UN Worried Israel Could Target Iran's Nuclear Sites, Urges Restraint

UN Worried Israel Could Target Iran's Nuclear Sites, Urges Restraint

Iran attacked on Israel in retaliation airstrike on its embassy compound in Syria on April 1.

United Nations:

The United Nations nuclear watchdog chief said on Monday he is concerned about Israel possibly targeting Iranian nuclear facilities, but that International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspections of Iranian facilities would resume on Tuesday.

Israel’s military chief said on Monday his country would respond to a weekend missile and drone attack by Iran, launched in retaliation for a suspected Israeli airstrike on its embassy compound in Damascus on April 1. This comes amid calls for restraint by allies anxious to avoid an escalation of conflict in the Middle East.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said Iran closed its nuclear facilities on Sunday over “security considerations” and that while they reopened on Monday, he kept IAEA inspectors away “until we see that the situation is completely calm.”

“We are going to resume tomorrow,” Grossi told reporters in New York. “This has not had an impact on our inspection activity.”

When asked about the possibility of an Israel strike on Iranian nuclear facilities, Grossi said: “We are always concerned about this possibility.” He urged “extreme restraint.”

The IAEA regularly inspects Iran’s main nuclear facilities like its enrichment plants at Natanz that are at the heart of the country’s nuclear programme.

Iran says its nuclear programme is entirely peaceful, but Western powers accuse Tehran of seeking to make nuclear bombs.

Hamas Says Israel Wants Temporary Ceasefire Agreement In Gaza: Report

Hamas Says Israel Wants Temporary Ceasefire Agreement In Gaza: Report

Qatar, Egypt and the US are mediating a deal between Hamas and Israel to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza.

Gaza City:

Israel is seeking a ceasefire agreement with Hamas to secure the release of its hostages before resuming military operations in the Gaza Strip, Ezzat al-Rishq, a member of Hamas’ political bureau, has said.

Al-Rishq said on Monday that Israel wanted “a temporary agreement to release its prisoners, in order to resume war and extermination thereafter”, Xinhua news agency reported, citing a statement.

Noting that the attempts by Israel to release its hostages “by force have failed”, the Hamas official stressed that “there is no alternative to a real deal with the resistance.”

He emphasized that a permanent cessation of firing is the only guarantee to protect the Palestinian people “and to stop the bloodshed and massacres,” adding that Hamas adheres to its position represented by the complete withdrawal of the Israeli army and the return of displaced persons to their homes freely.

Qatar and Egypt, along with the United States, are mediating a deal between Hamas and Israel to exchange prisoners and achieve a ceasefire in Gaza.

Israel estimated that there were still about 134 Israelis held hostage in Gaza, whereas Hamas announced that 70 of them had been killed in Israeli airstrikes.

More than 9,000 Palestinians were held in Israeli prisons, with some having died since the onset of the conflict in Gaza on October 7, 2023, according to HaMoked, an Israeli human rights group.

Yale students threaten hunger strike over university connection to Gaza war

More than a dozen students at Yale University threaten to go on hunger strike over the seat of learning’s connection to American arms manufacturers that contribute to the Israeli regime’s ongoing genocidal war on the Gaza Strip.

The group announced its decision in a letter to university President Peter Salovey, American news website, Mondoweiss, reported on Monday.

“We here at Yale University have witnessed this ongoing genocide from the comforts of not only the heart of the empire that is funding the military conquest and colonization of Palestine, but from the distance and security provided by the investments of this University which profit from this mass ethnic cleansing,” the letter read.

Close to 34,000 Palestinians, mostly women, children, and adolescents, have died since October 7, when the Israeli regime launched the war in response to Operation al-Aqsa Storm by Gaza’s resistance movements.

The United States, Israel’s biggest ally, has been lending unstinting political, military, and intelligence support to the regime since the onset of the brutal military onslaught.

“Our existence in this University and this country are ones defined by necropolitics. Our lives here exist as they do because of the investment in the deaths of Palestinians by Yale and the US government,” the students added.

