Telangana to write to Centre to spare NSP water

Hyderabad: Besides identifying six major sources from where water can be drawn reaching out to their minimum drawdown levels (MDDLs) to address the water scarcity concerns, the State is seeking the intervention of the Ministry of Jal Shakti to give precedence to the drinking water needs of Telangana over the irrigation needs of Andhra Pradesh in sharing the Krishna river water, especially the limited water available in the Nagarjuna Sagar Project.

The State will be writing to Ministry of Jal Shakti seeking immediate steps to stop release of two TMC water allotted of late to AP and spare whatever little is left in the project only for meeting the drinking water needs in Telangana. The State authorities are also keen on prevailing on their AP counterparts on this count. They intend to assure AP that the water share they could spare for meeting the emergency situation in Telangana, can be availed once the things improved after May next.

The State Irrigation authorities have been drawing 1500 cusecs from the Nagarjuna Sagar project from April 1 as the storage in the drinking water sources in three districts- Nalgonda, Suryapet and Khammam touched rock bottom level. The Palair balancing reservoir was partly filled on priority basis along with other projects and tanks as a precautionary measure. The left canal will be closed on a day or two, but the water drawls to meet the drinking water needs in Hyderabad will continue.

The irrigation officials said arrangement have to be made for pumping water from six sources – Nagarjuna Sagar project, Srisailam, Osman Sagar, Himayatsagar and Yellampallai. The Singur project will be kept stand by as part of the arrangement. The NSP would be the more dependable source where from some ten tmc could made available by drawing water up to the depth of 505 ft as against the MDDL of 510 ft. The Himayat Sagar and Osmansagar projects would be able to yield some five tmc to meet the crisis. The Yellampalli project has about seven tmc of water available.

AP has already complained to the KRMB opposing the drawls by Telangana from the Nagarjuna Sagar project while the latter has been contending that it has till been left with an unutilised entitlement up to some eight tmc for the current water year.

AP had drawn more than 100 tmc of water over and above its entitlement in a single water year in the past, said officials.

"Why Did KKR Not Retain Me?": Shubman Gill Tells Ed Sheeran To Ask SRK

Indian cricket team batter Shubman Gill was part of the Kolkata Knight Riders franchise from 2018 to 2021 but the association ended when he was not retained by the franchise ahead of the mega auction. He went on to join Gujarat Titans and won the IPL title in the very first season before becoming the captain in the 2024 season. While there has been no friction between Gill and KKR in the past, the youngster’s comment during an interaction with famous singer Ed Sheeran left the social media in splits. During the conversation, Ed Sheeran came to know that Gill played for a cricket franchise owned by Shah Rukh Khan. Sheeran replied that he was meeting SRK later for dinner and Gill was quick to say – “Ask him why did they not retain me?”. It was a light moment that has gone viral on social media.

Gujarat Titans skipper Shubman Gill’s unblemished unbeaten half-century was overshadowed by uncapped Shashank Singh’s fiery knock as Punjab Kings registered a thrilling three-wicket win in an Indian Premier League match here on Thursday.
Gill made 89 off 48 balls, the highest individual score this season so far, and in the process hit six fours and four maximums to guide GT to an imposing 199 for four.

He was also helped generously by B Sai Sudharsan‘s 19-ball 33 and Rahul Tewatia‘s eight-ball unbeaten 23.

But there was a heartbreak in store for GT as Shashank played the knock of his life, remaining unbeaten on 61 off 29 balls during which he hit six boundaries and four sixes to guide PBKS home with a ball to spare.

He was ably supported by Ashutosh Sharma (31 off 17) as the duo shared 43 runs off just 22 balls to raise PBKS’ hopes, which eventually came true.

Chasing a big total, PBKS suffered an early jolt in the form of captain Shikhar Dhawan, who played on to an Umesh Yadav delivery while going for a shot through the cover region.

Jonny Bairstow (22 off 13), not in the best of form, was then cleaned up by Afghanistan left-arm wrist spinner Noor Ahmad.

PBKS kept on losing wickets at regular intervals as the next to follow was Prabhsimran Singh (35 off 24; 5x4s, 1×6), caught by Mohit Sharma at third-man as the batter went for a heave against a tossed-up delivery from Ahmad only to get a top edge as PBKS slid to 64 for three by the end of the eighth over.

Sikandar Raza was dropped twice in Umesh Yadav’s 11th over, albeit both were difficult chances.

But it was Shashank who capitalised on the lives, clobbering Umesh for two boundaries and a six to pick up 17 runs in the 11th over.

Raza, however, didn’t last long as he edged a Mohit hard-length delivery to Wriddhiman Saha behind the stumps.

Shashank kept on using his long handle, picking up a few boundaries and sixes to keep PBKS in the hunt.

Shashank held on to one end and brought up his 50 off just 25 balls with the help of five boundaries and three hits over the fence.

Shashank single-handedly kept PBKS in the fray with his pyrotechnics. He was ably supported by Ashutosh as the duo snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.

Radiation Leak In Russia's Khabarovsk: What We Know So Far

Khabarovsk is close to the border with China and has a population of 630,000.

