KTR terms dead monkeys in overhead water tank in Nalgonda, as shameful

Hyderabad: BRS working president KT Rama Rao expressed shock over discovery of dead monkeys in the overhead tanks of Nandikonda municipality, which supplied drinking water to around 50 families in the town. He termed it a shameful state of affairs within the Telangana Municipal department.

Taking to ‘X’, Rama Rao observed that periodical cleaning and routine maintenance, which are standard protocols to be followed, are being neglected. “Governance has been in shambles because the Congress government prioritised politics over public health,” he said.

Around 30 dead monkeys were discovered in an overhead tank located in Nandikonda by local municipal authorities on Wednesday. The monkeys are believed to have fallen into the overhead tanks when they attempted to drink water and got trapped leading to their drowning.

"Only Lucky Few": Jayant Chaudhary Mocks Akhilesh Yadav's Meerut Flip-Flop

'Only Lucky Few': Jayant Chaudhary Mocks Akhilesh Yadav's Meerut Flip-Flop

RLD chief Jayant Chaudhary (File).

New Delhi:

Rashtriya Lok Dal chief Jayant Chaudhary has mocked former ally Akhilesh Yadav amid speculation his Samajwadi Party will replace – a second time – its candidate for the Meerut Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh. The RLD boss posted a brief post on X (formerly Twitter) ‘congratulating’ the “lucky ones in the opposition (who) will get a chance, for a few hours” to contest in the 2024 general election.

“And those who did not get tickets, their fate is…” he wrote.

Mr Chaudhary’s jab came hours after talk the SP could replace its second-choice Meerut candidate Atul Pradhan with a third-choice – Sunita Verma. The party last week named Bhanu Pratap Singh for the contest, but backed down after local leaders signaled unease with the choice of an ‘outsider’.

Akhilesh Yadav was personally involved in the first course correction, sources have indicated, meeting with local leaders to understand their concerns, and pulled the trigger for second too.

The party’s second choice – Mr Pradhan – is the MLA from UP’s Sardhana Assembly segment. Its third choice – Mrs Verma – is a former Mayor and the wife of two-time MLA Yogesh Verma; both were expelled from Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party in 2019 and joined the SP two years later.

The second swap – fielding Mrs Verma – is because she is a Dalit candidate and Meerut is home to around four lakh Dalits. Mr Pradhan is from the Gujjar community, of whom there are less than a lakh.

The Meerut seat has been a BJP stronghold for the past 15 years; Rajendra Agarwal has held this seat for the saffron party since 2009. Mr Agarwal, though, is not in line for a fourth consecutive win because the BJP has fielded Arun Govil, who played Lord Ram in the popular TV series Ramayana.

Mr Govil is part of the BJP’s calculated push in western UP, where the party faltered in 2019.

Bringing Mr Chaudhary on board is crucial in that context, since the RLD has sway among Jats and farmers in that region. The RLD and the BJP reached an agreement in February, a month after Mr Chaudhary and Akhilesh Yadav struck a deal. The switch came after the BJP awarded a posthumous Bharat Ratna to former Prime Minister Charan Singh, who was Mr Chuadhary’s grandfather.

In the 2019 election the BJP won only 19 of 27 Lok Sabha seats in western UP – down from 24 in 2014. The BJP has set itself a target of 370+ seats on its own in this election.

To achieve that goal, the BJP will need to maximise returns from UP, a state that sends 80 MPs to the Lok Sabha and one which has been the party’s unshakeable bastion in recent elections.

Two of those 80 seats will be contested by the RLD; Bijnor and Baghpat have been allotted to the party, and Chandan Chauhan and Rajkumar Sangwan have been named its candidates. The latter is crucial since it is viewed as a stronghold of Mr Chaudhary’s family; it elected his father Ajit Singh seven times.

The state will vote in all seven phases of the 2024 election, which begins April 19. Meerut will vote in the second phase – on April 26. All results will be declared on June 4.

FM: Iran expects EU to condemn Israel's attack on Syria consulate

Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian says Iran expects the European Union to take a “realistic and immediate” move to condemn the recent Israeli terrorist attack on the country’s diplomatic premises in Syria.

In a telephone conversation on Wednesday, Amir-Abdollahian and European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell discussed the Israeli terrorist attack on the Consular Section of Iran’s embassy in Damascus, which killed seven military members of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC).

