In Blow For Erdogan, Turkey Opposition Secures Victory In Key Local Elections

In Blow For Erdogan, Turkey Opposition Secures Victory In Key Local Elections

The CHP led nationwide by almost 1% of the votes, a first in 35 years, the results showed.

Turks dealt President Tayyip Erdogan and his party their biggest electoral blow on Sunday in a nationwide local vote that reasserted the opposition as a political force and reinforced Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu as the president’s chief rival.

With most of the votes counted, Imamoglu led by 10 percentage points in the mayoral race in Istanbul, Turkey’s largest city, while his Republican People’s Party (CHP) retained Ankara and gained 15 other mayoral seats in cities nationwide.

It marked the worst defeat for Erdogan and his AK Party (AKP) in their more than two decades in power, and could signal a change in the country’s divided political landscape. Erdogan called it a “turning point” in a post-midnight address.

He and the AKP fared worse than opinion polls predicted due to soaring inflation, dissatisfied Islamist voters and, in Istanbul, Imamoglu’s appeal beyond the CHP’s secular base, analysts said.

“Those who do not understand the nation’s message will eventually lose,” Imamoglu, 53, told thousands of jubilant supporters late on Sunday, some of them chanting for Erdogan to resign.

“Tonight, 16 million Istanbul citizens sent a message to both our rivals and the president,” said the former businessman, who entered politics in 2008 and is now widely touted as a likely presidential challenger.

Erdogan, who in the 1990s was also mayor of his hometown Istanbul, had campaigned hard ahead of the municipal elections, which analysts described as a gauge of both his support and the opposition’s durability.

Addressing crowds gathered at AKP headquarters in Ankara, the capital, Erdogan said his alliance had “lost altitude” across the nation and will take steps to address the message from voters.

“If we made a mistake, we will fix it” in the years ahead, he said. “If we have anything missing, we will complete it.”

Elsewhere in Ankara, thousands more supporters had earlier waved Turkish and party flags for a speech by reelected CHP Mayor Mansur Yavas, who trounced his AKP challenger in another disappointment for Erdogan.

According to 92.92% of ballot boxes opened in Istanbul, Europe’s largest city and the country’s economic engine, Imamoglu had 50.92% support compared with 40.05% for AKP challenger Murat Kurum, a former minister in Erdogan’s national government.

Polls had predicted a tight contest in Istanbul and possible CHP losses across the country.

Yet partial official results reported by state-run Anadolu Agency showed AKP and its main ally giving up mayoralties in 19 key municipalities including big cities Bursa and Balikesir in the industrialised northwest, possibly reflecting strains on wage earners.

The CHP led nationwide by almost 1% of the votes, a first in 35 years, the results showed.

Mert Arslanalp, assistant professor of political science at Istanbul’s Bogazici University, said it was Erdogan’s “severest election defeat” since coming to national power in 2002.

“Imamoglu demonstrated he could reach across the deep socio-political divisions that define Turkey’s opposition electorate even without their institutional support,” he said. “This makes him the most politically competitive rival to Erdogan’s regime.”

IMAMOGLU’S RISE

In 2019, Imamoglu had dealt Erdogan a sharp electoral blow when he first won Istanbul, ending 25 years of rule in the city by AKP and its Islamist predecessors, including Erdogan’s own run as its mayor in the 1990s. CHP also won Ankara that year.

The president struck back in 2023 by securing reelection and a parliamentary majority with his nationalist allies, despite a years-long cost-of-living crisis.

Analysts said the economic strains, including nearly 70% inflation and a slowdown in growth brought on by an aggressive monetary-tightening regime, moved voters to punish AKP this time.

“The economy was the decisive factor,” said Hakan Akbas, a senior adviser at the Albright Stonebridge Group. “Turkish people demanded change and Imamoglu is now the default nemesis to President Erdogan.”

Erdogan said ending the second election cycle in less than a year will itself bring a reprive for the economy.

In front of the Istanbul Municipality building, flag-waving supporters said they wanted to see Imamoglu challenge Erdogan for the presidency in the future.

“We are very happy. I love him so much. We would like to see him as president,” said Esra, a housewife.

Rising popular support for the Islamist New Welfare Party, which took an even more hardline stance than Erdogan against Israel over the Gaza conflict, also sapped AKP support. The party took Sanliurfa from an AKP incumbant in the southeast.

Imamoglu was reelected despite the collapse of the opposition alliance that failed to topple Erdogan last year.

The main pro-Kurdish party, which backed Imamoglu in 2019, fielded its own candidate under the DEM banner in Istanbul this time. But many Kurds put aside party loyalty and voted for him again, the results suggest.

