Iran renews gas export contract with Iraq: Oil Ministry

Iran and Iraq have renewed a contract for supply of natural gas from Iran to the Arab country’s power stations, according to the Iranian Oil Ministry.

Oil Ministry’s press service Shana said on Wednesday that the five-year extension on the gas supply deal between Iran and Iraq was signed earlier in the day in the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

The deal was signed between Majid Chegeni, who serves as the CEO of the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) and Iraq’s Minister of Electricity Ziyad Ali Fadel, the report said.

Iran has been supplying natural gas to Iraq for the past 10 years under an agreement signed in July 2013.

The supply increased to nearly 50 million cubic meters (mcm) per day in recent months after Iraq settled part of the debts it owed to the NIGC.

Iraq relies on the supply of gas and electricity from Iran for nearly a quarter of its power generation. The country has secured rounds of waivers from US sanctions on Iran to be able to import gas from its eastern neighbor.

Iran’s official IRNA news agency said in a report citing the Oil Ministry that the gas supply contract signed with Iraq provides various payment options for the Arab country. It did not elaborate.

Reports published last year suggested that Iraq had agreed to use its crude oil shipments to pay for the gas imported from Iran.

Those reports came at a time when the NIGC had reduced the flow of gas exports to Iraq to below 10 mcm per day because of arrears, causing long hours of power cuts in major Iraqi cities.

Take adequate precautions to avoid heat stroke

Hyderabad: As the city starts to grapple with the rise in temperatures, the district health authorities in Hyderabad and neighbouring Medchal-Malkajgiri and Rangareddy districts have urged people to take utmost precautions from heat strokes, which are bound to surge in the coming weeks.

With temperatures consistently starting to touch 40 degrees Celsius, the risk of heat-related illnesses is significantly heightened.

Heat stroke occurs when the body’s temperature regulation system fails, leading to a rapid rise in core body temperature. Symptoms include dizziness, nausea, confusion, and, in severe cases, seizures and coma.

While food- and water-related infections are largely due to consumption of contaminated food and water, heat-related illnesses (HRI) encompasses a spectrum of disorders including muscle cramps, heat exhaustion and life-threatening emergency such as a heat stroke.

These illnesses arise when there is a disruption in regulating the body’s temperature because heat input from the environment and body metabolism is increased compared with output from the skin via radiation, evaporation, and convection.

Persons with such pre-existing medical conditions should ensure that they are not exposed to extreme heat during peak summer.

Doctors said that core body temperatures of senior citizens, diabetics, kidney and heart patients rises considerably when exposed to hot sun for a long time.

SRH's 277/3 Is Not The Highest In T20 Format – A Look At Top Team Totals

Records tumbled left-right and centre as Sunrisers Hyderabad smashed 277 for three, the highest total in IPL history, to leave Mumbai Indians shell shocked on Wednesday. Travis Head (62 off 24) and Abhishek Sharma (63 off 23) came up with a sensational display of power-hitting, that saw the latter snatching the franchise record for fastest fifty from the Australian within minutes. Heinrich Klaasen (80 not out off 34 balls) provided the fireworks in the end to help SRH break an 11-year-old record. The previous highest total in IPL was 263 for five achieved by Royal Challengers Bangalore back in 2013.

It was raining fours and sixes throughout the innings as Head and Sharma toyed with the Mumbai Indians attack.

Head, who was surprisingly left out of the playing eleven for the opening game, reinforced his status as one of the most dangerous batters in the game with a whirlwind effort.

He broke David Warner‘s record of the fastest fifty by a SRH batter with a 18-ball half-century before Sharma surpassed Head’s feat 20 balls later by reaching the milestone in 16 balls.

Head, who was dropped by compatriot Tim David at the start of his innings, opened his front leg and hit boundaries at will, collecting nine fours and three sixes in total.

The southpaw completed his fifty with an inside out four wide of mid-off before dispatching a bouncer from Gerald Coetzee for a six over deep midwicket, prompting opposition skipper Hardik Pandya to acknowledge the Australian’s brutal assault.

When Head departed, Sharma went hammer and tongs, mostly targeting the cow corner region for his seven sixes and three boundaries.

It was a nightmarish start to the IPL for the 17-year-old South Africa pacer Kwena Maphaka, who made the Mumbai Indians squad at the back of his exploits in the U-19 World Cup.

