Paddy procurement centres to be set up in Khammam

Khammam: As many as 151 paddy purchase centres were being set up across the district and they would start functioning from April 1, informed district Collector VP Gautham.

Reviewing the rabi paddy procurement here on Thursday the Collector said 1, 71, 357 metric tons of paddy was expected to reach the market.

28 procurement centres would be operated through IKP, 96 through PACS and 27 centres through DCMS.

Gunny bags, weighing machines, humidity checking machines and paddy cleaners should be handed over to the centres. Sector wise transport contractors have to be readied for grain transportation. Meetings with the millers and transport contractors have to be conducted.

Measures should be taken so that farmers do not face any difficulties at the centres, he said.

Earlier during a review meeting on the protection of government lands Gautham told land protection teams to take strict measures to protect and prevent encroachment of government lands.

The government lands have been identified and the list has been handed over to the land protection teams for action and an action taken report has to be submitted. Vacant lands, for which applications were made under GO 59 for regularisation and were rejected, have to be taken over immediately.

Fencing and CCTV cameras should be installed to protect such lands, Gautham suggested. He told the officials to carry out a survey and submit a comprehensive report on the assigned land allotted to ex-servicemen at YSR Colony.

Action should be taken against the beneficiaries who were not residing in the houses allotted to them at Tekulapally double bedroom housing complex.

Russia: US attempting to hide ‘something’ related to Moscow terrorist attack

The Kremlin says the United States is attempting to hide “something” related to the recent terrorist attack at a concert hall in the capital Moscow.

Four armed assailants broke into the Russian capital’s Crocus City Hall on Friday and went on a shooting spree at the people who were attending an event. The Daesh-K, an offshoot of the Daesh terrorist group, has claimed responsibility for the massacre that killed at least 143.

Russia, however, blames Ukraine and its Western allies over the carnage as the suspected gunmen, who were arrested early Saturday, were fleeing toward Ukraine, according to Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB). Kiev has strongly rejected the allegation.

“It’s strange, to say the least, that the Americans have dared to announce a single narrative. This suggests at the very least that they are trying to shift attention away from something,” said Kremlin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov on Wednesday.

He added that such claims came in before Moscow had formulated an official version of events, since Russian law enforcement is still working on the case.

While admitting that the assailants were Takfiri terrorists, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Monday that many questions remained unanswered, adding that such terrorist attacks fit the pattern of hostile actions against Russia by Ukraine’s foreign sponsors.

Earlier on Wednesday, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova also said that it was strange why Washington insisted only on the Daesh-K narrative, noting that the US is obviously biased and trying to “get Ukraine out of harm’s way.”

“In order to ward off suspicions from the collective West, they urgently needed to come up with something, so they resorted to ISIS (Daesh), pulled an ace out of their sleeve, and literally a few hours after the terrorist attack, the Anglo-Saxon media began disseminating precisely these versions,” Zakharova added.

She argued that if Kiev had been blameless in the massacre, Washington would have called for a full investigation, but now both the White House and the State Department simply say that “Ukraine has nothing to do with this.”

“Based on what data and what information? Only one thing is clear – they began to excuse the Kiev regime in order to excuse themselves. Because everyone understands perfectly well that there is simply no independent [Ukraine] without Western financial and military assistance,” Zakharova further said.

Putin has already suggested that Ukraine reaped benefit from the attack and that Kiev might have played a role, saying that the Ukrainian side had prepared a “window” for the gunmen to escape across the border.

"Flat Pitches…": Pak Star Mocks IPL As SRH vs MI Game Sets T20 Record

The SunRisers Hyderabad vs Mumbai Indians IPL 2024 game at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Wednesday was a proper run-fest. The surface was so conducive for batting that even bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah and Pat Cummins leaked runs. Both SRH and MI together scored a total of 523 runs in the match. A record 38 sixes were plundered in the game and it was the first time 500 runs were scored in a T20 match. While commenting on the game, out-of-favour Pakistan pacer Junaid Khan mocked IPL for the kind of surface offered and the size of boundaries.