He added that Israel attacked the diplomatic premises in violation of all international laws and principles as European officials have been urging Iran to exercise self-restraint.

Referring to the killing of six Syrian citizens, including a mother and her child, in addition to the Iranian military advisors in the attack, the top Iranian diplomat emphasized that Israel completely breached regional peace and security as well as security of diplomats and diplomatic missions.

Amir-Abdollahian wondered how the EU would react if a similar attack had hit a Western embassy in Ukraine.

On Monday, Israeli warplanes bombed the Consular Section of the Iranian Embassy in the Mezzeh neighborhood in Damascus.

A senior commander of the IRGC’s Quds Force, Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, and his deputy General Mohammad Hadi Haji Rahimi were among the seven Iranian martyrs of the terrorist attack.

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said on Wednesday that Israel will receive a slap in the face for its terrorist attack.

Amir-Abdollahian further said Israel’s genocide and war crimes continue in Gaza with the US support.

The United States will be the one responsible for the spillover of the tensions across the region if it refuses to show firm determination to stop supporting Israel’s war crimes,he emphasized.

The EU foreign policy chief, for his part, said the bloc believes that Israel’s attack on the Iranian diplomatic premises was in contravention of efforts to de-escalate tensions in the region.

Borrell noted that he would share Iran’s serious concerns with the EU members and called on Iran to keep exercising restraint.

Pointing to the developments in Gaza, he said EU’s efforts to stop the war in Gaza have unfortunately not been successful so far but the bloc would continue its measures to end the war.

The UN Security Council passed a resolution last week, calling for a ceasefire in the war that Israel began on October 7 after Gaza’s resistance groups carried out a retaliatory operation against the usurping entity.

“The resolution must be implemented without delay,” UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has said.

Since the start of the offensive, the Tel Aviv regime has killed at least 33,037 Palestinians, most of them women and children, and wounded 75,668.

US asks Iran not to target its bases to revenge Israel strike

Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday, Miller noted that the message said the United States “was not involved” in Monday’s deadly airstrikes on the consular annex of Iran’s embassy in Damascus, Press TV reported.

“I will just say that we made very clear to the Iranians that we had no involvement in this strike, we didn’t know about it at the time, and we warned them not to use this attack as a pretext to attack US facilities or personnel,” he said.

Asked whether messages were conveyed to Iran through an intermediary, he replied, “We have the ability to send messages, very clear messages, to Iran both directly and indirectly, and we do so when it’s in our interest.”

On Monday afternoon, Israeli warplanes bombed the Iranian consulate, situated next to the embassy building in Damascus’s Mezzeh district.

The air raid killed 13 people, including seven members of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) who were on an advisory mission to Syria.

Iranian officials have emphasized the country’s right to deliver a firm response to the Israeli crime.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said Israel’s biggest supporter, the United States, should be “answerable” over the terrorist attack that violated all international obligations and conventions.

Sangareddy: Former Minister T Harish Rao has demanded that the State government file criminal cases against SB Organics Limited for operating an expired reactor and payment of Rs 50 lakh ex gratia for the kin of the deceased in the reactor blast which claimed 6 lives so far, a government job for a family member and Rs 25 lakh for the injured persons.

The Former Minister visited MNR Medical College Hospital on Thursday where 12 of the 30 injured were undergoing treatment. Later, he visited the SB Organics Limited where he interacted with the family members of the deceased and injured.

Speaking to news reports, he said the employees claimed that the management had operated an expired reactor which led to the accident.

Accusing the government and company  management of not taking care of the deceased and injured family members, Rao urged the government to provide free treatment in corporate hospitals to all the injured besides arranging ambulances to the dead bodies to help the kin to take the bodies to their native places.

Actor Raadhika Sarathkumar boosts TN BJP’s prospects in Virudhunagar

Chennai: The Virudhunagar Lok Sabha constituency, where popular south Indian actor Raadhika Sarathkumar is contesting on a BJP ticket, has emerged as one of the four top winnable seats for the party.

BJP is focussing on four seats in Tamil Nadu: Coimbatore, Virudhunagar, Tirunelveli and Kanniyakumari.

Raadhika and her husband, top Tamil actor, Sarathkumar merged their All India Samathuva Makkal Katchi with BJP during the run-up to the elections, and Raadhika is now contesting the seat on a BJP ticket. Sarathkumar was a Rajya Sabha member and also a legislator.

