Congress Expels Sanjay Nirupam For 6 Years After He Targets Team Thackeray

A defiant Mr Nirupam had said he would announce his next course of action on Thursday.

Capping a day of fast-moving developments, the Congress has expelled Sanjay Nirupam, a senior leader from Maharashtra, for six years for his “anti-party statements”. Earlier on Wednesday, the party had removed him from the list of star campaigners for the Lok Sabha elections and sources had said that a proposal to expel him was being prepared by the state unit to be sent to the central leadership.

The proposal was made after Mr Nirupam made a string of remarks against Congress’ INDIA ally, Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) and its leader Uddhav Thackeray after it announced some candidates for the Lok Sabha constituencies in Maharashtra – including the North West Mumbai seat, which was reportedly being eyed by the Congress leader.

Before that, he had also made remarks on the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, the convenor of another party ally, AAP, which were not in line with the Congress’ official stand.

Announcing Mr Nirupam’s expulsion late on Wednesday, Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal said in a statement, “Taking note of the complaints of indiscipline and anti-party statements, the Hon’ble Congress President has approved the expulsion of Shri Sanjay Nirupam from the party for six years with immediate effect.”

Earlier in the day, Maharashtra Congress President Nana Patole had said, “We have taken him (Mr Nirupam) off the list of star campaigners and have also initiated disciplinary action against him over the statements he made.”

After he was removed as the star campaigner, a defiant Mr Nirupam had hit out at the Congress and said he would announce his next course of action on Thursday.

Personal Attacks

The Shiv Sena (UBT), which is in the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance in Maharashtra with the Congress and the NCP, had declared its list of 16 candidates for the Lok Sabha elections on March 27. The list included the name of Amol Kirtikar – son of the sitting MP – for the North West Mumbai seat, prompting a tirade from Mr Nirupam.

“The way Shiv Sena UBT has taken five seats of Mumbai, it seems that there is a plan to bury Congress in Mumbai. It seems the Shiv Sena wants to force Congress to kneel,” the senior Congress leader, who has been a Lok Sabha MP from the Mumbai North constituency, a Rajya Sabha MP and the Mumbai unit president of the party, said.

“I appeal to the Congress leadership to intervene or end the alliance with Shiv Sena. If the Shiv Sena thinks it can fight alone, it is making a big mistake,” he added.

Taking a dig at Uddhav Thackeray over the split in the Shiv Sena engineered by the current Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Mr Nirupam called him the “bachi kuchi Shiv Sena pramukh (chief of what’s left of the Shiv Sena)”.

He also hit out at Mr Kirtikar, alleging that he was involved in the ‘Khichdi scam’ – the alleged irregularities in the distribution of food to migrant workers during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mr Nirupam’s remarks were seen as adding to the seat-sharing troubles of the Maha Vikas Aghadi, which is part of the INDIA alliance at the Centre.

‘Will Announce Decision Tomorrow’

After he was removed from the list of star campaigners, Mr Nirupam had alluded to the Congress’ accounts being frozen and said it should utilise its stationery and energy to save itself.

In a post on X, the leader wrote in Hindi, “The Congress party should not waste energy and stationery on me. It should utilise the stationery and energy to save itself since the party is experiencing a serious financial crisis. The timeframe I had given to the party ends today. I will spell out my next course of action tomorrow,” he tweeted.

The timeframe was a reference to his earlier comments giving the Congress a week to decide on ending the alliance with the Shiv Sena (UBT).

Should Mr Nirupam decide to switch sides, he is likely to be spoilt for choice as leaders from both the BJP and the Eknath Shinde faction of the Shiv Sena have said he would be welcome in their parties.

A video of the incident went viral on social media.

Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh:

A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) councillor in Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior district cleaned a choked sewer in his area and alleged that he complained several times but the municipal corporation did not act on it.

Councillor from ward 15, Devendra Rathore cleaned the sewer located in Birla Nagar in the city on Tuesday. A video of the incident also went viral on social media. Later, the municipal corporation team reached the spot and cleaned it. The team continued the cleaning activity on Wednesday as well.

