Inefficient, incompetent Govt has driven 200 farmers to suicide, says KCR

Suryapet: Mincing no words in holding the Congress government responsible for the plight of farmers in the State, Leader of Opposition and BRS president K Chandrashekhar Rao on Sunday said the callous approach of the government, coupled with its inefficiency and incompetency, had left farmers grappling with withered crops due to water shortage in some districts and damaged crops due to unseasonal rains in other areas.

Demanding a compensation of Rs.25,000 per acre to the farmers, Chandrashekhar Rao, who visited and interacted with farmers in Jangaon, Suryapet and Nalgonda districts on Sunday, said 200 farmers had lost their lives in just about 100 days of the Congress in power. While many died by suicide, several others were electrocuted due to erratic power supply.

“When the BRS was in power, not a single acre dried up. But this season, crops in 15 lakh acres have withered in the State. Never in my dreams did I expect such conditions to resurface in Telangana,” he said at a press conference at Suryapet.

“We have 39 MLAs as the main opposition party in the State. We were not routed in the State,” he said, stating that the ruling party luring one or two MLAs was a cheap political stunt. The BRS government in the last term had laid a solid foundation for adequate power and water facilities in the State and schemes such as Mission Bhagiratha had received accolades from even the United Nations. Still, the State which stood number one in paddy production in the country had descended into such a situation within a short span of time, he said.

Reports of farmer suicides, the sound of borewell digging machines in fields, flourishing water tanker businesses and sights of women carrying pots for drinking water had all become history in Telangana, but barely within three months of the Congress coming to power, all these were back, he said, pointing out that even when the Chief Secretary asserted that sufficient water was available in reservoirs, people were facing drinking water shortage and having to depend on water tankers even in the capital city of Hyderabad.

Pointing out that the BRS government had extended 24 hour power supply to commercial, agriculture and domestic sectors, even developing Hyderabad into a ‘power island’ city, he said the situation had seen a complete turnaround in such a short time only because of the inefficiency, incompetency and ineptitude of the Congress government. There were days when power cuts became news in Telangana, but now, proper supply of power was becoming news, he said, pointing at the power supply disruption just as he began the press conference.

Appealing to farmers not to lose hope or to resort to extreme steps, Chandrashekhar Rao said the BRS would fight against the State Government on behalf of farmers for compensation, water and power.

“We will wage a war and chase them. We will not allow this government to have sound sleep,” he said.

Recalling that in the past, water levels in SRSP and Nizam Sagar had come down and water was pumped from Singur and supply was ensured to the ayacut, he said 17 tmc was available in Singur, but still water was not being released.

“This government is not bothered about farmers. Where are you sleeping Mr. Chief Minister?” he asked, also slamming the government for its inaction on the sinking of the Medigadda pillars. About 6000 to 7000 cusecs of water was draining down to the Bay of Bengal due to the inefficiency of the government, which was busy playing blame games and with tactics to deflect attention.

The Nagarjuna Sagar and Kadem projects had suffered damages. Even the Hoover dam in the United States had suffered damages four times. Did the US Government left the project to fall into ruins, he asked.

“Congress came to power with just a 1.8 percent higher vote share. The Chief Minister flies to New Delhi. Cabinet Ministers do not inspect damaged crops. Politics is top priority to them, not people’s issues,” he said, stating that enough time was given to the Congress government, which was but trying to evade promises made to the people.

Demanding that the State government pay the Rs.500 per quintal for paddy as promised in the Congress manifesto, he said more procurement centres should be set up than the 7600 centres that were set up by the previous BRS government.

Chandrashekhar Rao later directed BRS district leaders to submit a memorandum demanding the Rs.500 bonus to farmers to district collectors on April 2. Deekshas were also to be staged in all constituencies on April 6.

Telangana: Rabi procurement to commence on Monday

Hyderabad: Procurement of the Yasangi paddy will commence all over the State on Monday. Commissioner of Civil Supplies D S Chouhan, who had a review of the paddy arrivals in the markets, directed the district collectors to open up purchase centres as per need and convenience.