BJP has put its stake high in the constituency, which is home to the fireworks industry. This industry is the largest in the country with a volume of Rs 6,000 crore and employs more than one lakh people directly and indirectly. This industry will have a major say in the elections.

BJP is banking on the popularity of Raadhika, who has been a top heroine of southern movies.

In the 2019 general elections, Congress candidate Manickam Tagore won by a majority of 1,54,554 votes, defeating the nearest DMDK rival, R. Alagarsamy in this constituency.

Raadhika Sarathkumar is facing sitting MP, Manickam Tagore and V. Vijaya Prabhakaran, son of late Tamil superstar Vijayakanth, who is contesting on a DMDK ticket.

The principal opposition party in Tamil Nadu, AIADMK, which was part of NDA in 2019 Lok Sabha polls and 2021 Assembly elections, is now not aligned with BJP.

Zacharias Joseph, a political analyst based out of Madurai, while speaking to IANS said: “BJP fielding Raadhika Sarathkumar was a master stroke and the party has advanced much due to this move. While DMDK candidate Vijaya Prabhakaran is a new entrant, his father late Tamil superstar Vijayakanth is highly popular in the region. Manickam Tagore of the Congress being a sitting MP, Virudhunagar will witness a tough three-cornered fight.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be speaking at a public programme in Virudhunagar constituency on April 14, and the BJP leadership is expecting a huge leap in its fortunes.

Raadhika Sarathkumar, while speaking to IANS, said: “BJP is in the lead and we are working like a well-oiled machine. The constituency lacks development and there are a lot of things to do here. You can see for yourself the huge public response to our programmes. The Prime Minister’s visit will be the game changer and we are in winning mode.”

"Brian Lara Would Be Happy": Ex-KKR Captain On Sunil Narine's Knock vs DC

England’s World Cup-winning skipper Eoin Morgan lauded Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) bowling all-rounder Sunil Narine for his match-winning knock against Delhi Capitals (DC) in their Indian Premier League (IPL) match, saying that some of the shots he played would make his childhood hero and West Indies legend Brian Lara really happy. Narine was the tormentor-in-chief as his pyrotechnic-filled 85 in 39 balls helped Kolkata post 272/7, the second-highest total in IPL history, which they defended despite half-centuries from DC skipper Rishabh Pant and Tristan Stubbs.

DC was bundled out for 166 runs and lost the game held at Visakhapatnam by 106 runs.

Morgan, the JioCinema IPL expert pointed out that Lara was Narine’s batting idol and how the T20 specialist was a batter in his younger days who could bowl a little seam bowling. But he eventually turned into a spinner who could bat a bit.

“It shows how much he enjoys his batting. As a youngster, he was a batter and used to bowl a little seam. Over time, he developed these magical deliveries and worked hard on them. But he gets so much joy out of his batting. Growing up, his hero was Brian Lara. Lara would be happy with some of the shots played by Narine this evening,” said Morgan about Narine.

Narine has decent numbers in the IPL. In 165 IPL matches, he has scored 1,180 runs at an average of 14.94, at a strike rate of 163.89, with five half-centuries. His best score of 85.

In three matches this season, Narine has scored 134 runs at an average of 44.66 and a strike rate of 206.15, with scores of 2, 47 and 85. He has also taken three wickets so far. He is the ninth-highest run-scorer so far in the season.

When it comes to batting, Narine’s most productive season was back in 2018, scoring 357 runs in 16 matches at an average of 22.31, with a strike rate of over 189. He also slammed two fifties, with the best score of 75. He led KKR to playoffs with his performances, also picking 17 wickets at an average of 27.47.

Coming to Wednesday’s match, explosive knocks from Sunil Narine (85 in 39 balls, with seven fours and seven sixes), the 18-year-old Angkrish Raghuvanshi (54 in 27 balls, with five fours and three sixes) and cameos from Andre Russell (41 in 19 balls, with four boundaries and three sixes) and Rinku Singh (26 in eight balls, with one four and three sixes) took the two-time champions to 272/7 in 20 overs.

Anrich Nortje (3/59) was the pick of the bowlers for DC, but leaked a lot of runs. Ishant Sharma (2/43) was also solid with the ball. Khaleel Ahmed and Mitchell Marsh took a wicket each.

