CISF jawan shoots himself dead at Delhi Metro station

New Delhi: A CISF constable allegedly killed himself using his service rifle at the Nangloi Metro Station on Thursday, officials said. The incident took place around 7 am.

The body of the deceased jawan, Shahre Kishore, was recovered from near the X-ray baggage scanner, they said.

The constable is said to have joined the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) in 2014. Preliminary investigation suggests that the jawan, deployed in the CISF unit that guards the Delhi Metro, killed himself using his service weapon, they said.

An inquiry is being undertaken by the paramilitary force apart from the Delhi Police, the officials said.

Patients at al-Shifa hospital will die if not evacuated: WHO chief

The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that failure to quickly carry out medical evacuations following the destruction of al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza could lead to further fatalities.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus at a media briefing on Wednesday commented on the destruction of al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City following the Israeli army’s two-week raid, saying “the situation looks disastrous.”

The urgency to speed up the evacuation process was emphasized by the WHO chief, as he expressed concerns about the potential loss of numerous lives if action is not taken promptly.

“The people who need medical evacuation will increase, and medical evacuation is already slow,” Tedros said, adding that “people will die because they will not get the services either from Shifa or because of slow evacuation, because they cannot be evacuated.”

He also added that he is “appalled” that the al-Shifa hospital has been put out of action and that much of it has been badly damaged or destroyed.

Al-Shifa was the largest hospital and main referral center in the Gaza Strip, with 750 beds, 26 operating rooms, 32 intensive care rooms, a dialysis department and a central laboratory.

Israel claims Hamas fighters operate from in and around hospitals, which the Palestinian resistance movement and medical staff reject.

Tedros reiterated his call for hospitals in Gaza to be “respected and protected” and “not be used as battlefields.”

The WHO chief also said that only 10 of Gaza’s 36 hospitals are still able to function even partially and that WHO will continue to support those hospitals to deliver services as best they can.

He added that the UN agency is seeking to visit the location where Al-Shifa stood in order to engage with the staff and assess the extent of salvageable resources.

According to WHO, since the Israeli assault on Gaza on October 7, 906 attacks on health care in Gaza, the West Bank, the occupied territories and Lebanon have been verified, resulting in 736 deaths and 1,014 injuries.

Horrific killing of aid workers highlights dangers in Gaza

In the same address, the WHO chief praised the seven aid workers who were killed in an Israeli airstrike in central Gaza on Monday, for their service in Gaza and for putting themselves in harm’s way to help others.

“Delays and denials of humanitarian missions not only prevent us from reaching those in need, but also impact other operations and deliveries by diverting scarce resources,” he said.

Tedros added that the “horrific” killing of the aid workers highlights “the extreme danger” under which humanitarians operate in Gaza.

More than 180 days into the war, the regime has achieved no objectives despite killing at least 32,975 people in Gaza and injuring 75,577 , mostly women and children.

Tel Aviv has also blocked water, food, and electricity to Gaza, plunging the coastal strip into a humanitarian crisis.

Last month, the United Nations warned that in the absence of any changes in the war, Gaza was on course to experience all-out famine.

Premier League: Foden hat-trick drives Man City past Aston Villa

Manchester: Phil Foden struck a wonderful hat-trick as Manchester City made it 24 matches unbeaten across all competitions with a 4-1 victory over Aston Villa at the Etihad Stadium.

The result keep City within one point of Arsenal following the Gunners’ 2-0 win over Luton Town, while Pep Guardiola side sit level with Liverpool ahead of the Reds’ meeting with Sheffield United on Thursday.

City were relentless in attack and it was no surprise when the opener came in the 11th minute. Driving from the right, Foden slid the ball down the line for Jeremy Doku, who picked out Rodrigo perfectly. The Spaniard didn’t have to break stride as he hammered it high into Robin Olsen’s goal.

Villa only required nine minutes to level, though, as Duran stayed onside and picked out the bottom-right corner superbly after Morgan Rogers’ sumptuous pass in behind caught City napping.

Foden restored City’s lead with a textbook free-kick on the stroke of half-time. He made it 3-1 shortly after the hour mark as City moved through the gears, stroking a first-time finish into the bottom-right corner upon taking in Rodri’s pass.

Foden’s third, arriving just nine minutes later, was the pick of the bunch as he shifted the ball onto his left foot before firing into the top-right corner from 20 yards out.

