Jailed Jharkhand Ex-Chief Minister Hemant Soren Not To Contest From Dumka

Jailed Jharkhand Ex-Chief Minister Hemant Soren Not To Contest From Dumka

The BJP has already nominated Sita Soren, Hemant Soren’s sister-in-law, from Dumka (File)

Ranchi:

The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) on Thursday nominated its Shikaripada legislator Nalin Soren from the Dumka Lok Sabha seat, making it clear that jailed former chief minister Hemant Soren will not contest from the constituency as speculated earlier.

The party also fielded its Tundi MLA Mathura Prasad Mahto from Giridih Lok Sabha seat.

“The party has decided to field Nalin Soren from Dumka seat and Mathura Prasad Mahto from Giridih,” a JMM leader said.

The BJP has already nominated Sita Soren, former JMM MLA and sister-in-law of Hemant Soren, from the Dumka constituency, reserved for Scheduled Tribes.

Notably, the saffron party had on March 2 renominated sitting MP Sunil Soren from Dumka but later withdrew his candidature in order to field Sita Soren from the seat.

Sunil Soren had defeated JMM president Shibu Soren in the 2019 polls by a margin of 47,590 votes.

Sita Soren, a three-term MLA and elder daughter-in-law of JMM patriarch Shibu Soren, joined the BJP last month.

She alleged that she was “neglected by the JMM” and was in “isolation” after the death of her husband Durga Soren in 2009.

The Congress on March 27 announced the names of candidates for three Lok Sabha constituencies — Lohardaga, Khunti and Hazaribag.

Kalicharan Munda, Sukhdeo Bhagat and Jai Prakashbhai Patel will contest the polls in Khunti (ST), Lohardaga (ST) and Hazaribagh seats respectively.

As per the INDIA bloc leaders, an initial seat-sharing agreement has been finalised for all the 14 Lok Sabha constituencies in the state.

According to the initial understanding, the Congress would contest from seven seats and the JMM from five. The RJD and CPI (ML) Liberation would field candidates in one seat each, they said.

The CPI (ML) Liberation on March 30 named three-time MLA from the Bagodar seat, Vinod Kumar Singh, for the Koderma Lok Sabha constituency in Jharkhand.

The BJP has announced candidates for 13 seats and left Giridih for the AJSU Party.

"They Want Position…": Robert Vadra's Swipe At Leaders Who Left Congress

'They Want Position...': Robert Vadra's Swipe At Leaders Who Left Congress

Robert Vadra indicated that he will join active politics “at the right time”.

New Delhi:

With several prominent faces leaving Congress, businessman Robert Vadra, who is the son-in-law of Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, has said that these leaders were after “power and position” and exuded confidence of the party putting up a good fight in the Lok Sabha polls.

“It is not right to say that there is no trust in Congress. I have met these people, they have experience. Right now they feel like they need power or a ticket or seat but they don’t put efforts into that. It needs effort. If you feel that your identity is based on being a minister and if that’s not there…they shouldn’t be worried. If they don’t get the ticket, it doesn’t mean that if any other party invites them, they run away,” Mr Vadra told ANI in an interview.

“There is a legacy, the Congress has offered them a lot, have done lot of things for them, their family. When they are with Congress for generations, they should have some patience even if they feel difficulties or if it takes long to come back to power…power is not everything. We don’t get angry with them, we bid them adieu for a good future. But people will see them and feel that they do not belong to any particular party and go where there is power or position. Only position matters to them,” he added.

Mr Vadra was responding to a query about some prominent faces such as Vijender Singh, Ravneet Singh Bittu and Gaurav Vallabh leaving the party to join BJP.

He said some leaders leave on not getting a ticket to contest polls.
“They don’t think what Congress has done for them. They feel there should be position and identity so they leave when they do not get the ticket or if any other party makes an offer. We have been witness to this coming and going for years. When the times change, you will see many people will return. But the Congress party, INDIA bloc and the Gandhi family will raise their voice, fight for the people… I believe that we will be able to put up a good fight. We will work hard for the people and those who desire for change will support us. We will talk about women’s safety, unemployment and development,” he said.

Spelling out his interest to contest the Lok Sabha polls, Mr Vadra, has said that he gets to meet MPs from other political parties who make him offer to join their parties and also assure that they will ensure his victory in the election.

Mr Vadra also said that the people of Amethi expect him to represent their constituency if he thinks of becoming a member of Parliament.

Mr Vadra said he wants Priyanka Gandhi, who is Congress general secretary, should become MP first and he can follow her.”I always want that Priyanka (Gandhi) should become an MP first and she reaches parliament, and then I feel, I can also come. I feel that I should become (MP) with my hard work, with blessings of Sonia Gandhi and Congress party,” he said.