They demanded that the university divest from all weapons manufacturing companies contributing to the Israeli assault.

Last year, hundreds of Yale students held a campus-wide walkout in protest at Washington’s all-out support for the genocide.

Pro-Palestinian student activism has grown significantly across the US since the launch of the Washington-backed Israeli war.

Ever since, students at Brown University and the University of South Florida have launched similar hunger strikes.

Last month, a college student body at the Columbia University voted in favor of boycotting all companies that support the Israeli regime’s apartheid and genocidal practices.

In mid-November, more than 40 student groups at the university formed a coalition to push for the seat of learning’s divestment from the “Israeli apartheid,” and “challenge the settler-colonial violence” that Tel Aviv has been perpetrating with the support of the United States and its allies.

Iran to UN: Anti-Israeli retaliation could have been wider in scope

Iran’s foreign minister has said the country’s recent retaliatory strikes against the Israeli regime could have been wider in scope.

Hossein Amir-Abdollahian made the remarks in a telephone conversation with the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday.

The top diplomat was referring to the Islamic Republic’s Saturday reprisal against the Israeli regime’s deadly attack of April 1 against the country’s diplomatic premises in the Syrian capital Damascus.

“Although, the Islamic Republic was capable of conducting this operation across a wider radius, it just targeted parts of the Zionist regime’s positions, from which the [Israeli] attack against our country’s Embassy in Damascus had taken place,” the foreign minister said.

The retaliation, he added, fitted within the country’s right to legitimate defense and the international law.

Due to the UN Security Council’s refusal to condemn the attack, the Islamic Republic was left with no option but to resort to the defensive operation and punish the Zionist regime, Amir-Abdollahian stated.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the foreign minister pointed to the Israeli regime’s genocidal war against the Gaza Strip, which began on October 7 last year following Operation al-Aqsa Storm by the coastal sliver’s resistance groups.

“The United States and its allies refuse to stop the regime,” he noted, and denounced the international community’s failure to put an end to the genocide.

The Iranian official welcomed the United Nations’ efforts towards cessation of the warfare and transfer of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian territory.

For his part, Guterres pointed to Iran’s retaliation against the Israeli regime, advising parties to regional conflicts to exercise restraint.

The UN chief noted how he had condemned acts of violation targeting diplomatic premises on several occasions.

He expressed delight in Iran’s current refusal to take additional measures against the occupying regime, advising Tel Aviv to refrain from committing fresh aggression against the Islamic Republic.

This IPL has now seen the top three highest scores in the history of the tournament.

257/5 – LSG vs PBKS, Mohali, 2023
248/3 – RCB vs GL, Bengaluru, 2016
246/5 – CSK vs RR, Chennai, 2010

SRH’s Travis Head came out all guns blazing as he scored his first IPL ton in just 39 deliveries – the fourth fastest century in the league.

On a M Chinnaswamy pitch, that looked like a batting paradise, Sunrisers Hyderabad openers Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma went on the charge. With Maxwell missing from their squad, RCB gave the new ball to offspinner Will Jacks to try and take it away from the left-handers, who bowled a decent over for RCB.

Reece Topley, bowling the second over of Power-play, was taken down for 20 runs. Head started with a boundary, maximum, and then Abhishek ended the over with a maximum. The fifth over of the day was bowled by Lockie Ferguson and his second and third balls were both dispatched for sixes by Head; the first a clip over square leg, and the next a swat over midwicket. Head ended the over with a four by going over mid-off.

Yash Dayal concluded the Power-play with another 20-run over, and Head flew his way to a 20-ball fifty including three fours and five sixes. SRH were 76 without loss after six overs.

Abhishek Sharma departed after scoring 34 off 22 deliveries failing to put the leg-side delivery of Topley over the boundary. Both the batters added 108 runs in mere deliveries for the visitors. Head on the other hand slammed the fastest century for Sunrisers Hyderabad in 39 deliveries, beaking David Warner’s previous record of 43 deliveries.

