BJP urges EC to take strict action against Rahul Gandhi for his ‘match-fixing’ remarks

Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi: The BJP on Monday urged the Election Commission to take the “strictest action” against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for the “match-fixing” remarks and other comments he made during an INDIA bloc rally here a day ago

A BJP delegation comprising Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and the party’s national general secretary Arun Kumar lodged the complaint against Gandhi with the poll panel.

Addressing the media after meeting Election Commission officials, Puri said the former Congress chief’s comments during the public meeting were “extremely objectionable” as they are not just in violation of the model code of conduct but could have serious implications.

“Addressing the public meeting yesterday, Rahul Gandhi said this (Lok Sabha polls) is a fixed match. He also said that the Central government has deployed its people in the Election Commission. He also raised questions on the credibility of the EVMs and said the Constitution will be cancelled (changed) after elections,” he told reporters.

“We urged the Election Commission to take strictest action against Rahul Gandhi, other Congress leaders and those of the opposition’s INDIA alliance,” Puri added.

Kumar accused Gandhi of repeatedly making such comments and said the Election Commission should consider censuring him from speaking during the Lok Sabha elections as the Congress leader would not stop making such remarks.

Erdogan reacts to Turkish elections result

In his first speech following the municipal elections on Sunday, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the Justice and Development Party’s (AK Party) chairperson, hailed what he called the victory of democracy.

“The victor of this election is democracy, the nation’s will, regardless of political views of the electorate,” he said.

“Thanks to the common sense of our citizens, Turkish democracy proved its maturity again. Elections are the most critical days of democracies and people voice their choice through ballots,” he said, Daily Sabah reported.

The president termed March 31 as “a turning point, not an end.”

Erdoğan, on the other hand, admitted that they could not achieve the desired result, especially nine months after the general and legislative elections, in which the AK Party emerged winner.

Israeli forces kidnap sister of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh: Report

Leader of the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas Ismail Haniyeh (file photo)

Israeli forces have reportedly kidnapped the sister of Ismail Haniyeh, the leader of the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas.

The regime’s police told AFP on Monday that Sabah Abdel Salam Haniyeh was taken into custody in the town of Tel el-Sabe (Tel Sheva) in the southern part of the occupied territories as part of an investigation also involving Israel’s internal spy agency, known as Shin Bet.

A police spokesman confirmed that the 57-year-old woman was Haniyeh’s sister, saying she is “suspected of having contact with Hamas operatives and identifying with the organization, while inciting and supporting acts of terrorism” in the occupied territories.

Haniyeh, who is based in the Qatari capital of Doha, is the head of the political bureau of Hamas.

His 22-year-old son, Hazim, was reportedly killed after Israeli warplanes launched a series of airstrikes in the besieged Gaza Strip in February.

Palestinian media, citing sources, said Israeli fighter jets have targeted Haniyeh’s family and relatives in the Gaza Strip multiple times since the Tel Aviv regime started its genocidal war against Palestinians early October last year, killing at least 14 of them in the process.

Israel launched the war on Gaza on October 7 after the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas waged the surprise Operation Al-Aqsa Storm against the occupying entity in response to the Israeli intensified violence against Palestinians.

Tel Aviv has also blocked water, food, and electricity to Gaza, plunging the coastal strip into a humanitarian crisis.

Since the start of the offensive, the Tel Aviv regime has killed 32,782 Palestinians and injured nearly 75,298 others.

US Bridge Collapse: Process Of Clearing Tangled Wreckage Begins

US Bridge Collapse: Process Of Clearing Tangled Wreckage Begins

Baltimore, US:

The complex process of clearing the tangled wreckage of the Baltimore bridge that collapsed spectacularly this week was set to begin Saturday with removal of a first section, officials said.

The collapse killed six people and blocked traffic through the busy US port.

“This is the first of many, many, many steps going forward,” Maryland transportation secretary Paul Wiedefeld said at a news briefing. “But it is a huge milestone as we start this process.”

Coast Guard Rear Admiral Shannon Gilreath said a huge floating crane — capable of lifting loads of more than 100 tons — was set to move one fallen section of the Francis Scott Key Bridge. He gave no details on its dimensions.

