Head, Cummins Power SRH To Big Win Over RCB After Posting Record IPL Total

Travis Head’s destructive hundred fused splendidly with skipper Pat Cummins’ resolve as Sunrisers Hyderabad registered a well-crafted 25-run victory over Royal Challengers Bengaluru in a high-scoring affair on Monday. Head’s maiden T20 hundred (102, 41b, 9×4, 8×6) and Heinrich Klaasen’s pillaging 67 (31b, 2×4, 7×6) drove Sunrisers to a record-breaking 287 for three, also going past their own 277/3 against Mumbai Indians at Hyderabad this March 27. The visiting bowlers led by Cummins (3/43) showed superb skill level on a barren pitch, something their counterparts lacked, to restrict RCB to 262 for seven. This IPL match also witnessed the highest cumulative runs scored –549 in any single T20 match.

Skipper Faf du Plessis (62, 28b, 7×4, 4×6) and the super-improvising Dinesh Karthik (83, 35b, 5×4, 7×6) played fine hands but on the night they ended as mere footnotes.

However, RCB began their chase of 288 with gusto with Du Plessis and Virat Kohli (42, 20b, 6×4, 2×6) making 50 in just 3.5 overs, bettering SRH’s timing for their 50 in 4.3 overs.

The Faf-Kohli pair reached 79 in the Power Play overs and 80 in 6.2 overs but the introduction of leg-spinner Mayank Markande changed the complexion of the game.

Kohli’s attempt to slog sweep Markande saw the ball sneaking under his bat to rattle the stumps. From that point, the Royal Challengers lost four wickets in the span of 41 runs to slip to 121 for four that also saw a steep climb in the asking rate.

The fourth wicket to fall during that phase was that of Du Plessis. The South African batter smashed Cummins for a four and six in successive balls but feathered a well-directed slower bouncer to Klaasen behind the stumps.

In the same over, the Aussie pacer also trapped Saurav Chauhan in front of the wicket for a naught.

Karthik and Mahipal Lomror (19), who together punished Markande for 25 runs in his last over, milked 59 runs off 29 balls for the sixth wicket, and the former also made 63 for the seventh wicket with Anuj Rawat as RCB moved along briskly.

But in the end, it was sufficient only to provide some artificial excitement to the full house.

Earlier, Head’s destructive hundred was the driving force behind Hyderabad’s imposing total.

The South Australian added 108 runs off 49 balls with his opening partner Abhishek Sharma (34, 22b) and 57 off 26 balls with Klaasen for the second wicket as the hosts’ bowlers wilted under sustained firing.

Head’s batting does not carry the traditional elegance of a left-hander but he more than compensates it with effectiveness.

His innings at the Chinnaswamy Stadium was a telltale example of the simple principles he follows in batting — anything in his hitting arc will disappear far and wide.

The 30-year-old displayed that chilling efficiency against RCB pacers Reece Topley and debutant Lockie Ferguson, who walked in for out-of-form of Glenn Maxwell.

But Ferguson’s first over was an eminently forgettable one, conceding 18 runs. The Kiwi pacer slanted one to Head’s pads and it was flicked over square leg for a six.

Ferguson tried for course correction in the next ball, going a wee bit short.

But Head was up for the challenge, hoisting the ball over mid-on for a massive maximum.

In between, Abhishek, who also played a couple of fine shots, fell to Topley, an uppish flick snaffled by Ferguson at square leg.

But that brought together Head and Klaasen together as RCB were put under the cosh further by SRH’s second-wicket pair.

Head soon fetched his hundred with a brutally-driven boundary off pacer Vysakh Vijayakumar.

However, he perished soon as a mistimed slice off Ferguson was taken by Du Plessis at mid-off.

But the dismissal did not slow down Hyderabad as Klaasen assumed the role of battering ram, bringing up his fifty in just 23 balls.

As is his wont, the South African was severe on spinners and clobbered the part-time left-arm spin of Mahipal Lomror for 18 runs in his only over.

SRH soon went past their own record score of 277 despite Klaasen getting dismissed by Ferguson.

The landmark moment came when Aiden Markram (32, 17b) took a single off Vysakh to long-off.

Markram also added 56 runs for the unbroken fourth wicket alliance with Abdul Samad (37, 10b, 4×4, 3×6) as Hyderabad also smoked 22 sixes, the highest in an IPL innings.

