Who Is Amber Dalal, Consultant Who Duped Hundreds, Including Celebrities

Dalal was arrested from Uttarakhand after being on the run for 12 days.

Mumbai:

A Mumbai-based investment consultant who was on the run for 12 days after duping more than 600 investors of over Rs 380 crore has been arrested in Uttarakhand. Many celebrities were among his clients, including actors Annu Kapoor and Deepak Sharma.

The owner of Ritz Consultancy Services, Dalal worked out of the affluent Lokhandwala area in suburban Andheri and promised investors a return of between 1.6% and 2% per month by investing their money in commodities. Different investors had entrusted sums of between Rs 5 lakh on the lower end and several crores on the higher end to him.

Sources in the Mumbai Police said he had been running the business for 15 years and had delivered returns. NDTV spoke to some of his clients, including Mr Kapoor and Mr Sharma, who said Dalal had been giving them the returns consistently, including during the Covid period.

On March 14, however, Dalal went missing and his family members also said they did not know where he was. His investors, many of whom are senior citizens who had entrusted him with their life savings and depended on the interest from their investment to run their households, began panicking. A police complaint was filed by some investors.

Police sources said Dalal was tracked down to Dehradun in Uttarakhand, from where he was arrested on Tuesday night. “He was produced in custody and has been remanded in police custody,” said Sangramsingh Nishandar, Deputy Commissioner of Police from the Economic Offences Wing.

‘Kept Changing Hotels’

While he was on the run for 12 days, Dalal took several steps to remain undetected. Sources said he is suspected to have gone to other states before ending up in Uttarakhand and changed hotels several times in that short period so that he would not be traced.

The sources said since Dalal had operated in Lokhandwala – which is home to several people from the film industry – for a long time, he counted many celebrities among his clients. “Mr Kapoor and Mr Sharma are the only two well-known faces to have come forward so far, but there are many more,” said an official.

While investors are hoping to get at least their principal amount back after Dalal’s arrest, police are yet to establish what the money was actually used for. They are also trying to find out how he had managed to deliver the returns so far and the circumstances that prompted him to stop doing so and try and disappear.

'To Browbeat, Bully Others Is Vintage Congress Culture': PM Modi

PM Narendra Modi has taken a swipe at the Congress over a letter by lawyers

New Delhi:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a strong attack on the Congress party today after hundreds of lawyers and some bar association across the country wrote to the Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, expressing concerns over attempts to undermine the judiciary’s integrity using political and professional pressure.

“To browbeat and bully others is vintage Congress culture. Five decades ago, they itself had called for a ‘committed judiciary’ – they shamelessly want commitment from others for their selfish interests, but desist from any commitment towards the nation,” PM Modi said in a post on the microblogging website X.

“No wonder, 140 crore Indians are rejecting them,” PM Modi said.

PM Modi’s comments came after over 600 lawyers, including Harish Salve and Bar Council chairperson Manan Kumar Mishra, wrote to Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, alleging that a “vested interest group” is trying to put pressure on the judiciary and defame courts, especially in cases of corruption involving politicians.

Yesterday, the All Manipur Bar Association had also written to Chief Justice DY Chandrachud highlighting the need to speak out against “underhanded attacks” on the judiciary. The bar association in the letter had said it was extremely concerned about recent trends where vested interest groups were trying to defame the courts with “frivolous logic” and “stale political agendas”.

In the other letter by over 600 lawyers, they said the tactics used by the vested interest group “are damaging to our courts and threaten our democratic fabric.”

Chief Justice Chandrachud’s leadership is crucial in these “tough times” and the Supreme Court should stand strong, they said, adding it is not the time to maintain dignified silence.

The letter also targeted a section of lawyers without naming them and alleged they defend politicians by day and then try to influence judges through the media at night.

"Unwarranted, Unacceptable": India On US Remarks On Arvind Kejriwal Arrest

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal (File).

New Delhi:

Remarks by the United States on Arvind Kejriwal‘s arrest are “unwarranted” and a strong protest has been lodged, the Ministry of External Affairs said during a routine press briefing Thursday.

“… yesterday India lodged its strong objection and protest with a senior official from the United States Embassy with regard to comments made by the State Department. The recent remarks are unwarranted. In India, legal processes are driven by the rule of law. Anyone who has similar ethos… especially fellow democracies… should have no difficulty in appreciating this fact,” the MEA said.

The MEA also snapped back at the US’ comments on the Congress’ claim that its bank accounts have been frozen – over unfair tax demands – just days before the 2024 Lok Sabha election. The Congress has said the hold on its bank accounts means it has no money to spend on its poll campaigns.

The MEA underlined India’s “robust and independent democratic institutions” and said that “external imputation on our electoral and legal processes is completely unacceptable”.

The ministry spokesperson emphasised the Indian government’s commitment to protect the country’s judiciary and democratic institutions “from any form of undue external influences”.

“Mutual respect and understanding form the foundation of international relations and states are expected to be respectful of the sovereignty and internal affairs of others,” the MEA said.

