UAE pauses Gaza aid route support after Israel kills workers

The announcement comes after seven humanitarian workers with the nonprofit World Central Kitchen (WCK) were killed by an Israeli airstrike in Gaza on Monday. The UAE is the main funder of the organization’s aid route that has been leading efforts to get food by sea to Gaza, which the United Nations has warned is on the verge of famine.

On Monday, seven staff members of chef José Andrés’ WCK were killed by an Israeli air strike on an aid convoy as it delivered supplies from the landing area on the Gaza coast to a warehouse in the town of Dier al-Balah in the center of the enclave.

The convoy was hit as it was leaving the Deir al-Balah warehouse, where the team had unloaded more than 100 tons of humanitarian food aid brought to Gaza on the maritime route,” World Central Kitchen CEO Erin Gore said in a statement early Tuesday morning.

The sources close to the UAE government told Axios the UAE is pausing its humanitarian efforts via the maritime corridor pending a full investigation and assurances from Israel regarding the safety of humanitarian workers.

The UAE foreign ministry condemned the Israeli strike on the WCK convoy.

UK PM Rishi Sunak Backs Author JK Rowling Over Scottish Hate Crime Law

UK PM Rishi Sunak Backs Author JK Rowling Over Scottish Hate Crime Law

“We believe in free speech in this country”, says UK PM Rishi Sunak (File)

London:

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Tuesday came out in support of ‘Harry Potter’ author JK Rowling over her stance against a new hate crime law enforced by the devolved government of Scotland, which she says restricts free speech.

The British Indian leader made a statement about the new Hate Crime and Public Order (Scotland) Act, which came in force on Monday and led JK Rowling to issue a sharp rebuke on social media warning against the “dangers of eliminating women’s and girls’ single-sex spaces”.

The law creates a new crime of “stirring up hatred” relating to protected characteristics.

“People should not be criminalised for stating simple facts on biology. We believe in free speech in this country, and Conservatives will always protect it,” Rishi Sunak said in a statement.

In a series of social media posts on Monday, JK Rowling – a vocal defender of women’s only spaces when being balanced with the rights of transexuals – referenced several transgender women as men, including convicted prisoners, trans activists and other public figures. The award-winning Scottish author, who lives in Edinburgh, then invited police to arrest her if they believed she had committed an offence under the new law.

“I’m currently out of the country, but if what I’ve written here qualifies as an offence under the terms of the new act, I look forward to being arrested when I return to the birthplace of the Scottish Enlightenment,” writes JK Rowling on X, formerly Twitter.

JK Rowling, 58, said the members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs) who voted for the new hate crime laws had “placed higher value on the feelings of men performing their idea of femaleness, however misogynistically or opportunistically, than on the rights and freedoms of actual women and girls”.

Humza Yousaf, the Pakistani-origin First Minister of Scotland who was justice minister in the Scottish National Party (SNP) led government when the bill was passed in the Scottish Parliament Holyrood in 2021, was targeted with Islamophobic graffiti near his home in Dundee in the wake of the new law being enforced. However, he insisted it was a reminder of why such a law is needed to ensure a “zero-tolerance approach to hatred”.

Police Scotland is investigating the graffiti and said “inquiries are ongoing”.

Meanwhile, hundreds gathered outside the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh to protest against the new hate crime law for its restrictions on freedom of speech. They waved placards reading: “Truth is not hate speech” and “Protect free speech”.

The new laws were developed following an Independent Review of Hate Crime Legislation, which concluded that new specific offences relating to stirring up hatred were needed.

In Telangana, KCR's Leaders Swell Congress, BJP Ranks Ahead of Polls

In Telangana, KCR's Leaders Swell Congress, BJP Ranks Ahead of Polls

Hyderabad:

Former Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao’s Bharat Rashtra Samithi has been witnessing an exodus following its defeat in last year’s assembly election. In the run-up to the Lok Sabha polls, more than 10 senior leaders have switched sides.

More than 10 names on the BJP list are former members of the BRS. Among them are former BRS minister Eatala Rajender. A candidate from Malkajgiri, he joined the BJP in June 2021 after he was thrown out of the BRS.

But while he has been in the party for a while, many others made the switch and within hours, were nominated by the BJP.

