Siddipet: The number of beneficiaries eligible for the crop loss compensation of Rs.10,000 per acre is going down in the erstwhile Medak district.

Following the untimely rains and hailstorms between March 17 and 21, crops were damaged to a huge extent. The State government on March 23 announced a compensation of Rs 10,000 per acre for farmers, asking officials to submit a report.

Interestingly, the Siddipet Horticulture department announced on March 19 that horticulture crops were damaged on 703 acres, including mango orchards on 414 acres. However, the same officials have prepared a revised report now, stating that crops were damaged in just 260 acres including mango orchards in 172 acres and vegetable crops in 88 acres.

The fresh report will deny compensation to dozens of horticulture farmers whose names were in the first list.

Speaking to Telangana Today, Deputy Director, Horticulture, Siddipet, Suvarna, said they had carried out a careful enumeration to find out the exact figures. This would be sent to the State government seeking compensation for these farmers, she said.

On the other hand, Agriculture officials in Siddipet district put the crop loss at 1,794 acres on March 19. Sources in the department say that the number of acres would considerably go down after another round of “careful examination”. The report would be ready by Friday, they said.

Medak district officials have put the crop loss at 2,766 acres while Sangareddy officials have put it at 714 acres. However, the number of beneficiaries could go down considerably since the same method of a second round of examination would be followed, officials hinted.

A vegetable farmer from Chandlapur village of Chinnakodur mandal in Siddipet, Adepu Dattu, demanded that the government pay compensation to all farmers whose crops were damaged. Dattu said he had invested Rs.3 lakh on vegetable crops which were completely damaged due to the hailstorms.

Ana Julia, World's Largest Snake, Found Dead in Amazon Rainforest

Ana Julia, World's Largest Snake, Found Dead in Amazon Rainforest Just Weeks After Discovery

The species was found during filming for the National Geographics Disney+ series

A giant anaconda, discovered just recently and believed to be one of the world’s largest, has been found dead. A snake researcher who helped with the initial discovery suggests a gunshot wound may be the cause.

The huge reptile, named Ana Julia, was found in the Formoso River in the rural area of Bonito in southern Brazil’s Mato Grosso do Sul State five weeks ago, reported the Independent.

The species was found during filming for the National Geographics Disney+ series ‘Pole to Pole’ with Will Smith.

Measuring 26 feet in length, the northern green anaconda tipped the scales at approximately 440 pounds, equivalent to 31 stone, boasting a head comparable in size to that of a human.

Amid speculation suggesting the snake may have been shot, a Dutch researcher involved in the discovery of Ana Julia emphasized that investigations into the cause of death were still ongoing.

Professor Freek Vonk shared the unfortunate news on Instagram. He wrote, “With enormous pain in my heart I want to let you know that the mighty big green anaconda I swam with was found dead in the river this weekend.”

“An iron-strong animal, a survivor, one that’s been swimming around Bonito for decades,” the professor added.

“As far as we know, she was super healthy and still in the prime of her life, and in the coming years she could have taken care of many descendants. Since there are not so many of this species of colossal giant snakes swimming around, the blow to biodiversity (and this particular species in particular) is also huge,” he added.

Professor Vonk had earlier said that the snake was shot dead but has now clarified that authorities have not yet found any evidence pointing towards this.

“The cause of death is currently still being investigated, considering all possible options. So it’s also possible that she died a natural death,” he said.

At the time of discovery, Professor Bryan Fry from The University of Queensland said: “The size of these magnificent creatures was incredible – one female anaconda we encountered measured an astounding 6.3 metres long

“There are anecdotal reports from the Waorani people of other anacondas in the area measuring more than 7.5 metres long and weighing around 500 kilograms.”

Chennamaneni seeks steps to strengthen CESS, Sircilla

In a letter addressed to the Minister, he called for steps to take up a thorough financial and organizational assessment of the cooperative while initiating appropriate reforms to revitalise the consumers cooperative that had operated successfully for over 52 years with best supply and service tradition in Sircilla district.

Hyderabad: Former MLA and advisor to State government, Chennamaneni Ramesh on Thursday urged Agriculture and Cooperation Minister Thummala Nageshwar Rao to initiate measures for strengthening the Cooperative Electric Supply Society (CESS) of Sircilla.

In a letter addressed to the Minister, he called for steps to take up a thorough financial and organizational assessment of the cooperative while initiating appropriate reforms to revitalise the consumers cooperative that had operated successfully for over 52 years with best supply and service tradition in Sircilla district.

The recommendations made by the ERC to the State government to windup CESS or merge it with IDPCL was very subjective and biased and it would be an inappropriate step, he said, adding that it would cost the cooperative spirit of its 2,97,708 members having 2,55,830 connections and a members’ share capital of Rs 6,14,81,587 in the society.

