Body of Hyderabad student found dead in US brought home

Hyderabad: The body of Mohammed Abdul Arfath, a 25-year-old student, who was found dead in a lake in Cleveland, US last week after being missing since March 7, has been brought to his residence in Nacharam near Hyderabad late on Monday night.

Abdul Arfath, who was pursuing master’s degree in Information Technology at Cleveland University, Ohio, has not been in touch with the family since March 7 and his family here had received a ransom call.

The Consulate General of India in New York had announced on April 9 that the student was found dead in Cleveland, Ohio.

AIMIM MLC Mirza Rahmat Baig completed the paperwork and received the body at the Airport. The body was later shifted to Arfath’s residence in Medchal Malkajgiri district near Hyderabad. The last rites will be performed on Tuesday.

AIMIM chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi had earlier spoken to Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra and also wrote a letter to the Consulate General of India in New York for necessary assistance in finding Abdul Arfath.

Arfath went to the US in May 2023 to pursue a Masters in IT from Cleveland University. His family claims he has not spoken to them since March 7.

Arfath’s father Mohammed Saleem had received a call on March 17 from an unidentified person, who claimed that Arfath had been kidnapped allegedly by a gang selling drugs and demanded USD 1,200 to release him.

The caller threatened to sell Arfath’s kidneys if the ransom wasn’t paid. Saleem had informed his relatives in the US, who filed a missing complaint with the Cleveland police. The police had issued a watch order.

The family wrote to the Indian Consulate in Chicago on March 18 to help trace Arfath.

Arfath had reportedly left his home at Reserve Square on March 5 and had not returned.

The student’s body was found in a lake in Cleveland in a decomposed state on April 8. The body was recovered after police launched an investigation into a bag containing a laptop and ID cards found by a jogger.

Cleveland police are investigating the cause of the death.

"No Problem With Helicopter Search But…": Trinamool's Abhishek Banerjee

'No Problem With Helicopter Search But...': Trinamool's Abhishek Banerjee

Purba Medinipur (West Bengal):

Trinamool Congress General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee clarified that the Election Commission or the Income Tax is free to search his helicopter but the officials cannot stop them by not permitting the chopper for a trial run even after not finding anything after the search.

“I do not have any problem with search or seizure in the helicopter. The Election Commission can do so. My problem is that even after they did not get anything after the search they did not give permission for the trial run. The Income Tax does not have the authority to do so. We will take it up legally,” Mr Banerjee said speaking at a press conference at Tamluk constituency on Monday.

The Trinamool Congress alleged on Sunday that officials of the Income Tax department raided the helicopter of the party’s general secretary, Abhishek Banerjee, at Behala Flying Club.

“Five days before elections, hordes of cash are recovered from the cars of BJP leaders in Jalpaiguri. What do Income Tax officials do? Raid Abhishek Banerjee’s chopper, while ECIremains a mute spectator. The irony is that all this comes on a day when PM Narendra Modiclaims to fight corruption,” Trinamool Congress posted on X.

TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee also targeted the Election Commission over the alleged incident and said that the poll body with the BJP decided to deploy ‘minions’ of the Income Tax department.

“Instead of removing the NIA DG and SP, ECI, and BJP chose to deploy MINIONS FROM IT to search and raid my chopper and security personnel today, resulting in NO FINDINGS. The ZAMINDARS can exert all there might but Bengal’s SPIRIT OF RESISTANCE will never waver,” he said.

However, sources denied any search taking place at the TMC leader’s helicopter adding that the “media reports in this regard are completely misleading.”

“No search/raid or survey or any enforcement action was undertaken by the Income Tax Department in respect of any helicopter/aircraft of TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee. Media reports in this regard are completely misleading,” the sources said.

The sources further said that Behala Flying Club does not have any frisking/security apparatus or scanner working and this was brought to the notice of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal on April 4 by the State Nodal Officer of the Income Tax Department.

During one such routine verification on the basis of ATC information at Behala Flying Club/Airstrip in Kolkata on April 14, the Quick Response Team (QRT) went to collect certain relevant information from the Aerodrome personnel, sources said.

Freedom-seeking nations hail Iran's Operation True Promise

Soon after the assault, Iran responded to the measure which was in the exercise of Iran’s inherent right to self-defense as outlined in Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations, and in response to the Israeli recurring military aggressions, particularly its armed attack on 1st April 2024 against Iranian diplomatic premises, in the defiance of Article 2 (4) of the Charter of the United Nations.