Musk Reacts To "Population Collapse" In Greece As Unexpected Deaths Soar

Greece Facing 'Population Collapse' As Unexpected Deaths Soar. Elon Musk Reacts

Greece’s population is expected to fall drastically by 2050.

The population decline in Greece has reached alarming levels, and it could become the world’s first country to suffer “population collapse”, a new report has said. This started a debate on social media, with billionaire Elon Musk joining in and expressing concern. The report paints a scary picture claiming that heart failure, stroke, blood clots and cancer among otherwise healthy young people have caused the mortality rates to skyrocket in Greece. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis called the prospect of population collapse a “ticking time bomb” and a “national threat”.

Reacting to the report, Mr Musk said in a post on X, “Greece is one of dozens of countries experiencing population collapse due to low birth rates.”

Population collapse, also known as depopulation, refers to the phenomenon of a sudden and irreversible decline in the number of living people in a society.

“This is one of the most serious problems we face not only in Greece but in the EU as a whole,” Finance Minister Kostis Hatzidakis told news agency Reuters last week, referring to the rapidly declining population in his country. “It is our priority … whatever it takes.”

Greece’s birth rate fell by 30 per cent from 2011 to 2021 to under 84,000 per year, slipping below the death rate, according to the country’s national Hellenic Statistical Service, also known as ELSTAT.

Al-Jazeera said in a report that this represented a loss of nearly 2 billion euros a year in state revenue over the long term considering each Greek paid on average 5,758 euros ($6,125) in taxes and social security contributions.

The data further showed the Greece’s population will fall by over a million by 2050. Prime Minister Mitsotakis said that the country effectively recorded just one birth per two deaths in 2022.

In 1932, Greece had over 185,000 births and fewer than 118,000 deaths, ELSTAT said.

The OECD also projects Greece’s population to fall from 10.4 million last year to just over 10 million in 2030.

"Irrelevant Piece Of Paper": S Jaishankar Mocks Congress Manifesto

'Irrelevant Piece Of Paper': S Jaishankar Mocks Congress Manifesto

S Jaishankar said that this election is extraordinarily important.

Bengaluru:

External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar on Monday said that there was no need to bother about the election manifesto of the Congress as it will become just a piece of paper with no relevance after the BJP registers victory in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

The Union Minister said this while answering a question about Congress’ claims that “if BJP gets 400 seats, it will change the Constitution”.

EAM Jaishankar said that it was a matter of happiness that the Congress agreed that the BJP would cross 400 seats this time.

“We will put that 400 to use by taking the country forward. When you see Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government at above 400 seats, you will see that we are doing more service towards the people of India,” S. Jaishankar said.

“From Jawaharlal Nehru to Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister is the leader of the country. How can you (referring to Rahul Gandhi) say that you won’t accept a leader? Rahul Gandhi disrespected former PM Manmohan Singh during the UPA regime. You think you are bigger than the PM as the party is a family enterprise?” the Union Minister questioned.

Talking about BJP’s hopes in south India in the upcoming elections, EAM Jaishankar stated that his party is “genuinely optimistic”.

“The kind of response PM Modi is getting from the public in Tamil Nadu and Kerala is phenomenal. We have been in a good position in Karnataka, and also got a good hold in Telangana.

“Most importantly, from the southern states, we are seeking votes not only on the manifesto but on our 10-year’s track record and achievements. We have delivered food, electricity, water, infrastructure, and education. When you look at our track record, you will strengthen our hands as we have bigger things to do for the nation. People of these states are very much part of all that has happened in 10 years. Every programme that has happened has impacted Tamil Nadu and Kerala. It will have an impact,” EAM Jaishankar said.

He further said: “This election is extraordinarily important. We have 10 years of foundation. We are planning to do something really big in the third term.”

Delhi Gurdwara Security Guard Steals From Donation Box, Buys Bike, Arrested

Delhi Gurdwara Security Guard Steals From Donation Box, Buys Bike, Arrested

He said that he worked as a security guard from April to December 2023

New Delhi:

A 23-year-old man was arrested for allegedly stealing money from a donation box in a gurdwara located in south Delhi’s Pushp Vihar, police on Monday said.

A complaint regarding the theft was received on April 2, after which an FIR was registered and an investigation was taken up, they said.

“We checked CCTV footage and interrogated gurdwara staff members. During questioning, a former security guard, Rohit Kumar, confessed to stealing money from the donation box,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (south) Ankit Chauhan said.