One of the most important issue pertaining to its financial viability could be addressed by adjusting the dues of the Government to the cooperative. The CESS could overcome many a crisis situations in the past with its strong cooperative commitment and the active participation of its members.

In fact, the CESS was a living example of people’s enterprises that can indeed be successful in the globalisation era, he said.

The commitment demonstrated by leaders such as Chennamaneni Rajeswara Rao, Juvvadi Narsinga Rao, Gotte Bhupathi and others helped in bringing this cooperative venture to Sircilla to achieve 100 per cent electrification in 1970’s and also its unique successful functioning thereafter. He exuded confidence that the government’s positive and proactive role will enable CESS to fulfill its responsibilities in the interest of the consumers.

Govinda Returns To Politics After 14-Year "Vanvaas", Joins Shiv Sena

Govinda Returns To Politics After 14-Year 'Vanvaas', Joins Shiv Sena

Bollywood actor Govinda returns to politics, joins Shiv Sena ahead of 2024 Lok Sabha polls

Mumbai:

Bollywood actor Govinda, a mass entertainer of the 1990s who is known for his excellent comic timing and epic dance steps, on Thursday joined the ruling Shiv Sena in Mumbai, making a comeback in politics after a 14-year hiatus.

The former Congress Lok Sabha MP joined the Shiv Sena in the presence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde at the time of election season.

Govinda, who gave multiple superhit films in his decades-long career, made a blockbuster entry in electoral politics in 2004. That year, the “Hero No. 1” actor emerged as a “giant killer” when, as the Congress candidate, he defeated BJP stalwart Ram Naik in the Mumbai North Lok Sabha seat.

Eknath Shinde welcomed the 60-year-old actor into his party, saying he was a popular figure in all sections of society.

Speaking on the occasion, an emotional Govinda, who started his acting career in the 1980s and whose films were family entertainers, said after his first stint in politics from 2004 to 2009, he never felt he would again come back to the same field.

“I am back (in politics) after a 14-year-long ‘vanvas’ (exile),” he remarked.

The veteran actor, whose full name is Govinda Ahuja, said he would work in the art and culture field if given a chance.

Mumbai looks more beautiful and developed since Shinde has become CM, he remarked after his re-entry into politics, albeit under the banner of a different political party, which comes at a time when the country is in the midst of Lok Sabha polls.

The actor said development of the country under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi was unbelievable.

Eknath Shinde, who took over as CM in June 2022, said there is positivity and prosperity in Mumbai and pollution levels are also coming down in the metropolis.

The Chief Minister maintained the versatile actor has joined his party without any pre-conditions and rejected suggestions that the entry was linked to elections.

“Govinda stands for progress. He is impressed with Modiji’s development policies. He wants to do something for the welfare and progress of the film industry. I am sure he will be the link between the government and the film industry. He has joined us without any conditions,” Eknath Shinde asserted.

“Govinda has ended his vanvas and come to Ram rajya,” noted the Shiv Sena leader, whose party is an ally of the BJP.

“My government is pro-development and pro-people, and he was impressed (with its policies),” the Chief Minister said.

Asked whether the actor will be fielded from the Mumbai North-West Lok Sabha seat, Eknath Shinde clarified he hadn’t put any conditions.

“He just wants to work for the film industry,” he said, adding Govinda hasn’t joined the party for an election ticket.

Eknath Shinde said the Shiv Sena, which heads the governing ‘Mahayuti’ coalition in the state, will soon release its list of Lok Sabha candidates.

“The Mahayuti is contesting all 48 seats (in Maharashtra). Ours is not a government which runs from home. We are field people and work for the welfare of people,” the CM maintained.

The ruling coalition consists of the Shiv Sena, the BJP and the NCP led by Ajit Pawar.

To a question on NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) leader Jayant Patil calling Govinda a “flop actor”, Shinde emphasised that insulting a film artist amounts to showing disrespect to the entire entertainment industry.

Asked about Shiv Sena leader Vijay Shivtare contesting from the Baramati Lok Sabha seat, the home turf of deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar in Pune district, Eknath Shinde said his colleague has clarified that the party’s decision on the matter was final for him and added “I am thankful to him”.

TT Impact: Works on Vempalli RoB expedited

Kumram Bheem Asifabad: Officials of Indian Railways expedited work on a road over bridge across a railway crossing at Vempalli village in Kaghaznagar mandal. A report was published in these columns narrating the difficulty faced by motorists by the inordinate delay in execution of the work on March 14.

Officials of the Railways responded to the report by taking steps to speed up the work on the structure. The erection of the 40-meter long slab and girders began a few days back. Special cranes were being used to install the girders over the line, connecting the two ends of the bridge. Officials said that the facility would be thrown open to the public soon.