In the run-chase, DC sunk to 33/4. A 93-run partnership between skipper Rishabh (55 in 25 balls, with four boundaries and five sixes) and Tristan Stubbs (54 in 32 balls, with four boundaries and four sixes) helped DC put up a brief fight and provide some entertainment to their fans, but they were skittled out for 166 in 17.2 overs.

Vaibhav Arora (3/27) and Varun Chakravarthy (3/33) were the pick of the bowlers for KKR. Mitchell Starc also picked up 2/25 in three overs. Andre Russell and Sunil Narine took a wicket each.

Narine won the ‘Player of the Match’ award for his fifty. KKR is at the top, having won all their three games and getting six points. DC is in the ninth spot with one win and three losses, giving them two points.

Zimbabwe Declares El Nino Drought A National Disaster

Zimbabwe Declares El Nino Drought A National Disaster

El Nino reached a peak in December but should still result in above-normal temperatures until May.

Harare, Zimbabwe:

Zimbabwe declared drought a national disaster on Wednesday, with President Emmerson Mnangagwa saying the country needed $2 billion in aid to help millions of people who are going hungry.

A severe dry spell induced by the El Nino weather pattern is wreaking havoc across southern Africa.

“No Zimbabwean must succumb or die from hunger,” Mnangagwa told a press conference.

“To that end, I do hereby declare a nationwide State of Disaster, due to the El Nino-induced drought.”

Due to poor rains, more than 2.7 million people will not have enough food to put on the table this year, he said.

This season’s grain harvest was expected to bring in just over half of the cereals needed to feed the nation, he said.

The naturally occurring El Nino climate pattern, which emerged in mid-2023, usually increases global temperatures for one year afterwards.

It is currently fuelling fires and record heat across the world.

In southern Africa, Zimbabwe is the third country to declare drought a national disaster after Malawi and Zambia.

The measure allows for more resources to address the crisis.

The drought has also affected electricity production, as Zimbabwe is highly reliant on hydroelectric power.

According to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the latest El Nino is one of the five strongest ever recorded, adding its impact will continue by fuelling heat trapped in the atmosphere by greenhouse gases.

El Nino reached a peak in December but should still result in above-normal temperatures until May over almost all land areas, the WMO said.

Major food growing areas in Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe received only 80 percent of average rainfall during the mid-November-to-February  southern hemisphere summer, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said, warning of an increased risk of food insecurity.

Telangana govt urged to continue welfare measures for weavers

Telangana govt urged to continue welfare measures for weavers

Hyderabad: BRS working president KT Rama Rao urged the current Congress government to continue all ongoing welfare and development activities initiated by the previous BRS government for the weavers. If the new government is unwilling to continue the previous government’s welfare activities, he suggested that it should at least come up with new policies and initiatives that will benefit the weavers more.

In an open letter addressed to Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, Rama Rao over the last four months, all the weavers’ welfare activities have been halted, leading to distress in the weavers community. He drew parallels with the agricultural sector, where mismanagement led to farmers’ suicides, fearing that a similar negligence from the State administration forcing weavers to commit suicides.

Reflecting on the previous government’s efforts to alleviate weavers’ struggles, the BRS working president recalled initiatives such as yarn subsidies, insurance benefits, and government cloth orders placed directly with the weavers, aimed at empowering weavers and reviving the weaving industry. Under the leadership of former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao, he pointed out that significant budget allocations were made to implement various welfare programs like loan waivers, Chenetha Mitra, life and health insurances, and creation of separate corporations for handlooms and power looms among others.

Further, Rama Rao expressed dismay over the present government’s suspension of weaving welfare activities, particularly the Bathukamma saree production programme, adversely affecting around 30,000 power loom weavers. The non-payment of pending bills, due to the election model code of conduct, has exacerbated financial woes and forced a few power loom labourers to commit suicides, reminiscent of dark times when Sircilla was known for weavers’ suicides, under the previous Congress regime.

Urging the government to prioritise weavers’ welfare beyond political considerations, the former Minister demanded the release of orders for Bathukamma sarees, to help the majority of weavers community in the State. He also criticised attempts to outsource orders to other States for commissions. He warned of continued opposition from the BRS party if the government fails to address the plight of the weaving community, stressing the need for proactive policies to uplift weavers.