Opening the batting for Hyderabad, Head went off to absolute carnage and reached a century in 39 deliveries with the help of nine fours and eight sixes. It was also his maiden IPL century. However, he departed after scoring 102 off 41 deliveries on Ferguson’s bowling. Ferguson went for a knuckleball on the third ball of the 13th over, and Head sent it straight into the air.

This was the fourth fastest century in the history of the IPL only behind Chris Gayle, Yusuf Pathan, and David Miller. Head broke the record of his countrymate, David Warner, who smashed a 43 deliveries century against Kolkata Knight Riders back in 2017.

SRH were 171/2 after 13 overs as Aiden Markram joined his South Africa team-mate Klaasen in the middle.

RCB entered this match without a single specialist spinner. They went for the off-spin of Will Jacks, who was taken for 32 in his three overs. RCB’s pace bowlers Topley, Dayal, Ferguson, and Vyshak were belted for 137 off ten overs. Mahipal Lomror, bowling the 14th over, was smashed for 18 runs as SRH reached 189 for 2.

The 15th over ended with Heinrich Klaasen clubbing a six over the bowler Vijaykumar Vyshak’s head, capitalising on a low full toss to send it bang into the sightscreen, reaching his half-century in just 23 balls.

US House To Vote On Israel, Ukraine Aid Bills This Week: Speaker

US House To Vote On Israel, Ukraine Aid Bills This Week: Speaker

US House Speaker Republican-controlled chamber would vote this week on aid bills for Ukraine and Israel.

Washington:

US House Speaker Mike Johnson said Monday that his Republican-controlled chamber would vote this week on aid bills for Ukraine and Israel, after months of stalling over pressure from his party’s right-wing.

“This week, we will consider separate bills with a structured and germane amendment process to… fund our ally Israel, support Ukraine in its war against Russian aggression, strengthen our allies in the Indo-Pacific (and ) pass additional measures to counter our adversaries and strengthen our national security,” Johnson said on X.

US assistance has languished in a divided Congress, with Johnson — an ally of presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump — blocking an earlier $95 billion in aid sought by Biden for Israel, Ukraine and Taiwan. This bill had passed the Senate.

“We won’t be voting on the Senate supplemental in its current form,” Johnson told reporters Monday, referring to the $95 billion package, “but we will vote on each of these measures separately in four different pieces.”

Earlier Tuesday, the White House ruled out any bill that only contained aid for Israel.

“We will not accept a standalone. A standalone would not help Israel and Ukraine,” White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told a briefing.

Johnson is walking a knife-edge on aid for Ukraine, as Trump and far-right lawmakers in the House of Representatives have grown skeptical of pouring billions of dollars into Kyiv’s fight against Russia’s invading forces.

Ukraine has in recent months grown increasingly frustrated at delays in Western aid, including air defenses it says are urgently needed to repel Russian attacks.

Probe Agency Arrests Man Who "Managed" AAP Funds For Goa Polls

In Delhi Liquor Policy Case, Probe Agency Arrests Man Who 'Managed' AAP Funds For Goa Polls

Chanpreet Singh has been sent to the Enforcement Directorate custody till April 18 (Representational)

New Delhi:

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has arrested Chanpreet Singh, who allegedly “managed” cash funds for AAP’s campaign in the 2022 Goa Assembly polls, in connection with the Delhi excise policy-linked money laundering case, official sources said Monday.

Singh was taken into custody under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) on April 12 and was produced before a special court here the next day, the sources said.

He has been sent to the ED custody till April 18 by the court, they said.

This is the 17th arrest in the case by the ED. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, his party colleague and former Delhi deputy CM Manish Sisodia, BRS leader K Kavitha and a number of liquor businessmen and others have been arrested earlier by the federal agency.

Singh was earlier arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation too in the same case. The money laundering case stems from the CBI FIR.

The ED has informed the court through its official documents that Chanpreet Singh “managed” cash payments for the campaign of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) during the 2022 Goa elections and had a “relationship” with the political outfit that rules Delhi currently.