At a few places, the procurement process commenced as early as March 25, according to officials. Stage has been set to open 7100 paddy purchase centres in all the districts. But for the moisture issues, it is expected to be a hassle free procurement process.

Additional purchase centres would be opened by assessing the situation where ever the need is felt, and “we will ensure a fair deal to the farmers,” corporation officials said.

The department had planned to schedule the procurement process from April 15. In view of the early harvest in the districts like Nalgonda, Nizamabad, and Khammam, the process was commenced in earnest.

Traders tried to cash in on the situation initially, but government agencies could intervene on time, said the officials.

The Rabi procurement was in the order of 92.34 lakh metric tonnes in 2020–21, 50.39 lakh metric tonnes in 2021-22 and 66–84 lakh metric tonnes in 2022–23.

The Agricultural Market Intelligence Centre, Prof Jayashankar Telangana State Agriculture University, as part of its price forecast exercise for rice, has predicted that the paddy price per quintal will be around Rs 2140- Rs 2280 for common varieties and Rs 2250–2640 for Grade-A varieties at the time of harvesting during March-May, 2024.

In the Miryalaguda area, the traders have reportedly been offering up to Rs 2600 for grade A. As part of its price support policy, the government has extended a minimum support price of Rs 2,183 per quintal for common varieties and Rs 2,203 for Grade-A.

Raeisi: Muslim states must cut all ties with Israel, force it to end crimes

Iranian President Ebrahim Raeisi says Muslim countries should sever all political and economic relations with Israel to force the regime to stop its crimes against the people of Palestine.

In a telephone conversation with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday, Raeisi said the US administration continues to provide Israel with extensive unqualified financial and military support.

“One of the most effective ways to force the Zionists to stop crimes in Gaza is to cut off all political and economic relations with this regime.”

The president said people in the besieged Gaza Strip are suffering terribly from Israel’s crimes, notwithstanding a recent adoption of a United Nations Security Council resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire.

Israel is not committed to any resolution, law and international treaty and its violation of over 400 international statements and resolutions clearly exposes its aggressive and anti-human nature, Raeisi stated.

The Iranian president called on heads of Muslim states to take a decisive measure to stop Israel’s genocide in Palestine.

He underscored the importance of boosting synergy among the member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and other regional and international bodies to send humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza.

Israel began its brutal US-backed campaign of death and destruction in the Gaza Strip on October 7 after the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas carried out a historic operation against the usurping entity in retaliation for the regime’s intensified atrocities against the Palestinian people.

Surprise package Brest beat Lorient 1-0 in a Brittany derby on Sunday to reclaim second place in Ligue 1 and remain on course for Champions League qualification. Former Lyon and Rennes winger Romain Del Castillo scored the only goal of the game for the visitors four minutes from time, placing a low shot into the far corner of the net. Brest then held on for the victory despite having Billal Brahimi sent off in stoppage time, as they got back to winning ways after taking just one point from their last two outings. The result lifts them back up into second place above Monaco, who won 5-2 at Metz on Saturday.

Brest, who have never qualified for Europe, are four points better off than fourth-placed Lille, who beat Lens 2-1 on Friday.

The top three in Ligue 1 will qualify automatically for next season’s expanded Champions League, with fourth place entering in the preliminary rounds.

Brest’s win also allowed them to close the gap on leaders Paris Saint-Germain to nine points before the reigning champions play at bitter rivals Marseille later on Sunday.

Bengaluru Man Slams Urban Company For 'Dark Subscription' Tactics

Bengaluru Man Criticises Urban Company For 'Dark Subscription' Tactics, App Designer Responds

The controversy centers around Urban Company’s checkout process.

A Bengaluru designer, Chandra Ramanujan’s recent post on X is going viral on the internet. In his post, he accused Urban Company’s app of using “dark patterns” – design tricks that can mislead users.

His 60-year-old father unintentionally subscribed to the company’s premium plan due to the app’s interface. This incident has sparked a debate about the app’s design choices, and even the app’s designer has weighed in!

