Two Palestinians killed in West Bank amid drastic rise in settler attacks

Israeli settlers have killed two Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, according to Palestinian officials and witnesses, after a weekend of escalating violence across the territory.

The official Palestinian news agency WAFA, citing the Palestinian Health Ministry, identified the victims of the Monday attack near the northern West Bank village of Aqrabah, located eighteen kilometers (11.18 miles) southeast of Nablus, as Abdulrahman Maher Bani Fadel, 30, and Mohammed Ashraf Bani Jame, 21.

Salah Bani Jaber, mayor of Aqrabah, who witnessed the settler attack, said that about 50 settlers, many of them armed, attacked members of his community.

They “assaulted residents and fired at people in the town leading to the death of two citizens,” the mayor said, adding that “the occupation army is still holding the bodies.”

“There were Israeli soldiers at the scene who stood idly by watching the settlers,” he told the Reuters news agency.

The Palestine Red Crescent Society said Israeli soldiers blocked its ambulances from reaching the area and tending to the wounded.

The Israeli military asserted in a statement that it was looking into the incident.

Palestinians living in the occupied West Bank are under constant threat as armed Israeli settlers continue to launch violent attacks on them, their families, and their homes in acts of vengeance.

Palestinian Ministry of Health officials reported on Monday that four Palestinians had been killed in Israeli settler attacks since Friday.

The recent settler attacks are part of a broader wave of violence which has heightened since Israel’s devastating war on Gaza. The war has killed at least 33,797 people in Gaza, mostly women and children, and wounded another 76,465 individuals, according to the health ministry in the territory.

Armed settlers and the Israeli army have killed 460 Palestinians and injured 4,800 others in the occupied West Bank since October 7.

On April 13, Israeli settlers spearheaded a large-scale attack on the village of al-Mughayyir, where they killed one Palestinian man and injured 25 others.

Since then, settlers have attacked more towns and villages near Ramallah, including Bukra, Dayr Dibwan and Kfar Malik.

Settler violence against Palestinians and their property is routine in the West Bank, and is rarely prosecuted by Israeli authorities.

The aggression includes property and mosque arsons, stone-throwing, uprooting of crops and olive trees, and attacks on vulnerable families, among others.

Over 700,000 extremist Israeli settlers are living in illegal settlements across occupied East al-Quds and the West Bank in violation of international law.

Iran FM stresses WHO to help Gaza with medical aid

Amir-Abdollahian met and held talks with Hanan Balkhy, the WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean on Monday.

The top Iranian diplomat said that the crimes and genocide of the Zionist regime in Gaza are not limited to bombing and many Palestinians, especially children and women, are dying due to hunger, disease, and lack of medicine.

While thanking Balkhy for her special attention and efforts in the direction of developing cooperation among major regional countries, especially Iran, with the World Health Organization, Amir-Abdollahian emphasized his country’s readiness to strengthen cooperation and interaction with the World Health Organization in bilateral and regional dimensions.

For her part, Balkhy expressed her satisfaction with her trip to Iran, emphasizing the efforts of the WHO in cooperation with international partners to send humanitarian aid to Gaza but said these efforts have not been fruitful so far due to the Zionist regime’s crimes in the enclave.

She expressed hope that with the cessation of Israeli violence and war in Gaza, the opportunity to provide humanitarian aid and healthcare will be possible.

Iranian Greco-Roman wrestlers win two golds at Asian C'ships

Mirzazadeh showed once again how unstoppable he is from par terre, as he rolled Minseok Kim (KOR) two times for all the points he needed in a 5-0 victory in the 130kg final.

“I really practiced hard for this and tried a lot to be able to create a significant difference with the other competitors and it makes me happy,” Mirzazadeh said.

It was the first time in three matches that the Iranian didn’t end it with enough gut wrenches from par terre, but it still got the job done.

Mirzazadeh had beaten Kim previously in the first round of the Tokyo Olympics, where he ended up taking a disappointing fifth by losing to the legendary Riza Kayaalp (TUR) in the bronze-medal match.

Mirzazadeh lost to Kayaalp again in the final of the 2022 worlds, but gained his revenge and his first world title in the gold-medal match last September in Belgrade. That makes him a leading candidate to end the hopes of Mijain Lopez (CUB) for an unprecedented fifth Olympic gold in Paris.

“I think it was a really great start for further preparation for the Olympics,” Mirzazadeh said. “From tomorrow, when the competition ends, I have to start training and trying to make my people happy with the title in the Olympics.”

At 87kg, Alizadeh maintained his dominance of Nursultan Tursynov (KAZ), beating him at the Asian Championships for the fourth year in a row and in a second consecutive final.