Iranian forces launched extensive strikes on the Israeli-occupied territories on April 13 in response to the Zionist regime’s terrorist attack on Iran’s diplomatic mission in the Syrian capital Damascus on April 1, which led to the martyrdom of seven Iranian military advisors.

Iran’s anti-Israel operation was conducted by Shahed 131/136 Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), Kheibar Shekan ballistic missiles, Emad ballistic missiles, and Paveh cruise missiles.

People across Iran were on the streets overnight on Sunday to show their support for the legitimate defense.

According to Al Mayadeen, the Zionist media admitted that Iran’s response on April 13 to the Israeli regime’s missile attack on the Iranian consulate in Syria was the most concentrated and coordinated attack using precision munitions (guided missiles) in the history of global security.

The Israeli newspaper “Haaretz” has admitted that the Israeli regime was defeated against Iran’s punitive act.

“We’ve lost. Truth must be told. The inability to admit it encapsulates everything you need to know about Israel’s individual and mass psychology,” Haaretz wrote on its X account on Sunday.

Lebanese group Hezbollah has praised Iran’s attack on Israel, describing it as a “brave” decision.

Hezbollah added in a statement that Iran had exercised its legal rights despite “threats, intimidation, and pressure”.

To celebrate the brave act and express support for Iran, people in various countries took to the streets.

Describing Iran’s attacks on the Israeli regime as ‘very smart’, Turkish politician Osman Faruk Logoglu believes that Iran said to Tel Aviv, “This is it for now.  If you (Israel) take another step against Iran, our response will be much heavier!”

From Covid Cure Claim To An Anonymous Letter: How Patanjali Case Unfolded

From Covid Cure Claim To An Anonymous Letter: How Patanjali Case Unfolded

Ramdev’s apology has been rejected and the court will pass an order on April 16

New Delhi:

“What about all the faceless people who have consumed these Patanjali medicines stated to cure diseases which cannot be cured?” These were the Supreme Court’s strong remarks in its brutal takedown of Uttarakhand authorities for inaction against Haridwar-based Patanjali Ayurved, founded by Yoga guru Ramdev and his aide Balkrishna.

The court’s remarks, which included a “post office” metaphor for state authorities and a “will rip you apart” warning, came as the bench of Justice Hima Kohli and Justice A Amanullah rejected apologies by Ramdev and Balkrishna and said it will pass an order on April 16. This comes after a nearly three-year fight of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) against misleading claims made by Ramdev and Patanjali.

Here’s a look at how the case unfolded:

The Beginning: Coronil’s Launch

In February 2021, just before the Covid’s Delta wave struck, Ramdev launched Patanjali’s Coronil, which he described as the “first evidence-based medicine for COVID-19”. The launch was attended by then Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan, also a doctor. The poster at the event claimed that Coronil holds a certificate of pharmaceutical product and is recognised by the WHO’s Good Manufacturing Practices. WHO, however, clarified that it had not reviewed or certified any traditional medicine to treat or prevent COVID-19.

IMA said it was shocked to note the “blatant lie” of WHO certification for a “secret medicine” launched in presence of the Health Minister. The country “needs an explanation” from the minister, it said.

Months later, a video of Ramdev was viral, in which he was heard saying that allopathy was a “stupid and bankrupt science” that is “responsible for the deaths of lakhs of people”. He said no modern medicine was curing Covid. The IMA responded by sending a legal notice to Ramdev and seeking an apology and withdrawal of statements. It put out a statement, appealing to then Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan to charge against the Yoga guru under the Epidemic Diseases Act. Under fire, Patanjali Yogpeeth responded that Ramdev was only reading out from a forwarded WhatsApp message and has no ill-will against modern science.

What Were Authorities Doing

According to a BBC report, Patanjali in December 2020 urged state authorities to change Coronil’s licence from an “immunity booster” to one for “medicine for Covid-19”. The next month, the company said the product got approval as a “supporting measure” against Covid.

The AYUSH Ministry and Uttarakhand state authorities had then confirmed to BBC that a new licence had been issued, but made clear that Coronil was “not a cure” for Covid. “The upgraded licence means it can be sold like zinc, vitamin C, multi-vitamins or any other supplemental medicines,” said Dr YS Rawat, then director of Uttarakhand traditional medicine department and state licensing authority. “It [Coronil] is not a cure,” he said.

The Centre has said in its reply to the Supreme Court that Patanjali had been told not to put out misleading advertisements till the matter is examined by the Ayush Ministry. It added that after a detailed interdisciplinary process, the State Licensing Authority was informed that Coronil tablet “may only be considered as supporting measure in Covid-19”. It also said the Centre has taken proactive steps with regard to false claims for Covid cure.

