Bengaluru Congress Pick Says Students Forced To Attend Tejasvi Surya Rally

Tejasvi Surya is contesting from Bangalore South seat, which he won last time

Bengaluru:

Congress leader Soumya Reddy, who is set to take on BJP’s Tejasvi Surya in the Bengaluru South Lok Sabha contest, has sought the Election Commission’s intervention amid allegations that students were pressured to attend the BJP leader’s nomination rally today. Responding to the allegations, Mr Surya later said, “See this crowd. Does it look like I forced them to be here?”

In a post on X, Ms Reddy has shared screenshots of WhatsApp messages that the Congress claims were posted on groups of college students, asking them to join Mr Surya’s nomination rally today. One of the messages says “no excuses will be entertained” and that those attending the rally will get t-shirts. The message also assures the students that they will get attendance for this.

Ms Reddy has also tagged a social media post by the Indian Youth Congress (IYC) on the issue. The IYC post shares a screenshot of a tweet in which a student has claimed that the president of his institution’s student council is threatening them against skipping the rally.

One of the screenshot shows a member of the WhatsApp group asking why attendance is mandatory. Another user replies that Mr Surya had accepted the student council’s request to attend the college’s fest and “now it’s our turn to do the same”.

The IYC has questioned why students are being told to compulsorily attend a political programme. “Isn’t this a violation of the code of conduct?” it asked. Sharing IYC’s post, Ms Reddy has tagged the Chief Electoral Officer, Karnataka and said, “Request action to be taken.”

Dr Naveen Kumar CM, principal of Jain College, which was mentioned in the screenshots, said they have issued no official direction to the students regarding the rally. He said regular classes have been scheduled. “We are investigating this,” he said, adding that if any student is found involved in forcing others to attend the rally, strict action will be taken.

Mr Surya is sitting MP from Bangalore South, a BJP stronghold earlier held by veteran leader and Union Minister, the late Ananth Kumar, for two decades. In the 2019 election, Mr Surya defeated the Congress’s BK Hariprasad by a margin of over 3 lakh votes.

Ms Reddy is the daughter of Karnataka minister Ramalinga Reddy and a former MLA from Jayanagar, one of the eight Assembly segments under the Bangalore South parliamentary constituency.

"Oye Lucky, Lucky Oye": Shashank Auction Memes Take Over After PBKS' Win

Shashank Singh – this is one name which will b spoken about a lot in the coming days in the IPL 2024. On Thursday, when all hope was lost for Punjab Kings while chasing a 200-run total against Gujarat Titans, Shashank Singh emerged as the Shikhar Dhawan-led team’s hero. The batting allrounder scored 61* off just 29 balls to take his team to a win in 19.5 overs. He hit four sixes and six fours as PBKS registered their second win in four matches in the IPL 2024.

However, Shashank Singh’s induction into the PBKS ranks had a hint of controversy last year. Towards the end of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 auction, Shashank Singh was roped in for Rs 20 lakh by Punjab Kings. But soon after he was picked in the accelerated auction, there seemed to be some confusion going by the gestures of Punjab Kings co-owners Ness Wadia and Preity Zinta. When Shashank’s name was brought up, Preity Zinta raised the paddle after discussing the player with her team. The player was quickly sold as no other franchise bid for him, and the hammer went down.

As there seemed to be some confusion, auctioneer Mallik Sagar said: “It was a wrong name? You don’t want the player?” asked Mallika. “We are talking about Shashank Singh. But the hammer has come down. Player No. 236 and 237 both went to you. I think the hammer has come down for 237 (Shashank) as well,” she said.

Than incident led to social media storm on how Punjab Kings did not want a player which it had just bought. However, Punjab Kings on Wednesday issued a clarification: “Punjab Kings would like to clarify that Shashank Singh was always on our target list. The confusion was due to 2 players of the same name being on the list. We are delighted to have him onboard and see him contribute to our success.

After Shashank’s latest heroics, the auction confusion memes flooded the internet.

Punjab Kings match-winner Shashank Singh said that his mentality of always going in to bat thinking he is the best helped him conquer the imposing 200-run target set by Gujarat Titans in an IPL game here on Thursday.

Shashank slammed an unbeaten 29-ball 61 as PBKS won the match by three wickets on the penultimate ball of the thrilling match.

“They (senior players) are the legends of the game, but when I go to bat I think I am the best. You get experience, couldn’t get a lot of matches before. Here the owners and coaching staff backed me. I was very confident,” said the 32-year-old all-rounder, who outshone GT skipper Shubman Gill on the day with his pyrotechnics and winning mentality.

Robert Downey Jr. stayed in character by ‘talking to himself'”: Danny McBride

Los Angeles: Actor and comedian Danny McBride recalled accidentally hearing Hollywood star Robert Downey Jr. going method on himself and staying in character as he went to take a bathroom break in between takes.

