'Will Spoil Atmosphere': Rape Survivor Stopped From Taking Class 12 Boards

Ajmer:

A class 12 student in Rajasthan has alleged that her school did not let her appear for board examinations as she had been gang-raped last year. The student, in her complaint, alleged that the school officials told her that the “atmosphere would be spoiled” if she appeared for the exam.

The private school in Ajmer though claims they did not give an admit card to the student as she had not attended classes for 4 months.

The matter came to light when the student approached a teacher at another school, who advised her to call the child helpline number. Ajmer’s Child Welfare Commission (CWC) has filed a case and will take necessary action after the investigation.

CWC chairperson Anjali Sharma said she had spoken to the student about the entire incident. She said that while the investigation is on, their priority is to ensure that the girl can take the exams she missed in March.

The student was raped by her uncle and two other men in October last year. She told Anjali Sharma that the school had then suggested that she study from home as her coming to school could “spoil the atmosphere”. She agreed and had been preparing for her board exams at home.

When she went to collect her admit card, she was told that she was no longer a student of the school. She then realised that the school had barred her from entering immediately after her rape as the parents of other students objected to her presence.

“When I spoke to the girl, she told me that she was dejected as she is a bright student. She had scored 79% in her class 10 board exams,” Anjali Sharma told NDTV.

“The girl could have done well if she had appeared for her 12th boards, but she may lose a year due to the school’s negligence,” she added.

RBI Keeps Key Lending Rate Unchanged, Says Inflation Moving Closer To Targets

New Delhi:

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Friday kept its key lending rate unchanged at 6.5% for the seventh consecutive time. The decision was taken by a 5:1 majority at the bi-monthly Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting, said RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das. An unchanged repo rate means the loan interest rates too are likely to remain unchanged.

The RBI had paused the rate increase cycle last April after six straight rate hikes of 250 basis points since May 2022.

‘Inflation Closer To Targets’

Inflation is moving closer to targets, said the RBI Governor, projecting retail inflation for the current year at 4.5%. The RBI has been mandated by the government to maintain retail inflation at 4% with a 2% margin on either side.

Core inflation has declined steadily over the last nine months while fuel component remained in deflation for six straight months, Mr Das said. Robust growth prospects provide space for the policy to remain focussed on inflation, he added.

However, uncertainties in food prices continue to pose challenges, he said, adding that the MPC remains vigilant to the upside risk to inflation that may derail the path of disinflation. “Food inflation continues to exhibit considerable volatility which is impeding the ongoing disinflation process,” he said.

‘7% Growth Projected’

The RBI Governor said the country is projected to grow 7% this financial year, with 7.1% growth expected in the April-June quarter and 6.9% in the July-September quarter. “The risks are evenly balanced.”

The Indian rupee has remained largely rangebound and is the most stable among the major currencies, said Mr Das. “Compared to the last three years, the rupee exhibited the lowest volatility in FY24. The relative stability of the rupee reflects sound macroeconomic fundamentals and external position,” he added.

He also said that India’s liquidity situation improved in March while the average borrowings under the marginal standing facility, which allows banks to borrow funds, moderated.

India continues to remain the largest receiver of remittances with the country’s foreign portfolio investment seeing a significant turnaround, the RBI Governor said, adding that its forex reserves are now at a record high.

Mr Das also said that the global economy has remained resilient and global trade is expected to grow faster in 2024.

Premier League: Liverpool reclaims top spot with 3-1 victory against Sheffield

Liverpool: Liverpool returned to the top of the Premier League table with a 3-1 victory over Sheffield United at Anfield on Thursday night.

Darwin Nunez gave the Reds an early lead when Ivo Grbic’s attempted clearance from a backpass crashed into him and spun over the line with 17 minutes on the clock.

The hosts dominated possession, but were pegged back when Gustavo Hamer headed a cross against Conor Bradley and into the back of the net shortly after the break.

Nevertheless, fears of points being dropped were allayed when Alexis Mac Allister thumped Liverpool back in front with 13 minutes of normal time remaining after a clearance had been deflected into his path on the edge of the box.