He leaked as many as 66 runs in his four overs. The left-arm pacer could not recover from Head’s onslaught in his second over in which he conceded 22 runs.

With the majority of the Mumbai bowlers taken to the cleaners, it was surprising that Mumbai Indians skipper Pandya waited till the 13th over to give Jasprit Bumrah his second over.

Following Sharma’s dismissal, the in-form Klaasen ensured there was no stopping to the SRH’s six hitting spree. Klaasen ended up with seven sixes with the maximum off a Bumrah bouncer standing out.

Klaasen had almost taken SRH over the line with his breathtaking knock against KKR at the Eden Gardens.

Former skipper Aiden Markram chipped in 42 off 28 balls.

However, SunRisers Hyderabad’s 277/3 is not the highest score in the shortest format.

Highest team totals in the format (T20I and T20 combined)
1. Nepal 314/3 vs Mongolia, 2023
2. Afghanistan 278/3 vs Ireland, 2019
3. Czech Rep. 278/4 vs Turkey, 2019
4. SunRisers Hyderabad 277/3 vs Mumbai Indians, 2024
5. Punjab 275/6 vs Andhra, 2023

Telangana braces for a long summer, temperature in city and rural areas touch 40 degrees Celsius

Hyderabad: People in Hyderabad are getting an early taste of what looks like a long summer with mercury starting to consistently touch 40 degrees Celsius.

With the month of March almost coming to an end, it is time to brace for the typical dry heat of  derabad in the months of April and May when day-time temperatures will consistently cross the 40-degree Celsius mark.

On Wednesday, the maximum daytime temperature in Hyderabad was 40.5 degrees C, which was recorded at Adarsh Nagar, Medchal-Malkajgiri district.

The Khairatabad region recorded a maximum of 40.4 degrees Celsius while city outskirts like Moinabad in Rangareddy district a maximum of 40.9 degrees Celsius.

Mercury, however, hovered between 38 degrees Celsius and 38.9 degrees Celsius in the rest of the regions of the city. On its part, the India Meteorological Department (IMD)-Hyderabad, in a forecast, said that the morning time maximum temperatures will consistently rise by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius in the coming five days.

In the next seven days, severe heat will grip the rural parts of Telangana with maximum temperature likely to hover around 43 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, the urban centres of Telangana like Hyderabad, and Warangal, the maximum day time temperatures will hover between 41 degrees Celsius and 42 degrees Celsius, according to Telangana State Development Planning Society (TSDPS).

The rural parts of Telangana have already started experiencing intense heat with temperatures rising consistently and hovering at around 42 degrees Celsius and 41 degrees Celsius.

Some of the regions in districts that bore the brunt of the intense heat include Nizam abad, Adilabad, Nalgonda, Kumaram Bheem, Rangareddy and Wanaparthy where temperatures remained between 41 degrees Celsius and 42 degrees Celsius.

Gaza children go to sleep hungry, they are being ‘wasted’: WFP

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has warned that famine is imminent in the northern Gaza Strip.

Israel continues to hinder aid deliveries to the region.

The WFP’s Palestine Country Director Matthew Hollingworth said in a video filmed in Gaza on Tuesday that children were going to sleep hungry and exhausted.

Malnutrition among children is proceeding at a record pace, and one in three children below the age of two is now acutely malnourished or “wasted.”

“There is nowhere else in the world where so many people face imminent famine. Here in Gaza City, we’re at the epicenter of the crisis, here in the Gaza strip. Today I’ve met so many people who are angry and tired and despairing because their children go to sleep every night hungry,” Hollingworth said.

The WFP has only managed to send 11 convoys with food to the north since the start of the year, he said.

The WFP official said food aid needed to flow massively into the besieged Palestinian territory immediately “if we’re going to prevent famine, prevent further death, prevent wasting amongst children, prevent really the desperate situation that is already in place.”

Some 70 percent of the population in northern Gaza is facing catastrophic hunger, he said.

Across the whole Gaza Strip, the number of people facing catastrophic hunger has risen to 1.1 million, half the population, according to Hollingworth.

A recent UN-backed report said famine was “likely to occur by May” in the northern Gaza Strip, where some 300,000 people face constant attacks by Israeli forces.