It’s his third City hat-trick and second of the season after a stunning display at Brentford in February.

Foden’s hat-trick was the 40th by a Man City player in the Premier League; only Liverpool (42) and Arsenal (41) have had more in the competition. Of those 40 Man City hat-tricks, 24 have come under Guardiola.

New Delhi: Gold prices, on Thursday, soared to a new lifetime high of Rs 69,908 per 10 gm on India’s Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) after the price of the precious metal scaled a new all-time high in the international market for the seventh consecutive trading day.

Gold futures contract on the MCX for June 2024 expiry opened at Rs 69,868 per 10 gm in morning trade, after which it soared to Rs 69,908 per 10 gm level following news of the precious metal scaling high of $2,323.70 per ounce in the international market.

Gold prices have now been scaling record highs over each of the last seven trading sessions. According to market experts, the latest surge came after US Fed Chairman Jerome Powell’s speech on Wednesday that appeared to confirm the interest rate cut in the near-term. Lower interest rates make investments in financial instruments less lucrative and this tends to trigger the switch to buying gold.

Gold prices have gained close to 11 per cent so far this year as it is seen as a safe investment amid geopolitical and economic uncertainty in the wake of escalating tensions triggered by the Israel-Hamas conflict and the Russia-Ukraine war.

Central banks of various countries, led by China, have also been buying gold in large quantities which has contributed to the price rise.

The demand for gold in the Indian market is fuelled by the need for the precious metal in weddings as it is gifted to brides and grooms in large quantities as jewellery. However, jewellers are of the view that the soaring gold prices are dampening this demand. This is also reflected in the declining imports of the precious metal, according to them

Ten Years After MH370, Malaysia Air Seeks to Shed Troubled Past

Malaysian Airlines aircraft on the tarmac at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

Mention Malaysia Airlines and most peoples’ thoughts will turn to the enduring mystery of the disappearance of Flight MH370 a decade ago and the tragic shooting down of MH17 just months later.

Now, after posting its first net profit in more than 10 years, Chief Executive Officer Izham Ismail wants to write a new chapter – shedding the carrier’s troubled past and transforming it into a well-run, consistently profitable airline.

“The perception from the public is that this was a laid-back organization,” Izham, who is managing director of the carrier’s parent Malaysia Aviation Group, said in an interview. “But the new Malaysia Airlines is different, we are creating an organization that is hungry.”

Izham said 2024 will be a “year of credibility” for the airline, as it seeks to prove that consecutive years of operating profit weren’t a fluke caused by the post-pandemic surge in airfares and travel demand. He then aims to turn Malaysia Airlines into a premium carrier by the end of the decade.

Malaysia Airlines has undergone five turnaround programs since the 1997 Asian financial crisis, and was delisted from Malaysia’s stock exchange and taken private by sovereign wealth fund Khazanah Nasional Bhd. after the twin disasters of MH370 and MH17 – in which 534 people died.

The airline had turned to two foreign bosses – Aer Lingus Group Plc veteran Christoph Mueller and former Ryanair Holdings Plc executive Peter Bellew – to revive its fortunes, but both lasted about a year in their roles, before Izham, who has been with the carrier since 1979, took the reins in December 2017.

The former pilot, who is generally addressed as ‘Captain’ by his colleagues and peers, led Malaysia Aviation Group – which derives most of its income from the carrier – to a 766 million ringgit ($161 million) net profit in 2023, its first since 2010. It also posted an operating profit in 2022.

Underscoring its revival, the airline last month signed a multi-year deal to become English soccer club Manchester United’s commercial airline partner. Izham said the agreement was part of an existing marketing budget and came “dirt cheap,” but didn’t disclose the price.

Now the longest serving chief executive in the airline’s history, the 63-year-old is “at the crossroads” on whether to continue after his contract expires in December. “But we have a pool of successors ready to take on my role at any time,” he said.

Izham has built a C-suite leadership with an average age of 46, which he is banking on to provide “continuity” to the business plan he has put in place.

That plan aims to have Malaysia Airlines among the world’s top 10 by the end of the decade, although Izham admits its current products are “inferior” to premium segment leaders such as Singapore Airlines Ltd. and Qatar Airways – which the carrier is looking to emulate. Both carriers have reported record profits after staging a faster comeback from the pandemic.