Cody Gakpo put the seal on the victory when he headed in an Andy Robertson cross from 15 yards out in the 90th minute as the Reds regained top spot in the standings, two points ahead of Arsenal.

After a loss Sheff Utd remain at the bottom, 10 points behind 17th-placed Nottingham Forest.

ECI issues notice to Chandrababu Naidu over remarks on CM Jagan

Amaravathi: The Election Commission has issued a notice to Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief N Chandrababu Naidu for alleged derogatory remarks against Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy.

The TDP chief was issued notice on Thursday for purportedly violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) during his campaign speeches on March 31 by allegedly referring to CM Jagan as “Monster,” “Animal,” “Thief,” and various other offensive terms.

As per the notice issued by the Chief Electoral Officer of Andhra Pradesh, Naidu has been given 48 hours to provide an explanation regarding the derogatory remarks made against the YSR Congress Party and its leader, Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy.

The notice was issued following a complaint filed by Lella Appi Reddy, State General Secretary of the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP), and another individual.

According to the notice, TDP Chief N Chandrababu Naidu, during his campaign rallies held in Yemmiganur, Markapuram, and Bapatla constituencies, reportedly used derogatory language, referring to Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy as a Monster, Animal, Thief and various other insulting and offensive terms.

The Election Commission has reviewed the speeches in question, which were provided in a pen drive, and has determined that they prima facie violate provisions of the Model Code of Conduct.

The Assembly and Lok Sabha elections in Andhra Pradesh are scheduled for May 13, with vote counting set for June 4.
Notably, the Andhra Pradesh Assembly consists of 175 seats and a party would need at least 88 seats to form a government.
In the 2014 Assembly elections, the Chandrababu Naidu-led TDP won with a majority of 102 seats. Jagan Mohan Reddy-led YSRCP won 67 seats. The BJP could only win four seats by contesting against the two regional heavyweights.

In the 2019 Assembly elections, the YSRCP won with a thumping majority of 151 seats, while the TDP was confined to 23 seats.

The election for 543 Lok Sabha seats in the country will be held in seven phases starting April 19. The counting of votes for the Lok Sabha as well as the assemblies will take place on June 4.

Watch: Preity Zinta's Emotional Rollercoaster As Shashank Takes PBKS Home

Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Thursday pulled off the highest successful run-chase of IPL 2024, beating Gujarat Titans (GT) by three wickets at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. All-rounder Shashank Singh was the unlikely hero for Punjab, smashing an unbeaten 61 off 29 balls to help his side chase down a target of 200. PBKS were reeling at 70/4 at one stage and it looked that GT were on course for a third straight win at home. However, Shashank and Ashutosh Sharma put on a match-defying stand to see PBKS through in the contest.

As Shashank hit the winning run off Darshan Nalkande on the penultimate delivery, PBKS co-owner and bollywood actress Preity Zinta jumped from her seat, joining the celebrations from the stands.

During the IPL auction last year, there was a confusion regarding Shashank’s purchase. It was a case of mistaken identity that PBKS incurred during the acceleratore period with two players having the same name.

After purchasing the right Shashank, PBKS put out a clarification tweet to burst the bubble, and it seems that the players too has responded well after taking Zinta’s side home.

Coming to the match, Gill struck the highest individual score of the IPL 2024 – 89* and Rahul Tewatia came at the end to play a short cameo of 23* in a mere 8 delivers to power GT to 199/4 in the first inning.

In reply, Shashank Singh’s (61*) blitz and Ashutosh’s (31) rattled GT as they chased down the target and clinched a three-wicket victory for the Punjab Kings.

Following the win, the Punjab-based franchise stand in the fifth place of the IPL 2024 standings with four points. On the other hand, Gujarat hold the sixth place with 4 points.

PBKS captain Shikhar Dhawan praised both Ashutosh Sharma and Shashank Singh for building a crucial partnership in the end.