Russia has declared a “state of emergency” in Khabarovsk, a city on the Amur River in southeastern part of the country, after a mystery potentially cancer-causing radiation leak was detected. Local authorities have restricted access to Khabarovsk, an industrial district. The news has generated a lot of buzz across the world with people remembering the nuclear disaster in Chernobyl, which was the part of erstwhile Soviet Union, in 1986. Authorities have identified the source of the radiation in Khabarovsk. The city is close to the border with China and has a population of 630,000.

Here’s what we know about the radiation leak:

  • Russian news agency TASS said in a report that elevated radiation levels were detected near a power pylon about 2.5 km from residential buildings. It added that source of the radiation has been found.
  • The source was “removed and placed in a protective container” and “transported to a radioactive waste storage facility”.
  • No one had been injured or exposed to radiation and “there is no threat to the health of citizens”, TASS quoted the local branch of Russia’s consumer safety watchdog as saying.
  • Videos from the city have appeared on social media and show a man wearing a nuclear protective mask with a radiation reader, according to Metro. The metre on the device quickly rises as the man walks over a “waste dump”, the outlet further said.
  • The man is heard saying on camera that the number on the metre was 20, enough potentially to increase cancer risk, damage DNA, cause foetal damage, and threaten the health of children, the outlet further said.
  • Authorities said radiation levels would be monitored for the next two days and the source of the radiation would be investigated.

Centre Drops References To Babri Masjid, Gujarat Riots In School Textbooks

References To Babri Masjid, Gujarat Riots Dropped In NCERT School Textbooks

Representational Image

New Delhi:

Dropping references to the demolition of Babri Masjid in Ayodhya, the killing of Muslims in Gujarat riots and Hindutva, and tweaking the reference to Manipur’s merger with India are among the latest set of revisions made public by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) in its textbooks.

While NCERT did not comment on the topics being dropped, officials said the tweaks are part of the routine updation and are not linked to the development of new books as per the New Curriculum Framework (NCF). The changes have been made in the Political Science textbooks of classes 11 and 12, besides others.

According to a document detailing the changes prepared by the curriculum drafting committee of the NCERT, the references to the Ram Janmabhoomi movement have been tweaked “as per latest development in politics”.

Chapter 8 on Secularism in class 11 textbook earlier said, “More than 1,000 persons, mostly Muslims, were massacred during the post Godhra riots in Gujarat in 2002.” It has been changed to “more than 1,000 persons were killed during the post Godhra riots in Gujarat in 2002”. The NCERT’s rationale behind the change is “in any riots people across communities suffer. It cannot be just one community”.

On Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, the earlier textbook stated “India claims that this area is under illegal occupation. Pakistan describes this area as Azad Pakistan”. The changed version says, “However, it is the Indian territory which is under illegal occupation of Pakistan and called as Pakistan occupied Jammu and Kashmir (POJK).” The NCERT’s rationale behind the alteration is that the “change that has been introduced is in complete concurrence with the latest position of the Govt of India in regard to Jammu and Kashmir”.

On Manipur, the earlier textbook stated, “The Government of India succeeded in pressurising the Maharaja into signing a Merger Agreement in September 1949, without consulting the popularly elected Legislative Assembly of Manipur. This caused a lot of anger and resentment in Manipur, the repercussions of which are still being felt.” The changed version says, “The Government of India succeeded in persuading the Maharaja into signing a Merger Agreement in September 1949.” In chapter 8, Recent Developments in Indian Politics, references to the “Ayodhya demolition” has been dropped.

“What is the legacy of the Ram Janmabhoomi movement and the Ayodhya demolition for the nature of political mobilisation?” has been changed to “What is the legacy of the Ram Janmabhoomi movement?”.

In the same chapter, references to the Babri Masjid and the politics of Hindutva were dropped.

The earlier paragraph read: “Fourth, a number of events culminated in the demolition of the disputed structure at Ayodhya (known as Babri Masjid) in December 1992. This event symbolised and triggered various changes in the politics of the country and intensified debates about the nature of Indian nationalism and secularism. These developments are associated with the rise of the BJP and the politics of ‘Hindutva’.” This was changed to: “Fourth, the centuries old legal and political dispute over the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya started influencing the politics of India which gave birth to various political changes. The Ram Janmabhoomi Temple Movement, becoming the central issue, transformed the direction of the discourse on secularism and democracy. These changes culminated in the construction of the Ram Temple at Ayodhya following the decision of the constitutional bench of the Supreme Court (which was announced on November 9, 2019).”

In chapter 5 titled “Democratic Rights”, a reference to the Gujarat riots was dropped in the caption to a news collage.

The earlier version was – “Do you notice references to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in the news collage on this Page? These references reflect the growing awareness of human rights and struggles for human dignity. Many cases of human rights violations in diverse fields, for instance, Gujarat riots, are being brought to the public notice from across India.” This was changed to “Many cases of human rights violations in diverse fields are being brought to the public notice from across India.” The NCERT had last week communicated to CBSE schools that new textbooks have been developed for classes 3 and 6 while the textbooks for other classes as per NCF remain unchanged.

However, the series of changes will now be introduced in the books which are yet to hit the market even as the new session has already begun.