“Flat pitches, small boundaries, quick outfield. This is called IPL. A target of 278,” wrote the player on X after SRH posted 277 for 3 — the highest total in IPL history — batting first.

Chasing the mammoth total, MI did threaten SRH with some superb batting but ended up being 31-run short.

“Credit goes to the wicket. 523 runs in just 40 overs with only 8 wickets fallen.

Is this actual cricket or is it stick cricket??” wrote Junaid in another post.

Records tumbled as Sunrisers Hyderabad went on a rampage to post the highest ever IPL total of 277 for 3 against Mumbai Indians before sealing a victory in a power-hitting contest that left bowlers on both sides befuddled.

SRH opener Travis Head (62 off 24) and number three Abhishek Sharma (63 off 23) came up with a sensational display of power-hitting that saw the latter snatching the franchise record for the fastest fifty from the Australian within minutes.

Heinrich Klaasen (80 not out off 34 balls) provided the fireworks in the end to help SRH break an 11-year-old record.

The previous highest total in IPL was 263 for five achieved by Royal Challengers Bangalore back in 2013. It was also the highest total recorded in a T20 league.

Mumbai bowlers were left shell-shocked by SRH’s six-hitting spree but their batters came out with a purpose and made a match out of what looked like a one way traffic at the innings break.

Eventually, they ended at 246 for five in 20 overs.

ED cases aimed to prevent opposition leaders from poll campaigning: BRS

Hyderabad: BRS leader Manne Krishank alleged that the BJP is misusing the central agencies like Enforcement Directorate (ED) to file false cases against the opposition parties and prevent them from campaigning in the ensuing Lok Sabha elections. He accused the BJP of attempting to divert attention from people’s issues as it could lead to their assured defeat.

Addressing a press conference at Telangana Bhavan on Thursday, Krishank said the ED filed different cases against Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, BRS MLC K Kavitha, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s daughter and several other leaders and their family members from various political parties. He said either opposition leaders or their family members are being arrested or being summoned for questioning in different cases, only to keep them away from poll campaigning.

“These arrests ahead of the Lok Sabha elections are clearly politically motivated. They are aimed to prevent the opposition leaders from campaigning and questioning Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his failures to address people’s issues. The BJP is resorting to these attention diversion tactics due to fear of defeat. If they are confident of winning 400 seats, why would they resort to such cheap politics,” he said. He pointed out that cases were either being withdrawn or shelved with regard to leaders who are joining the BJP, while others are being harassed for their fight against the BJP.

Ukrainian FM arrives in India to build on talks between PM Modi, Volodymyr Zelenskyy

New Delhi: Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba arrived in New Delhi on Thursday to reinvigorate bilateral ties with India.

He will build on the dialogue between Prime Narendra Modi and Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for peace.

In a first high-level visit by a Ukrainian leader since the start of hostilities with Russia in 2022, Kuleba began his two-day official visit at the invitation of External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.

“I began my visit to New Delhi upon @DrSJaishankar’s invitation. The Ukrainian-Indian cooperation is important and we will be reinvigorating ties,” Kuleba said in a post on X on Thursday.

“Building on the dialogue between @ZelenskyyUa and @NarendraModi, we will pay specific attention to the Peace Formula,” he added.

He would call on EAM Jaishankar and Deputy National Security Adviser Vikram Misri to discuss matters pertaining to the bilateral partnership and cooperation on regional and global issues of mutual interest, the Ministry of External Affairs said earlier.

Kuleba’s visit comes just as Prime Minister Modi spoke to Presidents of the warring Ukraine and Russia over the telephone this month.

In his talks with Zelensky, Prime Minister Modi highlighted that India supports all efforts for an early and peaceful resolution of all issues between Kiev and Moscow.

The Prime Minister added that India would continue to do everything within its means to support a peaceful solution as Zelensky appreciated the country’s continued humanitarian assistance for the people of Ukraine.

