Hualien: Rescuers searched for dozens of people out of contact Thursday a day after Taiwan’s strongest earthquake in a quarter century damaged buildings, caused multiple rockslides and killed nine people.

In the eastern coastal city of Hualien near the epicenter, workers used an excavator to put construction materials around the base of a damaged building to stabilize it and prevent a collapse. Mayor Hsu Chen-wei previously said 48 residential buildings were damaged. Some of the damaged buildings tilted at precarious angles with their ground floors crushed.

More than 1,000 people were injured in the quake that struck Wednesday morning. Of the nine dead, at least four were struck inside Taroko National Park, a tourist attraction famous for its scenes of canyons and cliffs in Hualien County, about 150 kilometers (90 miles) from the island’s capital Taipei.

Nearly 150 people were either still trapped or out of contact Thursday, the National Fire Agency said.

About two dozen tourists and some others were stranded in the park. The health and welfare ministry said 64 others were workers at a rock quarry. Six workers from another quarry were airlifted from the area where access was cut off because roads were damaged by falling rocks.

Several people, including six university students, were also reported to be trapped. Around 50 people, mostly employees at the hotel earlier reported to be in the national park, were out of contact with authorities.

For hours after the quake, TV showed neighbors and rescue workers lifting residents through windows and onto the street from damaged buildings where the shaking had fused shut the doors. It wasn’t clear Thursday morning if any people were trapped in damaged buildings.

The temblor and aftershocks caused many landslides and damaged roads, bridges and tunnels. The national legislature and sections of Taipei’s main airport had minor damage.

Taiwan measured the initial quake’s strength as 7.2 magnitude while the U.S. Geological Survey put it at 7.4. The Central Weather Administration has recorded more than 300 aftershocks from Wednesday morning into Thursday.

Taiwan is regularly jolted by earthquakes and its population is among the best prepared for them. It also had stringent construction requirements to ensure buildings are quake-resistant.

The economic losses caused by the quake are still unclear. The self-ruled island is the leading manufacturer of the world’s most sophisticated computer chips and other high-technology items that are sensitive to seismic events.

Hualien was last struck by a deadly quake in 2018 that killed 17 people and brought down a historic hotel. Taiwan’s worst recent quake on Sept. 21, 1999, a magnitude 7.7 temblor that caused 2,400 deaths, injuring around 100,000 and destroying thousands of buildings.

"Embarrassed" Ricky Ponting Blasts DC Over "Unacceptable" Defeat vs KKR

After the 106-run loss to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) match, Delhi Capitals (DC) head coach Ricky Ponting said that he was embarrassed with his side’s first half of the game and how his side conceded too many runs while bowling at a slow-over rate. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) produced a remarkable performance in all facets of the game against Delhi Capitals in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 at the ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam on Wednesday.

Following the match in the post-match press conference, Ponting said, “I was almost embarrassed with our first half of the game today – to concede that many runs. It took us two hours as well to bowl our overs, so we were two overs behind again, which means the guys bowling the last two overs only get to bowl with four fielders outside the circle.”

“There are a lot of things that happened in this game that are unacceptable; we have to fix [them] immediately to go forward in this tournament,” the former Australian skipper added.

Ponting said that KKR were relentless throughout the game.

“They got off to a flying start in the powerplay. They were around 90 runs after six overs. That phase is not ideal; if that happens at the start of the game, then you are always trying to find your way back into the game and they did not allow us to do that today. They were relentless. We have got to be very critical on ourselves,” Ponting said.

DC skipper Pant scored a back-to-back half-century during the match, but during the game, he called a physio while batting. Ponting said it might have been just tiredness and he was moving pretty well while batting.

“I saw he called a physio out. It might have just been a bit of tiredness. Looked like he was moving pretty well when he batted. I think we should just concentrate on the way he batted tonight. I did not see him hobbling at all after he called the physio out. I saw him doing a little bit of stretching, so there might be a little bit of cramp,” the DC head coach said.

However, the coach said that he is pleased with Pant’s batting and a situation where he needed to attack was something he needed to get his confidence back.