Kumar confessed that he had procured a duplicate key of the donation box and during his work as a security guard from April to December 2023, he stole money on multiple occasions, he said.

“In the recent incident, he stole Rs 55,000, and paid Rs 35,000 as a down payment to purchase a motorcycle,” the DCP said.

Byju's Gets Majority Of Shareholders' Approval For $200 Million Rights Issue

New Delhi:

The majority of shareholders of edtech firm Think and Learn, owner of Byju’s brand, have approved the company’s resolution to increase its authorised share capital to absorb USD 200 million raised through the rights issue, a statement said on Monday.

The EGM held on March 29 was opposed by a group of investors in the company.

“The Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) held on March 29, 2024, has been approved by a majority of 55 per cent of the total votes polled. The voting process, which included both the EGM and a postal ballot that concluded on April 6, 2024, has been duly scrutinised by an independent third party,” the company said in a statement.

The approval of the EGM proposals paves the way for Think and Learn Private Limited, the parent company of Byju’s, to issue fresh shares and conclude the rights issue aimed at tackling the liquidity crunch, including unpaid salaries, regulatory dues and vendor payments, the statement said.

While the rights issue provides Byju’s with the necessary financial resources, the company is currently unable to utilise the proceeds.

“A National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) interim order, on a petition filed by four foreign shareholders, instructed the company to hold the funds received from the rights issue in an escrow account for now. The next hearing on the matter is scheduled for April 23,” the statement said.

The group of four investors — Prosus, General Atlantic, Sofina, and Peak XV — along with support from other shareholders, including Tiger and Owl Ventures, had approached the NCLT against the EGM.

Woman Pours Boiling Water On Husband, Pushes Him Off Terrace, Arrested

Woman Pours Boiling Water On Husband, Pushes Him Off Terrace, Arrested

The wife, Amrita Rai, suspected the husband, Ashish Kumar Rai, of having an extra-marital affair.

A woman has been arrested for throwing boiling water on his sleeping husband and teaming up with her family members to thrash him and then pushing him off the terrace, said Uttar Pradesh police.

The incident, which took place in the dead of the night on April 13, was reported from Deoria, some 50 km from Gorakhpur.

“The man was visiting his in-laws when his wife threw hot water on him and then the family beat him up,” said a police officer.

The wife, Amrita Rai, suspected the husband, Ashish Kumar Rai, of having an extra-marital affair.

“I was visiting my in-laws. They confiscated my mobile and the keys of my motorbike. When I asked for the keys, they said you should stay today. I said okay to that. Then we all slept,” said Ashish Rai, a native of Balia.

“At 3 in the night, my wife said she is going to visit the washroom. Her sister had kept the boiling water ready. She threw the water on me while I was asleep. When I tried running, they got hold of me and started thrashing me. They broke my head too. They threw me off the terrace,” Mr Rai added.

An FIR has been filed against the woman and investigation is underway.

Iran: White House warned about consequences of repeated Israeli adventurism

Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian says Iran has warned the United States about potential consequences of repeated Israeli military adventurism against the Islamic Republic.

The top diplomat made the remarks in a Monday phone call with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi.

“We have clearly warned the White House that, in case of [fresh] adventurism by the Zionist regime in repeating terrorist aggression against Iran’s interests and security, Tehran’s subsequent response and action would be decisive, immediate, and extensive,” Amir-Abdollahian said.

On April 1, the Israeli regime committed a terrorist attack against Iran’s diplomatic premises in the Syrian capital Damascus.

The Israeli attack resulted in the martyrdom of Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a commander of the Quds Force of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), his deputy, General Mohammad Hadi Haji Rahimi, and five of their accompanying officers.

Retaliating against the attack, the IRGC targeted the occupied territories late on Saturday with a barrage of drones and missiles. The retaliatory attack, dubbed Operation True Promise, has inflicted damage on Israeli military bases across the occupied territories.

Following the reprisal, Iran both relayed the message that it viewed the matter as “concluded,” and also warned the US, the Israeli regime’s biggest ally, against trying to involve itself in the conflict.

For his part, the Chinese official said Beijing vehemently condemned the attack on the Iranian Embassy in Damascus, considering it to be in violation of international rules and principles.

Wang noted how his country had likewise supported the Islamic Republic’s just demands at the United Nations Security Council, despite double-standard practices on the part of the US and its Western allies, which saw them refusing to condemn the Israeli atrocity.