Downey Jr. played a method actor in Ben Stiller’s comedy ‘Tropic Thunder’, where McBride played an explosives expert and was given an earpiece to communicate with the set as his character was perched in a watchtower above the production.

The earpiece was connected to the microphones of several of the cast and crew down below.

“I guess during one of the takes, they had left Downey’s mic on, and so I’m sitting up there, and I’m like, ‘Oh, I can hear what he’s saying’,” McBride said in a GQ video interview, reports variety.com.

“He was talking to people, and he was in character the whole time. And then I even watched him walk back to his trailer and saw it from down there, and he was talking to himself…,” he said.

“He made up a song about how he was gonna go p*** in character for no one else’s benefit except for his own,” McBride added.

Downey starred in the film as an egotistical Australian thespian, who takes method acting to an extreme by undergoing “pigmentation alteration” surgery to darken his skin in order to play a soldier in a war movie.

Killer elephant sighted on the borders of Telangana

Kumram Bheem Asifabad: The rogue wild elephant, which killed two farmers in a gap of 24 hours, was reportedly sighted at Palleprakriti Vanam on the outskirts of a forest fringe village Kammargaon village in Penchikalpet mandal early on Friday morning, panicking locals.

The pachyderm was suspected to have reached Kammargaon by crossing Lodpalli Yellur, Mereguda, Kothaguda, Agarguda villages at night, covering a distance of at least 20 kilometers. It was being trailed by two forest beat officers. The officials predicted that it would return to Maharashtra by crossing the Pranahita river at Nandigaon village soon.

The tusker earlier circumambulated around the spot where it trampled a farmer to death at a field at Kondapalli before wandering till Kammargaon throughout night. Footprints of the animal were recorded at the field. It was spotted by passengers of a TSRTC bus on the road between Lodpalli and Sulugupalli villages on Thursday night.

The lone male elephant aged around 20-25 years belonging to Odisha separated from its herd moving in Gadchiroli district of neighboring Maharashtra and entered Telangana by crossing Pranahita river on Wednesday afternoon. It initially trampled Alluri Shankar (55), a farmer at Burepalli village in Chintalamanepalli mandal on the same day before killing Karu Pocham (65), another farmer in a farm at Kondapalli village in Penchikalpet mandal early on Thursday morning.

Joint teams of forest and revenue departments, comprising 70 staffers, were formed to track the movement of the animal. Drone cameras were flown to trace the animal. A team of six experts in chasing the elephant was brought from Maharashtra to drive away the tusker. Extensive publicity was created among the rural folks over the movement of the animal.

Section 144 of CrPC was imposed in Chintalamanepalli, Bejjur and Penchikalpet mandals.

Nadal withdraws from Monte Carlo Masters, French Open participation uncertain

Xinhua reports that Nadal’s withdrawal raises doubts about his bid for a 15th French Open title at Roland Garros in late May.

Nadal withdraws from Monte Carlo Masters, French Open participation uncertain

Paris, April 5 (IANS) Spanish tennis legend Rafael Nadal has announced his withdrawal from the upcoming Monte Carlo Masters due to health reasons.

The withdrawal casts a shadow over Nadal’s hope to return to Roland Garros in late May for his 15th French Open title, reports Xinhua.

“These are very difficult moments for me,” Nadal wrote on social media. “Unfortunately I have to tell you that I am not going to be playing in Monte-Carlo. My body simply won’t allow me. And even if I am working hard and making the maximum effort every day with all the will to play and compete again at tournaments that have been very important for me, the truth is that I can’t play today.”

The 22-time Grand Slam winner went through hip surgery last summer and has played only three matches, all in Brisbane, after his return to action at the beginning of this year. He defeated Dominic Thiem and Jason Kubler before losing in the quarterfinals to Jordan Thompson, when he felt a hip injury flare-up which prompted his withdrawal from the Australian Open.

“You have no idea how hard this is for me to not be able to play these events. The only thing I can do is to accept the situation and try to look at the immediate future keeping the excitement and will to play in order to give me a chance for things to get better,” the Spaniard wrote.

Nadal, the best tennis player on clay ever, has clinched a record 11 titles in Monte Carlo, of which the last was in 2018 — he fell at the semifinals in 2019, the quarters in 2021 and missed the 2020, 2022 and 2023 editions.

On nine of the 11 occasions, Nadal went on to lift the trophy at Roland Garros as well.

Hat-trick Hero Cole Palmer Fires Chelsea To Last-Gasp Win Over Man Utd

Cole Palmer scored twice deep into stoppage time to complete a hat-trick as Chelsea stunned Manchester United 4-3 on Thursday, all but ending their hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League. Erik ten Hag’s men appeared set for a vital win after storming back from 2-0 down to lead 3-2 in a breathless game containing a combined 47 shots. But boyhood United fan Palmer turned the game on its head, levelling from the penalty spot in the 100th minute and then netting the winner moments later in a frantic end to the game at Stamford Bridge.