In the mainly Kurdish southeast, DEM reaffirmed its strength, winning 10 provinces. Following previous elections, the state has replaced pro-Kurdish mayors with state-appointed “trustees” following previous elections over alleged militant ties.

Violence erupted earlier in the day, including one incident in the southeast in clashes by groups armed with guns, sticks and stones, killing one and wounding 11. In another, one neighbourhood official, or “muhtar”, candidate was killed and four people were wounded in a fight, Anadolu reported.

Several others were hurt in other incidents while one person was shot dead and two were wounded overnight ahead of the vote in Bursa, the Demiroren news agency reported.

O Panneerselvam Gets 'Jackfruit' As Symbol To Contest Lok Sabha Polls

O Panneerselvam Gets 'Jackfruit' As Symbol To Contest Lok Sabha Polls

OPS is in alliance with the BJP and is contesting as an independent.

Rameswaram:

Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and ousted AIADMK leader O Panneerselvam has been allotted the ‘jackfruit’ symbol to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections from Ramanathapuram seat.

The symbol was allotted through a lottery organised at the district collectorate in Ramanathapuram on Saturday.

On Sunday, Panneerselvam, who is contesting the polls as an independent, posed with a ‘jackfruit’ to officially announce the allotment of the symbol at a public meeting in Thiruvadanai.

OPS is in alliance with the BJP and is contesting the seat as an independent after losing a case in Madras High Court for retaining the flag and letterhead of the AIADMK.

The ‘jackfruit’ symbol was allotted through a drawing of lots at the district collectorate on Saturday. The former CM will face four other candidates of the same name in Ramanathapuram.

MP Ravindranath, Thiruvadanai Union Secretary Senkai Rajan, Aani Muthu Vetrivelan, KK Pandi, Selvanayakam, BJP spiritual wing state secretary Guruji and other alliance party executives were present.

Earlier, Panneerselvam (OPS) filed his nomination earlier, on Monday, March 25. He submitted his nomination to Ramanathapuram District Collector P Vishnuchandran.

There are 39 Lok Sabha constituencies in Tamil Nadu. The state is voting on April 19 in a single phase of polling.

During the 2019 general elections, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-led Secular Progressive Alliance, which comprised INC, VCK, MDMK, CPI, CPI(M), IUML, MMK, KMDK, TVK, and AIFB, registered a landslide victory by winning 38 of the 39 seats.

The election for 543 Lok Sabha seats in the country will be held in seven phases starting April 19.

Pak Man Strangles Sister In Father's Presence, Brother Films The Murder

Pak Man Strangles Sister In Father's Presence, Brother Films The Murder

The motive for the murder has not yet been established. (Representational)

A Pakistani man who allegedly filmed his brother strangling their sister to death has been arrested as part of the latest “honour” killing that has outraged the country, police said Sunday.

Maria Bibi, 22, was killed overnight on March 17, allegedly by her brother Muhammad Faisal and in the presence of her father Abdul Sattar, near Toba Tek Singh town in the central-eastern province of Punjab.

A video filmed by the woman’s other brother Shehbaz, and which has gone viral, appears to show Faisal strangling the girl on a bed in the family home while their father sat nearby.

At one point, the video appears to show Shehbaz saying “father, tell him to let go”, but is rebuffed as his brother continues to strangle the motionless body for more than two minutes.

When Faisal is done, his father offers him water to drink.

“The police found out on March 24 that the girl had not died of natural causes. We registered a case, becoming the complainants ourselves,” Ata Ullah, a police official in Toba Tek Singh told AFP by phone.

Sattar and Faisal were immediately arrested, while Shehbaz was arrested on Saturday evening to determine the extent of his involvement, the officer said.

The murder had all the hallmarks of an “honour” killing, he added. Shehbaz’s wife, who also appears in the video, has also been arrested.

Much of Pakistani society operates under a strict code of “honour”, with women beholden to their male relatives over choices around education, employment and who they can marry.

Hundreds of women are killed by men in Pakistan every year for allegedly breaching this code.

According to the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, 316 “honour” crimes against women were recorded in the country in 2022.

But many cases go unreported, as families tend to protect the murderers – often male relatives.

The motive for the murder has not yet been established.

Police said that Faisal, the killer, allegedly caught his sister talking on a video call with an unknown man on several occasions.

The chief minister of Punjab province, Maryam Nawaz, has designated the matter as “high-profile”, a term used for cases of public interest, although the legal system still allows for men to murder women with impunity.