Meanwhile, Sirpur (T) MLA Dr P Harish Babu inspected the works of the bridge on Thursday. He instructed the officials to take steps to expedite the works by speaking to officials in South Central Railway. The renovation of a road from Sirpur (T) mandal centre to Kaghaznagar would be speeded up, he said.

To ease traffic snarls at the crossing, a RoB stretching over a kilometre was sanctioned at an estimated cost of Rs.30 crore in 2016. Structures on either side of the railway line that fall in jurisdiction of the Roads and Buildings department were complete, spending Rs.19.77 crore so far. The work on the bridge was being executed at a sluggish pace due to reasons unknown.

Iran urges action after UN expert confirms Israeli 'genocide' in Gaza

UN special rapporteur Francesca Albanese deliveres her “Anatomy of a Genocide” report to the Human Rights Council in Geneva on Tuesday, March 26, 2024.

Iran says governments and international bodies face the judgement of history to deliver on their human responsibilities after a UN expert admits that Israel’s onslaught on Gaza amounts to genocide.

“The Zionist regime’s crime of genocide against the Palestinians has now been confirmed and clearly stipulated by the UN special rapporteur,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kan’ani wrote on X Thursday.h

In a report titled “The Anatomy of a Genocide” to the Human Rights Council in Geneva Tuesday, UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in the Occupied Territories Francesca Albanese called on countries to immediately impose sanctions and an arms embargo on Israel.

“National governments and international political and legal associations and institutions now face the judgment of not only world public opinion but also history. Will they fulfill their human, legal and historical responsibility?” Kan’ani said.

The 1948 Genocide Convention defines genocide as “acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group”.

Citing more than 30,000 Palestinians killed by Israel among other acts, Albanese said, “I find that there are reasonable grounds to believe that the threshold indicating the commission of the crime of genocide against Palestinians as a group in Gaza has been met.”

“I implore member states to abide by their obligations, which start with imposing an arms embargo and sanctions on Israel and so ensure that the future does not continue to repeat itself,” she said, prompting a burst of applause.

Albanese, an Italian lawyer, is one of dozens of independent human rights experts mandated by the United Nations to report and advise on specific themes and crises.

As she addressed the UN’s top human rights body, the seats for the United States were left empty. Washington has previously accused the council of a chronic anti-Israel bias.

"Few Can Score As Much As Me, But…": Sachin Pilot On Not Contesting Polls

'Few Can Score As Much As Me, But...': Sachin Pilot On Not Contesting Lok Sabha Polls

Mr Pilot also spoke about the suspense over the Amethi and Rae Bareli seats.

New Delhi:

Congress leader Sachin Pilot has said the decision not to contest the Lok Sabha elections is a calculated one and, using a cricket analogy, claimed few people can score as many runs for his party as him when he enters the electoral playground.

Answering a question at the NDTV Yuva conclave on Thursday on why he was not stepping into the electoral playground when young leaders like him could effect change, Mr Pilot said the party has taken a call after taking several factors into account and his responsibility, as the Chhattisgarh in-charge, is also an important one.

“When I step into the ground and bat, I don’t think other people can score as many runs as I do for the Congress. But people have to keep in mind what responsibility they are given when they enter the ground. As a Congress general secretary, I have been given charge of Chhattisgarh. Who contests an election, who is involved in strategy, who works for the organisation, all of these are decided differently at different times,” Mr Pilot said in Hindi.

“In 2004, I was an MP. Then I was an MLA. I was also a Union minister and a state Congress chief. So, I am carrying out the responsibilities that have been entrusted to me. The candidates that have been picked for the Lok Sabha election have been decided after a lot of thought and they are people that can win,” he added.

The senior leader said even people who are not fighting the polls have important roles to play and have to deliver, just like he has to in Chhattisgarh.

Claiming that the Congress will win the elections, Mr Pilot said some parties are talking about things like getting more than 400 seats and that politics today is reeking of arrogance.

“There is a difference between advertisements and what is actually happening on the ground. The gulf between the rich and the poor and between cities and villages is widening. Economic policies are responsible for this,” he said.

Asked about the suspense over the Congress strongholds of Amethi and Rae Bareli and whether Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi will be contesting from there, the leader did not give a clear answer and said Mr Gandhi has been named as a candidate from the Wayanad seat in Kerala. He said the two Uttar Pradesh seats have been Congress bastions and the party will win there again.

‘2004 Repeat’

Mr Pilot also claimed that the NDA of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s time had been finished and the BJP began reviving it after the Congress and other parties formed the INDIA alliance.

“In 2019, 65% of the votes went to parties in the INDIA alliance. So, only 35% of people supported the BJP… If the BJP is so confident, why is it inducting people from the opposition? This will be an interesting election and there will be a repeat of the 2004 polls when the opposition won despite people expecting an NDA victory,” he claimed.