Alizadeh was never really challenged and clinched a 5-0 victory with a 2-point throw from par terre at the edge in the second period.

Alizadeh had beaten Tursynov in the first round in both 2021 and 2022 before defeating him 8-0 in last year’s final in Astana. The 33-year-old Tursynov does have an Asian gold medal, won back in 2014.

Ramdev, Aide Offer Public Apology In Supreme Court In Misleading Ads Case

'You Are Not So Innocent...': Supreme Court To Ramdev In Patanjali Ads Case

Ramdev and Balkrishna will be in the Supreme Court today in the misleading ads case

New Delhi:

Yoga guru Ramdev and his aide Balkrishna are in the Supreme Court today as it hears the contempt case against Patanjali Ayurved in connection with its misleading ads and Covid cure claims. The court had come down heavily on the Patanjali founders during the previous hearing last week. It had also pulled up the Uttarakhand government for not acting against the Haridwar-based company.

This morning, the bench of Justice Hima Kohli and Justice A Amanullah called the Patanjali founders forward and told them they have made significant contribution to yoga. “We respect what you have done for yoga,” the bench said. The two have said they are ready to offer a public apology. Ramdev said it was never his intention to bring down the prestige of the Supreme Court.

The court pointed to their “attitude” and questioned why they shot down other systems of medicine to stress the benefits of Ayurveda. Justice Amanullah said that the “law is the same for everybody”. Ramdev replied that he would be careful in the future.

The court said it will consider the matter in the light of all the earlier developments. “We have not decided whether to forgive you or not. You have violated (directives) thrice. The earlier orders are under our consideration. You are not so innocent that you did not know what’s happening in court,” the court said, adding that the next hearing will be held on April 23. Ramdev and Balkrishna have been asked to appear in the court again and take steps to demonstrate their intent.

Speaking to the media outside the court, Ramdev said, “I have said what I had to. I have full faith in the judiciary.”

The court has earlier rejected two sets of apologies by Ramdev and Balkrishna, noting that the letters were sent to the media first. “Till the matter hit the court, the contemnors did not find it fit to send us the affidavits. They believe in publicity clearly,” Justice Hima Kohli said last week.

Justice A Amanullah, also on the bench, asked if the apology is “even heartfelt”. “Tendering apology is not enough. You should suffer the consequences for violating the court’s order,” he said.

The matter dates back to the Covid years, when Patanjali launched a drug, Coronil, in 2021 and Ramdev described it as the “first evidence-based medicine for COVID-19”. The Indian Medical Association spoke out against the “blatant lie” that Coronil had WHO certification.

Subsequently, a video of Ramdev, in which he was heard saying that allopathy was a “stupid and bankrupt science”, went viral. He said no modern medicine was curing Covid. The IMA sent a legal notice to Ramdev and sought an apology and withdrawal of statements. Patanjali Yogpeeth responded that Ramdev was reading out from a forwarded WhatsApp message and has no ill-will against modern science.

In August 2022, IMA moved a petition against Patanjali after it published an advertisement in newspapers titled ‘Misconceptions Spread By Allopathy: Save Yourself And The Country From The Misconceptions Spread By Pharma And Medical Industry’. The ad claimed that Patanjali drugs had cured people of diabetes, high blood pressure, thyroid, liver cirrhosis, arthritis and asthma.

The doctors’ body said the “continuous, systematic, and unabated spread of misinformation” comes alongside Patanjali’s efforts to make false claims about curing certain diseases through use of Patanjali products.

On November 21, 2023, the Supreme Court warned Patanjali against claims that its products can completely cure ailments such as diabetes and high blood pressure and threatened to slap heavy fines.

Patanjali’s counsel, court documents say, then assured that “henceforth, there shall not be any violation of any of the laws, especially relating to advertisement and branding of products”.

On January 15 this year, the Supreme Court received an anonymous letter addressed to Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud with copies marked to Justice Kohli and Justice Amanullah. The letter mentioned misleading advertisements Patanjali continued to put out. IMA’s counsel, Senior Advocate PS Patwalia, also showed the court newspaper advertisements after the November 21, 2023 warning and transcript of a press conference by Ramdev and Balkrishna right after the court’s hearing.

It sought a reply from the company on why contempt proceedings should not be initiated. In strong remarks, the court said the “country is being taken for a ride” and that the government was “sitting with its eyes shut”.

On March 19, the court was told that Patanjali had not filed the reply to the contempt notice. It then asked Ramdev and Balkrishna to appear in person. The court came down heavily on Ramdev and Balkrishna in its April 2 hearing for their “absolute defiance” over not filing proper affidavits over the misleading advertisements. The court told them to be “ready for action”.