He said he had notified his American counterpart, Antony Blinken, about the Iranian party’s principled position concerning the recent developments.

“China and the Islamic Republic are strategic partners,” Wang added, saying, “Beijing always attaches great importance to Iran’s positions and standpoint.”

Editorial: Elusive promise

Modi must offer concrete timeline for restoring statehood of J&K and holding Assembly elections

Published Date – 15 April 2024, 11:54 PM

Editorial: Elusive promise

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s latest outreach to the people of Jammu & Kashmir, ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, strikes the right chord but the NDA government must walk the talk on the promises made to the troubled region. While addressing an election rally in Udhampur, Modi promised to restore the statehood of Jammu & Kashmir and also hold Assembly elections. This was the first time that the Prime Minister directly referred to the restoration of statehood since the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019. However, he did not offer any concrete timeline for implementing the twin promises. Instead, he extolled the positive impact of scrapping Article 370, ending special status to J&K, and targeted the opposition I.N.D.I.A bloc’s leaders for their “Mughal mindset”. His statement comes at a time when Jammu voters have started growing resentful of the downgrading of J&K into a union Territory and the failure to hold Assembly polls. The Prime Minister has claimed that the region has undergone a major transformation in the last ten years and the upcoming Lok Sabha polls will take place without the fear of terrorism, strikes, stone-pelting and cross-border firing. It is ironic that the Centre, on the one hand, claims that terrorism, separatism and stone-throwing are no more election issues in J&K but on the other, there has been an inordinate delay in holding Assembly polls. Nearly five years after the bold decision to end the special status, the promised developmental push remains elusive.

The Supreme Court had, in December last year, directed the Election Commission to hold J&K Assembly polls by September 30, 2024. The union Territory has been without any elected government since June, 2018, when the BJP withdrew support to the Mehbooba Mufti-led government. True empowerment of people comes by strengthening the democratic processes and giving them a sense of participation. The gains from ending the special status cannot fully materialise unless Kashmiris are made stakeholders in their own development. The Centre has been pushing a narrative that J&K has been enjoying full freedom and peace and touching new heights of development post-abrogation. It is also argued that the number of terror-related incidents has come down significantly in recent years. The annual death toll — both of civilians and security personnel — has also been waning. No major terror strike has taken place in Kashmir after the Pulwama attack of February 2019. The government has been prioritising development and employment in a bid to wean the youth away from the path of extremism. While it cannot be denied that the region is on the road to progress with a vast majority of people yearning for development and peace, the government is yet to fulfil its key promises of holding free and fair elections and restoration of statehood. The inordinate delay in this is sending out the message that all is not well on the ground.

Rohit Creates History With Gigantic T20 Record, Becomes 1st Indian To…

India and Mumbai Indians (MI) star batter Rohit Sharma became the first Indian to smash 500 sixes in T20 cricket. The ‘Hitman’ achieved this milestone during his side’s Indian Premier League (IPL) match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at Wankhede Stadium. Rohit was at his vintage best in the match, scoring 105* in 63 balls. His knock was studded with 11 boundaries and five sixes. Amid the fall of wickets around him, the former Mumbai Indians skipper held the fort at one end, blazing away at a strike rate of 166.67. (IPL 2024 Points Table)

With these sixes, Rohit’s six tally has gone up to 502 sixes.

The highest number of sixes in T20 cricket is by West Indies legend Chris Gayle (1,056 sixes), followed by WI all-rounder Kieron Pollard (860 sixes), Andre Russell (678 sixes) and Colin Munro (548 sixes).

In six matches this IPL season, Rohit has scored 261 runs at an average of 52.20 and a strike rate of over 167, with a century.

Coming to the match, MI won the toss and put CSK to bat first.

After Ajinkya Rahane (5) and Rachin Ravindra (21 in 16 balls, with two fours and a six) did not make much impact, Gaikwad (69 in 40 balls, with five fours and five sixes) and Shivam Dube (66* in 38 balls, with 10 fours and two sixes) stitched a 90-run partnership. Later, MS Dhoni (20* in four balls) came during the final over and a hat-trick of sixes took CSK to 206/4 in 20 overs.

Hardik Pandya (2/43) was the pick of the bowlers for MI. Shreyas Gopal and Gerald Coetzee got a wicket each.