“I will also say that because for so much time, I have been meeting people and there are MPs from other parties, when I meet them, they speak with me with love also and say come (to parliament) from our party and why are you taking so long and we will ensure that you win with a huge margin,” he added.

While stating his ambitions to be an MP, Mr Vadra also talked of the leaders he meets understating “the troubles” he faces “every day”.

Robert Vadra indicated that he will join active politics “at the right time”.

“It is not that from different places in country, there are invites, it is also coming from different parties that you come from our side and we will support you because I have friendship with several people beyond party lines, they see my hard work, understand it, and the trouble I face everyday, they understand it. They feel that if you are in Parliament then the replies you give, you will be able to give on a big platform, and the work you am doing can be done on a large scale if you are in parliament. There are several invites, there is pressure and my thinking is to work harder and stay among people and I will take part definitely at the right time,” he said.

Mr Vadra targeted Union Minister Smriti Irani, who represents Amethi, saying she does not visit the constituency frequently and people feel they made a mistake by electing her.

Smriti Irani defeated Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls from Amethi, a Nehru-Gandhi family stronghold, in one of the biggest upsets of the polls. Mr Vadra, who has indicated his electoral ambitions earlier too, said the Gandhi family has worked hard in Amethi and surrounding areas.

“They want a member of the Gandhi family returns, they will make him the person’s victory with a huge margin, they also expect that if I take my first step in politics, and think of becoming an MP, then I should represent Amethi,” he said. Vadra said that the decision on Amethi and Rae Bareli will be taken by the Congress leadership.”I’m not saying that I will contest from Amethi or Priyanka will contest from Rae Bareli. The decision will taken by the Congress party,” he said.

Mr Vadra said he joined hands with Priyanka Gandhi for Congress campaign in Amethi in the 1999 Lok Sabha polls.

“That time politics was very different, fear was sought to be created among people. We use to visit sensitive areas at night, put up posters, distributed bags, worked hard with our workers day and night and gave them trust that we are there and they should keep working in their areas and booths. They know how we hard we worked and there was brotherhood and love, which is still there,” he said.

“The people with whom I worked…outside my office, residence…they send message through social media, they cut cake on my birthday, arrange langar or other service for people because they know I like this. People in the country see that I stay among people, work hard as much as possible for the disabled and blind children and spend all n charity. I visit on religious tour and they celebrate my birthday and celebrate festivals in my name and distribute among people there,” he added.

Mr Vadra was asked if he could be a candidate from Amethi. Congress has not yet named its candidates for Amethi and Rae Bareli seats in Uttar Pradesh, where it is contesting the Lok Sabha polls in alliance with Samajwadi Party.

Rahul Gandhi won the last Lok Sabha polls from Wayanad in Kerala and is recontesting from the seat.

The Congress election committee in Uttar Pradesh had last month “unanimously recommended” that members of the Gandhi family should contest from Amethi and Raebareli Lok Sabha constituencies.
Former Congress president Sonia Gandhi has been representing Rae Bareli since 2004. She has now been elected to Rajya Sabha.

Lok Sabha polls will be held in seven phases from April 19 to June 1.

Office Being Maligned In Court By Delhi Government, Alleges Lt Governor

Office Being Maligned In Court By Delhi Government, Alleges Lt Governor

Lt Governor office alleged Concerted attempts by Delhi government to ‘mislead’ courts.

New Delhi:

The Delhi LG Secretariat has written to the Union home secretary over “violations” by the Delhi government and “concerted attempts” to “mislead” courts with the aim to “influence” the justice delivery system, Raj Niwas officials said on Thursday.

The Delhi government attempts to “influence” the justice delivery system through filing of “motivated and premeditated” petitions and presenting “patently false” affidavits, they said.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, however, said courts are the last resort after officers do not follow ministers’ directions. No action was taken by the lieutenant governor against such officers, it said in a statement.

“Even after repeated instructions issued by ministers concerned, the Centre’s officers do not act and the lieutenant governor doesn’t respond to requests by the ministers,” the government said.

The letter from Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena’s principal secretary cited various cases in the Supreme Court and Delhi High Court and the alleged “violations” of the Delhi government with regard to its “dealings” with these courts.

“Of late, there have been concerted attempts at misleading the courts, with an apparent aim of influencing the justice delivery system by way of filing motivated and premeditated petitions and trying to secure an endorsement of the same from the courts by presenting patently false affidavits,” the letter alleged.

It said “GNCTD (Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi) Vs the Lt Governor” in various matters in different courts has become the “prevalent norm” rather than an exception.

“The attempts obviously are, apart from misleading the courts, to create a false media narrative which maligns the constitutional office of Lt Governor in public domain,” said the letter sent to the Union home secretary with Mr Saxena’s approval.

