Ancient megalithic tombs unearthed in Medchal by KTCB

Hyderabad: In a recent exploration conducted by members of the Kotha Telangana Charitra Brundam (KTCB), new megalithic tombs have been discovered in Adras village of Medchal district’s Thiruchintalapalli mandal.

The coordinates for these tombs are 17.625524 degrees north latitude and 78.686504 degrees east longitude.

The team, including Ahobilam Karunakar, Mohammad Naseeruddin, and Korivi Gopal, unearthed several graves that serve as historical artifacts tracing back to ancestors’ era. One of the identified tombs contained 18 marbles buried in a circular pattern.

Sriramoju Haragopal, the history team’s convenor, noted that the slabs related to the grave are visible in the middle, indicating a cist burial. Additionally, towering menhirs in the vicinity, reaching heights of 12 to 14 feet, suggest the presence of mass graves.

According to Haragopal, these findings are part of a larger historical narrative, as mentioned by European researcher EH Hunt in 1925, who estimated the existence of at least ten lakhs (one million) megalithic graves in Telangana. However, over the past century, many of these graves reportedly have been lost due to urban expansion, agricultural activities, deforestation, and real estate development.

Kotha Telangana Charitra Brundam has reported their findings to the Telangana Heritage Department and the state government, advocating for protection, examination, and research of these tombs.

"We Must Create Hope": Israeli Who Lost Parents On Oct 7 Calls For Peace

'We Must Create Hope': Israeli Who Lost Parents On Oct 7 Calls For Peace

Israel’s retaliatory campaign has killed more than 32,800 Gazans

Israeli businessman Maoz Inon lost both his parents to the October 7 attacks by Hamas but while some bereaved have been baying for vengeance, the 49-year-old has been preaching peace.

“We didn’t want to take revenge,” Inon told AFP at a small peace rally in Shefa Amr in northern Israel that united Jews and Palestinians, a rare event since the war broke out.

Inon admitted that at first he struggled to call for peace and forgiveness “but this is the legacy of my parents. The future is going to be better,” he said.

“War is not bringing any safety or security to the people of Israel, and of course not to the Palestinians.”

“The cycle of blood and fear has been going on for more than 100 years,” he said.

Bilha and Yakovi Inon were killed at their home in the cooperative farming community of Netiv Haasara, close to Gaza, as Hamas fired volleys of rockets into Israel.

Some 1,160 people — mostly civilians — were killed in the unprecedented attack, according to an AFP tally of Israeli official figures.

Israel’s retaliatory campaign has killed more than 32,800 people, mostly women and children, the health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza said.

Since his parents’ deaths, Inon has criss-crossed Israel and Europe in bid to reach out to Palestinians, including some from Gaza who “also lost a father, brother, entire families”.

‘We must forgive’

“I have learnt a few lessons that changed my life,” he said. “One of them is that hope is an action. We need to work to create hope. It’s not something we will be given… We must create hope. And this rally here was exactly an example,” he said.

“I know that Israelis and Palestinians can live together because I’ve experienced it. For 20 years I had partners from Palestine, Jordan and Egypt,” said Inon, who opened a chain of hostels, including one in the predominantly Palestinian Old City of Nazareth, in northern Israel.

Even as he was hugged by the crowd after his speech, Inon admitted that responses like his had been rare in Israel since October 7.

The attack has traumatised the country, leaving many adamant that peace with the Palestinians is no longer possible.

Inon said history had shown that peace could be made, even with Israel’s foes.

In 1978 “Egypt was Israel’s number one enemy, far more powerful than Hamas,” and yet the neighbouring countries signed a peace agreement “only a few years after the 1973 war”, another Arab-Israeli conflict which shocked Israel.

To move forward, “we must forgive the past and forgive the present… and work very hard to build the future,” Inon said.

He called on the international community to support those calling for reconciliation and to “invest in peace” as it did in Northern Ireland and South Africa.

Peace has become almost a prophetic mission for the charismatic businessman. Four nights after his parents were killed “I woke in the night crying, my entire body in pain. My wife was sleeping next to me” when he dreamt that an angel called “the star of peace” came to him.

“I had a dream, and now I’m following this dream,” he said.

KTR attacks BJP reliance on ‘Jai Sri Ram’; says true Hindus do not use Lord Ram for politics

Etala Rajender should be ashamed to question the BRS over the crop loan waiver as it was during his stint as Finance Minister in the then BRS government that the crop loans amounting to Rs.16,000 crore were waived in Telangana.

KTR attacks BJP reliance on ‘Jai Sri Ram’; says true Hindus do not use Lord Ram for politics

Hyderabad: BRS working president KT Rama Rao emphasised the need for job opportunities and development over emotional rhetoric. Criticising the BJP’s reliance on slogans of ‘Jai Sri Ram’ for political mileage, without addressing issues like unemployment and economic development. He asserted that the BRS was a committed secular party which prioritised people’s welfare regardless of caste and religion.

Addressing the party cadre at the Malkajgiri parliamentary constituency preparatory meeting in Medchal on Tuesday, Rama Rao compared the governance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao over the past decade.