In the run-chase, MI was off to a fine start, with Ishan Kishan (23 in 15 balls, with three fours and a six) and Rohit having a 70-run partnership. Rohit managed to score his second IPL ton, but did not get much support from the other end, except for another fifty-run stand with Tilak Varma (31 in 20 balls, with five fours). The Blue and Gold franchise ended with 186/6 on the board, losing by 20 runs.

Matheesha Pathirana (4/28) was the pick of the bowlers for CSK. Mustafizur Rahman and Tushar Deshpande also got a wicket.

Netanyahu Under Pressure Over Iran Attack As Allies Urge Caution

Netanyahu Under Pressure Over Iran Attack As Allies Urge Caution

Jerusalem:

All eyes are on Israel after Iran’s unprecedented attack, but its war cabinet has not signalled any preference for the course to follow, while allies who helped thwart the strike call for caution.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, less vocal than usual, has yet to define any shape, form, or timing for a response to the first direct Iranian attack on Israeli soil.

It came in the form of over 300 drones and missiles launched from Iran on Saturday in response to an April 1 strike on the Islamic republic’s consulate in Damascus, largely attributed to Israel.

Faced with allies urging caution on one side, and some politicians at home calling for a hard response on the other, Netanyahu has met with his war cabinet twice, and called US President Joe Biden.

But he has not spoken publicly of the matter since Sunday, when he praised the Israeli defence in a short post on X.

Israeli army chief Herzi Halevi on Monday told soldiers Iran’s attack would be “met with a response”, but did not specify the timing or type.

“There has been a lot of pressure over the last 48 hours on the Israeli government to respond due to the fact that it was a very unprecedented attack,” Iran researcher at Tel Aviv University Raz Zimmt told AFP.

“I’m not sure the Israeli government can avoid a certain immediate reaction, even if it doesn’t want to be engaged in a full-scale confrontation,” he added.

Zimmt said he would prefer to see “some covert activity without Israel taking responsibility for that in Iran”.

National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir expressed the need for a hard response on the night of the Iranian launches.

“Impressive defence until now — now there must be a crushing attack,” the far-right minister said on X.

– No ‘need to rush’ –

Conversely, former prime minister Ehud Barak condemned hawkish behaviour and denounced “those who want to set the entire Middle East on fire”.

Others, such as Knesset member Gideon Saar, appealed for patience.

“Israel does not need to rush in its response and disrupt the priorities it set for itself,” Saar said on X.

“Now, the focus needs to return to victory in Gaza: Toppling Hamas and freeing the hostages.”

Israel, which feared being isolated due to the war in Gaza, praised and publicised its cooperation with the US, UK, and France, with support from regional actors such as Jordan in intercepting Iran’s attack.

Without their support, its aerial defence system that includes the Iron Dome would have likely been overwhelmed by the Iranian launches.

But Western governments, notably those that supported Israel in its defence, have warned against an escalation.

A US official said Sunday that Washington would “not participate” in any potential counterattack by Israel.

British Foreign Secretary David Cameron and French President Emmanuel Macron also cautioned against retaliation.

Even Iran said it considered the matter “concluded” unless Israel chose to commit “another mistake”, in which case Iran’s response would be “considerably more severe”.

– ‘Covert’ response –

“It would be useful to maintain this defence alliance… that is almost unprecedented, so that will favour holding back,” summarised Calev Ben-Dor, former analyst for the Israeli foreign ministry.

“At the same time, in the Middle East, one cannot be attacked by more than 300 missiles and drones and not do anything,” Ben-Dor, now deputy editor-in-chief for specialised review Fathom, said.

“I assume nothing will happen in the next… two weeks or so. But I think Israel will, at some stage, strike back, probably more in a covert way than a public way, at a time and place of its choosing,” he said.

The coalition’s help limits Israel’s manoeuvering space, as it is in a way indebted to the US, says Jean-Loup Samaan, analyst for the French Institute for International Relations (IFRI).

“What seems unlikely to me is a frontal response on the Iranians, it’s not a decision Netanyahu can make without consulting the Biden administration,” he told AFP.

“Israeli systems are largely financed by the Americans, so I don’t think they will play around and be ungrateful,” he added.

A diplomat for a country that took part in the coalition told AFP they were “satisfied” that the “hawks’ line” did not prevail over the course of the weekend.

On Netanyahu’s lack of public response, Jeremy Issacharoff, a former Israeli diplomat, told AFP that “the less said, the better”.

“I think the Iranians should be concerned and should be kept as much in the dark as possible, and no one needs to give them any assurances,” he added.