“There was a big sewer problem in ward number 15 and dirty water was flooding inside the houses of residents. People were facing a lot of foul smell and the matter was also brought before the council but no one paid attention to it. After this I told the Commissioner, also requested the Mayor and raised the matter in the Council but the issue was unheard. After that I realised I will have to solve this matter myself,” Devendra Rathore told ANI.

“People have given me the vote and I must value their vote, therefore, I cleaned the sewer as no one was listening and people are facing issues. After I did the cleaning, the Municipal Corporation employees also came and started cleaning,” he added.

He further added that when he went for inspection in his area, the municipal commissioner called him and said he shouldn’t go anywhere and neither talked to officials as the Model Code of Conduct was in force.

“The commissioner told me that I should neither go anywhere nor talk to officials as the Model Code of Conduct is in force so what option do I have? The only solution I had, I myself went into the sewer and cleaned it,” he added.

Councillor Devendra Rathore also took a potshot at Mayor Sobha Sikarwar saying the municipal corporation here was under the Congress and Congress Mayor remained silent.

“The municipality here is under Congress. We have the government in the state but here we are working under the Congress’ mayor Sobha Sikarwar but she remains silent,” he added.

Nonetheless, Additional Commissioner of Gwalior Municipal Corporation, Munish Singh Sikarwar said that wherever sewer related problems arised, they were resolved immediately.

“Wherever sewer related problems arise, they are being resolved immediately. In that ward too, work was being done by the Municipal Corporation next to the sewer. If such information was received, it would also have been resolved,” Sikarwar said.

Washington: ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ has been renewed for its 21st season. Currently in its 20th season, the following season is anticipated to include 18 episodes, up from the 10-episode strike-impacted 20th season, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Meanwhile, Meg Marinis has taken over as showrunner for Shonda Rhimes’ ‘Grey’s Anatomy’. She took over with the 20th season.

Grey’s Anatomy has been renewed at ABC for its 21st season on the Disney-owned broadcast network.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, Marinis has been with Grey’s Anatomy since its third season and has worked her way up since beginning her tenure on the show as a writer’s production assistant. She then worked as a writers’ assistant and medical researcher before moving up the chain of command to executive producer, a title she held for the past four seasons before being promoted to the big chair.

“The loyalty and love of Grey’s Anatomy fans has propelled us into a historic 21st season, and I could not be more grateful,” Rhimes said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “Meg Marinis’ storytelling is a gift that continues to keep the show vibrant, compelling and alive, and I can’t wait to see what she has in store for next season.” No information about the returning cast has been provided, as Grey’s has traditionally seen turnover as part of the continuous plot. Ellen Pompeo, the show’s leading woman, is anticipated to remain active despite leaving as a series regular before season 20. Meredith Grey, played by Pompeo, continues to give her signature narration on Grey’s, and the series is executive produced by the actress and her ABC Signature-based Calamity Jane company.

Grey’s Anatomy is the longest-running primetime medical drama in television history, having surpassed ER in 2019. In addition, the drama is the longest-running primetime scripted series in ABC’s history. The massive archive of episodes just emerged on Hulu and Netflix, introducing the series to a new audience on the site.

Grey’s Anatomy becomes the third ABC series to earn an early renewal for 2024-25 broadcast season, joining Quinta Brunson’s Abbott Elementary and Ryan Murphy’s 911.

How To Tackle Mayank Yadav's Fiery Pace? Australia Great Has A Solution

Lucknow Super Giants fast bowler Mayank Yadav has become the talk of the town after producing brilliant performances against Punjab Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore. He impressed on his debut with three crucial wickets and against RCB, he was once again the top performer with the ball as he took the important wickets of Cameron Green, Rajat Patidar and Glenn Maxwell. Mayank’s performances has put him in the conversation for a possible spot in India’s T20 World Cup 2024 squad but former Australian cricket team batter Matthew Hayden came up with a plan to tackle the youngster’s rapid pace.

“One of the things that happens in this competition is that all eye balls, all those great players watching him, they are working out strategies of how they are going to play him. If you bang it on length and the pace is fast, it’s tough to hit. And the way you’ve to play someone of that pace is that you need to allow the ball to come to you. Not try to force it off the front foot or back foot. Just absorb the pressure and the ball will do the rest because of the pace of the delivery,” Hayden said.