“Interference…”: India On US, Germany Remarks

The External Affairs Ministry’s strong-worded statement comes after the US on Wednesday reiterated calls for “fair, transparent, and timely legal processes” involving Mr Kejriwal’s arrest.

The US said it “continues to follow these actions closely” when asked about the meeting Wednesday between MEA officials and Gloria Berbena, the US’ Acting Deputy Chief of Mission in Delhi.

On the Congress’ tax row, the State Department said it is “aware of the allegations…” and that it encourages the Indian government to deal with both issues in a “fair and transparent” manner.

This back-and-forth has led to a degree of diplomatic tension between the allies.

Also, the US wasn’t the only Western nation to face India’s strong objections for interfering in its internal matters. The German Foreign Ministry had called for a “fair and impartial trial” for Arvind Kejriwal, who is the Aam Aadmi Party leader and the first sitting Chief Minister to be arrested.

India reacted strongly to the comment too, summoning the German envoy and labelling the Foreign Office’s remark “blatant interference in internal matters”. “We see such remarks as interfering in our judicial process and undermining the independence of our judiciary,” the MEA said.

This morning a Foreign Office spokesperson appeared to backtrack, declaring “the Indian Constitution… guarantees fundamental human values and freedoms”.

Kejriwal Arrested In Liquor Policy Case

Arvind Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate last week in connection with the alleged liquor policy scam that has roiled his AAP and provoked furious protests from the opposition ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha election. Mr Kejriwal was this week sent to jail till March 28.

NDTV Explains | Why Enforcement Directorate Arrested Arvind Kejriwal

The Enforcement Directorate believes the now-scrapped liquor policy provided an impossibly high profit margin of 185 per cent for retailers and 12 per cent for wholesalers. Of the latter, six per cent – over Rs 600 crore – were bribes and the money was allegedly used to fund the AAP’s poll campaigns.

The ED has labelled the Chief Minister as a key conspirator in this case, but Mr Kejriwal and party colleagues arrested in this matter – ex-Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh, and former Health Minister Satyendar Jain – have all denied the charges.

The AAP and the opposition have hit out at the BJP-led central government for using central agencies, like the ED, to target rivals and critics before the general election. The AAP has criticised Mr Kejriwal’s arrest on grounds it was timed to interfere with his plans to campaign for the party.

The BJP has dismissed claims it uses central agencies as described by the opposition.

Mr Kejriwal this afternoon was sent to the custody of the ED till April 1

CM Revanth casts his vote in Mahabubnagar MLC bypoll

Hyderabad:  Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy cast his vote in the by-election to the Telangana Legislative Council at the Mahabubnagar local authorities’ constituency on Thursday.

As an ex-officio member in his capacity as the MLA from Kodangal, Revanth Reddy cast his vote in his home constituency.

Representatives of the local bodies exercised their franchise at 10 polling stations in the erstwhile Mahabubnagar district on Thursday.

The polling, which began at 8 a.m., concluded at 4 p.m. A total of 1,439 voters, including municipal councillors, MPTCs, ZPTCs, and ex-officio members were eligible to cast their votes.

The by-election is witnessing a direct fight between Manney Jeevan Reddy of the ruling Congress and N. Naveen Kumar Reddy of the main opposition Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS). An Independent candidate — Sudershan Goud — is also in the fray.

Fearing poaching of their elected representatives, the Congress and the BRS had shifted them to Karnataka, Kerala, and Goa. They returned on Wednesday.

The BRS enjoys an absolute majority in the local bodies as the party almost made a clean sweep in the elections held in 2019.

The BRS has a strength of 1,039 (71 per cent), Congress 241 (16.67 per cent), BJP 119 (8.23 per cent), and others 46 (3.18 per cent).

However, cross-voting is feared in the by-election, considered prestigious for both the Congress and the BRS ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.

The by-election was necessitated after Kasireddy Narayan Reddy of the BRS resigned and successfully contested as a Congress candidate from the Kalwakurthy Assembly constituency in the recent elections.

The Congress won 12 out of the 14 Assembly seats in the erstwhile Mahabubnagar district.

Russian intel chief discusses regional security with N Korea

“Substantive talks took place in Pyongyang with DPRK [Democratic People’s Republic of Korea] Minister of State Security Ri Chang-dae. The sides discussed essential international issues, regional security, and closer Russian-North Korean interaction amid external forces’ attempts to intensify pressure,” the SVR press office said in a statement.

According to TASS, the negotiations “took place in a warm and friendly atmosphere and demonstrated the unity of approaches to the issues discussed”.

The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported earlier on Thursday that a delegation from Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service led by SVR Chief Naryshkin had visited Pyongyang on March 25-27. As North Korea’s state-run news agency reported, the sides “informed each other about their opinions on the current international and regional situations around the Korean Peninsula and Russia and discussed widely and substantively the issues of further strengthening cooperation in the wake of intensifying spying and plotting moves by the hostile forces.”

Russia and North Korea intensified bilateral exchanges in the second half of 2023. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un visited Russia in September. He held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Vostochny Cosmodrome in Russia’s Far East on September 13. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov paid a visit to North Korea in October 2023.