US Man Jailed For Trafficking Fake iPhones That Cost Apple $6 Million

US Man Sentenced To Jail For Trafficking Fake iPhones, iPads That Cost Apple $6 Million

Authorities seized two houses, $120,370 and more than 200 Apple devices from him.

A man in the United States, who led an international ring that trafficked counterfeit Apple products, has been sentenced to 51 months (four years and three months) in prison. According to a release by Office of the United States Attorney Southern District of California, San Diego-based Zhiwei “Allen” Liao defrauded Apple out of $6.1 million by swapping real iPhones and iPads from China with fake ones in the US and Canada. Authorities seized two houses, $120,370 and more than 200 Apple devices from the 34-year-old.

The official release further said that Zhiwei Liao, along with his brothers Zhimin Liao and Zhiting Liao, imported counterfeit iPhones and iPads from China “that looked genuine and included identification numbers (IMEI and serial numbers) matching identification numbers on real iPhones and iPads that were under warranty and had been previously sold to customers in the United States and Canada”.

“Zhiwei Liao then sent the fraudulently obtained, but genuine Apple products primarily to China where they were sold at a premium,” the release further said.

According to court documents, the fraud scheme involved more than 10,000 counterfeit iPhones and iPads.

“At the direction of the Liao brothers, co-conspirators traveled to hundreds of Apple Stores across the United States and Canada, and attempted to exchange counterfeit iPhones and iPads for genuine iPhones and iPads,” said the document.

The judge defended the “significant prison sentence” stating that Zhiwei Liao was the organizer and leader of an extensive international criminal organisation and trafficked counterfeit products for several years.

“Mr Liao’s sentencing closes a major chapter in a multi-year investigation that exposed an international, elaborate scheme to sell counterfeit goods worldwide,” said FBI San Diego Special Agent in Charge Stacey Moy. “This investigation would not have been successful without the unwavering dedication and persistence of our law enforcement partners. We remain diligent in the pursuit of justice to help maintain the integrity of our economy.”

According to San Diego Union Tribune, FBI agents first investigated Zhiwei Liao and his family in 2019.

Indian Sailor Injured After Ship Rammed US Bridge Received Stitches

Indian Sailor Injured After Ship Rammed US Bridge Received Stitches, Returned To Vessel

The impact brought most of the bridge tumbling into the mouth of the Patapsco River

New Delhi:

A sailor among the 20 Indian nationals whose cargo ship lost power and rammed a bridge in US’ Baltimore received stitches, before he returned to the damaged vessel, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said today.

“There were 20 Indian crew members. One was injured. He was treated, and given stitches. He has now returned to the ship,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal told reporters today.

New insights into the fatal disaster emerged a day after the massive Singapore-flagged container ship Dali sailing out of Baltimore Harbour bound for Sri Lanka reported losing power and the ability to manoeuvre, before ploughing into a support pylon of the bridge.

The impact brought most of the bridge tumbling into the mouth of the Patapsco River almost immediately, blocking shipping lanes and forcing the indefinite closure of the Port of Baltimore, one of the busiest on the US Eastern Seaboard.

Earlier on Wednesday, a team of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) boarded the idled freighter to begin interviewing the ship’s two pilots and 21 regular crew members who remained on the vessel.

The pilot was heard calling for tugboat assistance several minutes before the crash, the first indication of distress to harbour officials, followed by a radio report that the ship had lost all power and was approaching the bridge, NTSB officials said at a news briefing on Wednesday night.

Video footage that captured the accident show the ship’s lights winking off, then back on briefly before the vessel’s lights go out again.

Investigators said recorder data was “consistent with a power outage” but that an actual blackout had yet to be confirmed. The recorder also picked up commands to the crew to drop anchor, presumably aimed at slowing the vessel.

Of the ship’s 4,700 cargo containers, 56 hold hazardous materials, but there is no threat to the public. Two containers went overboard during the crash, but they did not contain hazardous materials. The ship was carrying more than 1.5 million gallons of fuel oil.
