Ukraine

Stuttgart: Belgium are through to the round of 16 at UEFA EURO 2024 after finishing as Group E runners-up with a 0-0 draw with Ukraine, whose hopes of progress ended with the goalless ending here on Wednesday night.

Both teams made a nervy start at the Stuttgart Arena, with plenty at stake in the group as all four teams began the evening level on three points apiece.

Belgium captain Kevin De Bruyne created the first clear chance of the game, embarking on a mazy run before threading a fine through ball to Romelu Lukaku, who was unable to properly connect with his shot from close range, allowing Ukraine goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin to gather easily.

De Bruyne then went close himself as he attempted to catch Trubin out at his near post with a cheeky free-kick, but his effort whistled narrowly wide.

The Red Devils continued to dominate possession in the second half, yet Ukraine held firm, Lukaku again trying his luck with a curling effort which Trubin saved.

Ukraine needed a goal, and they made a triple substitution in the 70th minute as they threw everything at unlocking the Belgian defence in search of victory. But it was Belgium who still showed the most threat, Yannick Carrasco blasting a shot which was well palmed away.

Artem Dovbyk’s eyes lit up with ten minutes to go as he received the ball in space on the edge of the box, but the Ukraine forward could only fire into the side netting as time began to tick away.

In the final moments, Georgiy Sudakov embarked on a brilliant solo run. The goal seemed there for the taking, yet his shot from just inside the box lacked power, and once again there was no way through for Ukraine.

With Slovakia and Romania drawing 1-1 in the group’s other match, all the teams ended on four points. Belgium finished second to Romania on goals scored, while Ukraine came fourth due to having the worst goal difference.

SpaceX bags $843 mn NASA contract, to deorbit International Space Station

International Space Station

New Delhi: Elon Musk‘s SpaceX has won a $843 million NASA contract to prepare for the safe and responsible deorbit of the International Space Station (ISS) in a controlled manner after the end of its operational life in 2030.

As part of the contract, SpaceX will develop and deliver the US Deorbit Vehicle that will provide the capability to deorbit the space station and ensure avoidance of risk to populated areas.

“Selecting a US Deorbit Vehicle for the International Space Station will help NASA and its international partners ensure a safe and responsible transition in low Earth orbit at the end of station operations,” said Ken Bowersox, associate administrator for Space Operations Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington.

While SpaceX will make the deorbit spacecraft, NASA will operate it throughout its mission. In addition to the space station, it is expected to destructively break up as part of the re-entry process.

The ISS has seen astronauts from CSA (Canadian Space Agency), ESA (European Space Agency), JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency), NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration), and State Space Corporation Roscosmos, since 1998. Each agency was responsible for managing and controlling the hardware it provided.

While the US, Japan, Canada, and the participating countries of ESA have committed to operating the station through 2030, Russia has committed to continued station operations through at least 2028.

The ISS is currently in its 24th year of continuous crewed operations, and more than 3,300 experiments have, to date, been conducted in microgravity.

Seoul: A suspected hypersonic missile launched by North Korea exploded in flight on Wednesday, South Korea‘s military said, as North Korea protests the regional deployment of a US aircraft carrier for a military drill with South Korea and Japan.

Later on Wednesday, South Korea conducted live-fire drills along its disputed western sea boundary with North Korea, its first since it suspended a 2018 agreement with the North aimed at reducing frontline military tensions in early June.

The North Korean missile was launched at about 5.30 am and aimed toward the North’s eastern waters before the failure, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said. Missile fragments were scattered in the water up to 250 km from the launch site near North Korea’s capital, it said. No damage was immediately reported.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff said it believes the weapon was a solid-fuelled hypersonic missile. The launch generated more smoke than normal launches, possibly because of an engine fault, it told South Korean reporters at a background briefing. The contents of the briefing were shared with foreign media.

In a three-way phone call, senior diplomats from South Korea, the US and Japan condemned the missile launch as a violation of UN resolutions and agreed to maintain close coordination in response to North Korean threats, according to South Korea’s Foreign Ministry.

North Korea has performed a series of hypersonic missile tests since 2021 in an apparent effort to acquire an ability to penetrate its rivals’ missile defence shields. Foreign experts question whether the missiles have achieved their desired speed and maneuverability during the test flights.

In recent years, it has also been developing more missiles that use solid propellants, Launches of such missiles are harder to detect than liquid-propellant missiles, which must be fuelled before liftoff. Wednesday’s missile test came as the rival Koreas are engaged in Cold War-style psychological warfare using balloons and loudspeaker broadcasts.

Nakhala: Late Iran president, FM have major role in victories of resistance

The chief of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad movement says late Iranian President Ebrahim Raeisi and former Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian played a major role in victories scored by the resistance factions.

“Martyr Raeisi and martyr Amir-Abdollahian scored significant gains for the resistance and the region and brought the positions of various countries closer to Palestine,” Ziad al-Nakhaleh said at a ceremony held in Tehran on Thursday.

“This was a gain for Palestine and the entire region,” he told the event to mark the 40th day since the passing of President Raeisi in a helicopter crash, hailing the country for taking the upheaval in its stride with fortitude and composure.

Referring to Israel’s ongoing war on Gaza, Nakhaleh said President Raeisi defended Palestine in all international forums, adding his statements are still “effective.”

“We will not forget the positions of the Iranian president and his martyred foreign minister in support of Palestine,” he added.

The helicopter carrying president Raeisi and his entourage crashed when it was on its way to Tabriz, the capital of Iran’s East Azarbaijan province.

Amir-Abdollahian along with Friday Prayers leader of Tabriz city Mohammad Ali Al-e Hashem, and Malek Rahmati, the governor of East Azarbaijan Province, as well as crew members and a bodyguard also lost their lives in the crash.

The incident engulfed Iran in shock and grief and generated a groundswell of support and solidarity from Muslims and non-Muslims across the world.

Nakhaleh also thanked Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and Iran’s officials and nation for their unflinching support for the Palestinian people and resistance.

“God willing, we will continue together [on the path to] towards the victory of al-Quds and Palestine,” al-Nakhaleh added.

Israel launched the war on Gaza on October 7 after the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas waged the surprise Operation Al-Aqsa Storm against the occupying entity in response to the Israeli regime’s decades-long campaign of bloodletting and devastation against Palestinians.

Since the start of the offensive, the Tel Aviv regime has killed at least 37,765 Palestinians and injured over 86,429. Thousands more are also missing and presumed dead under rubble.
