Zerodha's Nithin Kamath Says Work From Home ''Detrimental'' For Tech, Business Teams

Zerodha's Nithin Kamath Says Work From Home ''Detrimental'' For Tech, Business Teams

He also advocated for a hybrid module

Working from home became an absolute necessity during the pandemic. However, now that Covid-19 is over, more and more employers want their staff to return to the office Recently,  Zerodha CEO Nithin Kamath stepped into the work-from-home debate, saying the remote office concept did not work for some of his employees and proved challenging for those in tech, business, and decision-making positions due to communication barriers. He also noted that ever since some of his staff started returning to office on a hybrid basis, the results have been ”dramatically positive.”

”All of us at @zerodhaonline  went fully remote during the pandemic lockdown in 2020. While it’s been great for some, it hasn’t been for others,” Mr Kamath wrote on X.

”Work from home works well for support roles given the structured nature of the work. But for tech, business, and decision-making teams, it has been detrimental, primarily due to the big gaps in remote communication,” he added.

See the post here:

In his post, he also shared a blog written by Zerodha CTO Kailash Nadh, who said remote work needed ”specific” skill sets. The blog titled ”The remoteness of remote work”, talks of remote work and challenges that the employees faced, including overtime, isolation, communication breakdowns, and burnout.

”The hard lesson we learnt is that effective, long-term remote work requires specific skill sets and DNA to pull off,” Mr Nadh said.

He also advocated for a hybrid module saying how Zerodha implemented the same, with 10% of its core team, mainly in creative and decision-making roles, returning to the office part-time.

”And so, we came back, some 10% or about 100 of us in the org—technical, creative, business, and critical decision-making teams—on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Two days at home to zone out, avoid commuting, and to do focused work, and three days specifically for conversations and collaboration across teams,” the blog post reads.

According to him, this shift has led to improved communication, more efficient decision-making, and a resurgence of the innovation-friendly environment that Zerodha values.

The post drew mixed reactions. One user said, ”Although people save commute time and fuel by doing WFH, but they miss a lot in terms of personal networking.” Another added, ”There are people who works like a beast in WFH. It’s mostly dependent on person. There is no clear winner between wfh and wfo.”

A third said, ”What’s the moral of the story? Well, it’s a reminder that one size doesn’t fit all when it comes to remote work. Sometimes, you gotta mix things up, find that sweet spot between the virtual world and the real one.”

A fourth added, ”The solution is to open offices in other cities instead of a densely populated and polluted city, improving your health as well your employees.” Yet another said, ”Decision making is a quality some have and some don’t!!! Remote working has nothing to do with it. Another argument for learning is also ridiculous. I have learned more after graduating through online platforms.”

Crew opened to largely mixed reviews. Film critic Saibal Chatterjee, in his review for NDTV, gave the film 2 stars out of 5 and wrote, “Crew would have been much more fun if only it knew how to buoy things up with strokes of genuine inspiration. "Is He 42?": India Great Left Stunned By MS Dhoni's Destructive IPL Knock

MS Dhoni was back at his destructive best as he slammed 37 runs in just 16 deliveries for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2024 match against Delhi Capitals on Sunday. The former Indian cricket team skipper looked in brilliant form and although his side slumped to their first loss of this year’s competition, his knock earned him praise from both fans and experts. Former India batter Krishnamachari Srikkanth was left ecstatic by Dhoni’s powerful hitting and during his analysis after the match, he marveled at the fact that the wicket-keeper batter is still able to play such powerful shots at the age of 42.

“I don’t know how to express this. On one side, as a MS Dhoni fan, I am very happy, in a sense thala what a knock! At the age of 42, someone is hitting like this, he is hitting them without any worry. Vintage Dhoni! In 2005, he hit an aggressive century against Pakistan in Vizag, he got out for 0 in the first match of his international career. In his second match (fifth), he tore into the Pakistan attack,” he said.

“He is hitting sixes over point, he is hitting one-handed six into the mid-wicket stands. He is hitting it everywhere. He tore into the Delhi attack. What a knock! Earlier, he used to access the point region for his big shots on the off-side, but that cover drive, that leaning six was brilliant,” he added.

Srikkanth also hailed Dhoni as the best wicket-keeper at the moment and placed Gujarat Titans’ Wriddhiman Saha at No. 2. There have been a lot of speculation regarding Dhoni’s future in the competition but Srikkanth went on to say that he believes Dhoni will play for two more years.

“In terms of keeping, he is still the best Indian keeper. He is still taking catches nonchalantly while standing up to spinners. He is still India’s best. No. 1 is Dhoni, No. 2 is Wriddhiman Saha, they both are still the best in the business. He made it look so easy. He is keeping well, he is batting well, he is running between the wickets well. Is he 42? I think, he will play the IPL for 2 more years, I think,” he said.

Google To Delete Incognito Mode Data Over $5 Billion Privacy Lawsuit

Google To Delete Incognito Mode Search Data Over $5 Billion Privacy Lawsuit

Google announced in January 2020 that it would begin eliminating third-party cookies.

San Francisco:

Google has agreed to delete a vast trove of search data to settle a suit that it tracked millions of US users who thought they were browsing the internet privately.

If a proposed settlement filed Monday in San Francisco federal court is approved by a judge, Google must “delete and/or remediate billions of data records” linked to people using the Chrome browser’s incognito mode, according to court documents.

“This settlement is an historic step in requiring dominant technology companies to be honest in their representations to users about how the companies collect and employ user data, and to delete and remediate data collected,” lawyer David Boies said in the filing.

A hearing is slated for July 30 before Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers, who is to decide whether to approve the deal that would let Google avoid a trial in the class-action suit.

The settlement calls for no cash damages to be paid but leaves an option for Chrome users who feel they were wronged to sue Google separately to get money.

The suit originally filed in June of 2020 sought at least $5 billion in damages.

“We are pleased to settle this lawsuit, which we always believed was meritless,” Google spokesman Jorge Castaneda said in a statement.

“We are happy to delete old technical data that was never associated with an individual and was never used for any form of personalization.”

The object of the lawsuit was the “Incognito Mode” in the Chrome browser that plaintiffs said gave users a false sense that what they were surfing online was not being tracked by the Silicon Valley tech firm.

But internal Google emails brought forward in the lawsuit demonstrated that users using incognito mode were being followed by the search and advertising behemoth for measuring web traffic and selling ads.

The lawsuit, filed in a California court, claimed Google’s practices had infringed on users’ privacy by intentionally deceiving them with the incognito option.

The original complaint alleged that Google had been given the “power to learn intimate details about individuals’ lives, interests, and internet usage.”

“Google has made itself an unaccountable trove of information so detailed and expansive that George Orwell could never have dreamed it,” it added.

The settlement requires Google, for the next five years, to block third-party tracking “cookies” by default in Incognito Mode.

Third-party cookies are small files which are used to target advertising by tracking web navigation and are placed by visited sites and not by the browser itself.

No cookies?

Google earlier this year began limiting third-party cookies for some users of its Chrome browser, a first step towards eventually abandoning the files that have raised privacy concerns.

Google announced in January 2020 that it would begin eliminating third-party cookies within two years, but the start has been delayed several times amid opposition from web media publishers.

Cookies have recently been subject to greater regulation, including the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation introduced in 2016 as well as regulations in California.
