Patanjali advertising case: SC asks Ramdev, Balkrishna to appear before it

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday sought personal appearance of Yoga guru Ramdev and Patanjali Ayurved Managing Director Acharya Balkrishna before it in the contempt proceedings relating to advertising of the company’s products and their medicinal efficacy.

A bench of justices Hima Kohli and Ahsanuddin Amanullah took strong exception to the failure of the company and Balkrishna in filing replies to the court’s notices issued to them earlier to show why contempt proceedings be not initiated against them for prima facie violating the undertaking given to the court.

The bench also issued notice to Ramdev to show cause why contempt proceedings be not initiated against him.

The apex court was hearing a plea of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) alleging a smear campaign by Ramdev against the vaccination drive and modern medicines.

BJP Welcoming Tainted Leaders? "Doors Open For All," Says Finance Minister

BJP Welcoming Tainted Leaders? 'Doors Open For All,' Says Nirmala Sitharaman

Nirmala Sitharaman dismissed allegations of connections between the ED raids and bond purchases (File)

New Delhi:

All major political parties encashed electoral bonds and nobody has a moral authority to say anything as it was legal and according to law, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said.

She also said that given the Supreme Court’s judgment against electoral bonds, more debate is needed to find a better system for electoral funding.

The minister said the law, now scrapped by the top court, was passed by parliament and the bonds were purchased as per the prevailing law of the time.

“It was passed by parliament and based on the law, bonds were bought and encashed by all parties but one… Everyone has received from everybody. Every donor has given to everybody.

“The very party which now says this is a scam, this is a scandal, had also taken money through the bonds. Tell me what moral authority anyone has to speak because it was the law then… it went lawfully. It was a step better than what prevailed earlier,” Ms Sitharaman said.

On what the new government can do in this regard, she said there is a need to understand how to better the system, which has now been rejected.

The system of electoral bonds was still better than the previous system, “which is what we’ve gone back to now. We need to do something better, but a lot more work is required”, she added.

Last month, a five-judge Supreme Court bench, headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, said the electoral bonds scheme violates the right to information and the freedom of speech and expression under the Constitution.

She also dismissed the allegations of connections between the Enforcement Directorate’s raids and bond purchases, stating that even companies that donated to the BJP through electoral bonds were raided.

“ED raids still happened. It did not give them (companies) any immunity,” she added.

The minister added that the law enforcement agencies are not acting with any political agenda as the law pursues those who disobey it.

“Stop making political arguments over them,” Ms Sitharaman said.

Asked why the BJP is welcoming tainted politicians, she said the “doors are open for all”.

“If people see work happening… and a party is making a difference, they obviously would want to come and join. But the BJP has value systems and the way in which the party runs under certain leadership. I don’t think there is ever a compromise on that,” she said.

Replying to a question on Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate’s remarks against BJP Lok Sabha candidate Kangana Ranaut, she said it is “outrageous” and “abhorrent”.

Ms Shrinate should have tendered an unconditional apology, she added.

A controversial comment was posted on social media platforms from Congress leader Shrinate’s accounts about Kangana Ranaut, the actor fielded by the BJP from Mandi in Himachal Pradesh.

Following a row, Ms Shrinate removed the post and said that it was not posted by her but by someone who had access to her accounts.

The Finance Minister refused to call the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal a case of political vendetta.

The Delhi Chief Minister had not complied with several ED summonses, she said, adding that governance has gone down the drain in Delhi and Punjab – the two states where the AAP is in power.

TDP calls for action against YSRCP over freebie seizure

TDP calls for action against YSRCP over freebie seizure

Tirupati: The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) has urged the Election Commission of India to take action over a huge dump of freebies allegedly meant for distribution among voters by the ruling YSR Congress Party.

Goods like wrist watches, dummy EVMs, umbrellas, grinders, cookers, speakers, cell phone covers, carrying pictures of Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy and YSRCP’s poll symbol were found in a warehouse in Srikalahasti Assembly constituency.

The TDP said its cadres uncovered a large quantity of materials belonging to the YSRCP, which were procured and stockpiled to unlawfully influence voters in favour of the ruling party.

It claimed that after a protest by its leaders for eight hours, the Election Commission officials inspected the old FCI warehouse.

In his complaint to the Chief Election Commissioner, TDP general secretary and polit bureau member Varla Ramaiah sought action against district Collector, District Superintendent of Police, and the local Returning Officer for alleged dereliction of duties.

He also demanded against YSRCP‘s contesting candidates and leaders for their attempts to induce voters.

Bojjala Sudhir Reddy, TDP candidate from Srikalahasti Assembly constituency, claimed that there are three more warehouses with sealed material.