“Pleased for him, what he did with the bat. A situation like that, where he had to go out and attack from the start is probably a scenario that he needed just to get some confidence back. He is actually had two good games with the bat now which is great,” said Ponting.

Talking about skipper Rishabh missing taking a DRS against Sunil Narine during KKR’s batting, Ponting said that, “Narine was missed and then Shreyas Iyer was missed later on. I am not sure what happened there. Obviously, Rishabh had not heard them. Other fielders and bowlers on the ground actually heard something on both occasions,” he added.

Trump Leads Biden In 6 Of 7 Battleground States, Shows Latest Opinion Poll

Donald Trump leads between two and eight percentage points in six battleground states.

Washington:

Ahead of the upcoming US election scheduled for November, President Joe Biden is trailing behind his main opponent Donald Trump in six of the seven battleground states, according to a latest opinion poll.

Voters are broadly dissatisfied with the national economy and there are deep doubts about Biden’s capabilities and job performance, the survey conducted by the Wall Street Journal revealed.

Trump leads between two and eight percentage points in six battleground states of Pennsylvania, Michigan, Arizona, Georgia, Nevada and North Carolina. However, Biden is leading Trump by three points in Wisconsin.

In every state in the survey, negative views of the president’s job performance outweigh positive views by 16 percentage points or more, with the gap topping 20 points in four states. By contrast, Trump earns an unfavourable job review for his time in the White House in only a single state – Arizona – where negative marks outweigh positive ones by 1 percentage point, The Wall Street Journal reported.

According to Real Clear Politics, which keeps tracks of all the major national polls, Trump and Biden are in a neck-to-neck fight this fall. An average of major national polls shows that Trump is leading Biden by 0.8 percentage points.

“Biden and Trump both easily became their party’s presumptive nominees last month, but each candidate will face a long and difficult campaign in a rematch of the 2020 contest. In a race expected to be razor-tight, a handful of battleground states will likely determine the winner,” The Hill newspaper said Wednesday.

'I'm A Fan Of Whiskey': Chief Justice, Senior Lawyer's Courtroom Banter

The courtroom erupted in laughter.

New Delhi:

Senior advocate Dinesh Dwivedi and Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud shared a jovial moment in the Supreme Court on Wednesday.

Mr Dwivedi, with a hint of jest, attributed his multi-coloured hair to the recent Holi festivities. “Apologies for my colourful hair,” he chuckled, adding, “It is because of Holi. This is the disadvantage of having a lot of kids and grandkids around. You can’t save yourself.”

Chief Justice Chandrachud seized the opportunity to add a dash of humour to the conversation. “Nothing to do with alcohol?” he quipped, evoking laughter from those present.

Mr Dwivedi, joining in the laughter, playfully admitted, “It does. Holi means partly alcohol… and I must confess… I am a fan of whiskey.”

The courtroom erupted in laughter.

A nine-judge Constitution bench was hearing a case on industrial alcohol. The bench deliberated whether industrial alcohol is the same as edible alcohol that is available in the markets and the overlapping powers between the Centre and state governments on industrial alcohol production.

Mr Dwivedi, representing the state of Uttar Pradesh, argued that all forms of alcohol come under state control.

New Delhi:

Kareena Kapoor, Kriti Sanon, and Tabu’s latest film Crew made a debut at the box office, minting Rs 30 crore over its opening weekend. However, the movie experienced a decline in earnings, with a 60% drop on its first Monday. This downward trend persisted, with earnings further decreasing on Tuesday, marking a gradual slowdown in box office momentum. According to a report in Sacnilk, Crew collected Rs 3.25 crore on Wednesday, maintaining a steady stream of revenue despite the weekday lull. The film registered an overall 11.60% Hindi occupancy on Wednesday, contributing to its cumulative six-day earnings of Rs 40.70 crore.

Crew revolves around three air hostesses portrayed by Tabu, Kareena, and Kriti, whose fortunes take a dramatic turn when they stumble upon a dead passenger smuggling gold biscuits, amidst the backdrop of their airline Kohinoor facing bankruptcy.