He said Chandrashekhar Rao’s initiatives in Telangana benefited numerous families through welfare schemes. He challenged BJP‘s candidate Etala Rajender to name Modi’s contributions to Malkajgiri constituency.

“The slogan ‘Jai Sri Ram’ will not ensure our livelihood. We too are Hindus and give slogan of ‘Jai Sri Ram’. But unlike the BJP, we never did politics in the name of Lord Ram or religion. A true Hindu will only follow his/her ‘Dharma’, but will not seek political mileage in the name of religion,” he said, urging voters to demand accountability from BJP regarding development projects in the constituency.

The BRS working president also lashed out at the BJP for non-allotment of new government medical colleges, Navodaya schools and other educational institutions in Telangana during the last 10 years. He said the BJP was prioritising religious symbolism over genuine development initiatives.

He reminded that the Modi government ignored the repeated requests of the previous BRS government for nearly 10 years to allot defence lands for construction of skyways and gave its nod recently ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

Etala Rajender should be ashamed to question the BRS over the crop loan waiver as it was during his stint as Finance Minister in the then BRS government that the crop loans amounting to Rs.16,000 crore were waived in Telangana.

“In the second term as well, the BRS waived off crop loans amounting to Rs.14,000 crore of a total of Rs.19,000 crore despite the Covid-19 pandemic. But the Modi government favoured to waive off loans of corporate businessmen to the tune of Rs.14.5 lakh crore in last 10 years. The BJP has no moral right to seek votes as it has done nothing for farmers,” he said.

Rama Rao lambasted Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy dubbing him a political opportunist with a history of switching parties for personal gain.

Revanth Reddy was serving his own interests during his stint as Malkajgiri MP, rather than working for the welfare of the constituents, he said, reiterating that Revanth Reddy would be the first leader to defect to the BJP after the Lok Sabha elections, noting that the latter was not denying the same.

Stating that the main fight was between the BRS and BJP in Malkajgiri constituency during the Lok Sabha polls, he urged people to vote for BRS candidate Ragidi Laxma Reddy.

"If Prakash Ambedkar Reconciles…": Congress Leader's Seat Offer

Prithviraj Chavan insisted that candidates for Maharashtra seats will be announced soon.

Mumbai:

Former Maharashtra chief minister and senior Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan held out an olive branch to his party’s ‘almost ally’ Prakash Ambedkar today amid differences over the seat-sharing formula for the Lok Sabha elections. Prakash Ambedkar-led Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) was in touch with Maha Vikas Aghadi or MVA – an alliance comprising the Congress, NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) and the Shiv Sena (UBT) for the Lok Sabha polls but the talks failed.

Yesterday, the Congress announced the name of a candidate from Akola even as the MVA had earlier given the VBA a proposal for five seats, including Akola, Ramtek, Dhule and a seat in Mumbai. The Congress announced its candidate after the VBA separately declared names for some Lok Sabha seats, hinting at a rift.

Mr Chavan, however, said that the Congress “will withdraw the Congress candidate from Akola if there is an alliance with the VBA”. Prakash Ambedkar has announced that he would contest from the Akola seat.

“There is no alliance with the VBA yet. If there is no alliance, we will declare candidates. But even now, at this stage also, if (Prakash) Ambedkar reconciles, we will withdraw our candidate but for that, there has to be an alliance,” said Mr Chavan.

Prakash Ambedkar, the grandson of Dalit icon and the father of the Constitution, BR Ambedkar, recently announced candidates for nine Lok Sabha seats in the state, crashing hopes of his party joining the MVA. He took a jibe at the opposition alliance in the state and said there was a clear divergence of opinions.

VBA candidates finished third in many constituencies in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, in which nominees of the Congress or NCP (undivided) came second, indicating that votes were split in favour of winning candidates, mostly from the BJP and Shiv Sena (undivided).

The former Maharashtra Chief Minister also expressed his willingness to contest from the Satara seat. He recently held a closed-door meeting with Maharashtra NCP (Sharad Pawar) chief Jayant Patil in Karad after the NCP MP from Satara, Shrinivas Patil, declined to contest owing to health issues.

Mr Chavan, the MLA from the Karad South constituency, said since the Satara Lok Sabha constituency comes under NCP (SP) quota, Sharad Pawar will decide the candidate.

“There is just a possibility of this contest. The NCP will have to find a candidate and they will have to make sure that a strong candidate is put up against the probable BJP candidate. The BJP will most likely field Uday Bhosle, who was earlier with the NCP, from the seat. Discussions are going on,” he said.

Dismissing the rumours that he might contest under the NCP (SP) symbol, he said, “If I contest, I will be contesting under the Congress symbol. It’s up to Sharad Pawar’s NCP to decide. I have conveyed my willingness.”

Mr Chavan represented Satara in Parliament in the 1990s. He was defeated by Shrinivas Patil in 1999 after Sharad Pawar walked out of the Congress and formed the Nationalist Congress Party. Since then, the NCP (undivided) has fielded candidates from Satara.