United were still ahead at 99 minutes 17 seconds, the latest a side has ever led in a Premier League match they have gone on to lose.

The bitter defeat leaves sixth-placed United 11 points off fourth-placed Aston Villa with just eight games to play and facing a season outside Europe’s elite club competition.

But it lifts Mauricio Pochettino’s side to 10th spot in the table, keeping them in the hunt for a European place after an inconsistent season.

Pochettino said his team had started well but the way they conceded “affected the team in an emotional way”.

The Argentine, in his first season at Stamford Bridge, praised 21-year-old Palmer, who has been the club’s standout player since he joined in September.

“The impact is amazing,” he told the BBC. “He is doing a fantastic job. It is difficult to talk more about him. Today he showed the mentality and the quality.

“I said ‘Cole, two minutes more and to believe’.”

Lightning start

Chelsea came into the match without a win against Manchester United in 12 Premier League meetings but were ahead in just the fourth minute through captain Conor Gallagher.

Palmer doubled the home side’s lead with his first penalty in the 19th minute after Anthony felled Marc Cucurella in a torrid opening for the visitors.

But United were handed a lifeline in the 34th minute when Moises Caicedo inexplicably gave the ball away to Alejandro Garnacho, who burst forward and coolly slotted home.

Five minutes later they were all square when Diogo Dalot’s cross found Bruno Fernandes, who headed home at the back post.

Play swung wildly from end to end in a thrilling second period but Garnacho headed home a pinpoint cross from the outside of Antony‘s left boot to put United ahead in the 67th minute.

The visitors appeared set for all three points but the officials signalled there would be eight minutes of added time.

Chelsea were given a lifeline when Dalot lunged at Noni Madueke and referee Jarred Gillett’s on-field decision to award a spot kick was confirmed after a lengthy VAR check.

But the drama did not stop there.

United were caught out by a quick corner from Enzo Fernandez, who played it short to Palmer

The Chelsea man fired home past the despairing Andre Onana with the help of a deflection off United’s Scott McTominay to seal the win, sending the Stamford Bridge crowd wild.

“When the eight minutes got added on it gave us a lift — madness,” Palmer told TNT Sports.

The former Manchester City player has now scored 19 goals for Chelsea since he switched clubs on September 1.

“We need to try to win as many games as possible,” he said. “To win like that, there is nothing better.”

The bitter defeat leaves Ten Hag under mounting pressure at United in just his second season in charge, with new co-owner Jim Ratcliffe yet to decide whether to stick or twist.

Their only remaining hope of silverware is in the FA Cup — they face Coventry in the semi-finals later this month for the right to face City or Chelsea in the final at Wembley.

“Definitely a setback and now we have to deal with this and get up,” said Ten Hag. “We are resilient and you have seen that today.

“The quality of our football is really high, but football is about results and you have to bring it over time.”

US support for Gaza war depends on Israeli protection of civilians: Biden

Biden conveyed to Netanyahu that US backing for the Gaza conflict is contingent upon Israel’s measures to safeguard civilian lives.

US support for Gaza war depends on Israeli protection of civilians: Biden

Washington: US President Joe Biden on Thursday told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that America’s support of Israel’s war in Gaza would be determined by the latter announcing and implementing a “series of specific, concrete, and measurable steps to address civilian harm, humanitarian suffering, and the safety of aid workers”.

The US President also called for an “immediate ceasefire” to stabilize and improve the humanitarian situation there.

The two leaders spoke on the phone amidst growing outrage around the world over the killing of six aid workers of Spanish American chef and restaurateur Jose Andres’s World Central Kitchen.

“President Biden emphasized that the strikes on humanitarian workers and the overall humanitarian situation are unacceptable,” said the White House in a readout of the phone call. “He made clear the need for Israel to announce and implement a series of specific, concrete, and measurable steps to address civilian harm, humanitarian suffering, and the safety of aid workers,” it added.

He went on to warn Netanyahu that the US policy with respect to Gaza “will be determined by our assessment of Israel’s immediate action on these steps”.

The American leader also underscored that an “immediate ceasefire is essential to stabilize and improve the humanitarian situation and protect innocent civilians, and he urged the Prime Minister to empower his negotiators to conclude a deal without delay to bring the hostages home”.

Relations between the US and Israel, strong allies in the best and worst of times, have plunged as Israel under Netanyahu is seen to be conducting the war in complete disregard to US’ concerns.

Biden is facing mounting pressure at home to use US clout to rein in Israel and in an election year the President can barely afford to lose support, especially in key swing states such as Michigan.

In a tense 30-minute call, the US President went further than ever before in pressing Israel to change its conduct of the war in Gaza.

Asked about what specific changes were demanded by the US, John Kirby, the National Security Council spokesperson, told reporters, “What we want to see are some real changes on the Israeli side and, you know, if we don’t see changes from their side there will have to be changes from our side.” But he did not specify them.