“Your apology is not persuading this court. It is more of a lip service,” the Supreme Court said, rejecting their apology, and asked them to file affidavits within a week.

This set of apologies was rejected on April 10 after the Supreme Court after the court noted that they were sent to the media first.

Austria stresses need for diplomatic efforts to end Gaza war

Noting that Iran has never been seeking to escalate tensions in the region, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-abdollahian has said that the Zionist regime has seemingly misinterpreted Iran’s restraint.

The foreign minister made the remarks in a phone conversation on Monday with his Austrian counterpart Alexander Schallenberg.

He described Iran’s Saturday night strikes on Zionist targets as the country’s legitimate right to self-defense.

The Austrian foreign minister, for his part, said that more regional conflicts will be detrimental to everyone, underlining the need for diplomatic efforts to put an end to the crisis in Gaza Strip.

The reason for the suspected suicide is yet to be ascertained. This is the second suicide reported in the university in a gap of two months.

"Rust" Armourer Jailed For Fatal Shooting By Alec Baldwin On Set

'Rust' Armourer Jailed For Fatal Shooting By Alec Baldwin On Set

Baldwin, who was also a producer, faces his own involuntary manslaughter trial.

Los Angeles:

The armourer who loaded the gun that killed a cinematographer on the set of the Alec Baldwin movie “Rust” was sentenced to 18 months in prison by a US court on Monday. Hannah Gutierrez stood impassive as a judge in New Mexico told her she was not remorseful for the October 2021 death of Halyna Hutchins during the filming of the budget Western.

“You were the armourer, the one that stood between a safe weapon and a weapon that could kill someone. You alone turned a safe weapon into a lethal weapon,” Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer said.

“But for you, Miss Hutchins would be alive. A husband would have his partner and a little boy would have his mother.”

Gutierrez’s 10-day trial for involuntary manslaughter had heard how despite being the person charged with handling on-set firearms, the 26-year-old had repeatedly failed to follow basic safety rules, leaving guns unattended and allowing actors — including Baldwin — to wave weapons around.

It also heard how she was responsible for the presence of six live rounds — a movie industry red line — and how she had loaded one of them into the Colt .45 that Baldwin was using.

The weapon discharged as the actor was preparing a scene inside a wooden church, killing Hutchins and wounding director Joel Souza.

“Halyna Hutchins died due to a cascade of safety violations that began with Miss Gutierrez introducing live rounds to the movie set, loading one into a prop gun telling the members of the crew that it was a cold gun,” prosecutor Kari Morrissey told the sentencing hearing in Santa Fe.

“That conduct absent responsibility or remorse is deserving of a sentence of 18 months.”

‘Not sorry’

Morrissey told the judge that since her conviction, Gutierrez had made around 200 calls from jail in which she complained that she was being unfairly victimized.

“Rather than accept responsibility, she has chosen to place blame on the witnesses who testified against her, me, you, the jurors, the set medic and the paramedics who tried to save Miss Hutchins’ life,” Morrissey said.

“Her jail calls… tell us who Miss Gutierrez really is.”

Gutierrez sobbed as she begged the court for probation, rather than jail time, but still insisted she was not wholly to blame.

“Your Honor, when I took on ‘Rust,’ I was young and I was naive. But I took my job as seriously as I knew how to, despite not having proper time, resources and staffing.

“The jury has found me in part at fault for this god-awful tragedy. But that doesn’t make me a monster. That makes me human,” she said.

The judge dismissed the plea.

“I did not hear you take accountability in your allocution,” Sommers said.

“You said you were sorry… but not… for what you did.

“It was your attorney that had to tell the court that you were remorseful. The word ‘remorse’: a deep regret coming from a sense of guilt for past wrongs; That’s not you.”

The movie’s star Baldwin, who was also a producer, faces his own involuntary manslaughter trial in July. He denies the charge.

If convicted, he too faces a possible 18 months in prison.

Dave Halls, the film’s safety coordinator and assistant director, who handed Baldwin the loaded gun, agreed to a plea deal with prosecutors last year and was sentenced to six months’ probation.

The tragedy sent shock waves through Hollywood and led to calls for a complete ban on the use of weapons on movie sets.

Industry insiders, however, insisted that rules were already in place to prevent such incidents, and that those working on “Rust” had not followed them.

The filming of “Rust” was halted by Hutchins’ death, but completed last year on location in Montana.

The cinematographer’s widower, Matthew Hutchins, who has already settled a wrongful death suit with “Rust” producers, served as an executive producer.

No release date has been announced.