Turkey's Erdogan calls local elections results 'turning point' for his party

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who leads the Justice and Development (AK) Party, conceded on Monday that his ruling alliance did not achieve the desired result from Sunday’s local elections, adding they would carry out self-criticism and address shortcomings.

“March 31 is not an end for us, but a turning point. The Turkish nation has conveyed its messages to politicians by using the ballot box in this March 31 municipal elections,” he told his supporters after partial results indicated major gains by opposition parties in the nationwide elections.

“Nine months after our victory in the May 14-28 elections, unfortunately, we could not get the results we wanted and hoped for in the local vote. As the AK Party and the People’s Alliance, we had intensively prepared for this election race just like the previous ones,” he added.

The Turkish president stressed, “We will open-heartedly analyse the results of the March 31 elections within our party and make our self-criticism boldly.”

“However, we will not disrespect our nation’s decision in any way. We will avoid being stubborn, acting against the national will, and questioning the judgment of our nation, as we have done so far,” he added.

The Sunday vote results dashed Erdogan’s hopes of regaining the municipalities in Istanbul and Ankara that the opposition had won in 2019.

The opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) said it held on to Istanbul and Ankara in the elections while making gains in other traditionally AKP cities across the country.

Cristhian Stuani Boosts Girona European Dream With Late Betis Winner

Cristhian Stuani‘s last-gasp strike earned Girona an entertaining 3-2 win over Real Betis on Sunday, keeping the minnows on track for Champions League qualification. Michel Sanchez’s side had fallen badly out of form after running leaders Real Madrid close in the title race for most of the season, but Stuani’s goal clinched their third win in eight matches. Two David Lopez errors gifted Betis forward Willian Jose two goals to twice equalise goals from Girona forward Artem Dovbyk but veteran Uruguayan forward Stuani had the final say.

Girona, third, lead fourth place Athletic Bilbao by nine points before the Basque side visit Real Madrid later Sunday, while Atletico Madrid are 10 points behind in fifth and face Villarreal Monday.

With eight matches remaining Girona are seven points behind Los Blancos and two behind second-place Barcelona, who beat Las Palmas on Saturday.

“Until (qualification) is mathematically sealed, we’ll keep working and preparing for matches as if they were the last,” Stuani told DAZN.

“We’re on a good path, living through a historic year and let’s finish it in the best way we can.”

At a rainy Montilivi stadium, the two sides tussled intensely without creating much in the opening stages.

Eventually, the hosts were handed an opportunity to break the deadlock when Chadi Riad handled Dovbyk’s header.

The Ukrainian calmly slotted home from the spot to send his side ahead after 36 minutes, although they did not keep the lead for long.

In stoppage time, Lopez gave the ball way with a careless pass and Jose quickly lobbed home from over 30 yards out with Paulo Gazzaniga out of his goal.

Girona moved back in front after a good move, finished by Dovbyk. The striker slid home after Portu played him in on goal after 65 minutes, his 16th goal, putting him level with Madrid’s Jude Bellingham as La Liga’s top scorer.

Betis were soon back level after another Lopez mistake. Jose was again the beneficiary.

The defender stuck out a leg behind him to try and hook clear a cross but missed it and Jose controlled before firing home.

It seemed Girona were set to drop more points until Stuani finished acrobatically from close range in stoppage time after his first effort was saved.

“Luckily this goal at the end gave us the points,” added Stuani.

“It’s a unique feeling, difficult to explain, but the most important thing of all is three points for the team.”

Fans celebrated wildly in the pouring rain at the end as their European dream took one more step towards becoming a reality. It would be a remarkable achievement for a club only in the top flight for the fourth season in their history.

Benjamin Netanyahu Undergoes 'Successful' Hernia Surgery: Israel PM Office

Doctors discovered the hernia on Saturday during a routine checkup

Jerusalem:

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu underwent “successful” hernia surgery, his office said on Monday.

Netanyahu was “in good shape and beginning to recover”, his office said in a statement after the operation on Sunday evening, which was closely watched as the war with Hamas in the Gaza Strip nears six months.

Doctors discovered the hernia on Saturday during a routine checkup, and after consultations the decision was made for the premier to undergo surgery after completing his daily schedule, his office said.

Thousands of Israelis demonstrated in Jerusalem on Sunday evening to call for Netanyahu’s resignation and the release of Israeli hostages held in Gaza.

The war in Gaza was sparked by Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7 that resulted in about 1,160 deaths in Israel, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally of Israeli official figures.

Israel’s retaliatory campaign has so far killed at least 32,782 people, mostly women and children, the health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza said Sunday.