He also insisted that candidates for all Lok Sabha seats from Maharashtra will be announced soon. “Out of the 48 seats, names for 45 to 46 seats have been decided. There are issues in two or three seats and that will be sorted in a day or two,” said the senior Congress leader.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP won 23 out of 25 contested seats, while the undivided Shiv Sena secured 18 out of 23 seats.

Lok Sabha elections to the 48 seats in the state – the second-largest contributor to the Lok Sabha after Uttar Pradesh – will be held in five phases between April 19 and May 20 and votes will be counted on June 4.

'Let's Not Build Hell On Far-Off Planet': Rakesh Sharma On Space And Peace

“The UN has mentioned very clearly that space belongs to all of humanity,” the astronaut said. (File)

New Delhi:

Having an expansive yet inclusive worldview is often difficult when your feet are planted on the ground and your existence is shaped by a host of factors that divide humanity. But when one goes into space, as many spacefarers have testified, boundaries tend to blur and you see the Earth for what it is – a pale blue dot floating in an endless universe, which is also the only place that humans can call home.

As the only Indian to have stepped into the final frontier, Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma shared these thoughts, and many more, with NDTV on how the human race can work towards an equitable division of resources, fewer conflicts and – importantly –  avoid “building hell on some far-off planet”.

In an exclusive interview with NDTV’s Science Editor Pallava Bagla, Wing Commander Sharma said one of the triggers for his thoughts on a world undivided by imaginary lines was a statement by Prince Sultan ibn Salman al Saud of Saudi Arabia, who went up into space in 1985, came back and said: “You don’t see boundaries from space.”

“Obviously, when you do go up and see the beauty that is there and also that the boundaries are not visible, one always wonders why we haven’t been able to break out of the circle of conflict for centuries now. The root cause of this is that the powerful have always been dispossessing the weak, even of the natural resources which were under them. So, obviously, the distribution of wealth has not been equitable,” India’s first astronaut said.

“So, in my opinion, space really can be leveraged to improve the socio-economic standards of people of all countries. And I think ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) has demonstrated this beautifully because of the vision of (Vikram) Sarabhai and the earlier stalwarts who have guided the space programme,” he added.

Wing Commander Sharma, who went into space aboard a Russian rocket in 1984, said the benefits of space technology applications have been put to good use in India, from tele-medicine, tele-education and tele-consultation to remote sensing

“If all spacefaring nations can come together and start collaborating instead of competing. And, whatever we get out of space, we share, because the United Nations has mentioned very clearly that space belongs to all of humanity,” the former Air Force pilot said.

Emphasising that inclusivity is the need of the hour he added, “So let us not start colonising using an exclusive model. Whatever farming we do, whether on asteroids or the Moon or Mars,  if we can share that wealth with everybody back on Earth, I think we will be removing the root cause of conflict.”

Lone Soldier?

Last year, India signed the US-led Artemis Accords, which encourage cooperation in space but also allow private companies to mine resources. India’s space policy also has a similar clause.

When Wing Commander Sharma was asked whether his views did not, then, put him in a minority, he said he was “not ashamed” to be there and that there was no alternative to cooperation.

“We have tried all other methods, and they all ended up in conflict. So, is that what we want? Do we want to export conflict into space? We have to find a way. The private sector being there is no guarantee that it’s going to end up in conflict,” he said.

Urging everyone to try a different approach, the astronaut said, “If we all see the light at the end of the tunnel; if we can all believe that the Earth can be a better place for everybody; if we can make development sustainable; and if you can carry all these messages, then heaven is right here on Earth, on our planet. So let us not go and build hell on some far-off planet.”

“Let’s get the model right. It will help us, our society, and I think it will help in reducing conflict. After all, all of us are going to have children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. So let’s think about them,” he said.

New Delhi: Online food delivery platform Zomato said it has received a service tax demand and penalty order aggregating over Rs 184 crore, and will file an appeal against it before an appropriate authority.

The demand order has been received for non-payment of service tax for the period October 2014 to June 2017 determined on the basis of certain sales made by the foreign subsidiaries and branches of the company to its customers located outside India, the company said in a late night regulatory filing.

The company also mentioned that in its response to the show cause notice it had clarified on the allegations along with supporting documents and judicial precedents, “which appears to not have been appreciated by the authorities while passing the order.” Subsequently, the company said it received the order passed by the Delhi Central Tax Commissioner (Adjudication) on April 1.

Adilabad: Teacher suspended for foreign tour without permission

Adilabad: M Mahender Yadav, a school assistant working with Zilla Parishad Secondary School at Bharampur village in Thalamadugu mandal was suspended for a foreign tour without the mandatory permission and no-objection certificate (NoC) from higher officials.

District Educational Officer T Pranitha issued the suspension orders on Tuesday.

As per the order, Yadav was suspended for visiting Thailand from March 9 to 14 without obtaining the NoC from the officials of the education department.

An inquiry was carried out into the incident and accordingly, action was initiated against him. Members of both Progressive Recognised Teachers union (PRTU)-Telangana and The Telanga United of Teachers Federation (TUTF) had lodged a complaint against Yadav with the Education department in March. Yadav was reportedly selling alkaline water machines through a multi-level marketing mode, with the foreign tour being a business trip offered by the manufacturer of the machines.