“It was an amazing game, very very close, I’m glad the boys did the job. The plan was to give a good start but I got out unfortunately but we were around 60 runs at the end of the powerplay, we kept building partnerships and Shashank came in and played really well. The way Shashank came in and hit those sixes, it was brilliant, the way he hit the ball, it looked effortless. He started from No. 7 and is now showing his positive mindset. He is playing in the IPL after a long time and he played so well. I will also mention about Ashutosh, he came in and played a good knock under pressure,” Dhawan said.

Missing Dog's Dramatic Reunion With US Family, 2,000 Miles From Home

Staff at the Grosse Pointe Animal Adoption Society found she had a microchip.

Washington, United States:

A dog that went missing in California was found more than 2,000 miles away in suburban Detroit, prompting a dramatic reunion with its owners.

Police picked up the terrier-mix called Mishka — who vanished last July — and took her to an animal shelter after a resident reported a stray dog near Harper Woods, in the midwestern state of Michigan.

Staff at the Grosse Pointe Animal Adoption Society (GPAAS) found she had a microchip, which identified her owners as living 2,343 miles away in San Diego — though it was unclear how she had traveled so far.

Owner Mehrad Houman and his family happened to be on vacation in the midwestern city of Minneapolis around the time Mishka was found, GPAAS said.

Though the drive from Minneapolis to collect her from the shelter was shorter than a trip from California, it still took 10 hours.

“This is a tale that Hollywood would love to tell,” GPAAS said in a Facebook post on Wednesday.

Pictures and videos shared by the group showed Mishka, a scraggly, small, white-haired dog, wagging her tail as she was reunited with her owners.

“This is the happy ending we all wanted,” GPAAS wrote.

It added that Mishka was due to fly back to California with her family after being checked by a veterinarian.

"Modi Stands For Master Of Digital Information": Union Minister Anurag Thakur

'Modi Stands For Master Of Digital Information': Union Minister Anurag Thakur

Bengaluru:

Union Minister Anurag Thakur said the Centre has set a target to make India ‘Viksit Bharat’ by 2047 and slammed the previous UPA government over corruption and scams.

Addressing IT professionals here on Thursday, he said, “… IT stands for ‘India Tomorrow’ and what is the target for India tomorrow? The target is to develop India into Viksit Bharat by 2047.” Taking a dig at the Congress, the Union Minister said, “Can you imagine 10 years back our countrymen were finding it even difficult to think about freeing themselves from the clutches of corrupt Congress party and its alliance partners where one after another scam took place.”

Referring to the various scams during the UPA regime, he said because we have a short memory, sometimes we forget especially those aged between 18 and 22, they were only eight and 10 years old then.

“They are not aware of 2G scam or CWG scam… They didn’t know about AgustaWestland, Coal scam and all that…” “It is our duty to remind them that between 2009 to 2014, there were so many scams in this country that by 2014 it looked like the growth (of the country) was stagnant, inflation was high and policy paralysis was hitting the country hard and we were looking at an option,” he said.

Thakur said the country was looking at a way out and during that time, the BJP came up with an alternative leader named Narendra Modi.

“Modi was a ray of hope in 2014. We promised that we will give you a clean government and I’m glad that in the last 10 years we can proudly say in our government not even a single penny of corruption allegation is levelled against Modi or his ministers,” he said.

Hailing the Narendra Modi-led government, Thakur said MODI stands for “Master of Digital Information” and also maker of developed India – Viksit Bharat.

Underscoring that Indian talent was the biggest resource that the country has, he said, “We need to reskill them, upskill them. Covid has taught us whatever you may learn in the era of technology, you have to keep reskilling yourself… and that artificial intelligence will play a very very important role, our talent which is the Indian talent in the field of IT (information technology) will play a very very important role in bringing billions of dollars and jobs to India.” Targeting the Congress over I-T department notices to the party, he said, “political parties don’t have to pay income tax they have been waived but they have to file income tax returns. But look at the country’s oldest party… they fail to file their income tax returns.

“If you don’t file your income tax returns, you will get a notice then why should Congress be treated above law. That is what the Income Tax department did, they gave them a notice, but they didn’t reply, look at the arrogance they didn’t reply,” he said.