Maryland Governor Wes Moore said the piece in question was not one of those pinning down the massive container ship Dali, which lost power Tuesday and crashed into a bridge pillar, provoking the shockingly quick collapse.

Moore said it would “take days,” but teams would eventually “open up a temporary restricted channel” allowing more tugs, barges and other boats to enter the area to accelerate the clean-up operation.

For now, shipping traffic is at a standstill, affecting thousands of shippers, port workers and others, and the thousands of people who normally use the bridge each day have had to find alternative routes.

Removing the twisted steel remnants of the bridge and freeing the Dali is a top priority for local authorities, who say the collapse could have a major impact on the regional economy for years.

“At least 8,000 workers on the docks have jobs that have been directly affected by this collapse,” Moore said.

The governor began his news conference by paying tribute to the six road workers — all Latino immigrants — who died when the bridge tumbled into the deep waters of the Patapsco River.

Two bodies have been recovered, while the four others have been declared missing and presumed dead.

Recovery efforts have been suspended, with authorities saying the water — cold, dark and filled with jagged steel and concrete debris — is for now too dangerous for divers.

India aiming for financial ‘Atmanirbhar’ status in 10 years: PM Modi

Mumbai: Over the next 10 years, India must strive to become a ‘financially Atmanirbhar’ economy that is shielded from all global events and continues to march ahead confidently for progress and development, Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, said on Monday.

Speaking at the 90th anniversary celebrations of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the PM said that the country’s economy has risen in the last few years from the inherited mess of 2014 when the BJP government took office, and is now poised for take-off.

“India is among the youngest nations in the world… Our policies have opened up new sectors in the economy like green energy, digital technology, Defence which is getting into the export mode, MSMEs, space and tourism industries.

“The RBI must address the aspirations of the youth and develop ‘out-of-the-box’ policies for all these emerging sectors to help the youth,” urged the PM.

Pointing out that globally there is a challenge for nations to strike a balance between inflation control and growth, the PM called upon the RBI to study and develop a model for this, which can be a trendsetter for the world, especially the Global South, while ensuring that the Indian Rupee is accessible and acceptable world over.

He said that in the next 10 years, India will strive to improve its financial independence, with the country’s economy getting impacted minimally by global developments “as we are already on the way to becoming a world growth engine.”

Present at the celebrations were Union Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, RBI Governor, Shaktikanta Das, and other dignitaries.

Gold hits new lifetime high amid geopolitical tensions

Mumbai: Gold prices rose to a new lifetime high of $2,263.53 per ounce in the international market on Monday as geopolitical tensions increase in Central Asia, and the US Fed has signalled a rate cut.

Tracking the rally in the international market, the MCX gold price in India (Gold Futures contract for April 2024 expiry) soared to a record high of Rs 69,487 per 10 gm in opening trade and was hovering at Rs 68,828 at 11:26 am.

“The rise in gold prices has been triggered by the US Fed signalling a rate cut…Gold has continuously been the fond asset class for central banking and safe-haven investment avenue,” said Colin Shah, Founder and MD of Kama Jewelry.

Expectations of low interest rates make financial instruments less attractive for investors compared to gold leading to increased purchases of the yellow and the rise in prices.

Rising geopolitical risks and buying by central banks, led by China have also fuelled gold prices. With no end in sight to the Russia-Ukraine war and the Israel-Hamas conflict spreading to the Red Sea region, gold is seen as an attractive safe haven asset by investors amid geopolitical uncertainty.

The demand for gold in the domestic market is fuelled by the need for precious metal in marriages as it is gifted to brides and grooms in large quantities as jewellery. However, jewellers are of the view that the soaring gold prices may dampen this demand. This is also reflected in the declining imports of the precious metal, according to them.

“Gold prices have moved steadily higher over the last six months as expectations of a dovish Fed policy have been gaining ground. The fall in interest rates is positive for gold prices. The gold prices breaking key long-term resistance levels indicate there may be strong momentum which may continue over the near to medium term, some profit may not be ruled out though,” said Dr Joseph Thomas, Head of Research at Emkay Wealth Management.