Australia cricketer Steve Smith, who was also part of the discussion, also said that the lack of slow deliveries till now is something that batter can look to exploit against Mayank in the future.

“If you look at all those balls, there wasn’t one slower balls there, so you don’t have to worry about that at this stage. He might have it in his armoury, we haven’t seen it yet but you can probably trust to get inside the line or maybe give a bit of room and use the pace and let it come to you,” Smith said.

Former Australian cricketer Tom Moody said that Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) pacer Mayank Yadav is in the conversation for the ICC T20 World Cup, which will take place in West Indies/USA from June 1.

A three-wicket haul by Mayank and a barrage of top-class pace bowling destroyed the RCB top order and helped LSG hand the home side their third loss at M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Tuesday.

Following LSG’s win, Moody said as quoted by ESPNCricinfo that Mayank is in the conversation for the tournament, since it is important to consider the skillsets needed for the tournament during powerplay and death overs.

“He is definitely in the conversation. Whether you take that risk punting on him or not is another conversation because you also need to consider what skillset you need in that reserve fast bowler – is it someone who is a powerplay bowler, or someone who has the ability to bowl at the death, all those subtle skillsets are important when you are talking about a T20 World Cup,” said Moody.

Airborne DNA Can Be Extracted To Be Used For Forensic Analysis, Study Finds

Airborne DNA Can Be Extracted To Be Used For Forensic Analysis, Study Finds

New Delhi:

Airborne human DNA could be used in forensic analysis of crime sites that have been wiped clean of fingerprints and trace evidence, a new research has found.

Offenders are unlikely to totally prevent their DNA from being released into the environment, as human DNA can be found in the air after people have spoken or even so much as breathed, researchers explained.

While collecting trace DNA, comprising human cells, is common in criminal investigations, researchers said “environmental DNA” (eDNA) from solid surfaces, soil, water and air are providing new avenues for gathering evidence.

Comparing samples taken from air-conditioning units in offices and homes, the research team, led by Flinders University in Australia, found that human DNA could be collected on the surfaces of these units and from the air, with air samples likely representing more recent occupation and surface samples representing prior occupation.

“Our study also showed that air circulating through air-conditioning could collect human DNA, which further supports the idea that human DNA can be found in the air and settle on surfaces,” said Emily Bibbo, a PhD candidate at Flinders University’s College of Science and Engineering, and author of the study published in the journal Electrophoresis.

Biological material is routinely collected from crime scenes and exhibits, and these new methods have potential in identifying the usual users of a room as well as visitors, said Mariya Goray, senior lecturer in forensic science, Flinders University.

“It is very unlikely that an average offender, even with forensic awareness, could totally prevent their DNA from being released into the environment,” said Mariya Goray. “We now know that eDNA and eRNA shed from sources such as skin or saliva can be detected in the environment, including soil, ice, air and water.” “We may be able to use (eDNA) as evidence to prove if someone has been in the room, even if they wore gloves or wiped surfaces clean to remove the evidence,” said Bibbo.

The researchers recommended follow-up studies that can determine the best location for air collection devices, along with the appropriate time after a crime to test and acquire DNA of interest, if it is present.

"Have A Desire To Participate In Elections From Andhra Pradesh": Jaya Prada

'Have A Desire To Participate In Elections From Andhra Pradesh': Jaya Prada

Tirupati:

Former MP from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and film actress Jaya Prada on Wednesday expressed her desire to “participate” in the upcoming elections from Andhra Pradesh, adding that it all depended on the decision of the leadership of the BJP.

“I have a desire to participate in elections from Andhra Pradesh, it all depends on the decision of higher authorities in the party,” Jaya Prada told reporters after visiting Tirumala temple on her birthday.

It is, however, highly unlikely that she will be fielded from Andhra Pradesh either in the coming Assembly election or in the Lok Sabha election by the BJP, as the party has already announced the names of candidates for both of these elections.

The BJP is facing these elections in the state in alliance with TDP and Janasena. As part of the seat-sharing agreement among these parties, the BJP will contest six Lok Sabha and 10 Assembly seats.