It has been alleged by the agency that the ‘South Group’– comprising Kavitha, TDP candidate from Ongole Lok Sabha seat Magunta Sreenivasulu Reddy, his son Raghav Magunta, businessman Sarath Chandra Reddy and others — paid Rs 100 crore bribe to the AAP for obtaining a prime position in the Delhi liquor market as part of the now-scrapped excise policy for 2021-22.

Out of these alleged kickbacks, the ED has claimed, Rs 45 crore was used by the AAP to fund its Goa election campaign.

The ED has claimed that cash payments were made to survey workers, area managers, assembly managers and others in Goa who were engaged in election campaign activities of the AAP and these people told the agency that this was “managed” by a person named Chanpreet Singh.

It also said that an employee of an ‘Angadia’ firm, which allegedly moved cash funds illegally, had “admitted” to disbursing huge amounts of cash in Goa to some people including Singh, who used to work for Chariot Productions Media Pvt Ltd.

Chariot Productions was the company engaged by the AAP for its Goa poll campaign. The company’s director, Rajesh Joshi, was arrested in the case by the ED last year.

The ED had alleged that Singh collected more than Rs 17 crore (Rs 17,38,14,500 in total) in over 18 instances from the ‘Angadia’ company employee between August 2021-January 2022, and this was “also corroborated” by CDR (call data records of mobile phone) analysis.

It said Singh “received salary from the Aam Aadmi Party” in February 2022 and also received salary from a company called Wizspk Communications and PR Ltd, which was engaged by the Delhi government.

Moreover, the ED claimed that he had also received funds from OML (Only Much Louder) events management company of arrested AAP communications in-charge Vijay Nair, and “these facts are prima facie reflective of his relationship with the Aam Aadmi Party”.

In a related development, Mr Kejriwal on Monday did not get any interim relief from the Supreme Court which sought a response from the ED by April 24 on his plea challenging his arrest in the money laundering case.

The excise case pertains to alleged corruption and money laundering in formulating and executing the Delhi government’s excise policy for 2021-22, which was later scrapped.

Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena recommended a CBI probe into the alleged irregularities in the formulation and implementation of the liquor policy. Subsequently, the ED registered a case under the PMLA.

Bidens Earned $620,000 In 2023, Tax Filing Shows

Bidens Earned $620,000 In 2023, Tax Filing Shows

The Bidens reported paying $146,629 in federal taxes, for an effective rate of 23.7 percent.

Washington:

US President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden publicly released their 2023 tax return on Monday, carrying on a tradition of transparency temporarily interrupted under predecessor Donald Trump.

The annual, unwritten custom is designed to build trust in the White House. Other politicians as well as candidates often also take part.

The Bidens earned $619,976 in 2023, most of which was derived from the president’s $400,000 salary and Jill Biden’s $85,985 compensation for her teaching job at a college in nearby Virginia.

That number was up from the $579,514 the couple earned in 2022 and $610,702 in 2021.

The Bidens’ transparency comes after Trump opted not to follow the bipartisan tradition.

Billionaire businessman Trump refused both as a candidate and once in office to allow the public to see his tax return, a document detailing all sources and amounts of income, among other financial records.

When several years of his returns were finally made public after a legal battle waged by Democrats in Congress, it emerged there were years when Trump was paying almost no income tax, due to business losses.

He has continued to keep his tax returns private as he wages his 2024 campaign to return to the White House.

The Bidens reported paying $146,629 in federal taxes, for an effective rate of 23.7 percent.

Joe Biden also reported paying $30,908 in Delaware income taxes, while Jill Biden paid $3,549 in Virginia income taxes.

“President Biden believes that all occupants of the Oval Office should be open and honest with the American people, and that the longstanding tradition of annually releasing presidential tax returns should continue unbroken,” the White House said in a statement.

It said this year marked the 26th year of Biden sharing his tax returns publicly.

The Bidens also reported $20,477 in charitable donations.

Vice President Kamala Harris and husband Doug Emhoff also released their tax returns, showing $450,299 in income and $23,026 in charitable donations.

They paid $88,570 in federal income tax in addition to $15,167 in California income tax and $11,599 in District of Colombia income tax.
