"At Least Try For A Six": Ex-India Star 'Irked' By Hardik's Batting vs SRH

The IPL 2024 match between Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad on Wednesday turned to be a proper run fest with a combined 523 runs scored between the two sides. Sunrisers Hyderabad were in devastating form as they posted a total of 277/3 and in reply, Mumbai Indians played good cricket but ended up falling short by 31 runs. While there were several good batting performances in the match, former India star Manoj Tiwary was disappointed with MI skipper Hardik Pandya‘s performance. In his analysis, Tiwari said that he expected a ‘big-hitting player’ like Hardik to look for more big shots and in a match where the target was so high, his strike rate of 120 did not do his side any favours.

“If you look at the strike rate of MI batters… Hardik Pandya is a big-hitting player, but he struck at only 120. Yes, the bowling was good at that time, but one thing that irked me was the shots he hit against back-of-length. He was hitting the shots down the ground,” Tiwary told Cricbuzz.

“Generally, when the asking rate is 14-15, and you have such a big player, you’d want them to at least try for a six. Attempting to get a single or two, or even a four, wasn’t the demand of the situation. That irked me. And that shows he is not in good form. In the last match, he did start well but was dismissed. We have seen that he has rescued the team on many occasions,” he added.

Meanwhile, while speaking at the post-match presentation, Pandya said that the wicket was ‘good’ at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.

He accepted that they have a ‘young bowling attack’ and they will learn from the 31-run loss against the Hyderabad-based franchise. The MI skipper showered praise on the Proteas pacer Kwena Maphaka and said that he was ‘fantastic’ in the game.

“Not really (thought SRH would score 277 at the toss). Wicket was good, 277 no matter how bad or good you bowl, if the opposition has to score that much, they have batted well. They (the bowlers) were good, it was tough out there, almost 500 runs were scored and the wicket was helping the batters, we could have done a few things here and there, but having said that, we have a young bowling attack and we will learn. If the ball goes this many times into the crowd, you will need time to get the overs done. Everyone (the batters) looked good and it is just a matter of time before we put things right. He (Kwena Maphaka) was fantastic, coming into his first game and getting overwhelmed, he was alright and backed his skillset, just needs some game time,” Pandya said.

China's Xiaomi Enters Car Market With New Electric Vehicle

China's Xiaomi Enters Car Market With New Electric Vehicle

A basic SU7 model will cost 215,900 yuan ($29,868), Xiomi CEO said

Beijing, China:

Chinese consumer tech giant Xiaomi launched its first electric vehicle in Beijing on Thursday, injecting itself into a fiercely competitive sector in the world’s largest car market.

China’s EV sector has grown rapidly in recent years — propelled by purchasing subsidies that were discontinued in late 2022 — and dozens of domestic automakers are engaged in a stiff price war to get ahead in a crowded market.

Xiaomi is known for its affordable smartphones and home appliances, and CEO Lei Jun says he is now putting his “reputation on the line” with the SU7 EV, challenging Chinese car giant BYD and Elon Musk’s Tesla.

A basic SU7 model will cost 215,900 yuan ($29,868), Lei Jun told a glitzy launch news conference in Beijing on Thursday evening.

The sleek and sporty SU7 will be available in nine colours and includes “sound simulation”, Lei Jun said, “to recreate the thrill of driving a sports car”.

It also offers plenty of other gimmicks, such as karaoke equipment and a mini-fridge.

Xiaomi has promised it will be “the best-looking, best-driving and smartest car” priced under 500,000 yuan.

“The 200,000 to 250,000 yuan range, that actually is the most competitive segment in the China EV space at the moment,” Johnson Wan, an analyst at Jefferies Financial Group Inc, told Bloomberg.

Lei Jun told Thursday’s news conference that his company’s debut vehicle was comparable to Tesla’s Model 3 and surpassed the American maker’s sedan in some aspects.

“I think we can provide a better product for Model 3 users,” he said.

Xiaomi is the world’s third-biggest smartphone maker, and its experience in that sector has helped shape its EV strategy.

Lu Weibing, Xiaomi’s president, told CNBC last month that there were around 20 million people who used the company’s premium smartphones, a figure that helped it price the SU7.

“I think the initial purchasers will be very overlapped with the smartphone users. So that’s our strategy,” Lu said.

Cut-throat market

“By entering the premium segment, Xiaomi can carve out a niche against established brands like Tesla and Nio,” Abhishek Murali, senior electric vehicle analyst at Rystad Energy, told AFP.

“Targeting affluent Chinese consumers with a premium EV allows Xiaomi to potentially offset the high manufacturing costs typically faced by EV startups,” Murali said.

China is the world’s largest producer of greenhouse gases, but officials plan for most domestic car sales to be made up of electric and hybrid models by 2035.