The TDP will contest 144 Assembly and 17 Lok Sabha seats and Janasena will contest two Lok Sabha and 21 Assembly seats.

Elections for 175 Assembly and 25 Lok Sabha seats in Andhra Pradesh will be held simultaneously on May 13 and the results will be declared on June 4.

Jaya Prada also expressed her desire to be a star campaigner for the NDA candidates in the state.

TDP Chief Chandrababu Naidu said on Wednesday that his party, Janasena, and the BJP have formed an alliance to stop the atrocities of the YSRCP government led by Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy.

The TDP chief also exuded confidence in the victory of his alliance in the upcoming Andhra Pradesh Assembly and Lok Sabha elections, which will be held simultaneously in the state on May 13.

“Be it Rayalaseema or Konaseema, we are receiving a great response everywhere. There is no doubt that we are winning the upcoming elections,” Chandrababu Naidu said while addressing a public gathering here.

He claimed that people have decided to defeat the YSRCP in the coming elections.

“Like the way a hungry lion waits to hunt, people from all sections are eagerly waiting for the elections to press two buttons and defeat the YSRCP badly,” Chandrababu Naidu said.

He alleged that under the YSRCP government, the state has seen law and order deterioration and corruption.

“Konaseema is known for its peace. There was no violence here before. But the attacks, land grabbing, false cases, atrocities, commissions, caste politics, mafia kingdoms, ganja, and overall corruption have increased during the YSRCP regime,” he said.

“TDP, Janasena, and BJP have come before the people as a team to stop the atrocities of the YSRCP,” he added

‘Unconscionable’: UN chief blasts deadly Israeli attack on aid workers

The United Nations secretary-general has sharply condemned a recent Israeli attack that killed seven aid workers in the central part of the Gaza Strip, which is enduring a genocidal Israeli war.

“This is unconscionable — but it is an inevitable result of the way the war is being conducted,” Antonio Guterres said on Tuesday.

The victims belonged to the World Central Kitchen (WCK), which is responsible for distributing food aid among the Palestinian people in Gaza. They perished during the attack that had targeted the city of Deir al-Balah in the coastal sliver earlier in the day.

Among the dead were Australian, British, Palestinian, Polish, and US-Canadian employees.

According to Francesca Albanese, the UN special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories, the Israeli military deliberately  killed the aid workers.

“Knowing how Israel operates, my assessment is that Israeli forces intentionally killed WCK aid workers so that donors would pull out and civilians in Gaza could continue to be starved quietly,” Albanese wrote in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

The incident brings “the number of aid workers killed in this conflict to 196 — including more than 175 members of our own UN staff,” Guterres said.

“It demonstrates yet again the urgent need for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire, the unconditional release of all hostages, and the expansion of humanitarian aid into Gaza — as the Security Council demanded in its resolution.”

The UN Security Council passed the resolution last week, calling for a ceasefire in the war that the Israeli regime began on October 7 after Gaza’s resistance groups carried out a retaliatory operation against the usurping entity.

Since the start of the offensive, the Tel Aviv regime has killed around 33,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children.

“The resolution must be implemented without delay,” Guterres said.

Hyderabad:

A 35-year-old farmer died after being attacked by a wild elephant in Kumaram Bheem Asifabad district of Telangana on Wednesday, the forest department said.

The incident occurred on the outskirts of Burepalli village in Chinthalamanepally mandal of the district when the victim was working in an agricultural field, they said.

“For the first time a wild elephant entered Telangana from Maharashtra… there are no wild elephants in Telangana. It seems a herd of 70-75 elephants is moving along the other side of Pranahita river in Maharashtra. One of the elephants–a male tusker, strayed into Telangana by crossing Pranahita,” a senior forest department official told news agency PTI.

“Our Maharashtra counterparts had informed us in advance about the movement (of elephants) and we have been monitoring. We had requested the villagers not to venture that side. In spite of our warning one person had gone to the field where he was attacked by the elephant and died,” the official said.

The forest officials have cordoned off the entire area to make sure that elephant does not enter the village, he said.

“… if the elephant does not go back by tonight, then tomorrow we will have to drive it away,” the official added.