MS Dhoni's 10-Year-Old Tweet Viral As Fans Celebrate Despite CSK's Loss

MS Dhoni is an emotion. Despite being 42 years old, the Chennai Super Kings stalwart continues to entertain fans with his batting ability. His 16-ball 37 against Delhi Capitals came a little too late in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 clash on Sunday. Yet, CSK fans had little to complain about as they witnessed a vintage MS Dhoni performance. As fans went ga-ga upon seeing the Dhoni show, a 10-year-old tweet of the veteran wicket-keeper batter resurfaced on social media, and quickly went viral.

Dhoni isn’t someone who posts stuff on social media on a regular basis these days. But, in 2014, he posted a tweet that read: “Doesn’t matter which team wins,I am here for entertainment.”

Sunday’s clash against Delhi truly reflected what Dhoni had said 10 years ago. Though CSK lost the match, their former skipper made everyone’s day by showcasing pure entertainment.

Faced with a tough 192-run target, the Super Kings tried to scale it down through Ajinkya Rahane (45), Dhoni (37 not out) and Daryl Mitchell (34) but the Capitals carried far too many guns for them on the night. CSK ended up at 171 for six.

With CSK needing 58 off 18 balls, Dhoni walked out to bat for the first time this season amid chants of “Dhoni Dhoni” and treated his fans to some delightful shots.

The former CSK skipper blasted two fours in the first three balls with Ahmed dropping a sitter in the second ball.

Dhoni then clobbered a six over extra cover off Ahmed, who ended up with three wides to concede 12 runs. But Mukesh conceded just 5 runs in the 19th over to crush CSK’s dream, leaving them to make an impossible 41 off the last over.

Dhoni, who turned the clock back, however, gave his fans enough to cheer with a four and a one-handed six off the first two balls before producing another four and a last-ball six as CSK racked up 20 runs.

But the Dhoni hurricane came a trifle late.

Israeli forces retreat from Gaza’s al-Shifa hospital after carnage

The Gaza Health Ministry says Israeli forces have withdrawn tanks and vehicles from Gaza’s main hospital al-Shifa after a two-week siege of the medical complex.

In a statement on Monday, the ministry said that dozens of bodies had been found at the complex after the Israeli pullout, which also left behind a vast swath of destruction.

It emphasized that Israel retreated from the hospital “after burning down the complex buildings and putting it completely out of service.”

“The scale of the destruction inside the complex and the buildings around it is very large,” the ministry said.

The Israeli military also confirmed their withdrawal from the hospital.

The Gaza government’s media office said dozens of the Israeli airstrikes and shells around the complex had provided cover for the withdrawing vehicles.

Around 1.4 million people who fled their homes elsewhere in Gaza have sought shelter in Rafah, the only part of the territory Israeli troops have yet to enter.

Washington has nonetheless approved billions of dollars worth of bombs and fighter jets for Israel in recent days, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing unnamed officials.

Israel first raided the hospital in Gaza City last November. On March 18, Israeli occupation forces started a new wave of attacks on the medical complex and imposed a siege on it.

Al-Shifa, Gaza’s largest hospital, has sheltered thousands of Palestinians who fled Israel’s invasion in the northern parts of the territory.

The Israeli military claimed that the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas is using the facility to “conduct and promote terrorist activity.” Hamas has repeatedly denied operating from Shifa and other health facilities.

A doctor said more than 20 bodies had been recovered from the Shifa hospital and that some had been crushed by withdrawing vehicles.

Israel unleashed its brutal US-backed war on the Gaza Strip on October 7 after Hamas carried out a historic operation against the usurping entity in retaliation for the regime’s intensified atrocities against the Palestinian people.

However, more than six months into the offensive, the Tel Aviv regime has failed to achieve its objectives of “destroying Hamas” and finding Israeli captives despite killing at least 32,782 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injuring 75,298 others.

Intense fighting

Israel early on Monday continued its deadly air strikes against other areas of the Gaza Strip amid fighting in several flashpoints located across the besieged territory.