Mr Ramanujan in a post on X wrote, “My dad (late 60s, not tech savvy) got confused by one of the worst dark patterns I’ve ever seen inside the Urban Company app, and ended up paying for UC plus even though he didn’t mean to. They automatically add a 6 month membership to your cart and make it confusing to remove.”

The controversy centers around Urban Company’s checkout process. Here’s how it works: Once you book a service, it goes into your cart. The cart also promotes their “Plus” subscription and automatically adds a 6-month plan to your total!

The option to remove the subscription is phrased in a way that might be confusing. It uses a red button that says “No, I will pay full price.”  This red colour, typically associated with warnings, might make users think it’s a bad option, leading them to skip it altogether.

Essentially, the design choices could trick users into accidentally subscribing. Especially for people in a hurry, the fine print might be easily overlooked.

In a subsequent post, Mr Ramanujan attached a screen recording showing the process. He criticised it as “basket sneaking,” emphasising that it is illegal. “I couldn’t believe it so I tried to replicate it. I downloaded the app, and the same splash screen came for me. At the 25 second mark, see how the basket value changes automatically when you click on the add to cart CTA. This is basket sneaking and it is illegal,” he wrote.

Soon after his post went viral, others in the comments section criticised Urban Company for deceiving customers with their poor design. A user pointed out, “Reported this a year ago, nothing happened. As a designer, one of the first responsibilities you have is to be honest in design. They should avoid using such trickery.”

Another user commented, “The option of not paying for plus is in red so it feels like the wrong option to pick. Not sure if it was meant to be a dark pattern but there could have been a clearer distinction here for sure.”

“For real! @urbancompany_UC thinks it’s a smart move and maybe they earn a few bucks with this tactic but it’s really about cheating. Cheating since not all the consumers are tech savvy, some are also in a hurry and don’t really give a glance.,” the third user commented.

The viral post also caught the attention of Urban Company’s Director of Design, Amit Jaglan who said he will fix it. “As a principle, we always strive to do right by our users and our partners. We will fix this by next week, Tuesday.” He assured that post-fix, no plan would be auto-selected, the CTA wouldn’t be in red, and would instead read, “Maybe later.”

Landslides Triggered By Rains Block Jammu-Srinagar National Highway

Landslides Triggered By Rains Block Jammu-Srinagar National Highway

Stranded vehicles will be cleared once restoration work is completed, say officials (Representational)

Banihal/Jammu,:

Vehicular movement was suspended on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway on Sunday following landslides, triggered by overnight rains, at a few places in Ramban district, officials said.

A traffic department official said road clearance work at Kishtwari Pather and Mehar-Cafeteria Morh has been going on since morning to ensure early restoration of traffic on the 270-km-long highway, the only all-weather road linking Kashmir with the rest of the country.

A massive landslide hit Kishtwari Pather near Nachalana in the Banihal area around midnight, while a mudslide and shooting stones from a hillock blocked the road at Mehar-Cafeteria Morh near Ramban town, the officials said.

The traffic department official said that following the landslides, the Srinagar-bound vehicles were stopped at Nagrota in Jammu and at Jakhani in Udhampur this morning. Vehicles heading towards Jammu were not allowed to go beyond Qazigund in south Kashmir.

A truck was damaged after being hit by a rock that rolled down a hillock at Panthiyal in Ramban late on Saturday evening. The truck driver and his helper escaped unhurt, the officials said.

The road is still blocked and people are advised to avoid travelling between the two capital cities till the road is cleared, they said.

The stranded vehicles will be cleared on priority once the restoration work on the route is complete, they added.

The traffic department has said that no heavy motor vehicles (HMVs) will be allowed on the highway from 4 am on Monday to 7 am on Tuesday in view of urgent repairs and upgradation of the airstrip stretch near Bijbehara in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

“Light motor vehicles (LMV) shall be diverted to the old national highway alignment between Alistop and Doonipora, including Wanpoh, Khanabal, Batengoo, Padshahi Bagh and Bijbihara. Truck drivers are advised to avoid their journey on the highway from 4 am on April 1 (Monday) to 7 am on April 2 (Tuesday),” the department said.