The launch of the SU7 comes just days after BYD, the world’s top seller of EVs, posted record annual profits as it pushes a rapid expansion overseas into countries in Southeast Asia, as well as further afield in Latin America and Europe.

In a note attached to the earnings report, BYD CEO Wang Chuanfu acknowledged the year had not been all smooth sailing.

“At the beginning of the year, the recovery of automobile consumption was relatively lagging behind, affected by the switch in promotional policies and market price fluctuations,” he wrote.

XPeng — one of BYD’s top competitors in China — last week reported a net loss of 10.4 billion yuan in 2023.

Further highlighting the challenges of the sector, Evergrande NEV — a subsidiary of the debt-ridden real estate group — said on Wednesday that it had delivered only 1,389 vehicles since its launch.

When it started out in 2019, the firm gave itself “three to five years” to become the world’s “most powerful” EV manufacturer.

But it is now fighting for survival, weakened by the setbacks of its parent company and dismal sales.

Hyderabad: Water will be supplied round-the-clock by tankers from the first week of April, said MA&UD Principal Secretary M. Dana Kishore.

During a review of the summer action plan and water supply through tankers with the HMWSSB senior officials on Thursday, he pointed out that compared to last year, the demand for tankers has increased by 50 per cent this time.

Measures were being taken to meet the demand with 9,000 tanker trips every day. With the 24-hour operations, a special night shift has been arranged to supply water for commercial purposes.

Each filling station will take on an additional 300 trips for commercial users and 250 new tankers have been arranged for which drivers will be recruited shortly.

Moreover, a total of 20 new filling stations would also be operational by the first week of next month. Of them, six are within the GHMC limits, and the remaining are in the areas within the ORR.

Officials were further directed to supply water within 24 hours of booking the tanker or provide information through SMS in case of a delay. Ends

State Department official resigns over US support for Israel

A human rights official has resigned from the US State Department over the situation in Gaza, saying the administration of President Joe Biden is flouting the American law by continuing to arm Israel.

Annelle Sheline, a Middle East analyst who promoted human rights on behalf of the US government, announced her resignation in an interview with the Washington Post on Wednesday.

Sheline, 38, said her work was challenged by the complexities of the conflict in Gaza and its numerous moral, legal, security, and diplomatic consequences for the United States.

She explained her efforts to voice concerns through dissent cables and in staff meetings, but ultimately determined it was futile “as long as the US persists in supplying Israel with an uninterrupted flow of arms.”

“For the past year, I worked for the office devoted to promoting human rights in the Middle East. I believe strongly in the mission and in the important work of that office,” Sheline also said in an op-ed for CNN.

“However, as a representative of a government that is directly enabling what the International Court of Justice has said could plausibly be a genocide in Gaza, such work has become almost impossible.”

Sheline said the State Department has ample evidence of Israel violating international law in Gaza and that the Biden administration is therefore breaching its own domestic laws by continuing to fund Israel.

“My colleagues and I watched in horror as this administration delivered thousands of precision-guided munitions, bombs, small arms and other lethal aid to Israel.”

Sheline’s resignation followed another State Department official, Josh Paul, a director in the Bureau of Political-Military Affairs, who resigned in October 2023.

“So proud of my former colleague Dr. Annelle Sheline for being the third US official to publicly resign over the absolute disaster that is the Biden Administration’s continuing support for Israel’s war crimes, bombings, and starvation of innocent civilians in Gaza,” Paul said in a post in response to the news.

Separately, Tariq Habash, a Palestinian American, resigned from his political appointment in January at the US Department of Education.

State Department officials opposed to US support for Israel have penned dissent cables accusing Israel of committing “war crimes” and accusing Biden of “spreading misinformation” on the war.

Biden’s position on the war had also sparked a backlash among staffers to Democratic lawmakers in Congress.

In February, Aaron Bushnell, a 25-year-old US Air Force serviceman, self-immolated outside Israel’s embassy in Washington DC in protest against the Biden administration’s Gaza policy. He later died of his injuries.

New York University alumni refuse to donate to university over Palestine policy

in a separate development, hundreds of alumni from the prestigious New York University (NYU) in New York City withheld more than $3 million worth of potential contributions from the institution’s largest fundraising day on Wednesday.

NYU Alumni for Palestine, the group that mobilized to deter alumni from donating to the university, said that the stifling of pro-Palestinian voices and its refusal to condemn Israel’s killing of Palestinians in Gaza had compelled them to take action against their alma mater.

The group has documented retaliatory actions against an estimated 100 students as well as 25 staff and faculty over the past six months because of their comments or mobilising for Palestine.

The actions include protracted investigations, verbal and written warnings, threats to scholarships and financial awards, withdrawals of scholarships and financial awards, suspensions, expulsions, as well as termination of employment.