Russian Attacks Kill 3 In Ukraine As Kyiv Calls For More Air Defences

Russian Attacks Kill 3 In Ukraine As Kyiv Calls For More Air Defences

Ukraine has been forced onto the defensive in the past few months (File)

Kyiv, Ukraine:

Russian attacks on eastern and southern Ukraine killed at least three people on Wednesday, officials said, as Kyiv called for more Patriot air defence systems to battle a surge in missile strikes.

Moscow has escalated aerial attacks on Ukraine in the past few weeks, targeting key infrastructure — including power stations — in retaliation for fatal bombardments of Russia’s border regions.

In Ukraine’s second largest city of Kharkiv, which has been reeling from power outages due to the strikes, officials said shelling killed at least one person and injured 16 others.

“Four children are among the wounded. Apartment buildings were damaged. The number of victims may increase,” the region’s governor Oleg Sinegubov said.

The governor of Ukraine’s southern Kherson region, which is partially occupied by Russia, said one woman had been killed in a drone attack on the village of Mykhailivka.

“A 61-year-old local resident was fatally wounded in her own home,” the official, Oleksandr Prokudin, wrote on social media.

And in the southeastern city of Nikopol, officials said artillery fire killed a 55-year-old man, while a ballistic missile strike on the coastal territory of Mykolaiv left eight wounded.

The Ukrainian air force said Russia had launched 13 Iranian-designed attack drones overnight and that 10 were downed over the Kharkiv region, the neighbouring Sumy region and near the capital Kyiv.

‘Little time’

During an online briefing on Wednesday, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba called again for urgent deliveries of air defence systems he said were crucial in warding off the increase in attacks.

“The peculiarity of the current Russian attacks is the intensive use of ballistic missiles that can reach targets at extremely high speeds, leaving little time for people to take cover and causing significant destruction,” Kuleba said.

“Patriot and other similar systems are defensive by definition. They are designed to protect lives, not take them,” he said.

Ukraine has been forced onto the defensive in the past few months as it struggles with ammunition shortages and delays to a $60 billion aid package from Washington.

It has also been forced to concede ground to Russia on the eastern front, warning earlier this week of “difficult” battles around the eastern city of Chasіv Yar.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was in the Sumy region on Wednesday, where he met with soldiers recovering from their injuries.

The army’s ground forces commander warned last week that Russia was building a group of over 100,000 soldiers in advance of what may be a major offensive this summer.

Russia meanwhile announced that its air defence systems had shot down 18 rockets near the border city of Belgorod, which has recently seen an increase in fatal Ukrainian attacks.

The governor of Russia’s Belgorod region, Vyacheslav Gladkov, said two people were wounded during the barrage and later drone attack.

Hyderabad faces traffic confusion over free left turns at junctions

Hyderabad faces traffic confusion over free left turns at junctions

Hyderabad: If some block the free left and cause inconvenience, there are a few who take the left when the signal is red, causing a nuisance.

The public indifference to this unfamiliar traffic rule along with the absence of signage has resulted in motorists taking a left turn, where they are not supposed to.

Intended to expedite left turns during designated periods like peak traffic, the initiative, however, has ended up creating a lot of confusion and has become ineffective.

While some see this as a solution, many point out that the free-left initiative is a problem. “When the signal is completely red, then there is no free left and all the traffic has to stop.

Not all left turns are free lefts. It should be provided only at wider roads with proper islands at intersections which have a dedicated left lane before 300m at least while approaching the junction,” says Lokendra Singh, city-based road safety expert, adding that free lefts at nar- row roads must be eliminated.

Apart from the free left issue, when there is a red signal where the majority of the traffic would be taking a right, scores of motorists take the liberty of driving straight ahead, causing a conflict with the traffic coming from the other side.

Lokendra says that free lefts and free straights are nowhere mentioned in the Motor Vehicles Act and that it was created for commuters’ convenience.

“The reality is the traffic taking a left turn at junctions is adding congestion to the next intersection, resulting in increased waiting times. If lane discipline is followed we don’t have to do this. Also, all the free left turns have dedicated space in a curve shape which contin- ues from demerging road to merging road, decreasing the width of the road for traffic from the right direction.”

There are also a few junctions in the city where this provision is given although there is not enough space to accommodate the traffic.

Tank Bund road entrance from Telangana Martyrs’ Memorial side road, Ravin- dra Bharati Circle (Assem- bly to Lakdikapul), LB Stadium (Near Nizam College), and Nanal Nagar junction are a few examples. In some other locations, there are no signboards indicating that taking a left or going straight is prohibited.