'Iran-China trade tops $2.87 billion in January-February 2024'

The value of trade exchanges between Iran and China in January and February 2024 exceeded 2.87 billion dollars.

Trade exchanges between Iran and China in the first two months of 2024 saw a 37 percent increase in comparison with the similar period the previous year, a report says.

The value of trade between the two countries in January and February this year amounted to $2.879 billion, according to IRNA which cited the Chinese customs data.

The trade exchanges between the two countries were valued at $2.098 billion in the first two months of 2023.

It said China exported 2.05 billion dollars worth of goods to Iran in January and February this year, showing a 45 percent hike when compared to the previous year. Beijing exported 1.41 billion dollars worth of goods to Tehran in the first two months of 2023.

With a 20 percent increase, the value of China’s imports from Iran in the two months of 2024 reached 829 million dollars. Beijing imported 688 million dollars of commodities from Tehran in the same period the previous year.

Analysts believe that the value of China’s imports from Iran is much higher because the figures related to the purchase of Iranian oil by Chinese refineries are not included in the official statistics of the country’s imports from Iran.

According to the Chinese customs data, in the first two months of this year, the total value of China’s foreign trade reached 930 billion dollars with a growth of 5.5 percent compared to the same period last year.

During this period, China exported 528 billion dollars worth of goods while its imports amounted to 402 billion dollars.

"He Understands His Game More": Sangakkara Lavishes Praise On Riyan Parag

Ahead of his side’s Indian Premier League (IPL) match against Delhi Capitals (DC), Rajasthan Royals Director of Cricket Kumar Sangakkara said that all-rounder Riyan Parag will get an extended run at number four, pointing out how he is more mature and hungry following the rise of teammates Yashasvi Jaiswal and Dhruv Jurel to nationwide fame with Team India. Riyan started his IPL 2024 campaign with a 29-ball 43 (with a four and three sixes) against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in his side’s campaign opener.

The youngster was promoted to number four following years of batting down the order. This knock could kickstart Riyan’s breakout IPL season after being trolled for underperforming for years despite playing on largely unsuitable batting positions.

Last season, Parag scored 78 runs in seven innings. In IPL 2022, his numbers were 183 runs in 14 innings. In 2021, he made 93 runs in 10 innings. These numbers look heavily underwhelming when one also looks at his domestic cricket numbers for Assam, where he shows a more all-round side of him as a batter.

“It was a cricketing decision,” Royals’ director of cricket Kumar Sangakkara said of Parag’s promotion in the batting line-up, as quoted by ESPNCricinfo. The Sri Lankan legend acknowledged how difficult it was for Parag to bat down the order and not be able to showcase what he is truly capable of.

“We looked at how he has performed over the years. It is a very difficult thing for someone like Riyan, who has an overall game, just to always only get the toughest parts of the game where he has to come in and up the run rate at the death overs.”

“We all felt that he has a much more important role that he can play for us. And the hard work that he did leading up to the season, all the runs he scored at domestic cricket, all played a part in that decision,” he concluded.

Sangakkara said that Riyan will have to repay the faith and trust put in him and keep working on his game.

“He is good against pace and again so that important position of four was ideally suited for him.” he added.

During his 43-run knock against LSG, he had a 93-run stand with skipper Sanju Samson and started attacking only when he felt fully set at the crease. This approach was in line with his playing style for Assam, for who he has scored truckload of runs, especially in white-ball cricket.

In four matches of the Ranji Trophy 2023-24, Parag made 378 runs in six innings at an average of 75.6, with two centuries and a fifty. His best score was 155.

Parag also took Assam to the semifinals of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 competition, ending the tournament as the leading run-scorer with 510 runs at an average of 85, with seven half-centuries. He also took 11 wickets.

In the Deodhar Trophy, a 50-over tournament last year, Parag ended as leading run-getter while playing for East Zone, taking his team to the finals. In five matches and five innings, Parag made 354 runs at an average of 88.50, with a strike rate of over 136. He scored two centuries and a fifty. Most of his scores came in pressure situations and he found himself driving his team out of trouble after losing early wickets or going through a collapse. He earned the ‘Player of the Tournament’ title in the competition.

Sangakkara said that Riyan’s maturity stands out and he has changed a lot in terms of self-awareness, knowing what is good for him and his lifestyle etc.

“The biggest thing we have seen in Riyan is maturity. Irrespective of the support we offer players, self-awareness of your game, knowing what is good for you, how your lifestyle is both on and off the field – all of that has changed in Riyan,” said the director of cricket.

“He’s still a very, very young cricketer (aged just 22 years). We should not forget that. He is also been hugely in the focus over the years as one of the faces of the franchise, of the younger brigade. He has also seen the huge jumps that [Yashasvi] Jaiswal and [Dhruv] Jurel have made, and he’s got a hunger there now and an example to follow into the national team.”

“We know players have a variety of ambitions; – IPL is one of them. He understands his game more and taking on more responsibility has become non-negotiable for him,” concluded Sangakkara.