Zaheerabad sitting MP was from BRS, quit and within hours became the BJP candidate. Bharat, son of BRS MP Ramulu was fielded from Nagarkurnool, within hours of the father and son switching parties. Aroori Ramesh was made the Warangal BJP candidate in the same way.

The Congress has been welcoming BRS leaders in a similar manner. Chevella MP Ranjith Reddy who won as the BRS candidate is now representing the Congress from the same seat.

Danam Nagender who won as BRS MLA from Khairatabad in the November 30 elections, has been fielded from Secunderabad by the Congress. The wife of former BRS minister Patnam Mahender Reddy, Sunita Mahender Reddy, who was the Vikarabad zilla parishad chairperson with the BRS, is now the Congress’s Malkajgiri candidate.

Kadiyam Kavya, whom BRS gave ticket for Warangal, has moved to the Congress and has been fielded from the same seat. Her father Kadiyam Srihari was also elected as BRS MLA in the November 30 assembly election.

Two other key leaders of BRS — Peddapalli MP Venkatesh Netha moved to Congress but have not been given ticket. Warangal MP Pasunuri Dayakar has also switched to the Congress but has not been fielded by the party.

In 2019, nine of the 17 Lok Sabha seats of the state had gone to Mr Rao’s party, four to the BJP, three to the Congress and one to Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM.

Back then, Mr Rao’s party, still called the Telangana Rashtra Samithi or TRS, dominated, given his status as the father of the statehood movement.

The slide of the party started after its change of name – a focus from state issues to national aspirations of the leader did not go down well with the electorate, many in the party had privately admitted.

Added to it were the corruption allegations, including the alleged involvement of Mr Rao’s daughter K Kavitha in the Delhi liquor case.

If BRS provided details of farmers who committed suicides, what is government good for, Dasoju Sravan questions

He said rather than extending relief to the affected families, the Chief Minister was mocking former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao and asking the opposition BRS to provide details of those who committed suicide due to crop loss.

If BRS provided details of farmers who committed suicides, what is government good for, Dasoju Sravan questions

Hyderabad: BRS senior leader Dasoju Sravan slammed Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, questioning the government’s response to the tragic deaths of 200 farmers under the Congress regime in last four months.

He said rather than extending relief to the affected families, the Chief Minister was mocking former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao and asking the opposition BRS to provide details of those who committed suicide due to crop loss.

“If we provided names, addresses and other details all the deceased farmers, what will the government do? What is the need for the government machinery comprising the Chief Minister, Cabinet Ministers, civil servants and other officials?” he questioned, while addressing the media at Telangana Bhavan on Tuesday.

In a strong counter to allegations of Revanth Reddy, Sravan said former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao initiated numerous measures to strengthen agriculture in Telangana including efforts to improve irrigation facilities, provide Rythu Bandhu and Rythu Bima, apart from uninterrupted and quality power supply for free.

“But within 100 days of the inefficient Congress rule, farmers are now forced to burn their crops withered due to lack of water rather than harvesting them,” he said.

Former Minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah, former MLAs Gadari Kishore Kumar and Balka Suman echoed the views stating that the Congress was misleading people with false propaganda once again.

They demanded to know if there was no mismanagement of water resources, how the State government was able to release water from Kaleshwaram project through Gayatri pumphouse soon after BRS chief Chandrashekhar Rao visited Nalgonda and Suryapet districts.

The blaze had broken out during construction work in the first and second floors below ground.

A fire killed at least 29 people in a 16-storey residential building in Istanbul on Tuesday, the governor of Turkey’s economic capital said, updating an earlier toll of 15 dead and eight hurt.

“The number of people who lost their lives in the fire… in Gayrettepe of Besiktas district has increased to 29,” governor Davut Gul’s office said in a statement, referring to the Istanbul neighbourhood.

“One person hurt in the fire was still being treated in hospital,” it added.

The fire began at 12:47 (0947 GMT), the office said, and was only brought under control by firefighters hours later.

Television images showed flames and a column of thick smoke rushing from upper-storey windows.

The number of people reported killed and hurt rose throughout the afternoon in a string of statements from the governor’s office, as more victims succumbed to their injuries.

The blaze had broken out during construction work in the first and second floors below ground, which housed a nightclub, Gul told reporters.