“We believe that these materials may contain cash. We demand that the boxes should be opened by the Election Commission officials in front of us. We have informed the Revenue Division Office, but there has been no response from them,” he said.

Meanwhile, TDP general secretary Nara Lokesh has said that Jagan Mohan Reddy’s defeat is certain even if he is to give one kilogram of gold to every house.

He said that since the YSRCP leaders have already come to a decision that it is not possible to win the polls, they are making attempts to lure the electorate by offering some gifts.

"Ordinary Bowling": Bhogle On Pandya-led MI Conceding 148 In 10 Overs

The start of their IPL 2024 game against SunRisers Hyderabd, was nothing less than a horror show for the Hardik Pandya-led Mumbai Indians. The SRH batters took the MI bowlers to cleaners as they notched in 148/2 in 10 overs. Travis Head slammed a 18-ball half-century while Abhishek Sharma slammed a fifty in 16 balls. No other SRH batter scored a fifty in IPL in less than 20 balls before this match. Against MI, SRH scored 81 – the highest in their IPL history.

Famous cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle summed up the situation quit aptly.

“Wow, incredible hitting and now, some ordinary bowling as the outcome of the boundary barrage. I don’t think anyone saw this coming. #MI getting dismantled and there is only one Bumrah,” Harsha Bhogle posted on X.

“Every boundary from Head, and there have been many, will bring back into focus the importance of taking catches. He is some player! You can only bat the way Head is, if you are completely fearless.”

Earlier, Hardik Pandya-led Mumbai Indians (MI) won the toss and decided to bowl first against Pat Cummins‘ Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Wednesday in the Indian Premier League (IPL) at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.

Both Hyderabad and Mumbai are coming into this match after losing their previous encounters. SRH conceded a four-run loss against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). On the other hand, Mumbai suffered a 6-run defeat against the Gujarat Titans (GT) in their first match of the tournament.

Speaking at the toss, Hardik confirmed that Luke Wood would miss the match against Hyderabad.

“We are going to bowl first. Looks like a good track, we were solid in the last game. Didn’t plan properly, that cost us the game. 13 games to go, we need to keep doing the right things. We are positive and looking forward to the challenge. Just trying to spend time with all the players. Getting to know them better. One change, Luke misses out,” Pandya said.

On the other hand, Cummins said that Jaydev Unadkat will replace T Natarajan. He added that Travis Head will start for Hyderabad for Marco Jansen.

“Looks like a good wicket. Not too upset. It’s a tough tournament, the crowd and conditions will help. A couple of changes. Head comes in for Jansen. Natarajan has a niggle, Unadkat comes in. We got a great squad, the players playing tonight got to give their everything,” Cummins said.

Mumbai Indians playing XI: Ishan Kishan (Wk), Rohit Sharma, Naman Dhir, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya (C), Tim David, Gerald Coetzee, Shams Mulani, Piyush Chawla, Jasprit Bumrah, Kwena Maphaka.

Nearly 100 Still Missing After Moscow Attack: Report

More than 500 rounds were found at the scene by terrorists.

Moscow:

As many as 95 people are still missing after last week’s attack near Moscow when gunmen sprayed concertgoers with automatic weapons and set the venue on fire, a Russian news outlet reported on Wednesday.

The official toll from the attack on Crocus City Hall now stands at 140 dead and 182 wounded. But the Baza news service, which has good contacts in Russian security and law enforcement, said 95 more people appeared in lists compiled by the emergency services based on appeals from people about missing relatives.

“These lists include people with whom relatives have not been able to get in touch since the terrorist attack, but who are not on the lists of wounded and dead,” Baza said. “Some of these people died, but have not yet been identified.”

Russian investigators said the attack was carried out by four shooters using Kalashnikov automatic weapons. More than 500 rounds were found at the scene.

The shooting began shortly before the Soviet-era rock group “Picnic” was set to play to a full house of 6,200 people. More than 200 people could have been in the blazing building moments before the roof collapsed, Baza reported on Saturday, citing emergency service sources who reviewed surveillance footage.

Russian social media channels have been flooded in the days since the shooting with appeals to help find victims.

Gathering in a Telegram chat called “Crocus. Help Centre,” friends and relatives shared names of missing concertgoers and offered support.

“Was there anyone on the list named Igor Valentinovich Klimenchenko?,” one user wrote on Saturday night. “Can someone send the list of victims?”

The name Klimenchenko was not on the list of confirmed dead published by Russia’s emergencies ministry.

‘VERY WORRIED’

Another person wrote in the same chat that their uncle worked not far from Crocus and hadn’t been in touch since the attack. “I’m very worried,” the nephew wrote on Saturday night.

Local media in the Bryansk region, southwestern Russia, reported on Wednesday that a woman was still searching for her son, Dmitry Bashlykov, a schoolteacher in Moscow who went to the “Picnic” concert with a friend who managed to escape.