The Case

In August 2022, the IMA moved a petition against Patanjali after it published an advertisement in newspapers titled ‘Misconceptions Spread By Allopathy: Save Yourself And The Country From The Misconceptions Spread By Pharma And Medical Industry’. The ad claimed that Patanjali drugs had cured people of diabetes, high blood pressure, thyroid, liver cirrhosis, arthritis and asthma.

Also mentioning Ramdev’s earlier remarks on modern medicine, the doctors’ body said the “continuous, systematic, and unabated spread of misinformation” comes alongside Patanjali’s efforts to make false and unfounded claims about curing certain diseases through the use of Patanjali products.

As per law, the Drugs and Other Magical Remedies Act that regulates magic pill claims, lays down a jail term and fine for misleading advertisements.

On November 21, 2023, the Supreme Court warned Patanjali against claims that its products can completely cure ailments such as diabetes and high blood pressure and threatened to slap heavy fines.

Patanjali’s counsel, court documents say, had then assured that “henceforth, there shall not be any violation of any of the laws, especially relating to advertisement and branding of products”. He also assured the court that “no casual statements of claiming medicinal efficacy of any system of medicine will be released to the media in any form”.

What Has Happened Now

On January 15 this year, the Supreme Court received an anonymous letter addressed to Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud with copies marked to Justice Kohli and Justice Amanullah. The letter mentioned misleading advertisements Patanjali continued to put out. IMA’s counsel, Senior Advocate PS Patwalia, also showed the court newspaper advertisements after the November 21, 2023 warning and transcript of a press conference by Ramdev and Balkrishna right after the court’s hearing.

The court said, “Prima facie, this Court is of the opinion that the respondent no.5-Patanjali Ayurved Limited has violated the undertaking given by it and recorded in the order dated 21st November, 2023.”

It sought a reply from the company on why contempt proceedings should not be initiated. In strong remarks, the court said the “country is being taken for a ride” and said the government was “sitting with its eyes shut”.

In the next hearing, on March 19, the court was told that Patanjali had not filed the reply to the contempt notice. It then asked Ramdev and Balkrishna to appear in person. On March 21, Balkrishna, who is the managing director of Patanjali, issued an unqualified apology.

The Takedown

The court came down heavily on Ramdev and Balkrishna in its April 2 hearing for their “absolute defiance” over not filing proper affidavits over the misleading advertisements. The court observed that the ads are in the “teeth of law” and told them to be “ready for action”.

“You should have made sure that the solemn undertaking should have been in letter and spirit. We can also say that we are sorry for not accepting it. Your apology is not persuading this court. It is more of a lip service,” the Supreme Court said, rejecting their apology, and asked to file affidavits within a week.

This set of apologies was rejected yesterday after the Supreme Court after the court noted that they were sent to the media first. “Till the matter hit the court, the contemnors did not find it fit to send us the affidavits. They sent it to the media first, till 7.30 pm yesterday it was not uploaded for us. They believe in publicity clearly,” Justice Kohli said.

Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for the Patanjali founders, said he cannot speak for the registry and that the apologies had been served.

Justice Amanullah asked if the apology is “even heartfelt”. “Tendering apology is not enough. You should suffer the consequences for violating the court’s order. We do not want to be generous in this case,” he said.

Ramdev and Balkrishna will be in the Supreme Court today in the misleading ads case

New Delhi:

Yoga guru Ramdev and his aide Balkrishna will be in the Supreme Court today as it hears the contempt case against Patanjali Ayurved in connection with its misleading ads and Covid cure claims. The court had come down heavily on the Patanjali founders during the previous hearing last week. It had also pulled up the Uttarakhand government for not acting against the Haridwar-based company.

The court has rejected two sets of apologies by Ramdev and Balkrishna, noting that the letters were sent to the media first. “Till the matter hit the court, the contemnors did not find it fit to send us the affidavits. They believe in publicity clearly,” Justice Hima Kohli said last week.

NASA Confirms Object That Destroyed Florida Home Was Space Junk

The object caused some damage to the home’s roof and floor.

A strange event unfolded in Naples, Florida, last month. A cylindrical object came crashing through the roof of a home, leaving the homeowner shaken but fortunately unharmed.

The mystery was solved on Monday by NASA, which confirmed the object was a piece of space junk from the International Space Station (ISS). It was a metal support used to hold old batteries on a disposal pallet jettisoned from the station in 2021. While most of the pallet was expected to burn up in the atmosphere, this particular piece survived the fiery re-entry.

