Congress leader accuses police of misbehaving with tribal women

Khammam: TPCC campaign committee State coordinator M Ajay Babu objected to the arrest of Kothagudem DCC general secretary M Samelu in connection with an attack on police by tribals in Khammam district on Sunday.

He said Khammam police arrested Samelu at Mothe toll gate on Khammam-Suryapet highway following a complaint by forest officers. However, Samelu was not present on the spot and was not connected to the attack on the police by tribals, he claimed.

He informed that forest officers lodged a complaint with police alleging that around 38 tribal folks resorted to attack on forest personnel and Samelu was behind it. Following the complaint, police arrested him and 40 tribals booking them in an attempt to murder case and in eight other sections after the incident.

The police resorted to lathi charge and abused women in vulgar language while arresting them. The clash between the tribals at Buggapadu village of Sathupalli mandal was among Congress and Communist factions who were fighting over rights over the podu lands in question, he said, demanding that the police be booked under the SC/ST Atrocity Act for abusing tribal women.

Condemning the attack on police, he said CI Kiran Kumar who was beaten up by tribals was in mufti dress and tribals could not recognise him as a police officer. In addition to that some police personnel misbehaved with women, and used force while controlling the clashing tribals and that was why they were compelled to revolt, Ajay Babu said.

Meanwhile, CPI (ML) New Democracy state secretary Aavunuri Madhu demanded that the government should be held responsible for the Buggapadu incident. The incident was a result of dual policies adopted by the Forest Department. Cases against tribals should be dropped, he said.

Temporary Channels Being Created To Aid Baltimore Bridge Response

Temporary Channels Being Created To Aid Baltimore Bridge Response

The port’s ongoing closure has hit the US economy, Maryland’s Governor said (File)

Washington:

US authorities working on the Baltimore bridge collapse told AFP on Monday that they plan to open two small, temporary channels to let ships access the site of the incident.

These channels will initially only be open to vessels involved in the Francis Scott Key Bridge cleanup operation, and will not be big enough to allow cargo and container ships to pass through.

The first of the channels is scheduled to open on Monday, US Coast Guard Petty Officer Kimberly Reaves told AFP, adding that a second channel would open at a later date.

The temporary channels are being created as work continues on the mammoth task of clearing the harbor of the steel structure, which was destroyed in a matter of seconds last Tuesday when an out-of-control ship struck it, killing six people.

The authorities hope that removing the bridge — by cutting it into smaller sections and lifting them out — will help rescuers recover all the victims’ bodies as well as reopen the crucial shipping lane.

No Public Use

“The channel is being opened to people involved in the response,” US Coast Guard Petty Officer Carmen Caver told AFP on Monday.

“We have no plans as of now to open it to public use, but you may see ships transiting if they’re involved with the actual operations,” she added.

The first temporary channel will have a depth of 11 feet, a 264-foot horizontal clearance, and a vertical clearance of 96 feet, the multi-agency task force overseeing the operation said in a statement.

The temporary channel “is not big enough for any container or cargo ships to pass through,” Caver told AFP, adding: “They’re working on a plan to make it slowly open to more and more people.”

The port of Baltimore is a key hub for the auto industry, handling almost 850,000 autos and light trucks last year — more than any other US port — according to Maryland state figures.

It also ranked first for farm and construction machinery, as well as imported sugar and gypsum, and second for coal exports.

The port’s ongoing closure is already hitting the US economy, Maryland Governor Wes Moore told MSNBC on Sunday.

“It’s impacting people all over the country,” he said.

Gold prices soar to record high in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: Gold prices in Hyderabad soared to a record high on Monday, with the precious metal retailing at Rs 69,380 for 24 carat gold per 10 grams. This marks the highest price recorded in the city in the past year.

On March 31, the previous day, the price of 24 carat gold per 10 grams was Rs 68,450 in Hyderabad, indicating a significant increase within a day.

Industry experts attribute this surge in gold prices to escalating geopolitical tensions, particularly in Central Asia. The recent signal from the United States Federal Reserve indicating a potential rate cut has also contributed to the bullish trend in gold markets.

According to analysts, rising geopolitical risks globally, coupled with substantial buying by central banks, notably led by China, have further fueled the upward trajectory of gold prices.

The ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict and the extension of the Israel-Hamas conflict to the Red Sea region have intensified geopolitical uncertainty. In such an environment, gold is increasingly perceived as a safe haven asset by investors, driving up demand and prices.

Experts anticipate continued volatility in gold markets as investors seek refuge amid geopolitical turmoil.

Raina Pays Ultimate Tribute As 42-Year-Old Dhoni Turns Back The Clock

Former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batter Suresh Raina lauded his former franchise and Indian teammate MS Dhoni following his explosive batting cameo against Delhi Capitals (DC) in their Indian Premier League (IPL) match on Sunday. Delhi Capitals clinched their first win of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season with a 20-run triumph over the defending champions Chennai Super Kings at the ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium on Sunday. In the match, the vintage ‘Thala’ (master) smashed sixes like only he does. Coming in the end, he scored 37* in 16 balls, with four boundaries and three sixes. His runs came at a strike rate of over 231. Following his knock, Raina, also known as ‘Chinna Thala’ or Dhoni’s right-hand among CSK fans, was full of praise for Dhoni, saying that inspiration knows no age and the 42-year-old’s batting prowess at this point of his career is a testament to his “unparalleled spirit and dedication”.

“Inspiration knows no age! Witnessing @msdhoni Mahi Bhai’s incredible batting prowess at 42 is a testament to his unparalleled spirit and dedication, @JioCinema #DCvCSK,” Raina said in a post on X.

Raina represented CSK along with MS for the majority of his IPL career from 2008-21, except for his stint with the Gujarat Lions (GL) from 2016-17. In 205 IPL matches, Raina scored 5,528 runs at an average of 32.51 and a strike rate of 136.73. He scored a century and 39 fifties in 200 innings of his IPL career, with the best score of 100*. DC won the toss and opted to bat first. David Warner (52 in 35 balls, with five fours and three sixes) and a returning Prithvi Shaw (43 in 27 balls, with four boundaries and two sixes) started off well with a 93-run opening partnership. Following their dismissal, DC lost their direction for a while until Rishabh Pant (51 in 32 balls, with four boundaries and three sixes) scored some quick runs in the end to take the side to 191/5 in their 20 overs.

Matheesha Pathirana (3/31) was the pick of the bowlers for CSK.

In the run-chase of 192, Khaleel Ahmed (2/21) and Mukesh Kumar (3/21) troubled the CSK batters with their line and length and at one point, CSK was 75/3 in 10.2 overs. Useful knocks came from Ajinkya Rahane (45 in 30 balls, with five fours and two sixes), Daryl Mitchell (34 in 26 balls, with a four and two sixes) and MS Dhoni (37* in 16 balls, with four boundaries and three sixes), but DC secured a 20-run win, restricting the five-time champions to 171/6.

Nageswara Rao along with MLC Tata Madhusudan visited Thigala Banjara of Konijarla mandal on Monday and inspected the dried maize fields. Speaking to the media he said affected farmers were lamenting that due to lack of irrigation water the standing crops were withering.

Madhusudan said that the BRS party district leadership was with farmers of Khammam district. He asked people to recognise the fact that the present drought like conditions were caused by the Congress government’s negligence but not by nature.

He said Nageswara Rao, a senior politician in the district was known to all the people of Khammam district and a blameless person who carried out charity activities. The public should vote for BRS to send Nageswara Rao to Parliament.

Terrorist Jarnail Bhindranwala Poster At Assam Dhaba, Owner Arrested

Terrorist Jarnail Bhindranwala Poster At Assam Dhaba, Owner Arrested

The BJP’s youth wing informed the police about the posters

Guwahati:

The Assam police arrested the owner of a dhaba in the state’s Bongaigaon district for putting up posters of Khalistani leaders and flags.

The roadside eatery owned by one Gurmukh Singh had put up a banner of terrorist Jarnail Singh Bhindranwala. A poster of singer-politician Sidhu Moose Wala, who was shot dead in 2022, and a Khalistani flag were also put up.

The members of the BJP’s youth wing informed the police about the posters following which the dhaba’s owner was arrested, sources said.

Gurmukh Singh is from Punjab’s Tarn Taran district and has been in Assam for years now, sources in the police said.

“We suspect that he displayed the posters at his dhaba to attract truck drivers, a significant number of whom are from Punjab. Otherwise, it would be irrational for him to put up such material,” another police official said.