Reportedly, Crew has been released across 2000 theatres. It premiered in over 75 countries, spanning more than 1100 locations. The estimated budget for the film, covering production and advertising expenses, reportedly stands around Rs 60 crore.

Crew opened to largely mixed reviews. Film critic Saibal Chatterjee, in his review for NDTV, gave the film 2 stars out of 5 and wrote, “Crew would have been much more fun if only it knew how to buoy things up with strokes of genuine inspiration. Yes, that is what is sorely missing in a film that goes for gold but fails to find a source of sustained sparkle.

Produced under the banners of Balaji Telefilms and Anil Kapoor Film & Communications Network, Crew not only features the three leading ladies but also includes Diljit Dosanjh, Kapil Sharma, Saswata Chatterjee, Rajesh Sharma, and Kulbhushan Kharbanda in its ensemble cast.

Elon Musk’s X platform launches Community Notes in India ahead of elections

New Delhi: Elon Musk on Thursday said that his X platform has activated the Community Notes feature — a user-based fact-checking programme — in India, as the country prepares for general elections.

Musk-owned social media platform also welcomed new contributors in India for its community notes feature.

“Community Notes now active in India,” wrote the Tesla and SpaceX CEO.

The company said that its first contributors in the country “are joining today, and we’ll be expanding over time”.

“As always, we’ll monitor quality to ensure that notes are found helpful by people from different points of view,” said the X platform.

Community Notes now has contributors in 69 countries around the world.

“We’re adding more regularly,” said the Musk-run platform.

In December 2022, the company first enabled the ability for people to look at ‘Community Notes’ related to posts globally.

“Community Notes aim to create a better informed world by empowering people on X to collaboratively add context to potentially misleading posts,” according to the company.

Contributors can leave notes on any post and if enough contributors from different points of view rate that note as helpful, the note will be publicly shown on a post.

“A post with a Community Note will not be labelled, removed, or addressed by X unless it is found to be violating the X Rules,” said the company.

Israel mobilizes reservists amid Iranian threats to air defense

Jerusalem: Israel’s military has announced that it is reinforcing its aerial defence system with reserve soldiers amid escalating tensions with Iran.

In a statement on Wednesday, the military said, “It was decided to increase manpower and draft reserve soldiers to the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) Aerial Defense Array”, adding the move followed a situational assessment.

On Tuesday, Iran vowed retaliation against the “Israeli airstrike” on the Iranian embassy in Syria on Monday night.

Seven Iranians, including Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a veteran commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in Syria, and his deputy, were killed in the attack, Xinhua news agency reported.

Israel has not claimed responsibility for the attack, which stoked further escalation in the Middle East.

"Cricket Is All About Batting": KKR Star Sunil Narine After 85-Run Knock

After his 85-run knock against Delhi Capitals (DC) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) bowling allrounder Sunil Narine said that cricket is all about batting. Narine opened for the Kolkata-based franchise and played an 85-run knock from just 39 balls at a strike rate of 217.95. The Caribbean allrounder smashed 7 fours and sixes during his time on the crease. While speaking at the post-match presentation, Narine said he was pleased to contribute with the bat. However, the 35-year-old added that he enjoys his bowling.

When asked about opening with Philip Salt for KKR, he added that the English batter takes the pressure off from his partner.

“Cricket is all about batting, so to contribute with the bat is pleasing but I also enjoy my bowling. (On batting down the order with Abu Dhabi Knight Riders) We had sufficient batters, so the opening was not needed then. At the end of the day, it is about what the team requires. Batting with Salt is good, he takes the pressure off me so it’s good to bat with him. On a good wicket like that, we bowled well and were on the money, so a total team effort from us tonight,” Narine said.

Summarizing the match, KKR’s target of 273 turned out to be too much for DC as they gave in to pressure and ended up suffering a 106-run defeat.

The pace duo of Mitchell Starc and Vaibhav Arora bagged two wickets each to reduce DC to 33/4 in the powerplay.

These early blows derailed DC’s approach to chasing down the massive total which got more challenging with each delivery.

Eventually, the required rate turned out to be too much as they ended up suffering a 106-run defeat.
