Registrations & Stamps Dept revenue declines

Officials in Khammam district attribute it to a slowdown in real estate sector

Khammam: There has been a decline in revenue in the Registrations and Stamps Department in the erstwhile Khammam district in the financial year 2023-24 as against the previous financial year. The department earned revenue of over Rs 197 crore in the year 2023-24 from land registrations while in the previous year, the revenue was over Rs 227 crore.

It resulted in a decline of over Rs 30 crore in the year. There are 11 sub-registrar offices at Khammam (district registrar office), Wyra, Khammam Rural, Kusumanchi, Madhira, Sathupalli and Kallur in Khammam district and at Kothagudem, Bhadrachalam, Burgampahad and Yellandu in Kothagudem district. As many as 43,651 documents have been registered in 2023-24 while 47,102 documents were registered in the previous year 2022-23.

In Khammam sub-registrar office 13,513 documents were registered in 2023-24 earning revenue of Rs 92.76 crore while in the previous year, Rs 108.65 crore was earned by registering 15, 416 documents.

A large number of registrations take place at Wyra, Khammam Rural, and Kusumanchi sub-registrar offices after Khammam. Only the Wyra office witnessed an increase in document registrations as well as revenue. At Wyra 4,474 document registrations took place bringing in a revenue of Rs 13.57 crore in 2023-24 while the revenue in the previous year was Rs 12.12 crore from 4,350 document registrations. At the Kusumanchi office, the number of registrations increased but revenue declined.

In Kothagudem district, 5,110 registrations took place accounting for a revenue of Rs 27.30 crore in 2023-24 while 5,816 documents were registered earning a revenue of Rs 34.64 the previous year. Bhadrachalam remained at the bottom with 132 document registrations and a revenue of Rs 4.38 lakh. The officials attributed the decline in revenue to the slowdown in the real estate sector as well as the recent Assembly elections. As the election code of conduct restricted cash carrying limit below Rs 50,000 and surveillance on bank transactions, the public stayed away from land registrations.

‘Wet-bulb temperature’ life-threatening

When the wet bulb temperature reaches its critical limit of 35 degree Celsius, the human body can no longer effectively cool itself, leading to heatstroke and even death.

Hyderabad: While many are aware of health-related perils that come with heatwaves, which are expected to continue till May, not many are aware of their vulnerability to a very risky weather phenomenon known as wet-bulb temperature, a unique condition in which both air temperature and humidity significantly impact the human body.

When the wet bulb temperature reaches its critical limit of 35 degree Celsius, the human body can no longer effectively cool itself, leading to heatstroke and even death.

There are numerous studies, in the last few years, indicating that heatwaves are gradually pushing wet bulb temperatures closer to critical thresholds in the country. Unlike the regular temperature we see in weather forecasts, wet bulb temperatures takes into account both the air temperature and humidity.

Unfortunately, IMD and other weather agencies do not capture these details in their heatwave forecasts. Wet bulb temperatures reflect the human body’s ability to cool itself through sweating. In situations when humidity and temperatures both are high, then the sweating doesn’t take place and the body does not cool down adequately.

On most occasions, this situation leads to heat strokes and fatalities. While coastal districts typically experience high humidity, dry regions are not immune to the dangers of wet bulb temperatures.

There are studies that suggest that many parts of the country might already be experiencing wet bulb temperatures close to 31 degree Celsius, a concerning development, especially with rising temperatures predicted due to climate change.

According to doctors, even if air feels dry, if the wet bulb temperature is high, then the body will work even harder to cool itself, leading to health risks. “A typical healthy person with no pre-existing medical conditions can withstand such natural phenomenon. However, core body temperatures, among people with co-morbid conditions increase rapidly to alarming levels when they get exposed to heat,” says Superintendent, Fever Hospital, Dr K Shankar.

Save the Children: Israel keeps blocking food for famine-stricken Gaza

The Save the Children charity organization says Israel is restricting the flow of much-needed humanitarian relief as the population of the besieged Gaza Strip faces the threat of famine.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the charity warned that malnourished children in Gaza were not getting the food and medical care they need to survive with food being blocked at every turn and the health system obliterated.

“Life-saving supplies which could be used to treat malnourished children are being delayed and denied entry by the Government of Israel,” the statement read.