Gaza’s Health Ministry said on Monday that at least 60 people died in the strip overnight.

Israel’s genocidal war has devastated much of Gaza, including several health facilities, and sparked stern warnings of famine among the civilian population.

A binding UN Security Council resolution adopted on March 25 has so far failed to curb Israel’s acts of aggression, including in or around hospitals.

The long-awaited resolution demanded an immediate ceasefire for the Muslim holy month of Ramadan and the release of Israelis Hamas took captive during Operation Al-Aqsa Storm on October 7, 2023. It also underscores the “urgent need to expand the flow” of aid into Gaza.

At least four Palestinians were killed and 16 injured, including several journalists, on Sunday in an Israeli airstrike on a tent for displaced people on the grounds of the Al-Aqsa Hospital compound in the city of Deir el-Balah in central Gaza, medical sources reported.

This Country Will Now Allow Adults To Carry Upto 25 g Cannabis

This Country Will Now Allow Adults To Carry Upto 25 g Cannabis

The law has also led to criticism from police, who fear it will be difficult to enforce.

Berlin:

Germany on Monday became the biggest EU country to legalise recreational cannabis, despite fierce objections from opposition politicians and medical associations.

Under the first step in the much-debated new law, adults over 18 are now allowed to carry 25 grams of dried cannabis and cultivate up to three marijuana plants at home.

The changes leave Germany with some of the most liberal cannabis laws in Europe, alongside Malta and Luxembourg, which legalised recreational use in 2021 and 2023, respectively.

The Netherlands, known for its permissive attitude to the drug, has in recent years taken a stricter approach to counter cannabis tourism.

As the law took effect at midnight, hundreds of people cheered by Berlin’s iconic Brandenbrug Gate, many of them by lighting up joints in what one participant, a very happy 25-year-old Niyazi, called “a bit of extra freedom”.

As the next step in the legal reform, from July 1 it will be possible to legally obtain weed through “cannabis clubs” in the country.

These regulated associations will be allowed to have up to 500 members each, and will be able to distribute up to 50 grams of cannabis per person per month.

Until then, “consumers must not tell the police where they bought their cannabis” in the event of a street check, Georg Wurth, director of the German Cannabis Association, told AFP.

‘Disaster’

Initial plans for cannabis to be sold via licensed shops have been ditched due to EU opposition, though a second law is in the pipeline to trial the sale of the drug in shops in pilot regions.

The German government, a three-way coalition led by Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Social Democrats, argues that legalisation will help contain the growing black market for the popular substance.

But health groups have raised concerns that legalisation could lead to an increase in use among young people, who face the highest health risks.

Cannabis use among young people can affect the development of the central nervous system, leading to an increased risk of developing psychosis and schizophrenia, experts have warned.

“From our point of view, the law as it is written is a disaster,” Katja Seidel, a therapist at a cannabis addiction centre for young people in Berlin, told AFP.

Even Health Minister Karl Lauterbach, a doctor, has said that cannabis consumption can be “dangerous”, especially for young people.

The government has promised a widespread information campaign to raise awareness of the risks and to boost support programmes.

It has also stressed that cannabis will remain banned for under-18s and within 100 metres of schools, kindergartens and playgrounds.

‘Responsible’

The law has also led to criticism from police, who fear it will be difficult to enforce.

“From April 1, our colleagues will find themselves in situations of conflict with citizens, as uncertainty reigns on both sides,” said Alexander Poitz, vice-president of the GdP police union.

Another potential issue is that the law will retroactively declare an amnesty for cannabis-related offences, creating an administrative headache for the legal system.

According to the German Judges’ Association, the pardon could apply to more than 200,000 cases that would need to be checked and processed.

Conservative opposition leader Friedrich Merz has said he would “immediately” repeal the law if he and his party formed a government following nationwide elections in 2025.

But Finance Minister Christian Lindner, from the liberal FDP, said legalisation was a “responsible” move that was better than “directing people to the black market”.

The new law “will not lead to chaos”, Lindner told public broadcaster ARD.