With 5 billion ringgit, or just over $1 billion, in cash reserves, Izham said that the airline can start investing in its products – such as revamping its fleet, catering, and upgrading seats. It also has a further unused 2.3 billion ringgit of capital from Khazanah.

In other highlights from the interview, Izham said:

The airline is looking to add at least another 25 narrowbody plane orders by the end of 2024, with the winning bidder to be named later this year

The carrier is also set to take up an option to add another 20 Airbus A330neo orders to its existing order of 20 planes. The first deliveries will begin this year

The airline is currently taking delivery of 25 Boeing 737-Max 8 jets through 2026

Carrier aims to have a fleet of 50 narrowbodies and 50 widebodies by 2033

There’s no “urgency” to relist, and the company would need three consecutive years of net profitability and to “consistently look pretty” before considering such a move. “The upside of being a private entity is that the decision making and execution is fast,” he said.

International market revenue share has grown to 85% from 55% since 2021, allowing the airline to hold 42% of its cash reserves in US dollars

The airline aims to increase frequency of flights to Australia, using Kuala Lumpur as a hub for passengers from Europe

In new message, US urges Iran not to target American bases

US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller (File photo)

State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller says the US sent a message to Iran urging it not to target American bases and forces after the Israeli regime attacked the Iranian consulate in the Syrian capital.

Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday, Miller noted that the message said the United States “was not involved” in Monday’s deadly airstrikes on the consular annex of Iran’s embassy in Damascus.

“I will just say that we made very clear to the Iranians that we had no involvement in this strike, we didn’t know about it at the time, and we warned them not to use this attack as a pretext to attack US facilities or personnel,” he said.

Asked whether messages were conveyed to Iran through an intermediary, he replied, “We have the ability to send messages, very clear messages, to Iran both directly and indirectly, and we do so when it’s in our interest.”

On Monday afternoon, Israeli warplanes bombed the Iranian consulate, situated next to the embassy building in Damascus’s Mezzeh district.

The air raid killed 13 people, including seven members of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) who were on an advisory mission to Syria.

Iranian officials have emphasized the country’s right to deliver a firm response to the Israeli crime.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said Israel’s biggest supporter, the United States, should be “answerable” over the terrorist attack that violated all international obligations and conventions.

US says Palestinian statehood cannot be established through UN

After vowing to block a push by Palestine to become a full member of the United Nations, the United States says the world body is not an appropriate venue to negotiate Palestinian statehood.

US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller told reporters on Wednesday that although Washington does “support the establishment of an independent Palestinian state”, the venue through which the Palestinian statehood should be discussed would not be the UN.

“That is something that should be done through direct negotiations through the parties, something we are pursuing at this time, and not at the United Nations,” he stressed.

Miller, however, did not explicitly say that Washington would veto such a bid if it reaches the UN Security Council.

He also said that US Secretary of State Antony Blinken had so far tried his best to help establish what he called “security guarantees” for the Israeli regime as part of the groundwork for a Palestinian state.

Miller’s comments came just a day after Robert Wood, the US deputy ambassador to the UN, vowed to block a new attempt by the Palestinians for full membership in the UN.

Supporters of the Palestinians’ request for full membership in the United Nations asked the UN Security Council on Tuesday to revive their application for admission submitted in 2011.

The fresh bid, addressed to the UNSC president, included the names of 140 countries that have recognized a Palestinian state, including members of the 22-nation Arab League, the 57-nation Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and the 120-member Nonaligned Movement.

“Our position has not changed,” Wood stressed, reiterating Washington’s stance which claims that a full UN membership for Palestine should follow a negotiated peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians.

Back in September 2011, President Mahmoud Abbas failed in his attempt to make Palestine the 194th member of the UN as he could not get the required support of nine of the UNSC’s 15 members.

Even if he had managed to get the required support at the time, the US had promised to veto any UNSC resolution endorsing Palestinian membership.

However, Palestinians succeeded by more than a two-thirds majority in having their status raised from a UN observer to a non-member observer state in November 2012.

Under longstanding legislation by Congress, the US is required to sever financial support for UN agencies that give full membership to a Palestinian state.

Wood stressed that once the UN agrees to make Palestine its new member, “funding would be cut off to the UN system, so we’re bound by US law.”

“Our hope is that they don’t pursue that, but that’s up to them,” he added.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has for decades opposed the Palestinian statehood.