Bashlykov’s name was not on the emergencies ministry list.

Several missing persons have since been confirmed dead, like 15-year-old Arseny, who went to the concert with his mother, Irina Vedeneyeva.

The SHOT Telegram channel on Sunday published a photo of Arseny that it said he sent his grandmother shortly before the concert began, along with appeals from the “grief-stricken pensioner” to help find him. His mother had already been confirmed dead, SHOT said.

In the photo, Arseny stands in a black hooded sweatshirt in front of a poster for Picnic, which SHOT said was his favourite band. On Monday, the channel wrote that Arseny’s body had been found and identified by his relatives.

The names of both mother and son are on the list of confirmed dead published by Russia’s emergencies ministry.

"Waste Of Energy": Economist Sanjeev Sanyal On Multiple UPSC Attempts

'Waste Of Energy': Economist Sanjeev Sanyal On Multiple UPSC Attempts

Sanjeev Sanyal is currently a member of the Economic Advisory Council of the Prime Minister.

New Delhi:

Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM) member Sanjeev Sanyal has said that 5-8 years of preparation for civil services examination by lakhs of students is a ‘waste of youthful energy’.

Mr Sanyal said one should only attempt UPSC or other such examinations if one wants to become an administrator.

“As mentioned, it (is) perfectly fine to attempt the UPSC or other such exams, but only if the person wants to be an administrator.

“The problem is that lakhs of people are spending 5-8 years repeatedly doing this exam as a ‘way of life’. This is such a waste of youthful energy,” he said in a series of posts on social media platform X.

Mr Sanyal further said it may come as a surprise, but his view is shared by most bureaucrats, who cleared the exam at some point.

“An attempt or two is fine for those who really want this path, but spending your entire 20s for it…is unhealthy,” he said.

The economist pointed out that an entire industry “indeed entire cities like Kota” is dedicated to taking an exam where less than 1 per cent of applicants will succeed.

“And this is (happening) every year. Imagine this huge effort being directed at other fields,” he said.

UPSC conducts the civil services examination every year in three stages – preliminary, mains and personality test (interview) – to select officers of Indian Administrative Service (IAS), the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and the Indian Police Service (IPS), among others.

Ex-Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren’s sister-in-law Sita Soren joins BJP

New Delhi: JMM legislator Sita Soren, the sister-in-law of former Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren, joined the BJP on Tuesday.

She quit the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) hours before joining the BJP, claiming that she was being neglected and isolated in the state’s ruling party.

Soren joined the BJP in the presence of its national general secretary Vinod Tawde and Jharkhand poll in-charge Laxmikant Bajpai at its headquarters here.

The three-term MLA’s decision to join the BJP is a shot in the arm for the party’s efforts to boost its connect with the Scheduled Tribes, a community which has been the main vote base of the JMM.

Iran lambastes 'terrorist Israeli army's war on Gaza hospitals'

The Foreign Ministry lambastes the Israeli regime’s numerous destructive attacks against healthcare facilities, including hospitals, across the Gaza Strip, which is enduring a genocidal war by Tel Aviv.

“The war on the Gaza Strip’s hospitals and treatment facilities serves a sorrowful and painful part of the [ongoing] trend of the terrorist Israeli army’s war crimes and genocidal operation against the sliver’s population,” spokesman Nasser Kan’ani wrote in a post on X on Wednesday.

Israel launched the war on Gaza on October 7 after Palestinian resistance groups carried out a surprise retaliatory operation into the occupied territories.

So far during the military onslaught, the regime has killed more than 32,500 Gazans, most of them women, children, and adolescents.

Throughout the campaign, the regime has also knocked as many as 33 hospitals across Gaza out of service.

Kan’ani noted that, only throughout the previous 24 hours, Israeli forces had set fire to the surgery ward at al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, and laid a siege and bombed al-Amal Hospital in the city of Khan Younis in southern Gaza, making it incapable of rendering medical services. The forces, he added, had also attacked the Nasser Hospital in the same city, arresting a number of the homeless and wounded people there and committing assault and battery against the facility’s medical staffers.

The spokesman cited Francesca Albanese, the United Nations special rapporteur on the human rights situation in the occupied West Bank and the Gaza Strip, as saying recently that the “colossal amount” of evidence of the Israeli regime’s crimes against Gaza over the past months could take the International Criminal Court “five decades” to process.

The spokesman finally asked whether, despite the sheer extent of the regime’s crimes, international institutions could do nothing beyond “adopting political stances, issuing statements or ratifying resolutions.”

“Do not the international circles and institutions have a practical responsibility towards creating a deterrence against and stopping this blatant and brazen genocide and prosecuting the [responsible] war criminals?”