The cases quoted in the letter include matters related to infrastructure in the Delhi High Court and subordinate courts, release of funds for Delhi Jal Board and ‘Farishtey’ scheme, DCPCR, classification of conforming and non-conforming wards related to the 2021-22 excise policy.

The letter is intended to apprise the home ministry of the developments in Delhi with regard to “avoidable litigation” in various courts, it said.

The AAP government said it is quite “unfortunate” that attempts are being made to encroach the jurisdiction of the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi.

The Supreme Court has clearly stated that Delhi has a democratically elected government which is accountable to the people. Delhi cannot be subsumed as a unit of the Union, it said.

In the spirit of cooperative federalism, the Union of India must exercise its powers within the boundaries created by the Constitution, it added.

"If Amethi Wants Me…": Robert Vadra Hints At Contesting Lok Sabha Polls

'If Amethi Wants Me...': Robert Vadra Hints At Contesting Lok Sabha Polls

Robert Vadra is Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi’s husband and a businessman (File).

New Delhi:

Robert Vadra, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra‘s husband, has hinted at his political debut – a blockbuster entrance from the party’s stronghold of Amethi in Uttar Pradesh. On Thursday evening he declared “the people of Amethi expect me to represent them… if I decide to become a MP”.

Mr Vadra also snuck in a jibe at Amethi’s current MP – Union Minister Smriti Irani – telling news agency ANI “the person who was elected last time is only concerned with attacking the Gandhi family, and not with ensuring the development of the area and well-being of its people”.

“For years… the Gandhi family worked hard in Raebareli (the Congress’ other Uttar Pradesh stronghold, which was won by Sonia Gandhi in 2019), Sultanpur, and Amethi. But now people of Amethi are troubled by the current MP. They believe they made a mistake by electing her,” he said.

“When the people of Amethi feel they have made a mistake, when they feel they want the Gandhi family to come back or if they want me… then they will give a big win to the Congress,” he said.

Amethi votes on May 20, in the fifth phase of polling. Results will be out on June 4.

Will He, Won’t He? Robert Vadra’s Political Debut

This is not the first time Mr Vadra has flirted with the idea of joining politics.

In April 2022 he said he was ready to do so “if people want”.

“If people wish I should represent them, and if I can bring some change, then I will take this step,” he told reporters in Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain, claiming he only wants serve people “in a major way”.

“Let’s see what happens ahead. We used to discuss every day in the family about the kind of politics taking place today and how the nation is changing,” he said.

Three years before that – in the build-up to the 2019 general election – Mr Vadra said he would not enter active politics till he is cleared of charges in an ongoing corruption case. He said, “I am always going to be in India (but) I will not be active politics till I clear my name. That is my promise.”

Mr Vadra faces multiple corruption charges, including an Enforcement Directorate investigation relating to alleged money laundering in the purchase of a property in London in the United Kingdom.

At the time Mr Vadra – as he said today too – also emphasised his desire to “earn” any political recognition or electoral win that may come his way.

“I have utmost respect for the legacy. It’s not OK that because I am part of this family I can say, ‘I am also somebody important or significant’. I have to earn it. That’s what my mother taught me,” he told NDTV in an exclusive interview.

Congress’ Amethi Candidate?

The Congress will contest 17 of UP’s 80 Lok Sabha seats, with the remaining 63 going to INDIA bloc ally Samajwadi Party and regional outfits. The party has declared candidates for 14 seats so far.

On its candidates for Amethi and Raebareli, the party has remained silent.

There was furious speculation last month that Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi would pose a high-profile twin challenge to the BJP, which has dominated UP’s electoral politics over the past decade.

Mr Gandhi was supposed to contest the Amethi seat he held from 2004 till 2014, till the shock loss to Smriti Irani in the 2019 election. The senior Congress leader lost by over 50,000 votes.

Ms Irani was his rival in 2014 and 2019, and has been tasked with defending her seat in this election.

The BJP’s plans for Amethi, therefore, are clear.

Less clear are its plans for the Raebareli, which has been held by former Congress boss Sonia Gandhi since 2004. Mrs Gandhi will not, however, contest this election; she has shifted to the Rajya Sabha.

There was (and still is) talk that the Congress will field Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, from the seat, setting up what will be an interesting husband-wife combination for Amethi and Raebareli voters.

NASA picks 3 firms for moon exploration vehicle development

Vanessa Wyche, Director of NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, anticipates the progress of the Artemis generation lunar exploration vehicle to enhance our lunar discoveries.

NASA picks 3 firms for moon exploration vehicle development

San Francisco:  The vehicle will help conduct scientific research during the agency’s Artemis campaign at the Moon and preparing for human missions to Mars, NASA said in a statement.

“We look forward to the development of the Artemis generation lunar exploration vehicle to help us advance what we learn at the Moon,” said Vanessa Wyche, director of NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston.