In January, two professors were suspended for their public comments on the Israeli campaign in Gaza.

For decades, American universities have been at the frontline of efforts to censor and stifle activism over Palestine.

Universities have also been incubators for smear tactics and intimidation targeting Palestinian voices in particular, as directed by the Israel lobby.

Several American universities continue to hold investments in weapons companies servicing Israel.

Axis Bank Credit Card Users Impacted By Fraudulent Transactions: Report

Axis Bank Credit Card Users Impacted By Fraudulent Transactions: Report

Several customers having Axis Bank credit cards have been impacted by fraudulent overseas transactions

Mumbai:

Several customers having Axis Bank credit cards have been impacted by fraudulent overseas transactions, a senior official from the third largest private sector lender said today.

Sanjeev Moghe, head of cards and payments at the city-based lender, said starting Tuesday evening, customers witnessed unauthorised transactions where they received transaction alerts on certain low-value purchases being carried out at some e-commerce sites.

There has been “no data breach” at the bank’s end, Mr Moghe said, asserting that the scale of such transactions is very limited and customers’ data is safe and secure.

Amid growing social media chatter about such unauthorised transactions going through, Mr Moghe said the bank’s internal mechanisms stopped some transactions but added that many customers have been impacted.

The bank witnessed spends of about Rs 500 crore per day by its credit card customers, Mr Moghe said, adding that when compared with it, the extent of such transactions has been “very small”.

Asked for more details, he said it is a small fraction of the overall spends and added that “we are speaking about thousands and lakhs”. He also hinted that such incidents happened for a day, and have stopped.

Fraudsters gained access to a few card numbers and matched it with the expiry dates to carry out the unauthorised transactions, he said, explaining that as these are international transactions, they can go through without any second factor authentication like a one time password over SMS or even the CVV number.

To a query on how the data can be sourced by the fraudsters, he said the first six digits in a 16-digit number are bank-specific, and added that the card numbers can be picked up when the card is given for payments at petrol pumps or restaurants.

Asked if other banks have also experienced similar instances as their customers’ credit card numbers can also get picked up in a similar way, Mr Moghe said he is not immediately aware about the same.

Axis Bank is replacing the credit cards for the impacted customers, and charging back the debited amount, Mr Moghe said, adding that this is not a hit for the lender.

The Reserve Bank has been informed about the incidents and the bank will have to look at strategies like audits to avoid such incidents in the future, he said.

The Axis Bank scrip closed 0.50 per cent down at Rs 1,048.30 a piece on the BSE on Thursday as against gains of 0.90 per cent on the benchmark.

Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf held a meeting with Ismail Haniyeh, the head of the political bureau of the resistance movement Hamas in Tehran on Thursday.

Ghalibaf received Haniyeh in Tehran’s Baharestan, the compound of the Iranian parliament.

“The resistance of the Resistance Front and the Palestinian people is outstanding, and the entire Islamic world has a duty to support the people of Gaza,” Ghaliba said in the meeting.

‘”The final winner of this battle is the side that has more resistance,” he also said, adding that not only the Resistance groups in Palestine have showen great resistance over the six-month period since the Gaza invasion by the Zionist regime was launched but also the ordinary people have accompanied them by showing great steadfastness in the face of hardships.

Haniyeh, for his part, expressed gratitude for Islamic Republic of Iran’s support to Palestinians and noted the Palestinians have shown great resistance over the past six months.

The senior Hamas official said that the Palestinians will continue to resist the occupation, noting that the enemy failed to achieve any of its goals in the Gaza battle.

According to Haniyeh, Gaza is at the forefront of resistance against the Zionist regime, therefore they seek to remove Gaza from the Axis of Resistance and bring it into “the Axis of Compromise.”

Haniyeh arrived in Tehran on Tuesday and was received by Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, the Iranian foreign minister.

The senior Hamas official and his accompanying delegation have also already been received by the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei on the visit.

Zionist regime unable to defeat resistance forces: Leader

Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, met and spoke with Mr. Ziyad al-Nakhalah, the Secretary General of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad Movement, and his accompanying delegation on Thursday.

The Leader of the Islamic Revolution called the resistance forces and the people of Gaza the victors of the Gaza battlefield so far, stressing that, “The apex of dignity and steadfastness of the people of Gaza and Palestine and the failures of the Zionist regime in this six-month war is a divine event and phenomenon.”

Referring to the crimes of the Zionist regime in the killing of the people of Gaza, Ayatollah Khamenei said, “The fact that the Zionist regime, with all its military equipment and the support of the world’s cruel powers, is killing women and children, shows that this regime is not capable of confronting the resistance forces and defeat them.”

Ayatollah Khamenei addressed the Secretary General of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad and pointed out, “By God’s grace, you will see the final victory of the people of Gaza.”