The object, weighing only 1.6 pounds and measuring about 4 inches tall, caused some damage to the home’s roof and floor. Homeowner Alejandro Otero, who was on vacation at the time, expressed his disbelief at the incident but was grateful no one was hurt.

“It was a tremendous sound. It almost hit my son. He was two rooms over and heard it all,” said Alejandro Otero.

Alejandro told WINK News he was on vacation when his son called.

“Something ripped through the house and then made a big hole on the floor and on the ceiling,” said Alejandro. “When we heard that, we were like, impossible, and then immediately I thought of a meteorite.”

Upon returning home sooner than expected from their journey, they discovered a cylindrical object, weighing close to two pounds, had punctured through the ceiling and ripped through the floor. Alejandro speculates it may have originated from outer space.

“It used to have a cylindrical shape, and you can tell by the shape of the top that it travelled in this direction through the atmosphere. Whatever you burned, created in this burn, and melted the metal over in this direction,” said Alejandro.

Wherever it came from, it scared the Otero family.

“I was shaking. I was completely in disbelief. What are the chances of something landing on my house with such force to cause so much damage?” Alejandro said. “I’m super grateful that nobody got hurt.”

Keanu Reeves to voice Shadow in ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’

Los Angeles: After breaking bones and stabbing people with just a pencil in the ‘John Wick’ franchise, Hollywood star Keanu Reeves has a new task waiting in the wings.

The actor will voice the character of Shadow in ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’. He joins a cast that includes Ben Schwartz as Sonic, as well as Jim Carrey as the villainous Dr Robotnik, reports Variety.

A spokesperson for Paramount Pictures, the studio behind the film, declined to comment.

Aa per Variety, in the games, Shadow, an anthropomorphic hedgehog (his fur is black, whilst Sonic’s is blue), is an antihero of sorts. He’s also often an antagonist to Sonic.

Keanu’s credits include ‘Speed’, ‘Bram Stoker’s Dracula’ and ‘My Own Private Idaho’, as well as the ‘Matrix’ franchise. He will next appear in the ‘John Wick’ spinoff, ‘Ballerina’, opposite Ana de Armas.

Reeves is also set to co-star in ‘Good Fortune’ alongside Aziz Ansari, Seth Rogen, Keke Palmer and Sandra Oh.

Jeff Fowler, who oversaw the first two ‘Sonic’ movies, is returning as the director of the latest sequel. Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher, Toru Nakahara and Hitoshi Okuno will produce ‘Sonic 3’, which will open in theatres on December 20, 2024.

Reeves’ casting in ‘Sonic 3’ was first reported on ‘The John Campea Show’.

The franchise is one of Paramount’s most successful, with the combined global box office for ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ and ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’ standing at $725.2 million. The studio is also making a spin-off series, ‘Knuckles’, that will premiere on Paramount+.

Legitimate self-defense, punishing Israel only option

Amir-Abdollahian made the remarks in a telephone conversation with the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday night.

Although the Islamic Republic of Iran was able to carry out the anti-Israeli operation in a wider scope, it only targeted that part of the military positions of the Zionist regime from where they attacked Iran’s consulate in Damascus, the top Iranian diplomat underlined.

The security of the region is very important to Iran, but the Zionist regime has been carrying out massacre and genocide against defenseless children and women in Gaza for six months, and America and its allies will not stop it, Amir-Abdollahian emphasized.

“When will the international community act to end this genocide and crimes?” he asked.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the Iranian foreign minister said that Tehran welcomes the initiative of the Secretary General of the United Nations in achieving sustainable security in the region.

Guterres, for his part, called for continued restraint from the parties involved in regional conflicts.

Yesterday, I once again condemned any attack on diplomatic places and stressed that diplomatic places should be protected, he added.

We advise Tel Aviv to refrain from committing fresh aggression against the Islamic Republic, Guterres stressed, expressing delight for Iran’s current decision on not taking additional measures against the occupying regime if the Zionists do not commit any fresh aggression against it.

In response to the Israeli terrorist attack on Iran’s consulate building in Syria on April 1, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps attacked targets in occupied Palestine with dozens of drones and missiles early on Sunday.

The Israeli regime attacked Iran’s consulate in the Syrian capital of Damascus on April 1. The Israeli aggression led to the destruction of the entire building and the martyrdom and injury of the entire people inside it.

Seven of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) military advisors were martyred following the Israeli attack on Iran’s consulate in Damascus.