“This vehicle will greatly increase our astronauts’ ability to explore and conduct science on the lunar surface while also serving as a science platform between crewed missions,” Wyche added.

NASA intends to begin using the LTV for crewed operations during Artemis V.

The contract with “firm-fixed-price task orders” has a combined maximum potential value of $4.6 billion for all awards.

Each provider will begin with a feasibility task order, which will be a year-long special study to develop a system that meets NASA’s requirements through the preliminary design maturity project phase.

Between Artemis missions, when crews are not on the Moon, the LTV will operate remotely to support NASA’s scientific objectives as needed.

Outside those times, the provider will have the ability to use their LTV for commercial lunar surface activities unrelated to NASA missions, said the space agency.

“We will use the LTV to travel to locations we might not otherwise be able to reach on foot, increasing our ability to explore and make new scientific discoveries,” said Jacob Bleacher, chief exploration scientist at NASA Headquarters in Washington.

Through Artemis, NASA will send astronauts – including the first woman, first person of colou, and its first international partner astronaut – to explore the Moon.

Amid Gaza war, US approves supplying Israel with 1000s more bombs

File photo of MK82 500-pound bombs

The United States has approved providing the Israeli regime with thousands more bombs as Tel Aviv presses ahead with its ongoing genocidal war against the Gaza Strip.

“The State Department approved the transfer of more than 1,000 MK82 500-pound bombs, over 1,000 small-diameter bombs, and fuses for MK80 bombs,” The Washington Post reported on Thursday, citing US officials.

Reports say the Washington has quietly made more than 100 weapons sales to Tel Aviv since October 7, when the latter began the war against Gaza in response to a retaliatory operation by the coastal sliver’s resistance movements.

More than 33,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed in the brutal military onslaught so far.

The approvals were given on Monday, the same day when the Israeli military killed seven aid workers serving the World Central Kitchen (WCK) charity, including an American citizen, in the central Gaza city of Deir al-Balah.

“The transaction demonstrates the administration’s determination to continue its flow of lethal weaponry to Israel despite Monday’s high-profile killings and growing calls for the United States to condition such support on greater protection for civilians in the war zone,” the paper wrote.

Washington has expressed supposed “outrage” at the killings, and has also called for a ceasefire in Gaza, despite sustaining its uninterrupted flow of ample arms supplies towards Tel Aviv.

Reporting late last month, The Post said the administration of US President Joe Biden had authorized the transfer of billions of dollars in bombs and warplanes to Israel in a matter of days.

Pentagon and State Department officials said the new arms packages included more than 1800 bombs, the daily said at the time.

The report described the explosives as 2000-pound devices that can demolish entire city blocks and were rarely used in populated areas. Israel, however, has used them extensively in Gaza.

'Knife': Salman Rushdie's Memoir About His Stabbing To Release On April 16

'Knife': Salman Rushdie's Memoir About His Stabbing To Release On April 16

Salman Rushdie’s memoir, ‘Knife’, about his stabbing to release on April 16.

New Delhi:

Salman Rushdie’s answer to violence is art as the author’s memoir about the knife attack he faced in 2022 is now set to hit the stands on April 16, publisher Penguin Random House India announced today.

In “Knife: Meditations After an Attempted Murder”, Rushdie recalls in “unforgettable details” the traumatic events of August 12, 2022 at the Chautauqua Institution when he was attacked by a man wearing a black mask, wielding a knife. The attack left Rushdie blind in the right eye.

The 76-year-old has recalled in the book the attack’s aftermath, his journey toward physical recovery and healing.

“This was a necessary book for me to write: a way to take charge of what happened, and to answer violence with art,” Rushdie said.

The 256-page book is “a deeply moving reminder of literature’s capacity to make sense of the unthinkable, an intimate and life-affirming meditation on life, loss, love, art-and finding the strength to stand up again”.

For some time after Iran’s Grand Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued a 1989 fatwa calling for Rushdie’s death over alleged blasphemy in his novel “The Satanic Verses”, the writer lived in isolation and with round-the-clock security. But for years since, he had moved about with few restrictions, until the stabbing at the Chautauqua Institution.

“Knife by Salman Rushdie is an important book about the world we live, and the place of literature in it. It is a must read,” Milee Ashwarya, publisher – Penguin Random House India, said in a statement.

His other works include the Booker Prize-winning “Midnight’s Children”, “Shame” and “The Moor’s Last Sigh”. Rushdie is also a prominent advocate for free expression and a former president of PEN America. He had also penned a third person memoir “Joseph Anton” about his years in hiding after the Fatwa.

“‘Knife’ is a searing book, and a reminder of the power of words to make sense of the unthinkable. We are honoured to publish it, and amazed at Salman’s determination to tell his story, and to return to the work he loves,” Nihar Malaviya, CEO – Penguin Random House, said.