“Essential food and medical items are obstructed from entering Gaza for days, weeks, or even months. Others are being denied entry altogether by the Israeli authorities, with reports of oxygen cylinders, ventilators and water purifiers being turned away at the border.”

Country Director Xavier Joubert also censured Israel for using starvation as a weapon of war against Palestinians.

“Starvation must never be used as a weapon of war – 27 children have already been killed by starvation and disease. If the world fails to act now countless more children will be added to that number.”

Gaza’s 346,000 children under the age of five are at the greatest risk of malnutrition as the already catastrophic situation rapidly deteriorates across the besieged Palestinian territory.

In the north, it is estimated that one in three children under the age of two is now suffering from wasting, the most severe form of malnutrition, compared to one in six children in January.

A senior US State Department official said on Friday that famine was quite possibly present in parts of the northern Gaza Strip,

Humanitarian catastrophe is unfolding in Gaza, with unimaginable and unnecessary suffering.

Nearly all the 1.1 million children in Gaza are at imminent risk of famine. Families are struggling to find enough food and water, with children already dying because of malnutrition and disease.

Almost every child who has managed to survive the past four months of war is now in the line of fire in Rafah.

The majority of the displaced population – more than 1.3 million people – are trapped in an area of just 62 square kilometers.

Salwan Momika, Iraqi man behind Qur’an desecration, found dead in Norway

Salwan Momika is pulling some pages off the Holy Qur’an in public in the Swedish capital of Stockholm, June 2023.

Iraqi refugee Salwan Momika, who desecrated copies of the Holy Qur’an last year, has reportedly been found dead in Norway.

Radio Genoa reported in a post on social media platform X on Tuesday that the 37-year-old anti-Islam Iraqi man had been found dead.

But further confirmation was yet to come.

“Those who announced Momika’s death with over 1 million impressions deleted the tweet. We are waiting for further confirmation,” it said.

Momika, who gained global notoriety for his sacrilegious act of burning the Quran, had recently moved to Norway from Sweden.

In June 2023, Salwan Momika stomped on the Qur’an before setting several pages alight in front of Stockholm’s largest mosque. The insult to the Muslim holy book was made under the authorization and protection of the Swedish police.

The incident, coinciding with the start of the Muslim Eid al-Adha and the end of the annual pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia, drew the anger of Muslims from across the world.

Following the incident, millions of Muslims across various countries took to the streets to condemn the burning of the Islamic sanctities in Sweden.

Sweden has repeatedly permitted Qur’an burning in recent years. In January last year, a Swedish-Danish right-wing extremist burned a copy of the Qur’an near the Turkish embassy in Stockholm.

While Sweden had said it has no plans to make sweeping changes to freedom of speech laws following several acts of desecration of the Muslim holy book, many Muslim countries have regarded the blasphemous acts as instances of hate-mongering and inclination towards aggression that abuse the principle of free speech.

"Matter Of Time": KKR Coach's Massive Verdict On Mitchell Starc's IPL Form

Mitchell Starc has not lived up to his astronomical price tag so far in the IPL but Kolkata Knight Riders bowling coach Bharat Arun on Tuesday backed the Australia left-arm pacer, saying it’s just a “matter of time” before he hits his stride. Starc’s combined figures from the first two games read an underwhelming 8-0-100-0. “He is probably one of the most experienced bowlers in the world and also somebody who understands the conditions and adapts to it very well. I think you will a see a different version of him in the future games,” Arun said ahead of their match against Delhi Capitals here.

Returning to the IPL after nine years, Starc was bought for a record sum of Rs 24.75-crore at the auction.

Asked what conversations they are having with Starc, Arun cheekily replied: “Nothing about the price tag definitely.

“We have been talking about his strengths. I’m sure he understands what it is and what it takes to succeed. The kind of experience he brings with him having played in all the conditions, it is just a matter of time before you see Starc return in his elements,” he said.

KKR have won both their matches (Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bangalore) so far, relying on their spin bowling and their explosive batting.

With a slow wicket on offer here, KKR spinners will look to exploit the conditions.

“The biggest challenge for us would be to understand and adapt to conditions. We are up for anything. It is the same surface for both the teams,” he added. PTI TAP BS BS
